Domestic Violence Vs IPV
The experiences of cancer patients tend to be touching since the scourge is a killer in the neo world.
On the other hand, the case of IPV; internal partner violence is not as severe as the experiences of
cancer patients. Concerning women victims, a closer scrutiny of the experiences of victims of cancer
and IPV reveals that both cases are similar as well as different than the first thought impression. The
following paper describes the similar occasions and also gives various diversities from the
experiences of victims of both scourges.
Similarity
Women who have a diagnosis of cancer tend to have similar experiences with those women having
domestic violence. In accordance with health care perspective, both cases require a proliferate

Analysis Of The Heat Of World War II
Vivian Lei
Professor Berland, Professor Warner
HSHM 202: Media and Medicine in Modern America
2 December 2013
Title
In 1943, in the heat of World War II, Captain Theodor Geisel, commonly known today as Dr. Seuss,
published This is Ann, a pamphlet warning of the perils of malaria's mistress, the Anopholes
mosquito. Disease, malaria in particular, proved to be the greatest cause of casualties in the army,
even greater than those inflicted through enemy combat. Though initially aimed toward the military
audience, This is Ann... She Drinks Blood! was later adapted in November 1943 by the U.S.
Department of War for national circulation to war involved organizations and groups across America
through Newsmaps , a publication featuring maps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cartoon succeeds in providing the direct association of Ann with malaria in a way that is
visually appealing accompanied with text that is direct and approachable to all audiences, especially
toward its intended young GI audience. On November 8th, 1943, the U.S. Department of War
published Ann on the back of each Newsmap to circulate the message that Ann was not only
spreading but was presented as a high threat to the safety of soldiers as well as the nation. The
Newsmaps provided a means to both educate young cadets as well as the general public of the
afflictions of WWII. This particular issue featured a map of the world showing areas of high risk for
contracting malaria. While the map was a typical feature of the Newsmap publications, as indicated
by its name, the November 8th issue was accompanied by an excerpt from Geisel's This is Ann...
She Drinks Blood! revealing a racy Ann smirking as she sips from a cocktail glass filled with blood.
Featuring Leaf and Geisel's original text, the Newsmap warned its readers that Ann was "dying to
meet you", but that the threat of Ann could be avoided because "you've got the ... stuff to lick her if
you will USE IT." However, the pamphlet is keen on alerting that should one "get sloppy and
careless about her... she'll bat you down just as surely as a bomb, a bullet or a shell." The U.S.
Department of War conveyed a loud and clear

The White Scourge, By Neil Foley
The White Scourge: Mexicans, Blacks, and Poor Whites in Texas Cotton Culture In The White
Scourge, Neil Foley gives detailed facts about the construction and reconstruction of whiteness and
the connection of this whiteness to power, mainly on cotton culture in central Texas. Foley 's book
analyzes "whiteness" through detailed analysis of race, class, and gender. What was most intriguing
about this book is its comparison of whiteness on various racial groups and classes, for and how
each struggled in comparison to the other in order to thrive and exist with one another. In this book,
Foley shows a racial system that continues to produce both poverty material wise and poverty of
where you stand racially. It is also very interesting that the system exploits not only Mexicans and
Blacks, but also the poor whites who competed with them for work. In "The Old South in the
Southwest," a history of race and power in the beginnings of the Republic of Texas is provided to
the reader, for example, "Indians and free blacks were denied the constitutional protections accorded
to whites, while Mexicans occupied a nebulous, intermediate status between (nonwhite) Indian and
(marginally white) Spanish" (Foley 19), showing that the white American's were having trouble
categorizing Mexicans race–wise. This was an important issue to resolve because in America, being
able to have ownership of land meant power and thus meaning race determined who could and could
not own property and establish

Growing Scourge
To begin with, the article, "Fighting The Growing Scourge" by Mina Bloom is reporting on the
growing number of complaints about rats in Chicago. The new method of choice that seems to be
cheaper and less harmful to other animals is using dry ice. Dry ice is less damaging and more
effective than poison. Within the article the reporter uses official sources from media reports and
USA today and spokespeople.
In addition, the article "Disturbing Uptick in Lincoln Park Demand or More officers" by Mina
Bloom expresses the concern for the crime rate in Lincoln Park. Due to the increase in crime rate
after a woman was robbed and suffered a head injury has brought the idea and concerns of wanting
more police men in Lincoln Park. She is getting her sources from the spokesperson and witnesses
from the incident. The voice missing within the article is the victim herself.
Furthermore, the article, "Geja's Café Just Got even More ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The sources she uses within the articles, are sources that are within the norm. She did not step out of
her social barrier to receive any of the sources. In the sources, they were missing "regular" citizens.
Since, she is reporting on a certain area it would be more personable to add "regular" citizens within
some of the articles.
In the article about the rats it talked about how construction and the mild winter caused reasons for
the rat surge. I would expand on this section of the article and go into more detail as to why. Also, I
would get in contact with a construction worker who has experienced rats and their views.
I would suggest Mina Bloom expanding on the article about the Geja's Café opening and becoming
more romantic. In the article is talked about how it has been open for 51 years and they are finally
opening an outdoor area. I would expand the story after it opens and talk about the news of it being
the most romantic date spot with the outdoor patio being

Acid Rain: Scourge From The Skies Essay
Acid Rain: Scourge from the Skies
"North Americans have been smelting ore and burning fossil fuels for generations. In the past, the
gases went up ordinary chimneys or small smoke stacks, to descend upon near by areas and pollute
them," states author, Robert Collins. Almost everyone knows what acid rain is and has a vague idea
of the consequences that exist as a cause of it. Most people however do not realize the severity of
acid rain. The essay "Acid Rain: Scourge from the Skies" by Robert Collins was very effective in
showing the true severity of acid rain. By using excellent developmental devices, Robert Collins

Secondly, essays written about important subjects like acid rain which effect society everyday have
consist of a great deal of personal appeal for readers. Essays that appeal to a large amount of readers
are effective because they are relevant to many different types of people. Acid rain doesn't effect
only one group of people and that is why the subject of acid rain is effective.
Farmers, livestock breeders or anyone else who is constantly working with the land would be
interested in this essay because acid rain is a very significant subject for them. If the effects of acid
rain worsen, their jobs and lives could change considerably. Furthermore, scientists and biologists
who are trying to find ways of preventing acid rain would find this essay appealing. The essay gives
many ideas as to the ways of preventing the emission of sulphur dioxide into the air. "Acid Rain:
Scourge from the Skies" deals with a subject that is relevant to scientists and might be able to help
them further their research. Correspondingly, people who are researching the topic of acid rain for
school, work or just for curiosity would find this essay appealing because it answers a lot of the
possible questions that they might have. For example, if someone wanted to know how acid rain

Describe The Roman Fasces And Explain What It Symbolized
1. Describe the Roman fasces, and explain what it symbolized
The Romans felt that it was their destiny to unify many peoples, scourge transgressors and pose
them. They wanted to rule the world. Greek and Etruria heavily influenced Rome. The insignia of
the Etruscans was one of the most critical contributions that got passed on to Rome. Fasces was the
insignia and it helped mold the Roman mentality. The Roman fasces was an ax surrounded by a
bundle of birch rods, tied together with a red leather strap. These had great symbolism of their
ruling, because the ax in the middle of the birch rods symbolized the state power and authority. They
had the power to scourge and execute any Roman citizen that was to disobey or commit any serious
crime. It served as a reminder to all, that a magistrate not only possessed the ... Show more content

Another symbolism was that of the birch rods– fragile alone, but together formed something strong.
This was the same as single Roman– weak alone, but bound together by the cords of blood,
invincible. The fasces represented the strength through unity. Therefore, the Roman government
made it the official insignia. Soldiers used fasces many times to show their power and authority.
When they were going to a public ceremony in front of the magistrate, they would always carry 24
fasces.
2. Explain fascism and tell how it brought the Roman Republic down
The family was a picture of the state– the father was the head and everyone else obeyed him.
Religion and government worked as one to please the gods and run things. They were united–
fascism. Fascism is the belief that there is no transcending god and all there is, is a material
universe. With a completely material worldview, hardly anyone is important. Power determines a
person's value and only those with physical, mental, or spiritual power would rule. An

Vriska's Death In Webcomic Homestuck
The death of an individual profoundly affects the lives of others. Whether it is literature or real life,
the dead leave behind family and friends who mourn them. Their death can have a great impact on
those left behind, and usually those left behind would do anything to have them back.
There are many examples of this within the webcomic Homestuck, however the one that sticks out
most is the death of Vriska Serket. Vriska is mostly seen as an antagonist throughout the story, and
continuously does bad things. Sometimes it is hard to blame her for them. She had to continuously
kill other trolls in order to feed her giant spider guardian. If she did not do this the spider would
either eat Vriska or starve to death leaving Vriska alone, which ... Show more content on

and continuously calls him a pathetic coward. Vriska brings Tavros back to life since she felt
obligated to, but immediately after treats him like dirt. Vriska even goes as far as finding the version
of herself from the other timeline and makes her cry. She is hypocritical and yells at other Vriska for

What Is The Theme Of Innocence In The Scarlet Letter
In Nathaniel Hawthorne's book "The Scarlet letter" the characterization of Hester Prynne, Arthur

plot going by her keeping secrets, Arthur Dimmesdale showed the theme of feeling guilty, and Pearl

The theme of feeling guilty can cause pain within is most related to Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale.
In the book Nathaniel Hawthorne is speaking about Arthur Dimmesdale as he keeps a whip in his

narrator says, "His inward trouble drove him to practices more in accordance with the old, corrupted

Summary Of Neil Foley's The White Scourge
Neil Foley, the author of The White Scourge: Mexicans, Blacks, and Poor Whites in Texas Cotton
Culture, was growing up in Alexandria, Virginia. A family of eight children whom father was a
Spanish–speaking, second generation Irishman and mother who was a pure Mexican. Foley
graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master of Arts Degree and attained a PH.D. in
American Culture in 1990. He lives with his wife and two children. In this book, Foley uses a vast
amount of archived histories as well as verbal materials to portray the construction and re–
construction of whiteness and the its connection of whiteness rising to power. Narrowing it down to
focus on a specific area, which is the cotton culture in central Texas, Foley breaks down whiteness
through a through analysis of race, class, gender. A fascinating aspect of this book is the differences
mentioned towards whiteness and the various ethno–racial classes and their tense relations to
develop a meaningful existence amongst one another. This book depicts the pathology of a racial
system that over and over again produces material hardship and lack of spirit. The psychology used,

People of color are also able to fine–tune themselves to become white through changes in their

Caste System, The Scourge of Indian Civilization Essay
Caste system has been the scourge of Indian civilization and culture. The battle against this
oppressive and inhuman is older than even some of the great religions of the world. The first warrior
to wage against this system was probably Gautam Buddha who waged the war against this inhuman
system in 6th century B.C. No doubt, Buddha was able to put some dents in the system, but after the
Nirvana of Buddha, the system once again rose like a phoenix and gained strength to crush
humanity. In fact, the system has proved to be the most agile and resilient against the liberal human
traditions. According to Porter:
Caste represents the most memorable, comprehensive and successful attempt ever made by an order

Their hopes of a respectable life dashed and the people of other religion also treated them as
inferiors. In this case, eminent social scientist M.V. Srinivas writes:
The conversion of so called low castes to Islam and Christianity in many parts of India, and to sects
such as Sikhism and Arya Samaj in Punjab and Western Uttar Pradesh, was often motivated by a
desire to shed the odium attached to being low. But the converts found that it was not at all easy to
shake off their caste and that, in fact, they carried it with them to new faith or sect. Indian Islam and
Christianity both bear the stamp of caste system; this is not to say, however, that the caste system
among Indian Christians and Muslims is same as the caste system among the Hindus. (Srinivas, 80)
In fact, conversion could not provide any respite, but added to the miseries because now they were
restricted by the rules of alien faith. The current paper is a study of Bama Faustina's Karukku. Bama
was born into a family of Christian converts. From her childhood she followed the rites and rituals
of Roman Catholic denomination. Bama's grandmother converted to Christianity to escape the
tyranny of caste system, but her writings testify that Christianity turned into shackles around their
feet. In Karukku, she deals mainly with casteism within Roman Catholic Church. In Karruku,

Essay about The Fokker Eindecker During World War One
In today's world, the use of airplanes in wars or in everyday life has become a part of how we live as
human beings. Removing the air forces of the world is like taking a step back in time when wars
were only fought on land or sea. WWI began only eleven short years after the Wright brothers
achieved powered flight in 19031 and yet aircrafts were being used for surveillance and eventually
combat purposes. It is understood that these aircrafts were primitive, but they laid down the
foundation for what we know today as fighter jets. The Fokker Eindecker "revolutionized air combat
by successfully employing a synchronized forward –firing machine gun mounted on the engine
cowling"2. Because this airplane became the first to successfully use a ... Show more content on

What was the importance to this plane? The French plane included a machine gun attached to its
propellers. Fokker went above and beyond the German's request by creating a more reliable aircraft
that wouldn't allow the propellers to be damaged by the gun.6 What made Fokker's E–series
revolutionary was the synchronized machine gun attached to the propellers. The gun attached to the
French plane had metal plates to protect it from the bullets but Fokker realized that they were not
one hundred percent protected. By devising a synchronizing machine gun with the propeller, there
would be no way for the aircraft to be damaged and all the pilot had to do was point the aircraft in
the direction he wanted to attact.4 The warfare of World War one was the deadliest to date due to
new fighting tactics and advancements in technology. Machine guns and trench warfare became the

`` Under Donald Trump, The Scourge Of Hiv / Aids Essay
On December 1st 2016, Steven W Thrasher published the strongly worded article entitled, "Under
Donald Trump, the scourge of HIV/Aids is going to get worse". After losing the the House/Senate
majority, the presidency, and possibly the Supreme Court majority on November 8th, it 's become a
trend for the left to muse about the looming Trump presidency coming in 2017. Still, I was shocked
when I read the headline. In what way could Trump affect the spread, transmission, or deadliness of
HIV? Especially since modern medicine has ruled HIV/AIDS no longer an automatic death
sentence. Of course, there is more to the presidency than the president himself. Trump will have his
cabinet, advisors, etc that in the end can have drastic effects on eventual policy. Is the author
spreading misinformation and fear mongering, or does he have some salient points about the effects
of a Donald Trump administration? Moreover, I 'll be analyzing how well the article resonates with
its specific audience, as well as a discussion of the argument's structure First and foremost, the
articles audience are those who dislike Donald Trump, or dislike the idea of a Donald Trump
presidency. The headline immediately implicates Trump as the person responsible for this possible
resurgence of HIV/AIDS. However, this doesn't say to much about the audience, as there are people
from each gender and either side of the political spectrum who disdain Donald Trump. Thrasher
gives a stronger indication of his audience

Ted Talk Analysis
In his February 2013 Ted talk "Txtng is killing language. JK!!!," the linguist John McWhorter
argues against the notion that texting leads to the downfall of literacy among the younger
generation. In fact, the speaker claims that texting causes the development of the "linguistic
repertoire" and the formation of a new language. In order to do so, McWhorter acknowledges the
status quo of the perception of texting among the older generation; texting is the "scourge" that leads
to the "decline of the writing ability" of the younger generation. In response to the status quo,
according to McWhorter, texting creates an "emergent complexity" of the development of literature
or at least writing. At the beginning of the Ted talk, McWhorter presents a clear difference between
speech and writing. However, according to McWhorter, certain aspects cross from one realm to the
other over time. As a result, people can write like they speak and people can speak like they write to
an extent until the emergence of texting. Despite the assertion, according to McWhorter, "texting is

However, according to McWhorter, texting is an "emergent complexity" with new structure. Unlike
the writing of prior generations, texting embodies a new form of writing that ignores the structure
and standardization of formal writing. McWhorter furthers this claim by using examples of common
pragmatic particles in texting such as "LOL" and "slash." According to McWhorter, the first
pragmatic particle "LOL" acts as a "maker of accommodation and empathy." To clarify, "LOL" acts
as an indication of understanding among parties present and a continuation of the conversation.
Likewise, the second particle "slash" acts as a means of changing topics in the conversation. With
the rise of these conventions, according to McWhorter, an array of "new constructions" or a new
vocabulary exists for use despite the lack of

in South Asia is of African origins (Ives 39–43). The problem starts in Africa. The African
government has not done its job to protect its wildlife. The African government needs to give the
conservation groups the funding or access they need to help save these animals; it would help to
take a huge stride forward. As it stands the groups have a hard time. Africa should give licenses to

Chestnut Bark Disease
The Chestnut blight is a fungus which is also called the chestnut bark disease. The scientific name
for this is Cryphonectria Parasitica (Murril) Barr. The organism that assaults the American chestnut
has the appearance of an extensive ulcer, and is regularly found on the tree trunk or other tree
surface range. It enters tree wounds and splits and develops in and under the bark, executing the
territory around the tree twig, extension or trunk. Yellow or orange spores (called pycnidia) radiate
from the infection, and they are as little as a pinhead. The ulcer lodging the parasite could be either

tree kicks the bucket over the ulcer, despite the fact that it may keep on sprouting beneath it. As

determined if they could own property or not. Thus, ownership of property determined your power.
By doing this, white Texans got separated from the salves who were Mexican and African American.
In chapter two, "The Little Brown Man in Gringo Land", Mexicans began to outnumber African
American sharecroppers and tenants. The immigration of Mexicans helped whiteness because of the
cheap import, which made poor whites even poorer. The needs for laborers continued, which caused
the Mexicans to get put back on the agriculture work. The immigration and presence of more
Mexicans simply hurt them in the long run. This is because as the population grew, the power of the
higher up whites did too. "The Whiteness of Cotton", Chapter three, provides graphs showing how
unbalanced the Texas farm owner numbers were, based on race. In 1940, of the 210,182 total

Scourge Alternate Ending
The stillness of the night was shattered with the sound of footsteps pounding on the uneven
pavement. Deep into the darkened, abandoned streets they ran. One after the other; a partnered duo
after the mysterious vigilante, who wreaked havoc, and tarnished Samuel's name and records.
Samuel's feet burned, his chest ached, but his steps didn't falter. The Scourge was almost in their
grasps, despite manoeuvring expertly around trash canisters, fallen objects, trying to shake them as
they darted through the darkness of the backstreets. With Kushan's help, they had managed to locate
and find their target. The two had approached The Scourge, each had his gun held up, and about to
call out 'freeze!' when The Scourge suddenly bolted. On they ran, further and deeper into the ruins
of the old city, until, eventually, The Scourge took a wrong turn into a dead–end. Samuel and
Kushan quickly lifted their Voltguns, just as the offender began to look for a way to climb the wall.

Don't move!' Samuel yelled. The Scourge paused in any attempt to escape and raised his hands over
his head. 'Right, now, take out your gun and place it on the ground,' Kushan said, 'slowly,' The
Scourge seemed to make a sighing motion before gradually taking out the gun and placing it
delicately on the ground. Cautiously, with gun still raised, Samuel approached The Scourge and
unclipped and removed the helmet. He faltered, his eyes widening, his hands shaking. He lowered
the ground with a clank.

"Carefully," Jedi Master Kaeto Vaa whispered into the darkness. She hadn't been to Ilum since she
was a child. Time had not changed the oppressive cold of the planet. Although, everything felt bleak
to Kaeto these days. Defeating the Sith Emperor had been more about vengeance, than justice. Sure,
it was easy to assure the Jedi Council that she harbored no residual anger from her time of torture

Essay about The Scourge of Terrorism
The quest for peace, happiness, and tranquility are the ultimate desires of all humans. A placid
emotional state that is individually subjective. Individuals have a right to pursue the happiness they
desire. And yet strife, injustice, want, and oppression are what most individuals on earth experience,
to varying degrees. These iniquities spawn increasing acts of terrorism and are characteristic of a
variety of despondent groups. Will terrorism be a world–wide scourge in the 21st century? What
interaction is there between terrorists and the television media? What is the responsibility of each
person on this planet to minimize the negative consequences of terrorism? September 11, 2001,
marked a significant point in the history of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a consequence the abnormal seems normal, the unthinkable thinkable, and in some countries,
such as Lebanon, the intolerable is tolerated (Said, 2006). Terrorism is a fact of life due to the news
media, who have converted terrorist leaders and groups into household names. Defining terrorism
depends on which side of the issue one may find themselves. Are the subversives of El Salvador
terrorists or a 'people's national liberation movement'? Are the contras of Nicaragua terrorists, or are
they "freedom fighters"? Terrorism, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder and an individual's
political persuasion can distort that definition. Benjamin Netanyahu, a former Israeli ambassador to
the United Nations, offered this definition of terrorism: "The deliberate and systematic murder,
maiming, and menacing of the innocent to inspire fear for political ends" (Netanyahu, 2001). In an
article written by Michael Staples, Major James Scott Taylor Jr. defines terrorism in the following
quote:
Terrorism is "usually characterized by a variety of tactics, such as assassination, hijacking,
kidnapping, sabotage, and the use of innocent victims to affect a third party. Terrorism, in short, is
the creation of fear in a population in order to force the existing system to respond to the terrorists'
demands and objectives" (Staples, 2008).

Literary Devices In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet
Quoting Romeo and Juliet
In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare portrays the inevitability of fate and futility of resisting
one's identity. This is evident, first of all, when Romeo, after slaying Tybalt, says "O, I am fortune's
fool." This is an example of alliteration, which is a sound technique that relies not on repeated
letters, but repeated sounds and is produced when a number of words with the same first consonant
sound occur close together. Shakespeare uses this technique of alliteration to create rhythm and
mood to the dialogue, as well as trying to engage the audience. Shakespeare also portrays this
theme, when Romeo says "Some consequence yet hanging in the stars/ shall bitterly begin his
fearful fate/ with his nights revels." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tell me, that I may sack/The hateful mansion." This is an example of a metaphor, which is closely
related to a simile, the differences being that similes compare two things, whilst metaphors are
phrases that are literally applied to another, using figure of speech. Shakespeare uses this technique
of metaphors to express and convey how strong the rage that took over Romeo's self control was.
Shakespeare also portrays this theme when Prince Escalus says "See, what a scourge is laid upon
your hate/That heavens finds means to kill your joys with love." This is an example of two
techniques, using metaphors and imagery. Imagery is when figurative language is used to associate
words to physical objects or features. Shakespeare uses the techniques of metaphors and imagery to
associate the emotions of the Capulet's and Montague's losses, with the image of a scourge, or a
whip. The imagery of the whip represents the fact that what they have done through the hatred that
overtook their self control and reason, has been punished. These examples of metaphors and
imagery confirm that William Shakespeare successfully represents the tyranny of the passions in
overthrowing self control and

Summary: The White Scourge
Research Paper In today's world we understand the implications of slavery and the results of a racist
culture when we look back in the past, however we do not have a strong understanding of what life
was like in the progression of equal rights immediately after the Civil War. There was a time where
whites and colored people were seen as two different species, where the lesser had no control over
his own life. We are taught about the time when the KKK reigned and wreaked havoc on the lives of
free people. But what about the transition in which there were partial freedoms issued to people of
color, yet loopholes in the system that favored white privilege? In chapter 7 of Neil Foley's The

Lars Eighner writes an article in The Texas Observer called "Bigmama Didn't Shop at Woolworths"
that gives us insight into the life of a family living in Bryan Texas. Bigmama lets us know about her
life in which she is unable to shop at regular stores and is followed around to make sure she does not
steal anything. Bigmama has to teach her granddaughter about this way of life, advising Sunny Nash
about the term "colored" in hopes that Sunny would not live a life of embarrassment or make a
mistake and get herself killed. (Eighner 29) We are shown how Bigmama has to make decisions and
influence the youth to be aware of what the world is like so that her family would survive. In 1946,
Viola Johnson receives a letter from Louisiana State University informing her that the State of
Louisiana has separate colleges for whites and colored students and that she would not be admitted
to their medical college. (Patterson) Johnson would then write a letter informing LSU that she would
be taking them to court in this issue. As time passed, Johnson would attend the southern Louisiana
College for colored students and then request again to be admitted to the Medical college at LSU.
Being denied again, Johnson would be taken on as the "ideal plaintiff" for the NAACP and go to
court against LSU for violating the 14th amendment. She would lose the court battle against LSU,
but that did not end her determination. Viola Johnson, now Doctor Viola Coleman would move to

Summary Of Jennifer A. Nelson's The Scourge
In the beginning of the book, "The Scourge" by Jennifer A. Nelson, there is a girl named Ani who
was venturing the woods within her part of the country. She was then caught by wardens searching
for those who had the disease, 'the Scourge'. Her friend Weevil was supposed to be by her side, but
he was also taken captive. The two wardens were supposed to bring 5 river people to be tested but
only brought two. Eventually, they reached the town where the governor was testing people to see if
they had the disease. That night Ani and Weevil escaped the prison like area they were in. Ani ran
near a river where a girl was in need of help. She was different from Ani, their kind didn't like each
other. Ani was seen, from there Della was also taken in to be tested. They both tested positive, and
were taken to the colony. Thn after they received their medicine, Ani accidentally got Della's thrown
away. To continue, in the middle of the book, Ani had been living in the colony for a few days now.

Jonas were dragged down there. Jonas put into a cell, and Ani was sentenced to death by snakes. The
infirmary began to flood by now, the snakes could swim, Ani already tried to pick lock the lock on
the gate but there was no hope. She eventually escaped, and ran to Jonas's cell, and released a few
others as well. All of a sudden a warden got ahold of her. But– just in time, Della and Weevil

American Culture, English And American Literature, And...
Holding degrees in American Culture, English and American Literature, and English, Dr. Neil Foley
specializes in the evolving components of race and social identity in what he calls the Borderlands:
Mexico and the American West. The White Scourge: Mexicans, Blacks, and Poor Whites in Texas
Cotton Culture bridges the gap between the narratives of two Borderlands histories, that of African–
Americans and southern history, and that of Mexican–Americans and southwestern history. Looking
at Texas, and specifically the area from Dallas in the north, Corpus Christi in the south, San Antonio
in the west, and Houston in the east, Foley analyzes how Mexicans, blacks, and poor whites
maneuvered and dealt with the racial space in this Borderlands province of cotton culture during the
first half of the twentieth century. To Foley, this area of central Texas provides an exceptional
example of Borderlands interactions because of the nature of cotton culture as compared to
plantation farming in other parts of the South. Cotton farming in central Texas relied on mostly
white share tenants, and mostly black or Mexican sharecroppers. Migrant Mexican labor was also
used to harvest crops. These three standards produced complex configurations as Mexicans began
competing with blacks for more work and both competed with whites for tenancy. Although a
southern state, Foley considers Texas "the west" of "the south." Exposed to relationships between
blacks and whites, The White Scourge begins with

##ewulf And Shield Sheafson Of Grendel And Beowulf
Grendel is used by the Christian monks to highlight the monstrous nature of the Anglo–Saxon
warrior culture by drawing parallels between Grendel and Shield Sheafson, drawing parallels
between Grendel and Beowulf, and garnering sympathy for Grendel, thus converting the Anglo–
Saxons to Christianity.
The Christian monks draw parallels between Shield Sheafson and Grendel. Though Shield Sheafson
and Grendel behave in similar ways, Shield Sheafson is described as "one good king" (3) whereas
Grendel is described as a "fiend out of hell" (9). Shield Sheafson is described as "rampaging among
foes"(3), and Grendel is described as going on "vicious raves and ravages" (13). The use of
alliteration further draws parallels between the two characters. ... Show more content on

Though the two are both bloodthirsty and brutal, Beowulf is viewed as a hero by the Anglo–Saxon
warrior culture, while Grendel is viewed as a monster. Beowulf is described after battle as being
"boltered in the blood of enemies" (29), and Grendel after battle is described as "gorged and
bloodied". Both are coated in the blood of others, however, both are viewed differently based on
whose blood it is. Since Beowulf is coated in he Danes' enemies blood, he is viewed as a hero,
however, Grendel is coated in the blood of the Danes, he is viewed as a monster. This emphasizes
the brutality of the Anglo–Saxon warrior culture. Furthermore, both Beowulf and Grendel are
excited to kill others. After Beowulf kills Grendel's mother, "the sword dripped blood, and the
swordsman was elated" (109). Before Grendel attacks Heorot, "his glee was demonic picturing the
mayhem" (49). Both are described as happy about murdering others. Through this, the Christian
monks imply that since Grendel's joy is viewed as "demonic", Beowulf's joy must also be demonic,
thus condemning the warrior culture. Additionally, both Beowulf and Grendel attack their victims
when the victims cannot do anything about it. During nighttime, Grendel "come[s] to slaughter the
sleeping troops" (109). After Grendel is killed, Beowulf "saw the monster in his resting place...
Beowulf cut the corpse's head off" (109). Attacking somebody when they are vulnerable is cruel and

The Real Campus Scourge Summary
In Frank Bruni's article "The Real Campus Scourge," the main argument that many college freshmen
are extremely lonely at the start of their college careers is supported by numerous testimonials and
statistics, which add to the credibility of the argument and ultimately make the argument very
believable. Two of the most important examples of these testimonials were those from college
student Brett Epstein and Harry Rockland–Miller, former director of the Center for Counseling and
Psychological Health at a university. Epstein's quote was the first testimonial presented by Bruni,
and needed to be strong in order for the argument to begin successfully, and it certainly was, as
Epstein saying that he "was completely freaked out" by his loneliness

In Rebecca Meads article "The Scourge of 'Relatability,'" she describes relatability in literature as
"to describe a character or a situation in which an ordinary person might see himself reflected." In
every book we read or movie we watch, it is most enjoyable when we are able to connect to the
characters and the situations that they are in. It is exhilarating for us to think about what would
happen if we were in that crazy situation that the character was in, but we just want to experience it
from a safe distance and not actually be in that situation, which enables us to sympathize with the
characters. This concept of relatability and sympathy is demonstrated throughout Jennifer Egan's
"Found Objects" and "Selling the General." The main characters, Sasha and Dolly, at first come off
as stereotypical selfish villains, but we are able to relate because they are seeking that emotional
connection that every human desires. However, just because we are able to relate to these characters
it doesn't mean we are sympathetic toward them, the characters actions and their motives behind
their actions are what defines them and ultimately make us feel either sympathetic or unsympathetic

Chapter One Of Jim Murphy's 'An American Plague'
Chapter One of of Jim Murphy's book, An American Plague, opens with the quote, 'About this time,
this destroying scourge, the malignant fever, crept in among us" (Murphy 1). This quote is
accredited to Mathew Carey in November, 1793. The term scourge is defined as, "a person or thing
that cause great trouble of suffering," and the term malignant is defined as, "tending to produce
death or deterioration." These are very strong terms with extremely negative connotative meanings.
The figurative language which is evident in the quote at the opening of Chapter One is
personification. Carey's quote give yellow fever an eerie, human–like quality when he writes, "the
destroying scourge, the malignant fever, CREPT in among us" (Murphy 1). CArey's word choices
and use of personification help to create a powerful image in the reader's mind of the threat looming
over the city of Philadelphia. Murphy uses powerful sensory language that draws on the reader's
senses of sight, smell, and hearing. Three examples of visual details include: "The sun came up, as it
had every day since the end of May, bright hot, and unrelenting" (Murphy 1). "The swamps and
marshes south of Philadelphia had already lost a great deal of water to the intense, heat, while the
Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers had receded to reveal long stretches` of their muddy, root–choked
banks" (Murphy 1). Finally, a third example is, when Murphy writes, "deep holes were dug at
various street corners to collect runoff water and

Sylvanas Windrunner Research Paper
As an undead leader who has lived through many wars, and fought off many enemies, Sylvanas
Windrunner would tear Canada up into little pieces. Sylvanas, the Warchief of the Horde, would be

favorite video game because of the game's rich storylines and characters. She is the leader, or

During her ranger days, she was a skilled huntress. After she was brought back, she gained many

as bringing the dead back to life. This comes in handy because when she kills the enemy's troops,
she can bring them back to life and have them under her control. This is similar to what Arthas did
with the Scourge, so it's a little ironic. She is also extremely powerful, although not looking like it.
She may look like a normal elven woman, but she has a plethora of charms casted onto her body,
making it nearly indestructible. Sylvans has 1,380,000 health points, which is overwhelming

Transformers Movie Pros And Cons
The Transformers franchise has been in existence since the 1980's when both its cartoon and comic
series first came out. Since then, multitudes of various television series, comic series, and films are
produced continuously to this day. Though each series' stories and characters come in a variety of
darkness, storyline, continuity, and such, the battle between the divided factions of Autobots and
Decepticons lead by Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively, remains evident between nearly all
of the variations (Fred). Despite all the changes and differences, the fans remain loyal to the
Hasbro–owned franchise. Its continued relevance today is most likely thanks to Transformers
franchise's perfect formula of fantastical escape, well–developed writing, and opportunism that, to
this day, continues to retain its popularity on medias of all kind.
As with any form of entertainment, Transformers is a place that fans choose to escape to from
reality, or at least, better cope with it in some cases. Often set in a post–war scenario where both
sides are left to abandon their home planet of Cybertron and take providence on Planet Earth, the
variations often deal with themes such as alienation, unfamiliar territories, the effects of war and the
politics behind it (Pirrello). Even while many of the cartoon series may water down the severity of
the situation, the reality remains the same between all of them, and the familiarity they provide can
make it easier to understand, also. It is a

  • 3. Analysis Of The Heat Of World War II Vivian Lei Professor Berland, Professor Warner HSHM 202: Media and Medicine in Modern America 2 December 2013 Title In 1943, in the heat of World War II, Captain Theodor Geisel, commonly known today as Dr. Seuss, published This is Ann, a pamphlet warning of the perils of malaria's mistress, the Anopholes mosquito. Disease, malaria in particular, proved to be the greatest cause of casualties in the army, even greater than those inflicted through enemy combat. Though initially aimed toward the military audience, This is Ann... She Drinks Blood! was later adapted in November 1943 by the U.S. Department of War for national circulation to war involved organizations and groups across America through Newsmaps , a publication featuring maps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cartoon succeeds in providing the direct association of Ann with malaria in a way that is visually appealing accompanied with text that is direct and approachable to all audiences, especially toward its intended young GI audience. On November 8th, 1943, the U.S. Department of War published Ann on the back of each Newsmap to circulate the message that Ann was not only spreading but was presented as a high threat to the safety of soldiers as well as the nation. The Newsmaps provided a means to both educate young cadets as well as the general public of the afflictions of WWII. This particular issue featured a map of the world showing areas of high risk for contracting malaria. While the map was a typical feature of the Newsmap publications, as indicated by its name, the November 8th issue was accompanied by an excerpt from Geisel's This is Ann... She Drinks Blood! revealing a racy Ann smirking as she sips from a cocktail glass filled with blood. Featuring Leaf and Geisel's original text, the Newsmap warned its readers that Ann was "dying to meet you", but that the threat of Ann could be avoided because "you've got the ... stuff to lick her if you will USE IT." However, the pamphlet is keen on alerting that should one "get sloppy and careless about her... she'll bat you down just as surely as a bomb, a bullet or a shell." • 5. The White Scourge, By Neil Foley The White Scourge: Mexicans, Blacks, and Poor Whites in Texas Cotton Culture In The White Scourge, Neil Foley gives detailed facts about the construction and reconstruction of whiteness and the connection of this whiteness to power, mainly on cotton culture in central Texas. Foley 's book analyzes "whiteness" through detailed analysis of race, class, and gender. What was most intriguing about this book is its comparison of whiteness on various racial groups and classes, for and how each struggled in comparison to the other in order to thrive and exist with one another. In this book, Foley shows a racial system that continues to produce both poverty material wise and poverty of where you stand racially. It is also very interesting that the system exploits not only Mexicans and Blacks, but also the poor whites who competed with them for work. In "The Old South in the Southwest," a history of race and power in the beginnings of the Republic of Texas is provided to the reader, for example, "Indians and free blacks were denied the constitutional protections accorded to whites, while Mexicans occupied a nebulous, intermediate status between (nonwhite) Indian and (marginally white) Spanish" (Foley 19), showing that the white American's were having trouble categorizing Mexicans race–wise. This was an important issue to resolve because in America, being able to have ownership of land meant power and thus meaning race determined who could and could not own property and establish ... • 7. Growing Scourge To begin with, the article, "Fighting The Growing Scourge" by Mina Bloom is reporting on the growing number of complaints about rats in Chicago. The new method of choice that seems to be cheaper and less harmful to other animals is using dry ice. Dry ice is less damaging and more effective than poison. Within the article the reporter uses official sources from media reports and USA today and spokespeople. In addition, the article "Disturbing Uptick in Lincoln Park Demand or More officers" by Mina Bloom expresses the concern for the crime rate in Lincoln Park. Due to the increase in crime rate after a woman was robbed and suffered a head injury has brought the idea and concerns of wanting more police men in Lincoln Park. She is getting her sources from the spokesperson and witnesses from the incident. The voice missing within the article is the victim herself. Furthermore, the article, "Geja's Café Just Got even More ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The sources she uses within the articles, are sources that are within the norm. She did not step out of her social barrier to receive any of the sources. In the sources, they were missing "regular" citizens. Since, she is reporting on a certain area it would be more personable to add "regular" citizens within some of the articles. In the article about the rats it talked about how construction and the mild winter caused reasons for the rat surge. I would expand on this section of the article and go into more detail as to why. Also, I would get in contact with a construction worker who has experienced rats and their views. I would suggest Mina Bloom expanding on the article about the Geja's Café opening and becoming more romantic. In the article is talked about how it has been open for 51 years and they are finally opening an outdoor area. I would expand the story after it opens and talk about the news of it being the most romantic date spot with the outdoor patio being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Describe The Roman Fasces And Explain What It Symbolized 1. Describe the Roman fasces, and explain what it symbolized The Romans felt that it was their destiny to unify many peoples, scourge transgressors and pose them. They wanted to rule the world. Greek and Etruria heavily influenced Rome. The insignia of the Etruscans was one of the most critical contributions that got passed on to Rome. Fasces was the insignia and it helped mold the Roman mentality. The Roman fasces was an ax surrounded by a bundle of birch rods, tied together with a red leather strap. These had great symbolism of their ruling, because the ax in the middle of the birch rods symbolized the state power and authority. They had the power to scourge and execute any Roman citizen that was to disobey or commit any serious crime. It served as a reminder to all, that a magistrate not only possessed the ... This was the same as single Roman– weak alone, but bound together by the cords of blood, invincible. The fasces represented the strength through unity. Therefore, the Roman government made it the official insignia. Soldiers used fasces many times to show their power and authority. When they were going to a public ceremony in front of the magistrate, they would always carry 24 fasces. 2. Explain fascism and tell how it brought the Roman Republic down The family was a picture of the state– the father was the head and everyone else obeyed him. Religion and government worked as one to please the gods and run things. They were united– fascism. Fascism is the belief that there is no transcending god and all there is, is a material universe. • 13. Vriska's Death In Webcomic Homestuck The death of an individual profoundly affects the lives of others. Whether it is literature or real life, the dead leave behind family and friends who mourn them. Their death can have a great impact on those left behind, and usually those left behind would do anything to have them back. There are many examples of this within the webcomic Homestuck, however the one that sticks out most is the death of Vriska Serket. Vriska is mostly seen as an antagonist throughout the story, and continuously does bad things. Sometimes it is hard to blame her for them. She had to continuously kill other trolls in order to feed her giant spider guardian. If she did not do this the spider would either eat Vriska or starve to death leaving Vriska alone, which ... A family of eight children whom father was a Spanish–speaking, second generation Irishman and mother who was a pure Mexican. Foley graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master of Arts Degree and attained a PH.D. in American Culture in 1990. He lives with his wife and two children. In this book, Foley uses a vast amount of archived histories as well as verbal materials to portray the construction and re– construction of whiteness and the its connection of whiteness rising to power. Narrowing it down to focus on a specific area, which is the cotton culture in central Texas, Foley breaks down whiteness through a through analysis of race, class, gender. A fascinating aspect of this book is the differences mentioned towards whiteness and the various ethno–racial classes and their tense relations to develop a meaningful existence amongst one another. The battle against this oppressive and inhuman is older than even some of the great religions of the world. The first warrior to wage against this system was probably Gautam Buddha who waged the war against this inhuman system in 6th century B.C. No doubt, Buddha was able to put some dents in the system, but after the Nirvana of Buddha, the system once again rose like a phoenix and gained strength to crush humanity. In fact, the system has proved to be the most agile and resilient against the liberal human traditions. Srinivas writes: The conversion of so called low castes to Islam and Christianity in many parts of India, and to sects such as Sikhism and Arya Samaj in Punjab and Western Uttar Pradesh, was often motivated by a desire to shed the odium attached to being low. But the converts found that it was not at all easy to shake off their caste and that, in fact, they carried it with them to new faith or sect. Indian Islam and Christianity both bear the stamp of caste system; this is not to say, however, that the caste system among Indian Christians and Muslims is same as the caste system among the Hindus. (Srinivas, 80) In fact, conversion could not provide any respite, but added to the miseries because now they were restricted by the rules of alien faith. The current paper is a study of Bama Faustina's Karukku. Bama was born into a family of Christian converts. From her childhood she followed the rites and rituals of Roman Catholic denomination. Bama's grandmother converted to Christianity to escape the tyranny of caste system, but her writings testify that Christianity turned into shackles around their feet. Removing the air forces of the world is like taking a step back in time when wars were only fought on land or sea. WWI began only eleven short years after the Wright brothers achieved powered flight in 19031 and yet aircrafts were being used for surveillance and eventually combat purposes. It is understood that these aircrafts were primitive, but they laid down the foundation for what we know today as fighter jets. The Fokker Eindecker "revolutionized air combat by successfully employing a synchronized forward –firing machine gun mounted on the engine cowling"2. Because this airplane became the first to successfully use a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What was the importance to this plane? The French plane included a machine gun attached to its propellers. Fokker went above and beyond the German's request by creating a more reliable aircraft that wouldn't allow the propellers to be damaged by the gun.6 What made Fokker's E–series revolutionary was the synchronized machine gun attached to the propellers. The gun attached to the French plane had metal plates to protect it from the bullets but Fokker realized that they were not one hundred percent protected. By devising a synchronizing machine gun with the propeller, there would be no way for the aircraft to be damaged and all the pilot had to do was point the aircraft in the direction he wanted to attact.4 The warfare of World War one was the deadliest to date due to new fighting tactics and advancements in technology. After losing the the House/Senate majority, the presidency, and possibly the Supreme Court majority on November 8th, it 's become a trend for the left to muse about the looming Trump presidency coming in 2017. Still, I was shocked when I read the headline. In what way could Trump affect the spread, transmission, or deadliness of HIV? Especially since modern medicine has ruled HIV/AIDS no longer an automatic death sentence. Of course, there is more to the presidency than the president himself. Trump will have his cabinet, advisors, etc that in the end can have drastic effects on eventual policy. Is the author spreading misinformation and fear mongering, or does he have some salient points about the effects of a Donald Trump administration? Moreover, I 'll be analyzing how well the article resonates with its specific audience, as well as a discussion of the argument's structure First and foremost, the articles audience are those who dislike Donald Trump, or dislike the idea of a Donald Trump presidency. The headline immediately implicates Trump as the person responsible for this possible resurgence of HIV/AIDS. However, this doesn't say to much about the audience, as there are people from each gender and either side of the political spectrum who disdain Donald Trump. • 27. Ted Talk Analysis In his February 2013 Ted talk "Txtng is killing language. JK!!!," the linguist John McWhorter argues against the notion that texting leads to the downfall of literacy among the younger generation. In fact, the speaker claims that texting causes the development of the "linguistic repertoire" and the formation of a new language. In order to do so, McWhorter acknowledges the status quo of the perception of texting among the older generation; texting is the "scourge" that leads to the "decline of the writing ability" of the younger generation. In response to the status quo, according to McWhorter, texting creates an "emergent complexity" of the development of literature or at least writing. At the beginning of the Ted talk, McWhorter presents a clear difference between speech and writing. However, according to McWhorter, certain aspects cross from one realm to the other over time. As a result, people can write like they speak and people can speak like they write to an extent until the emergence of texting. Despite the assertion, according to McWhorter, "texting is ... Unlike the writing of prior generations, texting embodies a new form of writing that ignores the structure and standardization of formal writing. McWhorter furthers this claim by using examples of common pragmatic particles in texting such as "LOL" and "slash." According to McWhorter, the first pragmatic particle "LOL" acts as a "maker of accommodation and empathy." To clarify, "LOL" acts as an indication of understanding among parties present and a continuation of the conversation. Likewise, the second particle "slash" acts as a means of changing topics in the conversation. In chapter two, "The Little Brown Man in Gringo Land", Mexicans began to outnumber African American sharecroppers and tenants. The immigration of Mexicans helped whiteness because of the cheap import, which made poor whites even poorer. The needs for laborers continued, which caused the Mexicans to get put back on the agriculture work. The immigration and presence of more Mexicans simply hurt them in the long run. This is because as the population grew, the power of the higher up whites did too. Are the subversives of El Salvador terrorists or a 'people's national liberation movement'? Are the contras of Nicaragua terrorists, or are they "freedom fighters"? Terrorism, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder and an individual's political persuasion can distort that definition. • 53. Literary Devices In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet Quoting Romeo and Juliet In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare portrays the inevitability of fate and futility of resisting one's identity. This is evident, first of all, when Romeo, after slaying Tybalt, says "O, I am fortune's fool." This is an example of alliteration, which is a sound technique that relies not on repeated letters, but repeated sounds and is produced when a number of words with the same first consonant sound occur close together. Shakespeare uses this technique of alliteration to create rhythm and mood to the dialogue, as well as trying to engage the audience. Shakespeare also portrays this theme when Prince Escalus says "See, what a scourge is laid upon your hate/That heavens finds means to kill your joys with love." This is an example of two techniques, using metaphors and imagery. Imagery is when figurative language is used to associate words to physical objects or features. Shakespeare uses the techniques of metaphors and imagery to associate the emotions of the Capulet's and Montague's losses, with the image of a scourge, or a whip. The imagery of the whip represents the fact that what they have done through the hatred that overtook their self control and reason, has been punished. Holding degrees in American Culture, English and American Literature, and English, Dr. Neil Foley specializes in the evolving components of race and social identity in what he calls the Borderlands: Mexico and the American West. The White Scourge: Mexicans, Blacks, and Poor Whites in Texas Cotton Culture bridges the gap between the narratives of two Borderlands histories, that of African– Americans and southern history, and that of Mexican–Americans and southwestern history. Looking at Texas, and specifically the area from Dallas in the north, Corpus Christi in the south, San Antonio in the west, and Houston in the east, Foley analyzes how Mexicans, blacks, and poor whites maneuvered and dealt with the racial space in this Borderlands province of cotton culture during the first half of the twentieth century. To Foley, this area of central Texas provides an exceptional example of Borderlands interactions because of the nature of cotton culture as compared to plantation farming in other parts of the South. Cotton farming in central Texas relied on mostly white share tenants, and mostly black or Mexican sharecroppers. Migrant Mexican labor was also used to harvest crops. These three standards produced complex configurations as Mexicans began competing with blacks for more work and both competed with whites for tenancy. Though the two are both bloodthirsty and brutal, Beowulf is viewed as a hero by the Anglo–Saxon warrior culture, while Grendel is viewed as a monster. Beowulf is described after battle as being "boltered in the blood of enemies" (29), and Grendel after battle is described as "gorged and bloodied". Both are coated in the blood of others, however, both are viewed differently based on whose blood it is. Since Beowulf is coated in he Danes' enemies blood, he is viewed as a hero, however, Grendel is coated in the blood of the Danes, he is viewed as a monster. This emphasizes the brutality of the Anglo–Saxon warrior culture. Furthermore, both Beowulf and Grendel are excited to kill others. After Beowulf kills Grendel's mother, "the sword dripped blood, and the swordsman was elated" (109). Before Grendel attacks Heorot, "his glee was demonic picturing the mayhem" (49). Both are described as happy about murdering others. Through this, the Christian monks imply that since Grendel's joy is viewed as "demonic", Beowulf's joy must also be demonic, thus condemning the warrior culture. Additionally, both Beowulf and Grendel attack their victims when the victims cannot do anything about it. During nighttime, Grendel "come[s] to slaughter the sleeping troops" (109). After Grendel is killed, Beowulf "saw the monster in his resting place... Beowulf cut the corpse's head off" (109). Attacking somebody when they are vulnerable is cruel and ... The Real Campus Scourge Summary In Frank Bruni's article "The Real Campus Scourge," the main argument that many college freshmen are extremely lonely at the start of their college careers is supported by numerous testimonials and statistics, which add to the credibility of the argument and ultimately make the argument very believable. Two of the most important examples of these testimonials were those from college student Brett Epstein and Harry Rockland–Miller, former director of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Health at a university. Epstein's quote was the first testimonial presented by Bruni, and needed to be strong in order for the argument to begin successfully, and it certainly was, as Epstein saying that he "was completely freaked out" by his loneliness ... In every book we read or movie we watch, it is most enjoyable when we are able to connect to the characters and the situations that they are in. It is exhilarating for us to think about what would happen if we were in that crazy situation that the character was in, but we just want to experience it from a safe distance and not actually be in that situation, which enables us to sympathize with the characters. This concept of relatability and sympathy is demonstrated throughout Jennifer Egan's "Found Objects" and "Selling the General." The main characters, Sasha and Dolly, at first come off as stereotypical selfish villains, but we are able to relate because they are seeking that emotional connection that every human desires. However, just because we are able to relate to these characters it doesn't mean we are sympathetic toward them, the characters actions and their motives behind their actions are what defines them and ultimately make us feel either sympathetic or unsympathetic towards them. Sasha is an extremely troubled woman, who has struggled with compulsive stealing; but she is a different kind of thief because she doesn't steal items with much financial value, she steals personal items. • 69. The Scourge: A Fictional Narrative 'Really?' Kushan's brow quirked, 'That's interesting,' 'Indeed,' his friend, David, agreed. 'The model hasn't been used for half a century, yet, somehow, The Scourge seems to have one,' The Scourge, Kushan had discovered, had been titled as such by figures in the Underworld, seeing that person as a menace. David, having secret connections to the Underworld, had just told Kushan something he felt would free Samuel of suspicion. 'You've been a big help, Dave,' Kushan shook David's hand, 'Thanks for the information, I appreciate it,' 'Anytime dude, no problem,' David playfully punched Kushan's arm. 'Tell Sammy I say 'hey' a'ight?' 'Is that with the punch?' Kushan asked with a chuckle. 'Cause I'll probably have to come back and return it,' 'Whatever man, just go already, ... 'With the mounting evidence against him, we have no choice.' 'B–but, I...' 'Kushan, it's alright,' Samuel cut in, 'I have nothing to hide; my innocence will be proven sooner or later,' *~* Within the confines of a holding cell, Samuel began to wonder how long he'd have to wait until he was proven innocent. The hissing of a door sliding open caught his attention. With only him in the holding cell, he assumed that it was a visitor for him. He didn't want to seem eager, so he simply sat upon the bed and waited. However, who it was, wasn't someone he was expecting. Samuel's jaw dropped, yet happiness filled him, when his room–mate came into view. 'Kushan, what are you doing here?' 'I was trying to tell you earlier, but you wouldn't let me finish,' Kushan started, 'The trike you own is a Stellar AC Trike.' 'Um, yeah,' Samuel frowned. 'That's the only kind you can get.' 'Exactly,' Kushan nodded. 'The trike The Scourge uses runs on fuel, so it can't be you, because your runs on solar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Chapter One Of Jim Murphy's 'An American Plague' Chapter One of of Jim Murphy's book, An American Plague, opens with the quote, 'About this time, this destroying scourge, the malignant fever, crept in among us" (Murphy 1). This quote is accredited to Mathew Carey in November, 1793. The term scourge is defined as, "a person or thing that cause great trouble of suffering," and the term malignant is defined as, "tending to produce death or deterioration." These are very strong terms with extremely negative connotative meanings. The figurative language which is evident in the quote at the opening of Chapter One is personification. Carey's quote give yellow fever an eerie, human–like quality when he writes, "the destroying scourge, the malignant fever, CREPT in among us" (Murphy 1). CArey's word choices and use of personification help to create a powerful image in the reader's mind of the threat looming over the city of Philadelphia. Murphy uses powerful sensory language that draws on the reader's senses of sight, smell, and hearing. Three examples of visual details include: "The sun came up, as it had every day since the end of May, bright hot, and unrelenting" (Murphy 1). "The swamps and marshes south of Philadelphia had already lost a great deal of water to the intense, heat, while the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers had receded to reveal long stretches` of their muddy, root–choked banks" (Murphy 1). Finally, a third example is, when Murphy writes, "deep holes were dug at various street corners to collect runoff water and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Sylvanas Windrunner Research Paper As an undead leader who has lived through many wars, and fought off many enemies, Sylvanas Windrunner would tear Canada up into little pieces. Sylvanas, the Warchief of the Horde, would be the perfect fit for getting rid of Canada, and their rebels. Sylvanas Windrunner is from the Word of Warcraft franchise. World of Warcraft is a fantasy video game that you play online, and it is my favorite video game because of the game's rich storylines and characters. She is the leader, or "warchief" of the faction called "The Horde". In early life, Sylvanas Windrunner was appointed ranger general for her homeland of Silvermoon City. During her time as a general, there was a war going on with a group of very violent people that called themselves "The Scourge". Sadly, she was murdered in the war against The Scourge alongside her brother, Lirath. The leader of The Scourge, Arthas Menethil, was a great enemy to Sylvanas Windrunner. Instead of giving her a clean ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During her ranger days, she was a skilled huntress. After she was brought back, she gained many new magical abilities. She ripped her own soul out of the underworld, and brought herself back to life. After that, she was given darker, magical powers. Sylvanas is described as having powers such as bringing the dead back to life. This comes in handy because when she kills the enemy's troops, she can bring them back to life and have them under her control. This is similar to what Arthas did with the Scourge, so it's a little ironic. She is also extremely powerful, although not looking like it. She may look like a normal elven woman, but she has a plethora of charms casted onto her body, making it nearly indestructible. Sylvans has 1,380,000 health points, which is overwhelming compared to the average human in the game. Average humans have around 400 health.. The day that Sylvanas marches to Canada with her millions of troops will be a bad day for them, but an amazing day for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Transformers Movie Pros And Cons The Transformers franchise has been in existence since the 1980's when both its cartoon and comic series first came out. Since then, multitudes of various television series, comic series, and films are produced continuously to this day. Though each series' stories and characters come in a variety of darkness, storyline, continuity, and such, the battle between the divided factions of Autobots and Decepticons lead by Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively, remains evident between nearly all of the variations (Fred). Despite all the changes and differences, the fans remain loyal to the Hasbro–owned franchise. Its continued relevance today is most likely thanks to Transformers franchise's perfect formula of fantastical escape, well–developed writing, and opportunism that, to this day, continues to retain its popularity on medias of all kind. As with any form of entertainment, Transformers is a place that fans choose to escape to from reality, or at least, better cope with it in some cases. Often set in a post–war scenario where both sides are left to abandon their home planet of Cybertron and take providence on Planet Earth, the variations often deal with themes such as alienation, unfamiliar territories, the effects of war and the politics behind it (Pirrello). Even while many of the cartoon series may water down the severity of the situation, the reality remains the same between all of them, and the familiarity they provide can make it easier to understand, also.
