Which is why I decided to run the National History Challenge with the SIDE Year 9. I decided not to make the challenge compulsory instead I focused
on developing interest in the extra–curriculum activity amongst the Year 9 cohort. Around half of the Year 9s I taught at SIDE were 'referral'
students; referral students come from a wide range of backgrounds and have a variety of physical, social and cognitive disabilities. I really enjoyed
the challenges of working with most of these students, however, when a few of my referral students volunteered for the National History Challenge I
was nervous, as these were not students whom I would have selected for additional extra–curriculum work. Most of these students had high levels of
anxiety and stress, which is why they were in the referral program, consequently I had some concerns about the pressure the challenge might have
placed on them. I worked hard with these students, offering small group SABA classes to allow them to collaborate, sharing their ideas and providing
each other with constructive feedback. I also scheduled fortnightly individual check in meetings where we discussed their progress and developed
individual work completion plans. Their interest and enthusiasm for their selected topics really reinforced how important it is to set high expectations
for all students regardless of circumstances.

As a child, I never had books read to me. It was not really part of the middle–class lifestyle in Punjab, where I was born and lived for 5 years. In
Punjab, I completed two years of early education known as LKG (lower kindergarten) and UKG (upper kindergarten). The school I went to,
although a high SES school, did not have a library where we would go to read picture books. Moreover, the books we did have for 'English' were a
compilation of poems and stories, with very few pictures. Poems or story was read by the teacher, and then told the 'moral' of the story. Nothing more.
Neither was there any extrapolation nor exploration of character or plots. Although, it was taught in school it was still a second language for me.

As a state school situated in a low SES area, Loganlea SHS's vocational education outperforms its academic education. Its disadvantaged geographic
location make it very hard for the school to promote literacy and numeracy development among the majority of vocational students who are with low
level of general skills and academic aspirations and lack of motivations. It is likely that subjects with cognitive engagement would not attract students
by nature.
Loganlea SHS is my second practicum placement. In this school, my teaching subject is Mandarin (Chinese). At Loganlea SHS, Chinese language
subject is offered to students from Year 7 to Year 12. Compared to other second languages, Chinese is very difficult for English speakers to learn,
because the language system and grammar structure are totally different from English. It is highly likely that the level of difficulty can challenge
students' confidence and capability and demotivate students eventually. Moreover, students in low SES families and area tend to have low
self–efficacy and motivations in learning. Low expectations on education may exert negative influence on their academic performance. In addition,
relative low level of literacy and numeracy knowledge and skills among a large number of students at Loganlea SHS may inhibit their second language

As a child, I never had books read to me. It was not really part of the middle–class lifestyle in Punjab, where I was born and lived for 5 years. In
Punjab, I completed two years of early education known as LKG (lower kindergarten) and UKG (upper kindergarten). The school I went to,
although a high SES school, did not have a library where we would go to read picture books. Moreover, the books we did have for 'English' were a
compilation of poems and stories, with very few pictures. Poems or story was read by the teacher, and then told the 'moral' of the story. Nothing more.
Neither was there any extrapolation nor exploration of character or plots.
Nieto (1992) asserts that the language students bring along impacts their learning, and teachers often want to take away the student's language and
culture. I was often told to speak English at home, and at home I was told to speak Punjabi. Teachers who want to create equity in class may in fact, by
ignoring differences, by accepting the dominant culture as a norm (Nieto, 1992). Many teachers expect that students know how to 'talk books', because
it is 'nature', however it heavily underpinned by nature (Heath, 1982). Understanding the culture and the type of home literacies students practice in is

The onset of the Middle Phase of Learning is a time of transition, many learners are keen to discover and investigate an extensive range of learning
experiences. However, some learners begin to lose interest and progress in learning may diminish. The subsequent phase for learners, is filled with
challenges. Physical, emotional, intellectual and social issues can impact upon students learning. For learners to be prepared for the senior phase of
learning, student's curiosity and enthusiasm must be nurtured and further opportunities provided to enable learners to gain knowledge and skills if

During this phase, learners are shifting from concrete to abstract thinking and have emergent capacity for higher order analysis and reflection. They are
also moving towards more rational decision making and an improved understanding of the consequences of behaviour.
Middle Phase learners have an increasing interest in ethical and moral enquiries and exploring real world social issues. For many students, the
transition from primary to secondary school can be stimulating and stress–free, while others feel fearful and hesitant as they have a powerful need to
belong and accepted by their peers. Subsequently, Middle Phase learners strive to be independent, but while outwardly

HSC Minimum Standards: Missing the Real Concern
NAPLAN, the assessment program launched almost 9 years ago and already a subject of criticism and controversy, is becoming increasing intertwined
with education in NSW. The NSW Education Standards Authority has attempted to address what they call "falling standards" in the NSWeducation
system, implementing harsher standards that mean preventing students failing to receive a Band 8 from receiving a HSC. These "minimum
standards", backed by former minister for education Adrian Piccoli, have already garnered considerable attention and criticism. Already many parents
believe that their children will no longer be able to obtain a HSC, and they will do anything to try and "push up" their child's result– adding to the
environment of already competitive pressure which we see in schools throughout NSW, and further fuelled by so–called "NAPLAN practice books"
and aggressive private tutoring.

This $340 million–dollar program could have applied its money more effectively elsewhere, instead of expecting an improvement in literacy and
numeracy while effectively holding back resources that allow parents, students, and teachers to do so. The extra pressure faced by students in the
creation of such a test based education system is expected to contribute to wider segregation of underperforming and academically successful students,
which may see HSC turnout numbers plummet. NAPLAN results are grossly inadequate to elect students which are deemed "below the standards" and
