System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
The Systems development life cycle (SDLC) is a conceptual model that is used in the project
management which describes the stages involved in the information system development project,
from an initial feasibility study through maintenance of the completed application. SDLC is used to
correct problems in existing system, and to improve the system quality and structure. It certainly
makes the process easy for building a system and helps to reduce failures such as unclear objectives,
possibility of not meeting the user needs, or cost overruns. We can generally consider the SDLC in
five phases. These 5 phases are repeated until the desired or efficient output is achieved. The 5
phases of system development life cycle are:
1. Planning
2. Analysis
3. Design
4. Implementation
5. Maintenance

This phase begins when the project is defined and the appropriate resources have been selected. The
first part of the planning phase involves collecting, defining and validating functional, support and

System development life cycle is a process use for the period of development system. SDLC
contains four main steps those are analysis, planning, design and implementation during the analysis
steps of dataflow diagram used to process the model of a system. A consistency of the context

The security systems development life cycle (SecSDLC) uses the same phases as the systems
development life cycle. Although the two processes are different due to what each is used for and
the activities associated with them, Michael Whitman and Herbert Mattord claim "the overall
methodology is the same." (2012, pg. 26). Since a business, company, or an organization with a
network must consider the many technologies and methodologies available today, for an effective
security control plan, one would be remiss not to follow the SecSDLC phases:
1. The Investigation phase is engaged with "a directive from upper management, dictating the
process, outcomes, and goals of the project, as well as its budget and other constraints" (Whitman &
Mattord, 2012, pg. 26). During this phase, all interested parties discuss whether the organization has
the funds and commitment to move forward with a potential plan.
2. The Analysis phase is engaged when documentation from the investigation phase is reviewed.
The team will analyze current policies and threats, and "relevant legal issues that could affect the
design of the security solution" (Whitman & Mattord, 2012, pg. 27) as well.
3. The Logical Design phase is engaged when the analysis of the plan is complete. This phase is
where the team "creates and develops the blueprints for information security" (Whitman & Mattord,

Prior to Zachman, organizations often introduced information systems technology in direct response
to a perceived need by the organization such as the automation of a particular job function (Bernard,
2011). As Bernard notes, this became increasingly problematic as organizations evolved as did their
need for integration and communication between their system implementations. Systems developed
to meet business requirements on a case by case basis often using proprietary vendor products which

technology. "SDLC is the process of developing information systems through investigation,
analysis, design, implementation and maintenance. SDLC is also known as information systems
development or application development. SDLC is a systems approach to problem solving and is
made up of several phases, each comprised of multiple steps" (Webopedia, 2008, para.2). The
company will go through many SDLC associated activities, such as, planning, analysis, design,
development, testing, implementation and maintenance. The planning phase is an important phase

SDLC is used to correct problems in existing system, and to improve the system quality and structure. It certainly makes the process easy for building a system and helps to reduce failures such as unclear objectives, possibility of not meeting the user needs, or cost overruns. We can generally consider the SDLC in five phases. These 5 phases are repeated until the desired or efficient output is achieved. The 5 phases of system development life cycle are: 1. Planning 2.
