Curriculum for Excellence emphasises that all children are entitled to a learning experience where they feel secure, accepted and valued as members of
their class and school community. Learning environments which have a positive influence on children, achieved by promoting inclusion and equality,
are essential to the Scottish curriculum (CfE, 2004). Getting It Right for Every Child (2007) policy supports this. Their aspiration is for all children to
be fully supported as they grow into Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors and Responsible Citizens. Therefore, teachers
and practitioners have a responsibility in ensuring children are nurtured, achieving and included.
However, although many children gain the most they can from the learning opportunities that schools provide, some will struggle to benefit fully from

In contemporary society, advancement in technology has made it imperative that individuals have proficient literacy and numeracy skills in order to
participate in society and contribute economically (Cazden & Beck, 2008; Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008). Furthermore, low literacy rates correlate to
unhealthy lifestyle and limited participation in civic life (DeWalt et al., 2004; Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008). Thus, it has become even more important
that schools prepare students with adequate literacy and numeracy skills to enable them to succeed in life and progress in their studies. However,
these demands are not necessarily being met by schools. According to Australian bureau of statistics (ABS) (2014) there has been a decline in the
literacy rates for adults, with 44% of adults lacking the literacy competency required for modern life. Furthermore, evidence suggests that school
curriculum and practices do not accommodate for linguistic diversity. PISA has gathered results from 15 years old students in the areas of science
literacy, mathematical literacy and reading literacy, which are summarised in table 1 below (Thomas, Bortoli & Underwood, 2017).

The National Numeracy Strategy was implemented in September 1999, setting a target for 75% of all pupils reaching at least level four in
mathematics by 2002. This essay will focus on the findings since the implementation of the strategy for both pupils and teachers. In order to do this I

When working with individuals or pairs, teachers need to ensure that the rest of the class is working on related tasks and exercises.
The last stage of the lesson consists of a plenary session, which lasts between ten to fifteen minutes and brings the whole class together in order to
summarise what they have learnt. This stage of the lesson should be a time to sort out any problems that children may have had, make links with other
work and to set homework.
Some plenary sessions may last longer than others depending on the outcomes for e.g. more time may be needed for explanation and discussion to

The effective practice I observed that will help with my own project and future teaching was seeing a very traditional style of lesson, that amalgamated
modern practice of short mini lessons inside of a traditional style of Math classroom.

It was valuable to see an experienced and leading teacher at the school using a concise learning intention for the students. They understood what the
framework for their success would be defined as and thus they could work towards this goal.

The main impact this lesson had on my project was seeing tasks set that catered for each student. For example one expectation was for the students to

Which is why I decided to run the National History Challenge with the SIDE Year 9. I decided not to make the challenge compulsory instead I focused
on developing interest in the extra–curriculum activity amongst the Year 9 cohort. Around half of the Year 9s I taught at SIDE were 'referral'
students; referral students come from a wide range of backgrounds and have a variety of physical, social and cognitive disabilities. I really enjoyed
the challenges of working with most of these students, however, when a few of my referral students volunteered for the National History Challenge I
was nervous, as these were not students whom I would have selected for additional extra–curriculum work. Most of these students had high levels of
anxiety and stress, which is why they were in the referral program, consequently I had some concerns about the pressure the challenge might have
placed on them. I worked hard with these students, offering small group SABA classes to allow them to collaborate, sharing their ideas and providing
each other with constructive feedback. I also scheduled fortnightly individual check in meetings where we discussed their progress and developed
individual work completion plans. Their interest and enthusiasm for their selected topics really reinforced how important it is to set high expectations
for all students regardless of circumstances.

I also support lower ability group in their phonics lesson, I prepare daily activities for this sessions and provide progress report to the teacher on
weekly basis. I play games with the children, use visual strategies and revise with them all the time to extend their phonics basics.
I also do weekly spelling tests in groups and keep records of their progress in spelling area of Literacy.
I regards to Numeracy sessions, again they often run similarly to Literacy lessons, where I get to prepare appropriate maths resources and organize the
group work or work with certain individuals. I often need to repeat teacher's instructions to re–enforce what pupils should be able to achieve and maybe
introduce follow–on tasks to extend learning of the more able pupils. I feel, I still have a lot to learn in Numeracy department, partly due to the fact
that I was not educated in the UK and the strategies for some mathematical activities are solved very differently here that I would had been used to.

As a child, I never had books read to me. It was not really part of the middle–class lifestyle in Punjab, where I was born and lived for 5 years. In
Punjab, I completed two years of early education known as LKG (lower kindergarten) and UKG (upper kindergarten). The school I went to,
although a high SES school, did not have a library where we would go to read picture books. Moreover, the books we did have for 'English' were a
compilation of poems and stories, with very few pictures. Poems or story was read by the teacher, and then told the 'moral' of the story. Nothing more.
Neither was there any extrapolation nor exploration of character or plots. Although, it was taught in school it was still a second language for me.

culture. I was often told to speak English at home, and at home I was told to speak Punjabi. Teachers who want to create equity in class may in fact, by

because the language system and grammar structure are totally different from English. It is highly likely that the level of difficulty can challenge

Punjab, I completed two years of early education known as LKG (lower kindergarten) and UKG (upper kindergarten). The school I went to,
although a high SES school, did not have a library where we would go to read picture books. Moreover, the books we did have for 'English' were a
compilation of poems and stories, with very few pictures. Poems or story was read by the teacher, and then told the 'moral' of the story. Nothing more.
Neither was there any extrapolation nor exploration of character or plots.

NAPLAN, the assessment program launched almost 9 years ago and already a subject of criticism and controversy, is becoming increasing intertwined
with education in NSW. The NSW Education Standards Authority has attempted to address what they call "falling standards" in the NSWeducation
system, implementing harsher standards that mean preventing students failing to receive a Band 8 from receiving a HSC. These "minimum
standards", backed by former minister for education Adrian Piccoli, have already garnered considerable attention and criticism. Already many parents
believe that their children will no longer be able to obtain a HSC, and they will do anything to try and "push up" their child's result– adding to the
environment of already competitive pressure which we see in schools throughout NSW, and further fuelled by so–called "NAPLAN practice books"
and aggressive private tutoring.

Learning environments which have a positive influence on children, achieved by promoting inclusion and equality, are essential to the Scottish curriculum (CfE, 2004). Getting It Right for Every Child (2007) policy supports this. Their aspiration is for all children to be fully supported as they grow into Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors and Responsible Citizens. Therefore, teachers and practitioners have a responsibility in ensuring children are nurtured, achieving and included. However, although many children gain the most they can from the learning opportunities that schools provide, some will struggle to benefit fully from their learning experiences without additional help and support (COP, 2010).
