1. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media product
and why?
Evaluation Question 3
2. To begin with, I would need to find an institution
that distributed music magazines, but perhaps
also other products so I could create inter-
textual links between my product and others.
My three main options for this are…
3. • British company
• Established 1958
• They own NME, Uncut, Guitar and Bass
• Split into 3 sectors:
• Connect — mass market women
• SouthBank — upmarket women
• Inspire — men
4. (FROM THE IPC MEDIA WEBSITE)
“IPC Inspire is IPC's men's division. Its portfolio of 38 brands covers a huge spectrum of interests and
includes famous names from Country Life and The Field to Nuts and NME.”
TOPICS IPC COVERS:
• COUNTRY
• SHOOTING
• EQUESTRIAN
• MARINE
• SPORT
• MEN'S LIFESTYLE (Media includes Nuts magazine and Mousebreaker games which are typical of the
young male audience.)
• MUSIC
• CYCLING
• DECANTER
• TECHNOLOGY (Media includes TrustedReviews which help with electronics and IT equipment – good
for the younger generation. IPC also owns Amateur photographer and What Digital Camera which
meet the photography interests of my audience)
5. • British company
• Established 1947
• Niche market (focuses mainly on pop music)
• Used to own Smash Hits
• I don’t think this would be suitable as at the
moment it is in decline and does not publish
anything relevant to my target audience.
6. • German company
• Established 1875
• They own Kerrang and Q magazine
• Their audience is predominately
male
• They own over 300
magazines and are
multi-platform
which will be good
to create links and
get my magazine
publicity.
7. Bauer Media magazine/radio
publications which I feel will
relate to my target audience
and therefore make it a good
institution to use:
(NB: They also own many
different local radio stations.)
8. Online Presence
• The magazine could be distributed online by
Pixelmags. They currently work with Apple,
Kindle Fire and Blackberry newsstands to
distribute magazines. My magazine could also
create virtual copies on Flipsnack and upload
them to their own website so people could
access previous copies in an archive.
