Essay On The Fall Of The Aztec Empire
Often times people forget just how significant the fall of the Aztec empire is to our current culture. If
the Spanish never invaded the Aztec's there are a number of things that would be different today
such as Christianity might not have been spread because the Aztec's believed in serving many Gods
as well as effects such as the expansion of Mexico or the non–existence of the Alamo. It is easy for
people to analyze the culture we live in but they frequently neglect how it became this way. The
cultural encounter of Spanish invading the Aztecs in the 1500's was critical to world historic paths
because they helped guide the Spanish to colonize the Americas as well as the creation of Mexico all
caused by a number of factors such as religion, disease and War strategy.

Warfare tactics, disease, and religion all let to the fall of the Aztec Empire, but the great fall of this
kingdom led to influential products. Out of each one of the factors that contributed to the collapse
came an enlightenment of new and more westernized civilization. The success of their Spaniard's
conquest led to the establishment of the Americas and Mexico. It cultivated modern day Mexico's
traditions as well as the Spanish language. It spread the belief of monotheism Christianity that
would be prominent in the Americas. The new colonies were more developed and advanced than
when the Aztecs ruled. In many ways, the Spanish helped the Aztec's prosper, not all of the Aztec
traditions were demolished but could be better spread and adapted now that the Spanish were in
charge. Most importantly the Spanish helped lay down a firm foundation for customs to be
interchanged and enhanced. The cultural encounter of the Spanish invading the Aztecs was
instrumental to the growth and progress of the society we live in

Tenochtitl Capital Of The Aztec Empire
Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Aztec empire. It was one of the largest cities in the world in 1521.
It evolved from a small settlement on an island in the western marshes of Lake
Texcoco, into the mighty political, economic and religious center of the largest empire in Pre
Columbian Mexico in less than 200 years. Tenochtitlan was a city of great wealth at the time.
Most construction of Tenochtitlan took place during the reigns of four Aztec kings beginning in the
1470s. The ruins of the once great Aztec city are still visible today a thousand years later. Canals and
rivers ran throughout the city and canoes were used to transport people and goods throughout the
city. There were also 2 aqueducts that supplied the city with fresh
water.

Father Diego Dur An Advocate For The Aztecs Of The Aztec...
Father Diego Durán was a Dominican priest in Mexico after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec
Empire. He was born in Selville, Spain in 1537 but moved to New Spain as a child. He originally
lived in Texcoco but eventually moved to Mexico City and became a priest in 1556. He became
fluent in the native language Nahuatl and gained the inhabitants' trust with his understanding nature
and respect for their culture. He used his experiences and access to first hand knowledge to write
three books, The Ancient Calendar, The History of the Indies of New Spain, and The Book of Gods
and Rites, collectively known as the Durán Codex.
Durán was an advocate for the Aztecs living in New Spain, but he was still a Catholic priest who
saw everything he did through the lense of potential conversion. During his extensive study of the
local culture he came to see the parallels between his faith and indigenous religion as evidence of
Abrahamic religion having been brought to the New World and corrupted by the Devil. The only
way, according to Durán, to truly root out the satanic practices of the Mesoamerican religions was to
understand them. He wrote the Durán Codex to both help that missionary work and satisfy his own
curiosity.
The Book of Gods and Rites was written from 1574 to 1576. Fifty years before that, Hernan Cortez
had taken over the Aztec Empire and toppled it's capital city Tenochtitlan. After the Spanish took
over most of South and Mesoamerica, the remaining people who hadn't been

We are the Mexica, but are now known as the Aztec. We are the indigenous people of the Valley of
Mexico, rulers of the Aztec empire. We were strong and dominant and worked as mercenary soldier;
hired professional militias who fought for other groups. We use to live in Aztlan before we made our
journey and founded our new home Tenochtitlan. The legend of finding our territory starts from an
order we received from a vision from our central deity, Huitzilopochtli.
Huitzilopochtli (hummingbird of the left or of the south) was the Sun and War god. We were
instructed to leave our home and depart on an expedition to find the promise land. Our god spoke
prophecy to us and told us about his vision. He told us when we saw an eagle perched on a prickly
pear cactus devouring a snake that we would reach our new home, the place we would build our
powerful empire. After a centuries voyage, in 1325, we reached the Lake of Texcoco, in the middle
of it there was an island and on this island low and behold Huitzilopochtli prophecy that was spoken
over us was fulfilled. There was an eagle on a cactus eating a snake. We had finally reached our
promise land where we ended our vigorous pilgrimage and found our resting place and home of our
new dominant kingdom. We called it Tenochtitlan, place of the prickly pear. Tenochtitlan ultimately
was an island, inside the walls of our city it was crisscrossed with canals dividing the city into four
cardinal directions. We set it up along gridline and

Empire: Government In The Aztec Empire
Government in the Aztec Empire:
The Aztec Empire was not an 'empire' in the classic sense of the word. They did not dictate every
aspect of life for the conquered city states. In most cases, conquered cities were allowed to keep
their original rulers and ways of life. This was usually a form of monarchy or dictatorship where
there was a king who ruled over the city with a structure of government officials below them. The
only thing required of the city states by the empire was a form of tribute. This varied from location
to location. Thus, the real structure of the empire was held up with a tribute system payed to the
heads of the members of the Triple Alliance. The Triple Alliance was an alliance between the

The World Of The Aztec Empire
How was Cortes with 508 soldiers able to conquer the Aztec Empire with millions of peoples inside
its borders? Cortes was able to conquer the Aztec people for several different reasons. The Aztecs
had a very harsh tribute system that was not popular among the other peoples of Mexico. This
ferocious tribute system allowed Cortes to act as a "liberator" of some sort. Additionally, with the
Spanish came several diseases the Aztec peoples had never encountered. The spread of diseases such
as small pox and many others drastically reduced the Aztec population and sped up Cortes' cause.
Malintzin, a tribal girl given as a gift to Cortes, was helpful in translating local dialects and
communicating amongst Amerindians. Also an important aspect of ... Show more content on

As the majority of those who were sacrificed were war captives who opposed the Aztecs, they
obviously greatly feared the brutal tribute system. However not only war captives were sacrifices,
common adults and children were also sacrificed at times. Cortes himself was disgusted at the
thought of human sacrifice, this allowed him to gain Indian allies as well as gain respect among
Mexican tribes that feared and opposed the Aztecs. The majority of the population feared the
process therefore making Cortes, whom despised the process, an appealing alternative. Many
followed Cortes as they shared the same views on the 'human sacrifice ' topic. Because Cortes posed
to eliminate the Aztecs it allowed him to appear as a liberator of the tyranny of the Aztec rule.
Secondly, a relatively minor cause for Cortes ' success was the issue of disease among the Aztecs.
Although this was a fairly feeble reason it actually greatly benefited the Spanish in reducing the
Aztec population. The Spanish brought smallpox to Mexico, said to be linked to an infected slave
arriving from Spanish Cuba, which caused great suffering to the Aztecs. The Spanish were immune
to the disease so it posed no threat to Cortes ' own men. The Aztecs were demoralized by the
mysterious illness that killed Indians and spared Spaniards, as if advertising the Spaniards '
invincibility. One negative aspect for Cortes however was that his Indian allies suffered from the

One of the most advanced civilizations of the ancient world was thriving for centuries in Central
America. This empire had built magnificent temples, was plentiful with gold and silver, and was
brought to its knees by the Spaniards. The Aztecs. This mysterious, unworldly nation was destroyed
in less than a month's time. The Spaniards, who erased hundreds of years of history and culture,
were honored and held in high regard, but at a price. The destruction and carnage that the Spaniards

He came back to find the native people rebelling and rioting. Cortes tried to calm the population by
making Moctezuma II stand on top of a temple and talk to the mass. The Aztecs were far too
splenetic to be reasoned with, they started throwing stones and arrows at their former emperor.
Moctezuma II was killed (Palfrey). Moctezuma's heir was a young man by the name of Cuitláhuac.
He ordered the Aztec people to make a full scale attack on the Spaniards. The Spanish decided to
sneak out at night before their opponents had a chance to attack, this night would later be known as
the Sad Night. An alarm was sounded and the Aztecs leaped into action to capture the pale skinned
Invaders. It was a devastating loss for the Spaniards. Hundreds of soldiers were taken prisoner, fell
into canals and drowned, and were slaughtered by the natives. Cortes fell to his knees, and wept
(Palfrey). Very few soldiers had escaped, but the ones able to get away, including Cortes, were not
done with Tenochtitlan just yet. The Spaniards retreated into Tlaxcalan territory and regrouped.
They got reinforcements and trained for months, preparing to launch another attack soon. They
came up with a new strategy. They would take over the surrounding Aztec cities rather than going

Speech About The Aztec Empire
Even though the Aztec Empire is well known, I would not recommend you to move here. The
citizens themselves do take a lot of pride in being Aztecs, but only if you grew up in this civilization
would you feel comfortable with all of the traditions and rituals performed. The Aztec's are known
for the sacrificing of thousands of humans and some may think this is a great ritual, but for someone
wanting to go to a new civilization, this one may be a little too hard core. Not only this, but the way
the Aztec government ruled, was be inflicting fear into their people. The Aztec government is also
power hungry, a lot of their energy is being spent on conquering new territories instead of focusing
on the land they already have. Plus, the land they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The government is in some ways selfish and is focused purely on dominating the surrounding areas.
The people within this civilization really do not think for themselves and when they do, their are
consequences to be given. There is constant fear over what the future holds for the Aztec Empire to
the point where everyone focuses on securing the future without enjoying the present. The people
are constantly making sure their actions won't upset the "natural balance" of things, which must be
exhausting. The government constantly is at war trying to gain more power. There are diseases
taking out citizens left and right and this point is not relevant, but you are not allowed to be drunk in
public unless you are over the age of 70, just a fun fact. The location of this empire isn't especially
amazing, and the land itself isn't superb compared to other civilizations. There are great things about
the Aztec Empire, however, for the majority of the citizens, I would not recommend this kind of
lifestyle to anyone. If I were you, I would stay clear of the Aztec empire and look elsewhere to

The Fall of the Aztec Empire
Abstract:
The Aztec civilization during its peak was the strongest civilization in the western hemisphere.
When the Spaniards first set foot in the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, they could not believe that a
civilization so primitive in their minds could have been so culturally developed and powerful.
However, before making it to Tenochtitlan, they had discovered that all was not well in the Aztec
empire. From many native Indians that had tension with the Aztecs, they learned of internal and pre–
existing problems that existed. This investigation examines to what extent where those internal and
pre–existing factors to blame for the downfall of the Aztec Empire. The investigation was
undertaken using some of the only primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the story of the Aztec defeat and the successful resolution of the Spanish mission against
incredible odds raises many questions. Regardless of more advanced technology and weapons, the
Spanish force was vastly outnumbered and began a military campaign poorly supplied within an
unknown territory against an unknown enemy. This paper explores the possibility that other key
factors were at play, which provided the Spanish with a several of advantages and facilitated the
successful resolution of their campaign. Furthermore, these factors allowed for an incredibly quick
and effective subjugation of millions of people – considering that by comparison it took hundreds of
years to expel the Muslim armies from southern Spain, a war ending in 1492 and in which many
conquistadores fighting in the new world took part of. This paper will argue that internal religious
quarrels, unsustainable tax obligations, and continuing military conflicts weakened the Aztec social
fabric by increasing resentment among subjugated towns and cities and diminishing trust among
Aztec citizens in their highly centralized government. To begin with, it is important to understand
the city states did not outline the division of politics, society, religion, and economy as clearly as
modern day western societies do or even

Compare And Contrast Inca And Aztec Empires
In Mesoamerica and the Andes, two distinct Empires, the Aztecs and Incas, emerged from previous
cultures. Their developments in politics, religion, and in society had some similarities, but differed
as well based on their different geographical locations. To politically gain control of areas in the
Central and South America, the Aztec and Inca Empires had a period of fighting between local
chiefdoms and small states. The developments of sacrificial religions helped develop tribute and
labor empires. Socially, kinship–based institutions emerged into a social hierarchy, creating an
organized state. The political, religious, and the social developments of the Aztec and Inca Empires

Gaining partial control of Lake Texcoco and settling at Tenochtitlan, The
Aztecs began to develop regional politics. Aztec politics were based on military strength with a
slightly decentralized government because of constant expansion, causing less unity within the
Empire. Similarly, the Incas gained their political strength from imperial conquests. The kingdom of
Chimor was locate in the Andean region of South America. A series of military campaigns by Inca
leader, Pachacuti, led to the downfall of the Chimor, allowing the Incas to settle at Lake Titicaca.
Over the next few years, the Inca army was constantly expanding the empire in the region. Unlike
the Aztecs, however, Incan government was more complex and centralized, ultimately creating a
more stable empire. The Incas adopted split inheritance from the Chimor kingdom, which all
political power went to the ruler's successor, except for his
possessions, which went to the male decedent. The military nature of the Aztecs and Incas
developed similar political systems that was motivated to conquer more lands.

Impact Of The Spanish Empires On The Aztecs

Extending along the valley of Mexico, with Tenochtitlan as its capital; the Aztec Empire resided.
The Aztecs had significant wealth from trading and heavy payments of tribute from the conquered
natives. From the years 1200–1520, the Aztecs prospered and expanded their empire immensely.
However, all of this was going to change when the Spanish landed on the Yucatan Peninsula in
1519. Following Christopher Columbus' foundation of permanent settlement in the Caribbean, the
Spanish were seeking conquest, expedition and colonization of new territory. Although there were
multiple factors that contributed to the remarkable victory by the Spanish in the sixteenth century
such as religion; it was the indigenous alliances, technological superiority, and disease that was most
impactful. The Spanish conquistadors were not your typical farmers or craftsmen – they were
soldiers, travelers, and mercenaries in search of wealth. In their quests for fortune and land, they
invaded and enslaved native communities and looted gold, silver, and other treasures that were up
for grabs. The two prosperous conquests were those of the Aztec empire in Mexico by Hernan
Cortes and the Inca empire in Peru by Francisco Pizarro. They both had unpretentious forces that
were far outnumbered by the warriors of the empires they conquered. A vital element of their
success was their progressed weaponry and durable armor. Spanish conquistadors

Compare And Contrast Aztec And Inca Empires
The Aztec and Inca Empires had similarities and differences that contributed to their individual
successes. Each Empire had different origins yet the both grew and became powerful Empires. The
Aztecs, also known as the Mexica, originated in the valley in Mexico and began as nomadic people,
moving from place to place until their powerful neighbors drove them away. Around 1325 A.D. they
came upon a valley in Mexico and settled around the surrounding lakes. The Aztecs built the capital,
Tenochtitlan, on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco, and started to rapidly expand. The Incas
also expanded, originating in 1350 A.D. at the city of Cuzco which is located in modern day Peru.

The Aztec government never consolidated complete leadership over the Empire and instead relied
on a tribute system for payment. The Inca government, however, enforced strict control with harsh
punishments. The Incas also had a labor system, called Mita, that required all taxpayers to work for
a certain period in each year. Each of these systems played major roles in the longevity of the
Empires. Because the Aztecs enforced little control on its
conquered peoples, many of them joined Cortez to fight against the Aztecs, which lead to the Aztecs
decline. The Incan Empire lasted significantly longer due to the control the government had on the
people. The complexity and strict rules of the
Empire made it harder for Pizarro to conquer them.
Unlike the governments of the two Empires, the religions were extremely similar. Both Empires
were polytheistic and worshipped their sun gods above all others. Human sacrifices were common
in both civilizations to appease their various gods and goddesses. Some of these deities included
nature gods and goddesses that were believed to play a role in determining the year's harvest.
Because both kings of these Empires were considered divine, religion was used to unify and gain

new Spanish people. Cortez accepted the gifts of the Aztec people, but in a way laughed as to say is

The City Of The Aztec Empire
When thinking of ancient, urban centers many think of ancient capitals such as Rome, Athens, or
Cairo. However, across the Atlantic Ocean in Central and South America, there were a number of
growing urban centers being built by the Aztec, Mayan, and Incan civilizations. An example of a
Central American urban center is Tenochtitlan. Tenochtitlan was the capital of the ancient Aztec
capital which is located in present–day Mexico–City, Mexico. The development of this ancient city
was dependent on three important factors: favorable ecology, advancing technology, and social
organization. With these three preconditions, the growth of Tenochtitlan as a major urban center and
as the capital of the Aztec's civilization was able to flourish.
Similarly to modern–day real estate, location played a detrimental role in determining whether or
not an urban center could truly develop and flourish. A location with favorable ecology allows for
resources such as agriculture to be produced near or within the city. However, agriculture is not the
only element of ecology that allows for a city to develop. Other ecological elements such as rivers,
lakes, elevation, mineral resource, and building materials are important in determining whether or
not a location has favorable ecology (28). Tenochtitlan is often compared to Europe's Venice due to
its structure and location within the Valley of Mexico. The landscape of the Valley of Mexico
consisted of multiple lakes and "resembled a water–filled

society. Though they provided proper leadership they weren't automatically put in government type

central Mexico. They included the cities of Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan and they dominated
central Mexico and soon Tenochtitlan dominated the Aztec Empire. The Aztecs did not have any

The Aztecs And The Aztec Empire
Mesoamerica was once a place filled with growing, ruthless empires and civilizations, although not
one was like the Aztecs and their empire. Although they started off with a humble beginning, they
quickly grew into a great civilization that dominated present day Central Mexico. They conquered
and expanded into an empire stronger than the other neighboring empires. The heart of the Aztec
empire, Tenochtitlan, was a grand capital filled with many people and astounding temples. The
Aztecs were also ahead of their time with fully–functional government and irrigation systems. They
continue to astound many historians with their diverse way of life. They impacted the way of life for
many people today with their customs and ways of life. Throughout the years, the Aztecs were able
to grow and prosper with their sufficient supply of agriculture and blessed fertile lands of the
Mexican Valley, and demonstrated to be an important part of Mexican heritage. Because of their
history, unique culture, and beautiful architecture, the Aztec Civilization truly is one of
Mesoamerica's most influential early empires.
The Aztec Empire has the history of a fast–growing empire destined to dominate Mesoamerica's
empires. Although their exact origins are unclear, experts believe the Aztecs evolved from a tribe of

The Aztecs used two calendars to calculate time. "Since gods ruled specific periods of time, it was
important to know which gods controlled the day. During the time they ruled, offerings were made
to them." (World History Patterns of Interaction) It was extremely important to the Aztecs to offer to
the gods at the right time, so they created a 260 day religious calendar. The second calendar that the
Aztecs created was a 365 day solar calendar to keep track of the days. Once and every 52 years both
cycles started on the same day. The Aztecs also created a sun stone at Tenochtitlan, the capital of the
Aztec's empire. The Aztec calendar stone was 13 feet in diameter and weighs around 24 tons. In the
center of the sun stone is a picture of the sun god. He is surrounded by symbols of movements and
four words: Tiger, Water, Wind and Rain of Fire. There were 20 panels representing the 20 days that
make up each of the 18 months of the Mesoamerican year. The Mesoamerican year was made up of
360 days and 5 more days that were seen as unlucky days. The Aztecs also used a valuable trade

intermarriages, and the local chiefs being forced to live in Mayapan as hostages (Meyer 48). There
was a lot of cruelty and war within the previous living conditions and as a result these resilient
people went back to their roots relying on their knowledge of cultivation, family connection and
strong community life. These are the things, in my opinion, that gave them the strength to move on
and to find peace in their lives. Their ability to be extraordinary in all they accomplished in the unity

At the time the Spaniards first arrived in Mexico, Aztec civilization was thriving. They controlled a
broad empire that stretched from central Mexico to the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and into Oaxaca
in the south. The population at the time was between 5 million and 15 million people. Tenochitlán,
the capital of the Aztec empire, had a population of between 200,000 and 400,000 people. The
Aztecs established their rule on military conquest and on tributes gained from the people they
conquered. Tributes could be paid in the form of gold, cotton, jade, cacao beans, maize, and other
products. The Aztecs responded viciously to local rulers who did not pay tribute or resisted it. They

The emperor was the most powerful. He had absolute power. The Aztec Noble class consisted of
military leaders, government officials, and priests. Military leaders held tremendous power in Aztec
society at the peak of the Aztec empire. A lot of nobles owned huge estates in which they presided
over like lords. Nobles lived lives of luxury and of great wealth. The commoner class consisted of
soldiers, artisans, merchants, and farmers who owned their own land. Merchants formed an
exclusive group in which they would travel far away to act as a spy for the emperor. In turn they
gained a lot of wealth. Enslaved people were kept captive and usually did various different jobs.
As in most ancient societies, religion played a big role in Aztec society when the Spaniards first
arrived in Mexico. Tenochitlán had hundreds of temples and religious buildings devoted to 1000
gods. Their religious practices revolved around lavish ceremonies to communicate and appease the
gods. Their most important ritual was offering human sacrifices for the god Huitziolopochiti, the sun
god. They believed that when the sun set he had to fight the forces of evil to get to the next day. He

Who were the Aztecs? Why were they considered to be an empire even greater than the Romans?
And how was Hernan Cortes able to defeat them? These are some of the questions that people ask
about these indigenous people. These people are known as the Aztecs but originally called
themselves Mexica. They came to Mexico in the early thirteenth century and from there they started
to develop a social structure and government consisting of priests, kings, peasants, and soldiers.
Besides having a very organized society the Aztecs had a very large and intimidating army
consisting of full time soldiers and peasants. By 1427 A.D. the Aztec empire became the dominant

They had cannons to bring down the Aztec homes and temples, they had swords that easily cut
through Aztec spears, but what I think gave the Spaniards such a great advantage was the armor they
wore and the horses they rode on. The reason being that wearing armor would make killing the
Spaniards that much harder and being mounted on a horse only made them more intimidating in the
eyes of the Aztecs as well as giving them the fighting advantage.
The second reason that the Aztecs fell to the Spaniards is just as important as the first and it's the
Indian tribes that assisted the Spaniards in finding and defeating the Aztecs. Although there were a
few Indian tribes that became allies and assisted the Spaniards it was the Cempoala Indian tribe that
helped them set up a base on a shore of a village that Cortes named Vera Cruz when he claimed it in
the name of Spain. It was at this base that supplies could come in with less danger to the Spaniards
and also it was the same shore where Cortes burned his ships in order to keep his men from
retreating to Cuba. Besides the Cempoala tribe the Tlaxcalans after being defeated by the Spaniards
gave food, water, translators, and gifts to Cortes and his men as well as one thousand Indians when
the battle against the Aztecs began. The reason for the Tlaxcalans and the rest of the Indian tribes

Tradition: To emphasize on the influence of the Aztecs traditions in to Mexican culture is the gender
roles. In the book, Mexico an illustrated History it explains, "Men were expected to be unflinching
in the face of danger, and able to withstand pain. Women were expected to be modest and
unassertive, their world restricted to the household. Children were cherished, but taught to respect
discipline and the authority of elders." The Mexican culture still follows these traditions. Just like
the Aztecs, in the Mexican culture men were raise to be machos. Men are usually the head of the

The Aztecs And The Aztec Empire
Mesoamerica was once a place filled with expanding, ruthless empires and civilizations, although
none was like the Aztecs and their empire.
The Aztec
civilization was truly one of Mesoamerica's most influential empires because of their history, vibrant
culture, and unique architecture.
The Aztec Empire has the history of a fast–growing empire destined to dominate Mesoamerica's
empires. Although their exact origins are unclear, experts believe the Aztecs evolved from a tribe of
nomadic hunters (History 1). They conquered nearly all of Mesoamerica, creating an empire
stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean and south to present day Guatemala
(Mcdowell 726).

Indians were induced to accept Spanish rule" (41). The Indians eventually returned to their homes,

of trying to meet with the Aztec Emperor, Montezuma II, Cortes decided to march to Tenochtitlan.
Cortes gathered several hundred men and began his journey to the Aztec Capital. On the way, Cortes

destination of Tenochtitlan on November 8, 1519 and was greeted by Montezuma. The Aztec
Emperor gave Cortes and his men gifts, because he thought this would stop Cortes from trying to

Inca And Aztec Empires Similarities
The Aztec and Incan religions were similar and different in many ways. For one, both empires and
their religions consisted of polytheistic values. Both empires participated in human sacrifice. Both
empires worshipped a sun god or deity. Both empires used religion to unify societies and access
authority over citizens. Both kings of these empires were considered angelic. Both religions
believed in gods and sacrifice. A very important role in the religion of these empires was agriculture.
Both, the Aztec and Incan empires, believed in many gods. They believed that without the gods,
their crops would wither, and soon die.
The Aztec religion believed that several worlds existed before the world that we live in today. The
called this series of world the "Four Suns", and believe that the one that we currently live is
considered to be the fifth sun. The Aztecs believe that 2 beings were the basis for all actuality and
existence. One consisted of how the gods originated. One god was Ometecuhtli, who was

Global Expansion And The Conquest Of The Aztec Empire
Global expansion has been a large topic covered by historians for hundreds of years. The
development of independent countries establishing trade, business, and military powers had led to
the development and advancement of all the continents. The purpose of exploration, conquest and
governmental power are common themes that are shared among the powers of 16th century Europe.
With unexplored land and unknown inhabitants, the desire and race for expansion were a primary
purpose of European nations. Inhabitants of these new lands had established cultures, religions, and
social lives. Little documentation is to be found on native people of the North American continent,
the majority had no written language or were completely illiterate. Any written records kept were
kept in the writings of the victors. Understanding expansionism and conquest can be told differently
by many different scholars. Their evaluations can be one–sided as there is no other story upon
documentation that can be evaluated. Hernándo Cortes and the Conquest of the Aztec Empire was to
be evaluated as the ruthless, war monger who sought power and control and treasure in the name of
the King of Spain. Cortés would invade a new piece of land inhabited by cultures of Indians to seize
fame and fortune. His military efforts along with the help of other native tribal allies destroyed an
Empire of the largest capacity. Reasoning and purpose for the invasion can only be told as a

The Ottoman And The Aztec Empire
Comparative Essay The post–classical era in history (600CE– 1250CE) saw the rise and fall of
many great empires. In the early part of the era, the Islamic Caliphates acted as a core region in the
Middle East, heavily influencing the region around them. On the other side of the world, the Aztec
Empire rose to power in the later part of the era with minimal trans–regional influence. Although on
different sides of the world, both empires found similar ways to adapt to their diverse environments.
In the post–classical era, the rise of the Islamic Caliphates and the Aztec Empire were similar in that
they established cohesion through their respective cultures and used military conquest to come to
power. Although there are similarities in the rise of power in the Caliphates and the Aztec Empire,
there is a difference in the speed of expansion given that the Caliphates were located in a central
trading region while the Aztec Empire was not.
Both the Caliphates and the Aztec Empire show a similarity in how each used their cultures to
achieve cohesion among their respective empires. In the Caliphates, Islamic culture helped unite the
population while Aztec ritualistic culture unified the ethnically diverse peoples of the Aztec Empire.
Islamic culture unified much of the region under Umayyad and Abbasid rule. As Islamic merchants

When the messengers' returned, they reported to Motechuhzoma all that the Spanish had. From their

have realized the threat to his land, and would start to prepare for an attack or defense.
Motechuhzoma's response was not that at all. "He sent for magicians and warlock's in the hope that
they could harm the Spaniards" (32). This clearly shows that the king is not in control, but rather
confused and scared. At this point it seems obvious that this was a threat. The messenger reported

hearing all that, Motechuhzoma refused to rule out the idea that they where gods. He sent prisoners
from war to be "sacrificed before the Spanish because he believed these gods would want to drink

Of course, there must have been some detriments, but they used their swampy lands as an advantage

Gaining partial control of Lake Texcoco and settling at Tenochtitlan, The
Aztecs began to develop regional politics. Aztec politics were based on military strength with a
slightly decentralized government because of constant expansion, causing less unity within the

Slavery was also common in the Aztec empire, and children would occasionally be traded for a

Another important feature of the Aztec empire is their religious practices, and the way they
attributed some functions of nature or natural phenomenons to their deities. The Aztecs practiced a
polytheistic religion. They believed in a multitude of gods and goddesses, whose main functions
were to provide resources such as water, fire, wind, and fertile land to the people. One of the main
gods of the Aztec pantheon is Quetzalcoatl which translates to "feathered serpent." The Aztecs
attributed the creation of the human world and the wind element to this god. Strong winds and
tornadoes were believed to be related to Quetzalcoatl in the Aztec culture. Another main god of the
Aztec pantheon was Tlaloc, and he was known as the giver of water and fertile land. The Aztecs
attributed the rains and hurricanes that occurred during their lifetime to Tlaloc. Fire, rocks, and

Essay On The Fall Of The Aztec Empire

  • 1. Essay On The Fall Of The Aztec Empire Often times people forget just how significant the fall of the Aztec empire is to our current culture. If the Spanish never invaded the Aztec's there are a number of things that would be different today such as Christianity might not have been spread because the Aztec's believed in serving many Gods as well as effects such as the expansion of Mexico or the non–existence of the Alamo. It is easy for people to analyze the culture we live in but they frequently neglect how it became this way. The cultural encounter of Spanish invading the Aztecs in the 1500's was critical to world historic paths because they helped guide the Spanish to colonize the Americas as well as the creation of Mexico all caused by a number of factors such as religion, disease and War strategy. Around the 1500's a Spanish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Warfare tactics, disease, and religion all let to the fall of the Aztec Empire, but the great fall of this kingdom led to influential products. Out of each one of the factors that contributed to the collapse came an enlightenment of new and more westernized civilization. The success of their Spaniard's conquest led to the establishment of the Americas and Mexico. It cultivated modern day Mexico's traditions as well as the Spanish language. It spread the belief of monotheism Christianity that would be prominent in the Americas. The new colonies were more developed and advanced than when the Aztecs ruled. In many ways, the Spanish helped the Aztec's prosper, not all of the Aztec traditions were demolished but could be better spread and adapted now that the Spanish were in charge. Most importantly the Spanish helped lay down a firm foundation for customs to be interchanged and enhanced. The cultural encounter of the Spanish invading the Aztecs was instrumental to the growth and progress of the society we live in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Tenochtitl Capital Of The Aztec Empire Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Aztec empire. It was one of the largest cities in the world in 1521. It evolved from a small settlement on an island in the western marshes of Lake Texcoco, into the mighty political, economic and religious center of the largest empire in Pre Columbian Mexico in less than 200 years. Tenochtitlan was a city of great wealth at the time. Most construction of Tenochtitlan took place during the reigns of four Aztec kings beginning in the 1470s. The ruins of the once great Aztec city are still visible today a thousand years later. Canals and rivers ran throughout the city and canoes were used to transport people and goods throughout the city. There were also 2 aqueducts that supplied the city with fresh water. ... • 9. Father Diego Dur An Advocate For The Aztecs Of The Aztec... Father Diego Durán was a Dominican priest in Mexico after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. He was born in Selville, Spain in 1537 but moved to New Spain as a child. He originally lived in Texcoco but eventually moved to Mexico City and became a priest in 1556. He became fluent in the native language Nahuatl and gained the inhabitants' trust with his understanding nature and respect for their culture. He used his experiences and access to first hand knowledge to write three books, The Ancient Calendar, The History of the Indies of New Spain, and The Book of Gods and Rites, collectively known as the Durán Codex. Durán was an advocate for the Aztecs living in New Spain, but he was still a Catholic priest who saw everything he did through the lense of potential conversion. During his extensive study of the local culture he came to see the parallels between his faith and indigenous religion as evidence of Abrahamic religion having been brought to the New World and corrupted by the Devil. The only way, according to Durán, to truly root out the satanic practices of the Mesoamerican religions was to understand them. He wrote the Durán Codex to both help that missionary work and satisfy his own curiosity. The Book of Gods and Rites was written from 1574 to 1576. Fifty years before that, Hernan Cortez had taken over the Aztec Empire and toppled it's capital city Tenochtitlan. After the Spanish took over most of South and Mesoamerica, the remaining people who hadn't been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Aztec Empire We are the Mexica, but are now known as the Aztec. We are the indigenous people of the Valley of Mexico, rulers of the Aztec empire. We were strong and dominant and worked as mercenary soldier; hired professional militias who fought for other groups. We use to live in Aztlan before we made our journey and founded our new home Tenochtitlan. The legend of finding our territory starts from an order we received from a vision from our central deity, Huitzilopochtli. Huitzilopochtli (hummingbird of the left or of the south) was the Sun and War god. We were instructed to leave our home and depart on an expedition to find the promise land. Our god spoke prophecy to us and told us about his vision. He told us when we saw an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a snake that we would reach our new home, the place we would build our powerful empire. After a centuries voyage, in 1325, we reached the Lake of Texcoco, in the middle of it there was an island and on this island low and behold Huitzilopochtli prophecy that was spoken over us was fulfilled. There was an eagle on a cactus eating a snake. We had finally reached our promise land where we ended our vigorous pilgrimage and found our resting place and home of our new dominant kingdom. We called it Tenochtitlan, place of the prickly pear. Tenochtitlan ultimately was an island, inside the walls of our city it was crisscrossed with canals dividing the city into four cardinal directions. We set it up along gridline and ... • 17. Empire: Government In The Aztec Empire Government in the Aztec Empire: The Aztec Empire was not an 'empire' in the classic sense of the word. They did not dictate every aspect of life for the conquered city states. In most cases, conquered cities were allowed to keep their original rulers and ways of life. This was usually a form of monarchy or dictatorship where there was a king who ruled over the city with a structure of government officials below them. The only thing required of the city states by the empire was a form of tribute. This varied from location to location. Thus, the real structure of the empire was held up with a tribute system payed to the heads of the members of the Triple Alliance. • 21. The World Of The Aztec Empire How was Cortes with 508 soldiers able to conquer the Aztec Empire with millions of peoples inside its borders? Cortes was able to conquer the Aztec people for several different reasons. The Aztecs had a very harsh tribute system that was not popular among the other peoples of Mexico. This ferocious tribute system allowed Cortes to act as a "liberator" of some sort. Additionally, with the Spanish came several diseases the Aztec peoples had never encountered. The spread of diseases such as small pox and many others drastically reduced the Aztec population and sped up Cortes' cause. Malintzin, a tribal girl given as a gift to Cortes, was helpful in translating local dialects and communicating amongst Amerindians. Also an important aspect of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the majority of those who were sacrificed were war captives who opposed the Aztecs, they obviously greatly feared the brutal tribute system. However not only war captives were sacrifices, common adults and children were also sacrificed at times. Cortes himself was disgusted at the thought of human sacrifice, this allowed him to gain Indian allies as well as gain respect among Mexican tribes that feared and opposed the Aztecs. The majority of the population feared the process therefore making Cortes, whom despised the process, an appealing alternative. Many followed Cortes as they shared the same views on the 'human sacrifice ' topic. Because Cortes posed to eliminate the Aztecs it allowed him to appear as a liberator of the tyranny of the Aztec rule. Secondly, a relatively minor cause for Cortes ' success was the issue of disease among the Aztecs. Although this was a fairly feeble reason it actually greatly benefited the Spanish in reducing the Aztec population. The Spanish brought smallpox to Mexico, said to be linked to an infected slave arriving from Spanish Cuba, which caused great suffering to the Aztecs. The Spanish were immune to the disease so it posed no threat to Cortes ' own men. The Aztecs were demoralized by the mysterious illness that killed Indians and spared Spaniards, as if advertising the Spaniards ' invincibility. One negative aspect for Cortes however was that his Indian allies suffered from the disease ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This empire had built magnificent temples, was plentiful with gold and silver, and was brought to its knees by the Spaniards. The Aztecs. This mysterious, unworldly nation was destroyed in less than a month's time. The Spaniards, who erased hundreds of years of history and culture, were honored and held in high regard, but at a price. The destruction and carnage that the Spaniards left across the once majestic empire, was the heinous crime of genocide. The Aztecs reigned from the twelfth century to the fifteenth century. He came back to find the native people rebelling and rioting. Cortes tried to calm the population by making Moctezuma II stand on top of a temple and talk to the mass. The Aztecs were far too splenetic to be reasoned with, they started throwing stones and arrows at their former emperor. Moctezuma II was killed (Palfrey). Moctezuma's heir was a young man by the name of Cuitláhuac. He ordered the Aztec people to make a full scale attack on the Spaniards. The Spanish decided to sneak out at night before their opponents had a chance to attack, this night would later be known as the Sad Night. An alarm was sounded and the Aztecs leaped into action to capture the pale skinned Invaders. It was a devastating loss for the Spaniards. Hundreds of soldiers were taken prisoner, fell into canals and drowned, and were slaughtered by the natives. Cortes fell to his knees, and wept (Palfrey). Very few soldiers had escaped, but the ones able to get away, including Cortes, were not done with Tenochtitlan just yet. The Spaniards retreated into Tlaxcalan territory and regrouped. They got reinforcements and trained for months, preparing to launch another attack soon. They came up with a new strategy. They would take over the surrounding Aztec cities rather than going straight for the capital. They were successful in this approach ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Speech About The Aztec Empire Even though the Aztec Empire is well known, I would not recommend you to move here. The citizens themselves do take a lot of pride in being Aztecs, but only if you grew up in this civilization would you feel comfortable with all of the traditions and rituals performed. The Aztec's are known for the sacrificing of thousands of humans and some may think this is a great ritual, but for someone wanting to go to a new civilization, this one may be a little too hard core. Not only this, but the way the Aztec government ruled, was be inflicting fear into their people. The Aztec government is also power hungry, a lot of their energy is being spent on conquering new territories instead of focusing on the land they already have. Plus, the land they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The government is in some ways selfish and is focused purely on dominating the surrounding areas. The people within this civilization really do not think for themselves and when they do, their are consequences to be given. There is constant fear over what the future holds for the Aztec Empire to the point where everyone focuses on securing the future without enjoying the present. The people are constantly making sure their actions won't upset the "natural balance" of things, which must be exhausting. The government constantly is at war trying to gain more power. There are diseases taking out citizens left and right and this point is not relevant, but you are not allowed to be drunk in public unless you are over the age of 70, just a fun fact. The location of this empire isn't especially amazing, and the land itself isn't superb compared to other civilizations. There are great things about the Aztec Empire, however, for the majority of the citizens, I would not recommend this kind of lifestyle to anyone. • 33. The Fall of the Aztec Empire Abstract: The Aztec civilization during its peak was the strongest civilization in the western hemisphere. When the Spaniards first set foot in the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, they could not believe that a civilization so primitive in their minds could have been so culturally developed and powerful. However, before making it to Tenochtitlan, they had discovered that all was not well in the Aztec empire. From many native Indians that had tension with the Aztecs, they learned of internal and pre– existing problems that existed. This investigation examines to what extent where those internal and pre–existing factors to blame for the downfall of the Aztec Empire. The investigation was undertaken using some of the only primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the story of the Aztec defeat and the successful resolution of the Spanish mission against incredible odds raises many questions. Regardless of more advanced technology and weapons, the Spanish force was vastly outnumbered and began a military campaign poorly supplied within an unknown territory against an unknown enemy. This paper explores the possibility that other key factors were at play, which provided the Spanish with a several of advantages and facilitated the successful resolution of their campaign. Furthermore, these factors allowed for an incredibly quick and effective subjugation of millions of people – considering that by comparison it took hundreds of years to expel the Muslim armies from southern Spain, a war ending in 1492 and in which many conquistadores fighting in the new world took part of. This paper will argue that internal religious quarrels, unsustainable tax obligations, and continuing military conflicts weakened the Aztec social fabric by increasing resentment among subjugated towns and cities and diminishing trust among Aztec citizens in their highly centralized government. To begin with, it is important to understand the city states did not outline the division of politics, society, religion, and economy as clearly as modern day western societies do or even ... However, we always put up a fight until the very end. Follow along with me, as I walk you through my memoir of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Their developments in politics, religion, and in society had some similarities, but differed as well based on their different geographical locations. To politically gain control of areas in the Central and South America, the Aztec and Inca Empires had a period of fighting between local chiefdoms and small states. The developments of sacrificial religions helped develop tribute and labor empires. Socially, kinship–based institutions emerged into a social hierarchy, creating an organized state. Similarly, the Incas gained their political strength from imperial conquests. The kingdom of Chimor was locate in the Andean region of South America. A series of military campaigns by Inca leader, Pachacuti, led to the downfall of the Chimor, allowing the Incas to settle at Lake Titicaca. Over the next few years, the Inca army was constantly expanding the empire in the region. Unlike the Aztecs, however, Incan government was more complex and centralized, ultimately creating a more stable empire. The Incas adopted split inheritance from the Chimor kingdom, which all political power went to the ruler's successor, except for his possessions, which went to the male decedent. • 45. Impact Of The Spanish Empires On The Aztecs Aliki Daviotis Paper #2 December 2nd, 2017 Extending along the valley of Mexico, with Tenochtitlan as its capital; the Aztec Empire resided. The Aztecs had significant wealth from trading and heavy payments of tribute from the conquered natives. From the years 1200–1520, the Aztecs prospered and expanded their empire immensely. However, all of this was going to change when the Spanish landed on the Yucatan Peninsula in 1519. Following Christopher Columbus' foundation of permanent settlement in the Caribbean, the Spanish were seeking conquest, expedition and colonization of new territory. Although there were multiple factors that contributed to the remarkable victory by the Spanish in the sixteenth century such as religion; it was the indigenous alliances, technological superiority, and disease that was most impactful. The Spanish conquistadors were not your typical farmers or craftsmen – they were soldiers, travelers, and mercenaries in search of wealth. In their quests for fortune and land, they invaded and enslaved native communities and looted gold, silver, and other treasures that were up for grabs. The two prosperous conquests were those of the Aztec empire in Mexico by Hernan Cortes and the Inca empire in Peru by Francisco Pizarro. They both had unpretentious forces that were far outnumbered by the warriors of the empires they conquered. A vital element of their success was their progressed weaponry and durable armor. Each Empire had different origins yet the both grew and became powerful Empires. The Aztecs, also known as the Mexica, originated in the valley in Mexico and began as nomadic people, moving from place to place until their powerful neighbors drove them away. Around 1325 A.D. they came upon a valley in Mexico and settled around the surrounding lakes. The Aztecs built the capital, Tenochtitlan, on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco, and started to rapidly expand. The Incas also expanded, originating in 1350 A.D. at the city of Cuzco which is located in modern day Peru. When the Inca conquest was over, the Empire spread almost 3,000 ... The Inca government, however, enforced strict control with harsh punishments. The Incas also had a labor system, called Mita, that required all taxpayers to work for a certain period in each year. Each of these systems played major roles in the longevity of the Empires. Because the Aztecs enforced little control on its conquered peoples, many of them joined Cortez to fight against the Aztecs, which lead to the Aztecs decline. The Incan Empire lasted significantly longer due to the control the government had on the people. The complexity and strict rules of the Empire made it harder for Pizarro to conquer them. Unlike the governments of the two Empires, the religions were extremely similar. Both Empires were polytheistic and worshipped their sun gods above all others. Human sacrifices were common in both civilizations to appease their various gods and goddesses. Some of these deities included nature gods and goddesses that were believed to play a role in determining the year's harvest. Through further investigation of the fall of the Aztec Empire, I was able to get a better understanding to how it all happened. It all started with the arrival of Hernan Cortez and his army of men in 1519. The great Aztec leader of Montezuma sent a messenger with gifts to warmly greet the new Spanish people. Cortez accepted the gifts of the Aztec people, but in a way laughed as to say is this all? Cortez and his men then demonstrated the brute force of their cavalry, horses and cannons. • 61. The City Of The Aztec Empire When thinking of ancient, urban centers many think of ancient capitals such as Rome, Athens, or Cairo. However, across the Atlantic Ocean in Central and South America, there were a number of growing urban centers being built by the Aztec, Mayan, and Incan civilizations. An example of a Central American urban center is Tenochtitlan. Tenochtitlan was the capital of the ancient Aztec capital which is located in present–day Mexico–City, Mexico. The development of this ancient city was dependent on three important factors: favorable ecology, advancing technology, and social organization. With these three preconditions, the growth of Tenochtitlan as a major urban center and as the capital of the Aztec's civilization was able to flourish. Similarly to modern–day real estate, location played a detrimental role in determining whether or not an urban center could truly develop and flourish. A location with favorable ecology allows for resources such as agriculture to be produced near or within the city. However, agriculture is not the only element of ecology that allows for a city to develop. Other ecological elements such as rivers, lakes, elevation, mineral resource, and building materials are important in determining whether or not a location has favorable ecology (28). Tenochtitlan is often compared to Europe's Venice due to its structure and location within the Valley of Mexico. They had cannons to bring down the Aztec homes and temples, they had swords that easily cut through Aztec spears, but what I think gave the Spaniards such a great advantage was the armor they wore and the horses they rode on. The reason being that wearing armor would make killing the Spaniards that much harder and being mounted on a horse only made them more intimidating in the eyes of the Aztecs as well as giving them the fighting advantage. The second reason that the Aztecs fell to the Spaniards is just as important as the first and it's the Indian tribes that assisted the Spaniards in finding and defeating the Aztecs. Although there were a few Indian tribes that became allies and assisted the Spaniards it was the Cempoala Indian tribe that helped them set up a base on a shore of a village that Cortes named Vera Cruz when he claimed it in the name of Spain. • 117. Global Expansion And The Conquest Of The Aztec Empire Global expansion has been a large topic covered by historians for hundreds of years. The development of independent countries establishing trade, business, and military powers had led to the development and advancement of all the continents. The purpose of exploration, conquest and governmental power are common themes that are shared among the powers of 16th century Europe. With unexplored land and unknown inhabitants, the desire and race for expansion were a primary purpose of European nations. Inhabitants of these new lands had established cultures, religions, and social lives. Little documentation is to be found on native people of the North American continent, the majority had no written language or were completely illiterate. Any written records kept were kept in the writings of the victors. Understanding expansionism and conquest can be told differently by many different scholars. Their evaluations can be one–sided as there is no other story upon documentation that can be evaluated. Hernándo Cortes and the Conquest of the Aztec Empire was to be evaluated as the ruthless, war monger who sought power and control and treasure in the name of the King of Spain. Cortés would invade a new piece of land inhabited by cultures of Indians to seize fame and fortune. His military efforts along with the help of other native tribal allies destroyed an Empire of the largest capacity. • 129. The Ottoman And The Aztec Empire Comparative Essay The post–classical era in history (600CE– 1250CE) saw the rise and fall of many great empires. In the early part of the era, the Islamic Caliphates acted as a core region in the Middle East, heavily influencing the region around them. On the other side of the world, the Aztec Empire rose to power in the later part of the era with minimal trans–regional influence. Although on different sides of the world, both empires found similar ways to adapt to their diverse environments. In the post–classical era, the rise of the Islamic Caliphates and the Aztec Empire were similar in that they established cohesion through their respective cultures and used military conquest to come to power. Although there are similarities in the rise of power in the Caliphates and the Aztec Empire, there is a difference in the speed of expansion given that the Caliphates were located in a central trading region while the Aztec Empire was not. Both the Caliphates and the Aztec Empire show a similarity in how each used their cultures to achieve cohesion among their respective empires. In the Caliphates, Islamic culture helped unite the population while Aztec ritualistic culture unified the ethnically diverse peoples of the Aztec Empire. Islamic culture unified much of the region under Umayyad and Abbasid rule. As Islamic merchants and missionaries spread Islam to the people, forms of Islamic culture spread with them. Portilla describes in–depth many different reasons why the Spanish were successful in the defeat of such a strong Empire. He immediately sent gifts of ancient treasures and gold to the Spanish. The Spanish especially took a liking to the gold that was brought to them, and would later take much more on their conquest. When the messengers' returned, they reported to Motechuhzoma all that the Spanish had. From their appearance, to the food they ate, to their impressive weapons. At this point a good leader would have realized the threat to his land, and would start to prepare for an attack or defense. Motechuhzoma's response was not that at all. "He sent for magicians and warlock's in the hope that they could harm the Spaniards" (32). This clearly shows that the king is not in control, but rather confused and scared. At this point it seems obvious that this was a threat. The messenger reported back to the king and spoke of the power of the Spanish, along with all of the weapons. Even after hearing all that, Motechuhzoma refused to rule out the idea that they where gods. He sent prisoners from war to be "sacrificed before the Spanish because he believed these gods would want to drink their blood" (33). Obviously this disgusted the Spanish, but more importantly it built a case for Motechuhzoma to believe these people weren't gods. If he believed in his religion that the gods wanted human sacrifice, and these strangers were disgusted by it, it should have been clear that they weren't gods. The Mayan Empire developed in southeastern Mexico, surrounding the Yucatan Peninsula and Sierra Madre mountains. Similar to the Mayan Empire, the Aztec Empire also developed in Mexico. They spoke their the Nahuatl language, while the Mayans spoke Hieroglyphics (no exact name). Two civilizations both used terrace farming and human labor for agriculture. Wars between towns, cities, and empires did cause two empires to fall, but Mayan Empire mostly fell because of rulers forcing farmers to farm for them, unlike the Aztecs. Of course, there must have been some detriments, but they used their swampy lands as an advantage in agriculture! Also, two empires used human labor when they were farming. As we learned, Aztecs transported food and farmed using humans, same with the Mayans. Plus, they used "terrace farming" as their technique. Terrace farming, aka "terracing", is a type of farming using steps of a mountain or a hill. Believe it or not, they also had similarities with the fall of them.
