in a superstitious town fighting for a beautiful girl. Brom is a Romantic hero because he has skills
without formal education, he does not fit well in society, and he is young at heart. Brom has certain
skills that he has not been formally trained in. One skill is he's ability to fight. This skill stems from
the fact he is strong and well–built and does not need to be specially trained (Irving 19). Another

sit around their spinning wheels telling each other folklore and legends. One of these legends is
about a Hessian soldier who got his head shot clean off by a cannon–ball in the Civil War. Every
night he goes out to look for his head. This is what a female story looks like during the 1800's.
Focuses on legends and myths that the women can talk about during their gossip. However, a
masculine story usually is about a hero who saves the day. Washington irving combines the two

The townspeople looked upon Ichabod as a foreigner and responded with opposition to his notions.
For example, almost immediately upon his arrival, he took a dead corpse and performed an autopsy,
something that was unheard of during this time period. He remained dedicated to his work, but had a
hostile, almost mysterious way about him.
Why is Ichabod portrayed so different in film than in script? The answer ultimately lies in society.
After watching twisted and bloody horror films, society gets hungry for something more intense,
more mysterious and unpredictable, with all of the blood and gore mixed in . People get used to
watching ordinary kidnappings and murders and wish for a more intense approach. This is why the

blossoming lass of eighteen; plump as a partridge; ripe and melting and rosy–cheeked" She was the

mainly known for her flirtatiousness toward the men around her and for being a wealthy, spoiled

In my opinion, these stories are very different. "The Raven" is about a bird, which at first irritated
and creeped him out. But in the end, it helped him find some kind of peace in Lenore's death. "The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was about a Yankee teacher, that came in to town and tried to take
advantage of Katrina's wealth. The superstition of the headless horseman ran Ichabod out of town. I
guess this poem and story were similar in the way that the headless horseman helped Katrina avoid a

Ichabod Crane's imagination was first seen in his ventures through the woods alone. While living in
the area, he was told of many supernatural tales, all of which he took seriously because of his strong
imagination. The story explains it by saying "...every sound of nature, at that witching hour, fluttered

Man named Ichabod Crane. It all takes place in 18th century New York, where we see Ichabod the
lanky, poor, school teacher attempt to court the rich and lovely Katrina Van Tassel. Ichabod comes to
Sleepy Hollow, New York, from his home state of Connecticut, to be the schoolmaster of the village.
The town of Sleepy Hollow and its inhabitants are said to be under some kind of spell or
enchantment, and the place is shrouded by supernatural rumors. Irving plays out these aspects of

They originally start off, Brom Bones, knowing that Ichabod believes in the supernatural world,
moves all the desks in Ichabod's class to scare him. Sadly and ironically it works. The irony in this is
that Ichabod is a man of intellect, a school teacher the fact that he actually believes in all of the
supernatural tales that surround Sleepy Hollow would most likely not be seen in the majority of
other schoolmasters. From the very beginning Irving shows the reader that Ichabod has fatal flaw
that will only hurt him as his conflict worsen. Later on Ichabod attends Katrina's party hoping to win
her over, sadly he is disappointed and leaves the party walking back on the dark and eerily quiet
path home. While passing the possibly haunted Major Andre's tree, otherwise known as the Headless
Horseman, Ichabod notices a shadowy figure tracing him. After calling out and receiving no
response he begins to quicken his pace attempting to lose the pursuer. This proves to no avail as the
figure takes shape, to Ichabod's horror. It is the headless horseman. Hoping on Gunpowder,
Ichabod's decrepit horse, he attempts to escape the headless horseman. The problem was that he was
not a skilled horse rider and ultimately as Ichabod looks back, but he sees the Horseman, instead of
fading away or turning back, hurl his head at him,

218). The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, written by Washington Irving, fits nicely into the Romanticism
period due to its eloquent descriptions and detail to the nature around the village, the attention and

Ichabod is what you would explain as a geek. He is overwhelmingly intelligent. He was the type of
guy you would not give a second look at, or even the time of day. He found himself to be quite the
catch though because he knew he was the most intelligent guy around. He had his eye set on the

The actor performs Icabod as a strange man who has a special way with women and is determined to
do anything for love. You really cannot dislike the character Icabod, he is a very likeable character
and almost anyone can identify with him in one way or another. The actor for Icabod was very
smooth, and he did not look like he was acting, his line delivery was on–point, clear, and able to be
heard and his movements were natural and believable. The director managed to help the actors
perform convincingly. All of the performers worked exceptionally well as an ensemble and it
appeared as the actors were friends with each other. Though there was no use of microphones, you

entrances and exits were smooth and the scene changes were made in a smooth manner as well. The

How does an author or their work get placed into an overall category theme such as Romanticism?
Is it based solely on the time period for which the author is published or is it because of the style of
their work? The reason for this puzzling question is because I originally did not understand how The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow would fit into the Romanticism period. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
contains suspense, a ghost story and a heroine with conflict but my previous understanding of
Romanticism was that the author or the works associated with it focused on a longing for love and
grand experiences in life. Much to my dismay, I could not have been further from the truth. The
romantic movement occurred in the 1800 and 1900's. There may be some confusion or discord on an
exact definition but the overall movement focused on the individual more than society, an

The narration in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow functions as a way to give authority to the women of
Tarry Town. This power of feminine is elicit by Washington Irving who gives respect and superiority
to women indirectly, but yet evidently through third person narration. Furthermore through Katrina
he parallels the power of Tarry Town's women by illustrating their agency to beget the downfall of
Ichabod.
Irving draws out Katrina Van Tassel only in relation to the farm not to demean her, but rather to
bring out her importance in the town to expose the dominance of women in Tarry Town. At the
beginning of the story Knickerbockers sets the importance of women by stating that the town's

This foreshadows that Katrina will be the desire of the town because she is the "fertile nook" of the
village where her wealth and power will be passed on to her kids. Katrina is shown as a symbol of
wealth and fertility not to degrade women, but rather to bare the fact they are needed to sustain and
conceive future generations of the town.
Katrina initiates to uphold her agency by gaining Ichabod's affections through her flirtatious conduct
which parallels with the women of town who are looked upon by Ichabod due to their storytelling
skills. The narrator uses diction to initially elicit Katrina as a modern independent lady who
