2. Suffix -esthesia Pertaining to sensation. Anesthesia – absence of pain or sensation. Anesthesia can be a partial or complete loss of sensation with or without the loss of consciousness, resulting from disease, injury or administration of an anesthetic substance by injection or inhalation. Paresthesia – abnormal sensations such as burning or tingling. Often described by patients as numbness or as a prickly, stinging or burning feels. Common with the upper and lower extremities. Hyperesthesia – excessive sensations. Increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli such as pain or touch.
3. Suffix -phasia Pertaining to speech. Aphasia – the absence of impairment of the ability to communicate through speech, writing or signs because of brain dysfunction. Dysphasia – impairment of speech resulting from a brain lesion or neurodevelopmental disorder.
