Chapter 12Nervous System Suffixes -esthesia -algesia These two suffixes are similar so it becomes important to understand their differences Jesse Hintz - 7/13/10- Bio 120
-esthesia: sensation, feeling Hyperesthesia – hyper (over, above) & esthesia (feeling) Abnormal increase in sensitivity to stimuli to the senses touch, hearing, taste, etc. Anesthesia – an (without) & esthesia (feeling) Having sensation and awareness blocked temporarily Anesthetic - pharmaceutical drug that can block sensation and awareness. Can be local, regional or general.
-algesia: sensation, pain ,[object Object], Increased sensitivity to pain. This is often caused by damage to the peripheral nerves. ,[object Object], Lack of pain or sensation. Analgesic – non-narcotic medication to treat minor to moderate pain.
