I Twitch Awake, My Sweaty Arms And Legs Stuck In An Awkward
I twitch awake, my sweaty arms and legs stuck in an awkward position. It causes my joints to ache
and my neck to pop as I sit up. I wipe the beads of sweat off my forehead, catching my breath.
Images from my dream flash across my mind. Horrible images of blood, demons, Kallua and him.
Daemn. I didn't exactly see him, more the sensation of his telepathy force piercing my mind. It was
as if he was twisting and controlling my thoughts all over again.
It wasn't real, I try to convince myself, but no matter how much I tell myself it wasn't, a part of me
will believe he's still there, lurking.
Just be a stupid dream.
I'm already messed up as it is. I don't need my imagination confusing reality.
I stand, brushing off my jacket, and examine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He licks his lips, eyeing me up and down, before stopping at my face. His jaw drops. "Do...do you
know who this is?" he exclaims, patting the bald one on his arm.
The big guy looks confused...Well, I think he looks confused, it's hard to tell with a spider tattoo for
eyebrows. "Um, yeah...it's...it's a girl, right?"
"Not just any girl. It's the girl. The girl the Order wants," the wiry man explains, leaning down and
picking up a poster. He waves it in the other man's face. "This girl. The girl with the reward on her
head."
Spider–face takes a good few seconds to read the poster and he smiles a most toothless grin. "You're
right. We're getting out of this hell hole."
I yelp as I'm thrown over his shoulder and I manage to smash the heel of my boot into his fat face.
He cries, stumbling and his grip loosened. I shrimp down when a fist hits my square in the jaw. I
stop, pain radiating through my face, and I clench my jaw. Oh, that's going to bruise.
"That's enough from you," the wiry man squeaks, a bony finger in my face. "Behave. You're only
wanted alive but they never said how alive. Maybe we'll have a little fun before we turn you over."
I laugh, crazed. "You do realize they're just gonna kill you, the moment you hand me over?" I'm not
afraid of these men. They're stupid to trust anything on that poster. I reach for my gun, to find it
gone.
Okay, maybe not that stupid.

Being Wide Awake Research Paper
Throughout my life, I have often been unaware about my actions. I knew I wanted to get good
grades in order to make my parents proud, but I really did not see how much value education does
have. I would go through the motions of day–to–day life not really seeing the bigger picture. Now
that I am older, I see the vital importance of being "wide awake." Being "wide awake" means that
the person elevates their life, and involved in the details of life; he or she is alert and aware. I strive
to develop the skills of being awake in my life, but also in my future classroom. As individuals
investigate and become intrigued in the world around them, they can start to be aware. Becoming
more reflective will aide me in this process to becoming more involved.

I 'm Awake Before The Others
I'm awake before the others. The room is full of sleeping bodies, each bunk bed not even being more
than a few feet apart. I begin to toss and turn, it isn't long before Private Andres, one of my constant
antagonists says, "Is that you fidgeting Alice?" He started again, "I thought you would've been sent
home crying by now, little girl." Why would he even feel compelled to say these things to me? It's
the second week of basic training and I'm not just exhausted, I am near physical collapse. However,
there are a few incentives that give me the motivation to endure this tedious task. First, is obviously
my family and friends back home, they've always been so surprisingly supportive ever since the day

My thoughts are interrupted by the sergeant's words, "Private Duran! You have an important call."
With that, my thoughts drift from my own personal issue to that of a more pressing one... my dear
nephew Damien. Mom and Dad seem worried as they talk to Aunt Alice over the phone. I don't feel
good today but I don't like to tell them that because it always seems to make them more worried.
Why are they worried? Dad says it's a big day today. I have a doctor's appointment today and my
mom made my favorite breakfast, fresh blueberry pancakes. For some reason I just can't find it in
myself to eat. I'm so hungry and it smells so good but every time I try to take a bite my mouth gets
all watery... the kind of "watery" that happens before you get sick into the toilet. I look at my
parents, my mom's speaking very quietly into the phone now but I can vaguely hear her shakily say,
"He has another chemotherapy treatment today." My dad is covering his face with his hands now. It
was time to go to the doctor. I hate going to the doctor. My parents tell me they give me the
medicine to make me better but after every visit I just feel sicker. The doctor has come in and he's
talking to my parents about a medicine that would help my medicine... great more medicine, I
thought. I listened to the doctor speak, "There have been several reports from child and adult
patients who find the chemotherapy side effects much easier to handle with the addition of

Jehovah 's Witness Home Has Its Ups And Its Downs
Growing up in a Jehovah 's Witness home has its ups and its downs. Whether your parents are
Jehovah 's Witnesses or they started having a bible study, there are plenty of up sides and down
sides. Religion is a strange thing to deal with; it is also a choice for each and every individual on this
planet. As a Jehovah 's Witness, you must put gods will first, before anything. In the publications
"Questions Young People Ask: Answers That Work" Volumes from The Watchtower Bible and Tract
Society of New York, are actual young people who are Witnesses; they express the ups and the
downs. These publications refer to scriptures in the New World Transcription of the Holy Scriptures
Bible, (or in any bible you may have at home) as well as other information in encyclopedias and
dictionaries. Overall, The Young People Ask Volumes go over topics such as dealing with family,
identity, the classroom, sex, morals and love, behavior, feelings, physical change, money, time, and
worship to their God; Jehovah. (Young People Ask Vol. 1 and 2) The faith in a youth as a Jehovah 's
Witness depends on how badly they value a friendship with God, their conscience and what they
chose to do, and not to do as well as what to believe, and not to believe. In school, for example,
youths may or may not be afraid to share their belief as a Jehovah 's Witness. A Young man named
Kaleb expressed that there were plenty of time for him to talk about his beliefs, yet he let those
times pass (121). Why? Youths

Analysis Of Awake And Dreaming By Kit Pearson
In this novel Awake and Dreaming by Kit Pearson It talks about a little nine–year–old girl Theo, and
her mother Rae who are living together and are a very poor and un–wealthy family. Theo is not your
typical child during her spare time, she likes to be alone and curl up to a good book if not she is
always daydreaming about unrealistic things. Even if Theo tried making friends they wouldn't last
long since she always moved schools and switched apartments. Her mother was a smoker and
waisted all their money on clothing and expensive accessories. There was nothing about Theo's life
that was normal no loving parents to come to after school, no clean clothes, and no toys so she made
up her own fantasy. The perfect functioning family she had 2 loving ... Show more content on

In her mind the perfect family was coming home to fresh clean clothes a buffet full of food ant to
parents that would love her unconditionally but in the world that we live in today that is not
possible. "She had spent all that happy time with the family in the sort of magic adventure that
happened in books. Then, for some reason, the magic had ended and she'd been back on the fairy
again at the same moment she'd left" (Pearson page). This quote shows that dreams never last and
need to face reality before they get lost in their own word. "Then one day, on the ferry to Victoria to
meet her Aunt Sharon, Theo somehow wakes up with a loving family of her own."
(publishersweekly.com) This quote shows that all the dreams that she was having were just in her
head of unrealistic thoughts. This is problematic because she does not have real family anymore and
she does not know what it feels like to have a loving mother to care for her and any type of love in
her family. She cannot tell what is real or not anymore. When reality comes in to terms with
something that you love but cannot have. "we hope the magic will hold for this child "who weeps
inside herself" (Quill and Quire). Theo lost many things but she just needed someone to be there for
her but she has nothing no friends, no parents and nothing to call her own which keeps her always

Explain Thoreau's Metaphor Of Growsiness And Being Awake
Describe Thoreau's metaphor of "drowsiness" and being awake. How are they a description of the
average man's condition? In the morning all men awake to begin their ¨physical labor,¨ yet not many
endeavor to accomplish productive things. Previously, Thoreau asserted modern society allows men
to become machines enslaved to their farms. Therefore, men feel a burden placed on them as they
are required to work. This burden instills a sense of drowsiness upon them as they do not want to
wake to repeat the same arduous work required. He also formerly mentioned a man enslaved to their
work does not have the time to utilize their intellectual abilities, a result of their drowsiness.
Thoreau conclude, ¨ If they had not been overcome with drowsiness,

Awake of the Civil War
In the wake of the Civil War, Congress acceded to pressure to have the federal government intercede
to secure African Americans' rights. What were some of the long–range effects of that government
posture? The Union Victory in the Civil War in 1865 granted freedom to approximately 4 million
slaves, however, the process of rebuilding the South during the Reconstruction period 1865–1877
brought a lot of challenges. In 1865 and 1866 under the supervision of President Andrew Johnson,
new Southern state legislatives passed the "black codes" to control the labor and behavior of former
slaves and other African Americans. During the Radical Reconstruction in 1869, new enfranchised

Although freedom to become citizens took longer and the fight more difficult, a great number of
African Americans steadily gained various rights which accumulated over time. It is important to
note that racial segregations momentum dissipated over time as more and more blacks held positions
of authority and congressional approval overwhelmingly supported more rights for blacks.
Nonetheless, it is also imperative to consider how white supremacists such as the KKK fought to
undo the important developments. Till this day, both the executive legislative and judiciary wings of
government are constantly battling instances of racial segregation. However, the long range effects
of federal government struggle to secure equal rights for African Americans has been significant
successes in the rise of African American entrepreneurship. The proliferation of blacks in both
government and civil society, the rise of blacks in academia, sports and liberal arts are long effects
of the fight for African American rights. This has progressively opened up American society and in a
way, levelled the playing field. Also this federal government action to intervene in the affairs of the
state has lived on throughout the 21st century. Reference Carson, C., Lapsansky–Werner, E. J.

During People’S Life They Communicate When They Were Awake,
During people's life they communicate when they were awake, and when they were not talking. In
daily life, people often produce a lonely, insignificant, low self–esteem, puzzled feeling, all of these
are caused by the lack of communication with the world. In Raymond Carver's "Cathedral" he
describe how a lonely wife get through the depress by sending tape with a blind man, and how blind
man's visiting her house change the stern type in her husband, in order to let him truly see the world.

Wife's action make the husband interchange with the blind man. As the unfamiliar people, Wife use
her present in the space to make the others comfortable as well as a way to let the others admire her.
This can show when husband and blind man were watching TV, wife said: "I may just sit here ... If it
bothers you, say so. Otherwise, I may just sit here with my eyes closed until you're ready to go to
bed." (Carver 9) Wife did not want to miss anything, even she was not involved in the conversation,
she still find the other way to interact with the others. This show how communication can express
not only through talk, but also being silent. Close connection and communication allows one to
change their perceptions of others through interacting with these people. This process breaks a lot of
judgment, stereotype and misconception about the others. Carver use Wife as an implement brings
the husband and blind man to the same table, let husband know more about the blind man that were
able to know the food's location when they were eating dinner. As knowing more about each other,
they start to have conversation. Only the communication is a way to break the barrier of lack of
trust. When husband met the blind man at first, he was uncomfortable because the blind man does

Natasha Preston's Awake
I have just finnish reading a amazing book, Awake by Natasha Preston. The book I read is a realistic
fiction. To be honest this is one of the best books i've ever read. It is simple yet complex at the same
time. This story is about a young girl (Scarlett) who couldn't remember her childhood meets the love
of her life (Noah) in highschool, but he has a secret job when it comes to her. He takes her away
from her family and the two get into more trouble than the two can handle. Not only do they put
their own lives on the line but others as well. Even though Noah didn't have good intentions when
he met Scarlett the love he developed for her won. Noah couldn't watch the way others treated her,

Noah had been raised in a very unusual way his values were mostly the same, the only difference
was his belief system. When he removed Scarlett from her daily life he found that the people he
grew up around became animals. He realized that removing her from her family and those around
her hurt more than he could have ever imagined. He put her in more danger than ever intended, the
community fed on her body and tried to control her every thought. "I used to be there too, until I
realized the truth, until I had my mind unlocked."(pg.276, Preston ) Noah was outside his
community for a long time and he began to realize the faults of the community, once he did he knew
what he had to do. This was all despite the fact that he was going to have to leave all he ever knew.
A lot of pressure is put on Noah's shoulders, has to combat leaving his family and all he ever knew
or safely remove himself and Scarlett from their situation. The two ran away and they didn't get
away without a fight. Noahs father and the community leader chased them, when the men found the
couple they tried to convince them that they didn't have to go. In the end the two got away and they
started their own stories. "Today Marked the two–year anniversary of my almost death." (pg.311–

Awake My People By Judah Leib Gordon Analysis
When working with secondary sources, it is helpful to have primary sources read concordantly to
validate information expressed in the secondary source. Today's readings are focused on the
transformation of Jewish culture. The secondary source describes the transformation of Jewish
culture in Eastern Europe. Our primary sources "For Whom Do I Toil" and "Awake My People"
were written by Jewish poet Judah Leib Gordon. The poems address a number of issues that the
Jewish people were facing in Russian lands, including the embracement of Russian language and
culture by Jews and the abandonment of Hebrew and Yiddish. These are not the only themes
addressed, but to me, they seem to be the most important when analyzing how Jewish people
interacted with the world around them. Juda Leib Gordon wrote the poem "Awake My People" in
1866. This poem addresses the poet's desire for his people to embrace the new culture surrounding
them. By leaving their culture behind, Gordon believes the Jewish people can better embrace the
new world they live in. Gordon expresses how the new country that they live in lifted them from
their sorrow. Gordon appears to be addressing a community resistant to change, a community that is
fearful of a new world. Gordon wants the reader to openly conform to a ... Show more content on

expresses that he feels that those "strangers" will deviate from Jewish culture so far that there is no

Berger Family Encounters In Awake And Sing
The struggle the Berger family encounters in Awake and Sing is clearly evident by the setting
Clifford Odets sets up for his audience. Throughout the opening pages of the play, particularly in
this excerpt, the dialogue is chalk full with literary elements of mood, tone, and imagery. These
three elements each complement each other as they all provide the play with a dark, depressing, and
somber overtone. Not only does Odets provide the reader with textual and linguistic setting
elements, but the physical setting portrays a gloomy atmosphere as well. The play takes place in an
apartment in the Bronx, New York City during the Great Depression. Already, the time period of the
play, in addition to the apartment being in the poverty stricken neighborhood of the Bronx gives
context to how hard it is for the Berger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only thing in his way is the plummeting economy keeping him from a prosperous, successful,
and worry free life. These phrases, although said with hope, evoke emotion and put a sense of stress
on the reader as they learn that this family cannot live comfortably. Ralph takes off his rose colored
glasses and becomes less optimistic when he questions life by saying, "What's it for?" (Odets, 42).
The audience now sees a man struggling with his identity and purpose. Ralph's words set a strong,
dark, and continuous tone for the play that serves to encompass his entire family. Ralph continues to
focus on his working career and how he still cannot seem to provide the little things in life that he
desires. The reader is confronted with imagery that explains the reality of the Berger's situation
through the eyes of Ralph. The audience comes to realize that Ralph sleeps on a "day–bed in the
front room" (Odets, 42). Odets provides an image of a character who is questioning his place in life,
and who quite literally does not have his own personal space within his family

Emerson's Essays-Awake In Nature
Awake in Nature In the excerpt from long essay Nature, Ralph Waldo Emerson writes about his
connection to God through nature by going to nature in the state of solitude. Understanding the
nature and the world in the perception of the belief in God, Emerson finds the beauty behind the
nature, " the perpetual presence of the sublime" (7). In the love for nature, the writer connects to the
insight and transforms mind to the state of uplifting into "infinite space" to be a "particle of God"
(7). To Emerson, once the mind is in the state of solitude , embraces the spirit of childhood and
becomes invisible to egotism , an uplifting experience with nature will open. To be in solitude,

Emerson sees the nature in the connection of heaven and earth; furthermore, he describes the intense
transformation in an illustration from "the breathless noon to the grimmest night", "at what period
soever of life," he enjoys the exhalation, the moment when the ritual can be reach and God can be
found (7). In that moment of uplifting when the mind opens to the influence, Emerson feels the
solitude in which nothing can overtake in life, "no disgrace, no calamity," a deep connection that
leads him to the "infinite space" (7); in that state, he sees the circulation of the current Universal
Being. In that infinite state , he senses the blithe air, and enjoys the perfect exhalation when the wind
blows to the face, the chin, and circulates through the body, then lifts mind into the sky to reach the
stars where he can connect with heaven and earth. In there, Emerson transforms into "transparent
eye–ball" and "all the egotism vanishes" (7). To be in the state of transparent , one experiences no
boundaries between the inward and outward self, the mind unites the observing images through the
sheer transparent eye ball which shifts the "I" to become nothing, but to nature and a particle of
God. There, egotism disappears and the writer becomes "the lover of uncontained and immortal
beauty" (7), in that, he senses the beauty of

Multidimensional Characters In Clifford Odets's 'Awake And...
From the pen of esteemed playwright, Clifford Odets, comes the drama, "Awake and Sing", a play
often credited as one of the foundational pieces of American family drama. Despite being published
in 1935, nearly a century ago, Odets' characters in this classic piece still resonate with readers today.
These characters, a Jewish family struggling to make ends meet in the midst of the Great
Depression, can be identified today in numerous American family dramas, as well as in the real
world. Although Odets' characters frequently find themselves at ends with each other, Jacob, the
eldest of the family, symbolizes hope for humanity, as he has strong idealistic opinions about the

Jacob symbolizes hope for humanity, as he is educated, and carries strong, idealistic opinions about
the world he lives in. Despite being the eldest member of the household, Jacob is treated as though
he is as juvenile as Ralph and Hennie. As the other family members berate him and invalidate his
wisdom, Jacob asserts that "[he's] studying from books a whole lifetime" (Odets 74). Through
compassionate dialogue and educated political beliefs, Jacob reveals his humble optimism and hope
that Ralph will be able to pursue a much richer life than that of his current situation. His knowledge
of current events and cognizance of the world around him makes him an advocate for political
literacy, especially for the younger generation. This idea ties into his symbolism as hope for
humanity, and translates into modern times, as young adults growing up in today's tense political
climate feel pressure to educate themselves on the issues, in order to make informed choices. Jacob's
advocacy for what he believes in also serves as a strong reminder of society's hopes that children
will grow up having learned how to stand up for themselves.
By passing on his wisdom to Ralph, and encouraging him to create a better life for himself, Jacob
symbolizes hope for humanity. Throughout the course of the play, he finds himself reminiscing
about his younger days, as he says, "give me back my young days..." (Odets 74), and in turn
developing feelings of guilt for failing to change his

The Wide Awake Princess Essay
The Wide–Awake Princess is a series of fairy tale novels by popular American author E.D Baker.
While Baker is one of the most prolific writers in the genre the Wide–Awake Princess series of
novels is one of her most popular. She published the first novel in the series, The Wide–Awake
Princess in 2010 and over the next 6 years, she published 6 more titles. The Wide–Awake series
unlike the typical Princess story is a narrative told from the perspective of Sleeping Beauty without
the magic powers. Annie, Sleeping Beauty's sister plays chief protagonist on a quest to find love and
to break magical spells. Traveling to exotic and far–flung kingdoms, Annie who is impervious to
magic or curses stars as the heroine in freeing princes from animal bodies, ... Show more content on

Baker is one of the very first authors to put a spin on the Sleeping Beauty fantasy novels by making
the lead character not a sleeping princess. Princess Annie does not have the magical powers that
Gwendolyn her sister or other princesses and princes in other kingdoms have. The lack of the
mystical powers not only makes her look ordinary but also makes her impervious to spells and
curses. However, the lack of magical powers turns out to be a curse and a blessing. For instance,
when a cursed spinning well pricks her sister Gwendolyn's finger, the entire castle is sent into a deep
sleep except for her. With the kingdom at its most vulnerable, the curse becomes a blessing given
that an awake Annie can work out ways of breaking the curse. Our protagonist is an intelligent, kind
and admirable alternative to the usual flawless princess fantasy that most authors serve up. While
she was not born with the beautiful looks and magical powers of a princess, over the series she
develops a skill set and personality that make it possible for her to navigate a wide variety of
situations and gain favor. While she is always reminded that she does not fit the princess ideal, she
finds it easy to tri up love and admiration from persons who value her for herself rather than the
physical attributes. Her quest also sees her have a lot of humorous fun that is normally reserved for

Summary Of Wide Awake And Dreaming By Julie Flygare
Wide Awake and dreaming: My Expository Response. I am currently reading Wide Awake and
Dreaming: A Memoir of Narcolepsy, written by Julie Flygare. The book is about a young adult
experience the early signs associated with narcolepsy and the effect it has on her daily life as a law
student. While this book doesn't directly tie to a particular field, it does tie well with my life as well
as future plans in similar career fields. One thing I can say is that I have so far learned a lot from
flygare stories based of the 100 pages read out of 209 pages' total. I learned that law school is the
most stressful time of an individual life and that there really isn't time for much sleep. Also, the best
way to get ahead is to sit the closest to the professor

Stay Awake, Stay Alive!
Staying awake while on duty is important for many reasons. First of all, I could potentially endanger
not only myself, but also the rest of my platoon. Should an enemy slip by while I slept, they could
possibly detonate a VBIED or kill battle buddies through any number of other means. Families
could be destroyed because of my mistake.
But the damage may not stop there...
Every family would be hurt when they were forced to read the words; "I regret to inform you..." The
Army itself would have to explain to everyone that it was due to the carelessness of one SPC Swan.
If only he had not fallen asleep on duty, this whole terrible event could have been prevented. My
own family would feel ashamed of my actions...

Not only can you lose your own life but the lives of the other military members around you
wherever you're located.
When you're caught sleeping on duty there are a number of things that can result from your actions.
One can expect a negative counseling statement for sure and if enough of those are accrued, an
Article 15 under the UCMJ might occur if asked for. If it came to that, the soldier may have a loss of
pay, grade, and possibly extra duty.
In our trucks, although it is very hard to see outside, it is the key angles that the gunner, the TC, and
the driver cannot see that make you valuable. You may be looking in a vehicle at suspicious
behavior that a possible enemy could be doing while your gunner is scanning left or right at that
time. As a medic, I should be consistently aware of what's going on with our other soldiers. If
another soldier gets injured, I shouldn't have to be groggily woken up to help treat someone. That
might cause me to make a mistake if I'm not thinking clearly. Or even if I had to operate normal
soldiering skills like engaging an enemy or remembering some of our rock drills and SOPs while on
mission. These may become forgotten when in that sleepy state, and then again, I may be putting
myself or others in harm's way.
It is a failure to follow orders that cannot easily be ignored. After all, I am not just any soldier; I am
a soldier in the United States

America Must Awake from the Nightmare of the Past to the Light of a New Day
Nostalgia is America's fatal disease. We love to "go back," to talk of the good old days, to wish we
could return to an era forever gone. This rhetoric that warms our hearts, though, is, ironically, the
impetus for our national self–destruction. Nostalgia valorizes a past that never was, casts a dark
shadow of distortion across the present, and prevents us from projecting a viable, sincere vision of a
better future. When we, as a nation, say we want to go back to a time past, that's very often what
happens, for such talk sends us into a regressive downward spiral that prevents critical social
progress in America.
The American political scene is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To return to the past, you see, means so much more than the restoration of the family and the
Protestant work ethic. A lot of baggage lay beneath the gloss–covered surface of nostalgia–driven
value–speak. Inherent within such nostalgia, whose shiny surface makes it so difficult to resist, is a
desire to inhibit radical movements for social change in America, movements that have shattered the
myth that things were just fine the way they always have been. While this conservative value–speak
professes to be on the side of the family and the American work ethic(who doesn't believe in
these?), its true political agendas lay in stunting the growth of movements for change, liberation, and
freedom for all peoples in this nation and everywhere.
Since the 1960's, radical movements for social change in the United States have sought to expose
the fallacies behind the American way of life. As their efforts have shown us, ours is not a nation
where all peoples are free, where everyone gets a fair chance and justice presides. In fact, though we
as a nation believe firmly in the principles of democracy, we have often failed miserably in making
these principles a reality. Social change has thus been about striving for freedom for all peoples in
all spheres of life_economic, political, culturally, educationally...the list goes on and on. Behind all
of this change is the understanding that, contrary to establishment beliefs,

Explain Thoreau's Metaphor Of Growsiness And Being Awake.
Describe Thoreau's metaphor of "drowsiness" and being awake. How are they a description of the
average man's condition? Thoreau believes that in the morning men wake, but not because they want
to. He believes that they only wake because they have to attend work, and this fills them with a
certain drowsiness that prevents them from accomplishing their goals. However, Thoreau wakes
himself with a bath, and this is when a part of himself that is asleep the rest of the time is awakened.
Thoreau says that, "The millions are awake enough for physical labor; but only one in a million is
awake enough for effective intellectual exertion, only one in a hundred millions to a poetic or divine
life" (Thoreau 45). This is a description of the average man's condition because hardly anyone is
awake enough to have a beneficial day filled with self discovery, and intellectual progress. The
average individual is too drowsy because they do not understand how to truly become awake. The
title of this chapter ("Where I Lived, and What I Lived For") illustrates his philosophy. Explain the
connection between the physical experiences of life with one's spiritual life. ... Show more content

Summary Of The Awake System
This article emphasizes the understanding how the awake system functioning in the brain could be
causing a disruption in a person's sleep cycle. According to the article, insomnia is caused when a
person's sleep and awake systems signals become indifferent from each other. For instance, the
article indicates that a person's brain carries two different types of systems. One which is the sleep
system that sends signals that eventually helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. Two you have the
awake system where it sends out signals that put your brain into a more active state causing you to
be awake. As a result, if these awake signals do not slow down at night it causes you to stay awake
provoking insomnia. On the other hand, the article also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The article failed to explain that the epithalamus is a region within the diencephalon. Which location
is superior/posterior to the thalamus. The epithalamus consists of several structures which include
the pineal gland and secretes melatonin. For instance, the article should have included that the
secretes melatonin influences sleep/wake cycles. Why? Because this where the inhibiting activity of
each cycle happens. Another example the article claims that if awake signals do not slow down at
night you will stay awake. Arguably according to the journal of psychiatry and neuroscience (1994),
staying awake or being in a sleeping state depends on the inhibit activity each area is promoting not
necessarily be the "slowdown of signals". For example is the alerting areas of the brain are most
active at the time being, they will inhibit activity another area of the brain which has the function for
promoting sleep then that inhibition of sleep neurotransmitters will result in a stable wakefulness
state. For this reason, I believe this article contains misleading information as it claims to rely on a
strong scientific base. It is important to relate with simple terms but educates with

Comparison Of Wild Awake And Alice In Wonderland
The theme of a story acts as a guide for the writer when creating aspects of a story like setting,
atmosphere, and the world, in general. For example, the author must ask, where is the story going to
take place? Are there any special rules for this world? What is the mood of the story? By using the
theme as a guide, the author decides what to share with the audience and what to hold back. This
gives the story meaning, and it is what makes the story memorable (Tanemura). Writers must create
a believable setting as it is crucial to the reading process because it beckons the reader into the
fictional world allowing them to leave reality behind and suspend disbelief. When coupled with

May He Never Lay Awake
Music is ingrained in my soul as firmly as my first name or last. I hear a booming bass hidden
beneath each wave that washes up the shore, and watch a wonderful arpeggio as the sun rises.
Despite all the tremors of life, music has always been with me. It was an obsession that started at
birth, as my parents belted out in song throughout an otherwise quiet house. It grew slowly like a
crack in the windshield, growing larger each day. Whether it be the harmonized voices ringing
throughout the car after a victory on the little league field, or a mellow chorus sung out among
friends at a barbeque, music allowed me to escape. As I got older the affinity only grew and you

I picked up the pen and began to write. I wrote of disappointment and expectation in a couplet, "Ode

my feelings onto the page. The rhythmic pattern of a couplet resonated with me, the way it flowed
so smoothly and consistently made me feel as if I had my bass in hand grooving along effortlessly.
At that moment I made a realization that would change my life forever. My spirits were lifted
automatically, as I ran over to my computer as quick as I could. I put on my song and began writing,
it was euphoric, having my music and my poetry come together. Minutes turned into hours, and a
writing session that began at 4:00PM quickly turned to 11:00PM at. That night a fire was lit beneath
me and it's one I hope will never go away. Music is my safe place, it taught me what true passion is,
and I learned to channel that passion into all facets of my life. Music has lead me to a much more
enriched existence, and shaped me into a person I can proud

Clifford Odet's play, "Awake and Sing", and Lorraine Hansberry's play, "A Raisin in the Sun", both
revolve around the struggle of attaining the American dream during the hardships of a struggling
economy and most important the value of a family. By analyzing the main characters, Ralph and
Walter, it can be seen that even though they wish to use the insurance money to fulfill their dream
they eventually realize that with family they can survive through poverty.
Both characters are being weighed down by poverty. This brings them to dream of the life they
could live if one was giving a chance "to get to first base" and the other a chance to open up a liquor

Ralph has the option to take the money and go with his girl, but realizes he "don't want life printed

money because "times are getting worst" more and more families on the street. He finally embraces
his family as being the strength to help him get through tough times.
Walter also believes money would solve all his families problems, but is not successful in achieving
any of it. When his mother invests in the house he gets upset and goes to drink. He never takes into
consideration that his son would have his own room and his wife can have the
baby. He only thinks of him fulfilling his dream. Later, when his mom gives him money to deposit

I recently attended an event called Awake All Night at the Wake Forest University campus. Now,
normally I am not one who would go to events with loud college students and blasting dance music,
but I was persuaded to join my friends and help them in winning a raffle. As soon as I walked in we
were greeted with blasting pop music in the speakers, followed by the immediate feeling of being
overwhelmed. The rooms were filled with Wake Forest students who were dressed in clothing that
looked like most of them had had business meetings before this. While walking around, I saw a few
people casually dancing to the music, but most people were not having much of a response to it. As

What Are The Literary Devices Used In Katy Perry's Wide Awake
Zina Mekhaiel English 100 February 15th, 2014 Wide Awake by Katy Perry Many artists use in
their songs literary devices to give a certain mood or setting. In Katy Perry's song Wide Awake, she
verbalizes and portrays these devices to express her song in a personal and emotional way knowing
that many people face these situations everyday in life. Katy Perry describes her Wide Awake song
as a "dose of reality" and she admits that the song deals with much more negative emotions than

How Long Does It Usually Take You Fully Awake?
How long does it usually take to feel fully awake? One hour after waking up? Three or maybe even
four hours? It doesn't matter how long it personally takes an individual to wake up to agree that
waking up first thing in the morning is a very difficult and tedious task. With most schools starting
classes at seven in the morning, most students find it extremely difficult to stay focused and retained
key information from their classes. Pushing the high school start time back later in the morning
would allow for students to get the recommended hours of sleep needed, have a higher attendance
rate, and have a better overall performance in their studies and after school activities. Throughout
the day, through biological processes regulated by internal circadian clocks, there are periods
throughout the day where a person feels either sleepiness or wakefulness. There are different times
during the day where the circadian rhythm rises and falls, causing a change whether a person feels
awake or not. These circadian clocks range between the different age groups of people. When it
comes to adolescences, a biological shift has caused their circadian clock to be pushed back by two
hours, causing them to naturally feel more alert at night ("Sleep Drive and Your Body Clock"). This
sleep phase delay makes it difficult for adolescences to fall asleep before eleven o'clock pm.
According to Nationwide Children's Hospital, teenagers need about nine to nine and a half hours of
sleep every

begin to fracture under pressure, I soon realize it's the piano. A pain in my chest ruptures, a pain my
young heart had never felt before, I loved that piano. In a hot rage, I climb out of my bed, walk
quickly through the laundry room, into the kitchen, strait to house phone. I quickly pick up the
phone, the dial tone starts, without a single thought I dial 911. Before I know it I am talking to the
dispatcher, "911, What's your emergency?"
What's my emergency? I don't know. 911 is for serious events this is just a regular night at my
house, last time my dad poured boiling water on my mom before help came. This isn't an
emergency. A loud Pop comes from the back porch. "I'm scared", comes running out of my mouth.
"they killed my piano my dad just hit my mom my b–b–b–r–r–other is in my room please send the
nice man again" I am out of breath suddenly but I continue to tell her what is going on as fast as it
will come

Demon's That Lay Awake In 'A Nightmare On Elm Street'
Demon's that Lay Awake in Dreams Carmilla is the story of a lesbian vampire who has become
captivated with a young girl. She first meets Laura when she was 6. Carmilla puts Laura in a trance–
like state that gave her the sensation that she was dreaming the meeting of Carmilla. A Nightmare on
Elm Street is a story about a small group of teenagers being haunted by an apparition, named
Freddie Krueger, which uses dreams as gateways into the real world. Freddie uses fear as a way of
putting his victims into a trance that prevents them from escaping similar to how Carmilla offers
their deepest desire. Carmilla uses the dream like state in order to suck her victim's blood,
sometimes to the point of death. Freddie uses it to outright kill and enact revenge for the parents
who had indirectly caused his death. Dreaming allows these two, supposedly, immortal creatures to
thrive and accomplish their goals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whenever the children of A Nightmare on Elm Street fall asleep, they find themselves in rooms that

she is attacked by a man with claw–like gloves on. When he slashed Tina's dress, the tears on Tina's
dress crossed over to real life. Laura has a vivid dream about a 'sooty–black animal. To quote Le
Fanu, "I felt it spring lightly on the bed. The two broad eyes approached my face, and suddenly I felt
a stinging pain as if two large needles darted, an inch or two apart, deep into my breast" (Le Fanu

Why Should One Lie Awake Over The Relation Between Canon...
Why should one lie awake over the relation between canon and creed? The oddity of this question is
the focus of Robert W. Jenson's work, Canon and Creed. Produced within the Interpretation series
that seeks to give resources to the church catholic, Jenson takes on the burden to show how the two
resources of the church are enmeshed, interpreting and being interpreted by one another. The
"bewilderment" that many contemporaries have over the interplay between canon and creeed, as
Jenson sees it, has "slipped through our grasp," probably causing modern Christianity to lose other
parts of the church's life (2). Before delving into the meat of his book, Jenson frames the context for
the canon and creed by the analogy of the telephone–game. For Jenson, this telephone–game is what
Christians would say as proclaiming the Gospel, i.e the message, "Jesus is risen". Through the
passage of time, the community that proclaims this message loses its self–identity; that is, what
brought the community into existence at first. So, from the early church, they played a kind of
telephone–game that came under threat of losing its self–identity because the message began to 1)
lose its "living memory" to its subject and 2) in light of the glorified Jesus not quickly returning,
there was a need for "historical continuity" (4–5). Thus, the formation of canon and creed –as well
as the episcopate– by the Spirit's guidance came about so that the true gospel and institutions might
continue to be the foci

My Sweaty Nightmare and Quest for Reality

  • 1. I Twitch Awake, My Sweaty Arms And Legs Stuck In An Awkward I twitch awake, my sweaty arms and legs stuck in an awkward position. It causes my joints to ache and my neck to pop as I sit up. I wipe the beads of sweat off my forehead, catching my breath. Images from my dream flash across my mind. Horrible images of blood, demons, Kallua and him. Daemn. I didn't exactly see him, more the sensation of his telepathy force piercing my mind. It was as if he was twisting and controlling my thoughts all over again. It wasn't real, I try to convince myself, but no matter how much I tell myself it wasn't, a part of me will believe he's still there, lurking. Just be a stupid dream. I'm already messed up as it is. I don't need my imagination confusing reality. I stand, brushing off my jacket, and examine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The girl the Order wants," the wiry man explains, leaning down and picking up a poster. He waves it in the other man's face. "This girl. The girl with the reward on her head." Spider–face takes a good few seconds to read the poster and he smiles a most toothless grin. "You're right. We're getting out of this hell hole." I yelp as I'm thrown over his shoulder and I manage to smash the heel of my boot into his fat face. He cries, stumbling and his grip loosened. I shrimp down when a fist hits my square in the jaw. I stop, pain radiating through my face, and I clench my jaw. Oh, that's going to bruise. "That's enough from you," the wiry man squeaks, a bony finger in my face. "Behave. You're only wanted alive but they never said how alive. Maybe we'll have a little fun before we turn you over." I laugh, crazed. "You do realize they're just gonna kill you, the moment you hand me over?" I'm not afraid of these men. They're stupid to trust anything on that poster. I reach for my gun, to find it gone. • 3. Being Wide Awake Research Paper Throughout my life, I have often been unaware about my actions. I knew I wanted to get good grades in order to make my parents proud, but I really did not see how much value education does have. I would go through the motions of day–to–day life not really seeing the bigger picture. Now that I am older, I see the vital importance of being "wide awake." Being "wide awake" means that the person elevates their life, and involved in the details of life; he or she is alert and aware. I strive to develop the skills of being awake in my life, but also in my future classroom. As individuals investigate and become intrigued in the world around them, they can start to be aware. Becoming more reflective will aide me in this process to becoming more involved. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I begin to toss and turn, it isn't long before Private Andres, one of my constant antagonists says, "Is that you fidgeting Alice?" He started again, "I thought you would've been sent home crying by now, little girl." Why would he even feel compelled to say these things to me? It's the second week of basic training and I'm not just exhausted, I am near physical collapse. However, there are a few incentives that give me the motivation to endure this tedious task. First, is obviously my family and friends back home, they've always been so surprisingly supportive ever since the day I told them I was going to enlist in the ... I don't feel good today but I don't like to tell them that because it always seems to make them more worried. Why are they worried? Dad says it's a big day today. I have a doctor's appointment today and my mom made my favorite breakfast, fresh blueberry pancakes. For some reason I just can't find it in myself to eat. • 9. Jehovah 's Witness Home Has Its Ups And Its Downs Growing up in a Jehovah 's Witness home has its ups and its downs. Whether your parents are Jehovah 's Witnesses or they started having a bible study, there are plenty of up sides and down sides. Religion is a strange thing to deal with; it is also a choice for each and every individual on this planet. As a Jehovah 's Witness, you must put gods will first, before anything. In the publications "Questions Young People Ask: Answers That Work" Volumes from The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, are actual young people who are Witnesses; they express the ups and the downs. These publications refer to scriptures in the New World Transcription of the Holy Scriptures Bible, (or in any bible you may have at home) as well as other information in encyclopedias and dictionaries. Overall, The Young People Ask Volumes go over topics such as dealing with family, identity, the classroom, sex, morals and love, behavior, feelings, physical change, money, time, and worship to their God; Jehovah. (Young People Ask Vol. 1 and 2) The faith in a youth as a Jehovah 's Witness depends on how badly they value a friendship with God, their conscience and what they chose to do, and not to do as well as what to believe, and not to believe. In school, for example, youths may or may not be afraid to share their belief as a Jehovah 's Witness. A Young man named Kaleb expressed that there were plenty of time for him to talk about his beliefs, yet he let those times pass (121). Why? Youths ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of Awake And Dreaming By Kit Pearson In this novel Awake and Dreaming by Kit Pearson It talks about a little nine–year–old girl Theo, and her mother Rae who are living together and are a very poor and un–wealthy family. Theo is not your typical child during her spare time, she likes to be alone and curl up to a good book if not she is always daydreaming about unrealistic things. Even if Theo tried making friends they wouldn't last long since she always moved schools and switched apartments. Her mother was a smoker and waisted all their money on clothing and expensive accessories. There was nothing about Theo's life that was normal no loving parents to come to after school, no clean clothes, and no toys so she made up her own fantasy. The perfect functioning family she had 2 loving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In her mind the perfect family was coming home to fresh clean clothes a buffet full of food ant to parents that would love her unconditionally but in the world that we live in today that is not possible. "She had spent all that happy time with the family in the sort of magic adventure that happened in books. Then, for some reason, the magic had ended and she'd been back on the fairy again at the same moment she'd left" (Pearson page). This quote shows that dreams never last and need to face reality before they get lost in their own word. "Then one day, on the ferry to Victoria to meet her Aunt Sharon, Theo somehow wakes up with a loving family of her own." (publishersweekly.com) This quote shows that all the dreams that she was having were just in her head of unrealistic thoughts. This is problematic because she does not have real family anymore and she does not know what it feels like to have a loving mother to care for her and any type of love in her family. She cannot tell what is real or not anymore. When reality comes in to terms with something that you love but cannot have. "we hope the magic will hold for this child "who weeps inside herself" (Quill and Quire). • 13. Explain Thoreau's Metaphor Of Growsiness And Being Awake Describe Thoreau's metaphor of "drowsiness" and being awake. How are they a description of the average man's condition? In the morning all men awake to begin their ¨physical labor,¨ yet not many endeavor to accomplish productive things. Previously, Thoreau asserted modern society allows men to become machines enslaved to their farms. Therefore, men feel a burden placed on them as they are required to work. This burden instills a sense of drowsiness upon them as they do not want to wake to repeat the same arduous work required. He also formerly mentioned a man enslaved to their work does not have the time to utilize their intellectual abilities, a result of their drowsiness. Thoreau conclude, ¨ If they had not been overcome with drowsiness, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What were some of the long–range effects of that government posture? The Union Victory in the Civil War in 1865 granted freedom to approximately 4 million slaves, however, the process of rebuilding the South during the Reconstruction period 1865–1877 brought a lot of challenges. In 1865 and 1866 under the supervision of President Andrew Johnson, new Southern state legislatives passed the "black codes" to control the labor and behavior of former slaves and other African Americans. Although freedom to become citizens took longer and the fight more difficult, a great number of African Americans steadily gained various rights which accumulated over time. It is important to note that racial segregations momentum dissipated over time as more and more blacks held positions of authority and congressional approval overwhelmingly supported more rights for blacks. Nonetheless, it is also imperative to consider how white supremacists such as the KKK fought to undo the important developments. Till this day, both the executive legislative and judiciary wings of government are constantly battling instances of racial segregation. However, the long range effects of federal government struggle to secure equal rights for African Americans has been significant successes in the rise of African American entrepreneurship. The proliferation of blacks in both government and civil society, the rise of blacks in academia, sports and liberal arts are long effects of the fight for African American rights. This has progressively opened up American society and in a way, levelled the playing field. In daily life, people often produce a lonely, insignificant, low self–esteem, puzzled feeling, all of these are caused by the lack of communication with the world. To be honest this is one of the best books i've ever read. It is simple yet complex at the same time. He put her in more danger than ever intended, the community fed on her body and tried to control her every thought. Awake My People By Judah Leib Gordon Analysis When working with secondary sources, it is helpful to have primary sources read concordantly to validate information expressed in the secondary source. Today's readings are focused on the transformation of Jewish culture. The secondary source describes the transformation of Jewish culture in Eastern Europe. Our primary sources "For Whom Do I Toil" and "Awake My People" were written by Jewish poet Judah Leib Gordon. The poems address a number of issues that the Jewish people were facing in Russian lands, including the embracement of Russian language and culture by Jews and the abandonment of Hebrew and Yiddish. These are not the only themes addressed, but to me, they seem to be the most important when analyzing how Jewish people interacted with the world around them. Juda Leib Gordon wrote the poem "Awake My People" in 1866. This poem addresses the poet's desire for his people to embrace the new culture surrounding them. By leaving their culture behind, Gordon believes the Jewish people can better embrace the new world they live in. Gordon expresses how the new country that they live in lifted them from their sorrow. Gordon appears to be addressing a community resistant to change, a community that is fearful of a new world. Gordon wants the reader to openly conform to a ... Throughout the opening pages of the play, particularly in this excerpt, the dialogue is chalk full with literary elements of mood, tone, and imagery. These three elements each complement each other as they all provide the play with a dark, depressing, and somber overtone. Not only does Odets provide the reader with textual and linguistic setting elements, but the physical setting portrays a gloomy atmosphere as well. The play takes place in an apartment in the Bronx, New York City during the Great Depression. Already, the time period of the play, in addition to the apartment being in the poverty stricken neighborhood of the Bronx gives context to how hard it is for the Berger ... Ralph continues to focus on his working career and how he still cannot seem to provide the little things in life that he desires. The reader is confronted with imagery that explains the reality of the Berger's situation through the eyes of Ralph. Understanding the nature and the world in the perception of the belief in God, Emerson finds the beauty behind the nature, " the perpetual presence of the sublime" (7). In the love for nature, the writer connects to the insight and transforms mind to the state of uplifting into "infinite space" to be a "particle of God" (7). In that moment of uplifting when the mind opens to the influence, Emerson feels the solitude in which nothing can overtake in life, "no disgrace, no calamity," a deep connection that leads him to the "infinite space" (7); in that state, he sees the circulation of the current Universal Being. From the pen of esteemed playwright, Clifford Odets, comes the drama, "Awake and Sing", a play often credited as one of the foundational pieces of American family drama. Despite being published in 1935, nearly a century ago, Odets' characters in this classic piece still resonate with readers today. These characters, a Jewish family struggling to make ends meet in the midst of the Great Depression, can be identified today in numerous American family dramas, as well as in the real world. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jacob symbolizes hope for humanity, as he is educated, and carries strong, idealistic opinions about the world he lives in. Despite being the eldest member of the household, Jacob is treated as though he is as juvenile as Ralph and Hennie. As the other family members berate him and invalidate his wisdom, Jacob asserts that "[he's] studying from books a whole lifetime" (Odets 74). Through compassionate dialogue and educated political beliefs, Jacob reveals his humble optimism and hope that Ralph will be able to pursue a much richer life than that of his current situation. His knowledge of current events and cognizance of the world around him makes him an advocate for political literacy, especially for the younger generation. This idea ties into his symbolism as hope for humanity, and translates into modern times, as young adults growing up in today's tense political climate feel pressure to educate themselves on the issues, in order to make informed choices. Jacob's advocacy for what he believes in also serves as a strong reminder of society's hopes that children will grow up having learned how to stand up for themselves. By passing on his wisdom to Ralph, and encouraging him to create a better life for himself, Jacob symbolizes hope for humanity. The Wide–Awake series unlike the typical Princess story is a narrative told from the perspective of Sleeping Beauty without the magic powers. Baker is one of the very first authors to put a spin on the Sleeping Beauty fantasy novels by making the lead character not a sleeping princess. Princess Annie does not have the magical powers that Gwendolyn her sister or other princesses and princes in other kingdoms have. The lack of the mystical powers not only makes her look ordinary but also makes her impervious to spells and curses. However, the lack of magical powers turns out to be a curse and a blessing. For instance, when a cursed spinning well pricks her sister Gwendolyn's finger, the entire castle is sent into a deep sleep except for her. With the kingdom at its most vulnerable, the curse becomes a blessing given that an awake Annie can work out ways of breaking the curse. Our protagonist is an intelligent, kind and admirable alternative to the usual flawless princess fantasy that most authors serve up. While she was not born with the beautiful looks and magical powers of a princess, over the series she develops a skill set and personality that make it possible for her to navigate a wide variety of situations and gain favor. While she is always reminded that she does not fit the princess ideal, she finds it easy to tri up love and admiration from persons who value her for herself rather than the physical attributes. We love to "go back," to talk of the good old days, to wish we could return to an era forever gone. This rhetoric that warms our hearts, though, is, ironically, the impetus for our national self–destruction. Nostalgia valorizes a past that never was, casts a dark shadow of distortion across the present, and prevents us from projecting a viable, sincere vision of a better future. While this conservative value–speak professes to be on the side of the family and the American work ethic(who doesn't believe in these?), its true political agendas lay in stunting the growth of movements for change, liberation, and freedom for all peoples in this nation and everywhere. Since the 1960's, radical movements for social change in the United States have sought to expose the fallacies behind the American way of life. Thoreau believes that in the morning men wake, but not because they want to. He believes that they only wake because they have to attend work, and this fills them with a certain drowsiness that prevents them from accomplishing their goals. However, Thoreau wakes himself with a bath, and this is when a part of himself that is asleep the rest of the time is awakened. Thoreau says that, "The millions are awake enough for physical labor; but only one in a million is awake enough for effective intellectual exertion, only one in a hundred millions to a poetic or divine life" (Thoreau 45). This is a description of the average man's condition because hardly anyone is awake enough to have a beneficial day filled with self discovery, and intellectual progress. • 53. Comparison Of Wild Awake And Alice In Wonderland The theme of a story acts as a guide for the writer when creating aspects of a story like setting, atmosphere, and the world, in general. For example, the author must ask, where is the story going to take place? Are there any special rules for this world? What is the mood of the story? By using the theme as a guide, the author decides what to share with the audience and what to hold back. This gives the story meaning, and it is what makes the story memorable (Tanemura). • 55. May He Never Lay Awake Music is ingrained in my soul as firmly as my first name or last. I hear a booming bass hidden beneath each wave that washes up the shore, and watch a wonderful arpeggio as the sun rises. Despite all the tremors of life, music has always been with me. It was an obsession that started at birth, as my parents belted out in song throughout an otherwise quiet house. It grew slowly like a crack in the windshield, growing larger each day. Whether it be the harmonized voices ringing throughout the car after a victory on the little league field, or a mellow chorus sung out among friends at a barbeque, music allowed me to escape. At that moment I made a realization that would change my life forever. My spirits were lifted automatically, as I ran over to my computer as quick as I could. I put on my song and began writing, it was euphoric, having my music and my poetry come together. Minutes turned into hours, and a writing session that began at 4:00PM quickly turned to 11:00PM at. That night a fire was lit beneath me and it's one I hope will never go away. Clifford Odet's play, "Awake and Sing", and Lorraine Hansberry's play, "A Raisin in the Sun", both revolve around the struggle of attaining the American dream during the hardships of a struggling economy and most important the value of a family. Both characters are being weighed down by poverty. Now, normally I am not one who would go to events with loud college students and blasting dance music, but I was persuaded to join my friends and help them in winning a raffle. As soon as I walked in we were greeted with blasting pop music in the speakers, followed by the immediate feeling of being overwhelmed. The rooms were filled with Wake Forest students who were dressed in clothing that looked like most of them had had business meetings before this. While walking around, I saw a few people casually dancing to the music, but most people were not having much of a response to it. The audience seemed entranced by the performance and when it ended they all clapped for her in awe of the performance. I found it strange how just by going downstairs the feeling of the environment changed drastically. We had just come from a blasting bass that was so powerful it shook our chests, and walked into a calming acoustic jam session. There were way more people gathered in the small tight–knit room with the acoustic open mic night then there had been in the huge open room with the blasting pop music and giant dance floor. I found that interesting and began to ponder why that was. Upstairs no doubtedly played music by a lot of African American artists, specifically 90's rap and R&B. • 67. How Long Does It Usually Take You Fully Awake? How long does it usually take to feel fully awake? One hour after waking up? Three or maybe even four hours? It doesn't matter how long it personally takes an individual to wake up to agree that waking up first thing in the morning is a very difficult and tedious task. With most schools starting classes at seven in the morning, most students find it extremely difficult to stay focused and retained key information from their classes. Pushing the high school start time back later in the morning would allow for students to get the recommended hours of sleep needed, have a higher attendance rate, and have a better overall performance in their studies and after school activities. Throughout the day, through biological processes regulated by internal circadian clocks, there are periods throughout the day where a person feels either sleepiness or wakefulness. There are different times during the day where the circadian rhythm rises and falls, causing a change whether a person feels awake or not. These circadian clocks range between the different age groups of people. When it comes to adolescences, a biological shift has caused their circadian clock to be pushed back by two hours, causing them to naturally feel more alert at night ("Sleep Drive and Your Body Clock"). This sleep phase delay makes it difficult for adolescences to fall asleep before eleven o'clock pm. • 77. Why Should One Lie Awake Over The Relation Between Canon... Why should one lie awake over the relation between canon and creed? The oddity of this question is the focus of Robert W. Jenson's work, Canon and Creed. Produced within the Interpretation series that seeks to give resources to the church catholic, Jenson takes on the burden to show how the two resources of the church are enmeshed, interpreting and being interpreted by one another. The "bewilderment" that many contemporaries have over the interplay between canon and creeed, as Jenson sees it, has "slipped through our grasp," probably causing modern Christianity to lose other parts of the church's life (2). Before delving into the meat of his book, Jenson frames the context for the canon and creed by the analogy of the telephone–game. For Jenson, this telephone–game is what Christians would say as proclaiming the Gospel, i.e the message, "Jesus is risen". Through the passage of time, the community that proclaims this message loses its self–identity; that is, what brought the community into existence at first. So, from the early church, they played a kind of telephone–game that came under threat of losing its self–identity because the message began to 1) lose its "living memory" to its subject and 2) in light of the glorified Jesus not quickly returning, there was a need for "historical continuity" (4–5). Thus, the formation of canon and creed –as well as the episcopate– by the Spirit's guidance came about so that the true gospel and institutions might continue to be the foci ...
