Principle of Persuasion: The door–in–the–face (DITF) technique is a simple, yet effective two–step
technique to gaining behavioral compliance from a recipient. This technique works by first making a
costly, large initial request that the recipient of the message will most likely decline, and then
following up the initial request with a smaller, less costly, and more realistic one (Rodafinos,
Vucevic, & Sideridis, 2005). Meanwhile, compliance with the smaller, less costly request is what the
user has been aspiring to attain all along. The DITF technique is persuasive and effective in attaining
the desired request due to several reasons: First, people are a lot more likely to comply with the
second request when it is contrasted against the initial large request. This makes the second request
seem a lot smaller than it may actually be and therefore, a lot more reasonable to comply with.
Second, DITF is effective due to the norm of reciprocity, which states that people generally feel
compelled to return a favor; if one person gives something up, so too should the other. In the door–
in–the–face technique, when we give up the larger initial request and figuratively settle for the
smaller request, the receiver feels obligated to return the favor and satisfy our request. Furthermore,
DITF is effective because in refusing the more costly initial request, the user may experience guilt
and emotionally persuade themselves to oblige with the second request to avoid this negative

Anti–smoking campaigns aim to induce attitude changes that will cause a behavioural change of not
smoking, by employing techniques that target the central or peripheral route processing. The central
route prompts reasoning and analysis of arguments, persuading the audience through the message's
content. The peripheral route uses visual cues to appeal to emotions. Each route stimulates differing
depths of understanding about the consequences of smoking, and thus, varying levels of

Life is like a massive highway that have infinite routes anyone can choose take to reach some type
of designated goal. Those various routes lead to distinct exits, where one can discover a group or
groups that share similarities dealing with viewpoints, beliefs, or understanding towards a particular
goal. These groups can be identified as discourse communities. According to, "The Concept of
Discourse Community," in the textbook, Writing About Writing, John Swales stressed that in order
to be classified as a discourse community the group has to have all six defining characteristics.
Swales emphasized, "A discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals,
mechanisms of intercommunication among its members, uses its participatory mechanisms
primarily to provide information and feedback, utilities and hence processes one or more genres in
the communicative furtherance of its aims, acquires specific lexis, and has a threshold level of
members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discourse expertise" (Swales, 221–222).
Keeping this key detail in mind, there is numerous type of discourse out there.
An example of a discourse community I choose to talk about in this paper is the JPS Nail Salon
located near Elvis Presley Boulevard. I recently became a part of this particular discourse

Over the years I started to wonder what the most effective way was to address new customers.
Sometimes I would approach them and before I say a word they already dismiss me with an, "I'm
good, thanks." Making it quite clear they don't want my help or anything I'm selling. So I started to

When I look in the mirror, I see who I have become and how I got to where I am. When around
others, I feel as though I wear a figurative mask to hide who I am inside. Even the closest of my
friends think I'm just a happy and cheerful person. I constantly yearn for something more, but I'm
never totally sure of what it is I want. Although I do have some ideas for goals I hope to attain, with

Reading The Same Book Over And Over
Imagine reading the same book over and over and over again. After about the fifth time it would
start to get boring. College professors have to read multiple papers and it tends to get boring when
they all sound the same. When writing, students do not venture out and get creative. Writing in
English is all about perception and varies from person to person. Every piece of writing should be
different and based on each individual 's perspective. Sometimes students do not venture out and get
creative with their writing, they stick to the bland and boring basic ways that everyone else uses. In
the article Freirean Voices, Student Choices, a college professor at Mid Michigan Community
College explains the problems students and teachers face with writing and how he has worked to fix

In an ordinary day we come across many events that are open opportunities to try something that
might make us an outsider or not fit in. What most individuals do not do is take advantage of these

A man runs into a building full of people and starts shouting about a gas leak in the walls and that
everyone needs to evacuate. He´s frantic and dishevelled, and a bit unorganized. No one moves.
Now, take the same guy and put him in a police uniform or calm him down, put him in new clothes,
and give him a badge. Now, everyone's rushing out the door. Why is everyone suddenly so willing to

Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy, is a lawyer from the rural south that advocates for mostly
children on death row. He spends most of his time in low income communities with next to no hope.
His TED talk was based on his experiences in these communities, his career, and his knowledge
regarding minorities while addressing his predominately financially stable, White audience. Trying
to persuade an audience that is not effected by what you are trying to speak against is hard, however,
Bryan Stevenson is able to do so. Bryan Stevenson's 2012 TED talk uses ethos to persuade his
audience by using his status as a prominent lawyer and an everyday person who many people know

Understanding The Attitudes Of Others
Understanding the attitudes of others is critical in attempting persuasion. In the elaboration
likelihood model (ELM), persuasion splits into two routes: peripheral and central routes. These
routes determine the course of decision making; both are dependent on the individual's ability and
motivation (Gilovich et al., 2013). The proverb, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make
him drink, is an assumption in that certain individuals will never change their attitudes. If the
proverb were true, then persuasion would have no credibility; so, this research paper will dispute the
proverb. There are ways to persuade and influence others, even if they are as stubborn as the horse
that will not drink. By reviewing past research on persuasion, resistance to persuasion, persistence
of change, and the effects of involvement on persuasion, this paper will give support that certain
methods can be done to change attitudes, leading to a higher chance of persuasion. Our experiences
and the experiences of those around us help create the beliefs which assist our decision making.
There are those individuals that strongly hold true to their personal beliefs and those who feel
uncertain towards their beliefs. Swann, Pelham and Chidester's (1988) research attempted to change

Through the use of differentiated segmentation as a marketing method, GEICO has revised the
promotional means of their ad to specifically gender target their consumers by altering the food item

There are no obvious calls to action, slogans, or taglines. The BOI logo has a prominent place at the
top of the page, however, it looks more like letterhead than a true ad. The black and white doesn't

designed to filter potential applicants because the ad itself will not entice those without extremely
high motivation and capacity to engage with it. In fact, it took our group several minutes of flipping

I will highlight how the commercial uses Ranks Model of Persuasion, starting with the intensify and
downplay strategies that I observed from watching the Magic Bullet Commercial. The strategies and
tactics that the persuaders used worked well, by the end of the commercial I wanted the product they

What if you were told that the potential president of the United States, Hillary Clinton, had an
illness that could possibly make her incapable of running the country? How would you react?
Apparently there is more to Clinton than we know. This analysis will over view the YouTube video
of "Hillary Clintons Illness Revealed" by Dr. Ted Noel. Noel goes in depth about Clinton's potential
disease and his evidence he researched on incidents that make Clinton susceptible to being linked to
Parkinson's disease. Even though there are incidents where Clinton's actions question whether she
has the disease or not, there is no proof yet that she has the disease. This topic will go into detail
about Dr. Noel's theory and whether or not Clinton is capable of withholding the presidential
position. The reasoning for this analysis of Dr. Noel's video on Clinton's potential disease is to
analyze the structure of his the claims made on Clinton with his use of word choice, deductive
reasoning, ethos, logos and pathos Most people use word choice on a regular basis and do not even
realize. Speakers, bloggers, YouTubers, television ads, etc., use word choice to make their argument
richer and to increase the impression they are making on their audience. There are several examples

Bowling For Columbine Documentary Essay
Documentary reflection
The assignment task for Term two was for a small group of people (three), to create a documentary
and then each person to write a reflection. Before starting this documentary, we studied the history
and development of documentaries. We then looked more into how different documentaries,
Spellbound (objective) and Bowling for Columbine (subjective), how each separate style was
created and made and how each different style affected people.
We ran into conflict when we were choosing what topic for our documentary. We all had many ideas
but most of them we had to rule out because they would not be suitable for Year 5 and 6. The target

We added some funny videos to please the target audience.
We interviewed most of or interviewees in a classroom. The reason why we choose this area is that
because when a student is at school, they are constantly in a classroom. So soon enough many feel
more comfortable in a classroom than other places. We interviewed some grade tens were their bags
are. We assumed they would be more honest if they were interviewed somewhere that was familiar
and in a sense comforting because if they feel comfortable, they would normally be more truthful.
We chose to do a mid shot because when most people are nervous, they tend to move their feet and
we didn't want to show them nervous to be interviewed. We also used different camera angles to
show different people. Some were smaller, so we lowered the angle and where the camera was
positioned.
From watching 'Bowling for Columbine' and 'Spellbound', we decided to choose a subjective
documentary because we were all more interested in 'Bowling for Columbine' than 'Spellbound'.
When editing we looked at what 'Bowling for Columbine' did with editing things together and things
out to get what our point across more affected.
When working in a group, we found it hard to balance out the roles, but I think we did. I was the
editor and camera person which is a great duo because I imagined what I wanted to do with the
