Examples Of Art Critique
I chose to critique a painting that I saw when I went to the Fine Arts Center here in Tullahoma. The
Fine Arts Center host many different exhibits in a year, but the recent one is The Watercolor
Society's one hundred forty ninth Traveling Exhibit. The Tullahoma Fine Arts center used to be the
house of The Baillet Sisters. Supposedly the women still walk around, and open doors. On the
upstairs wall there are two paintings of each of the sisters.
The painting is called "Guitar Hero" and it was created by W. Michael Bush, an artist that was born
in Indiana, but resides in Bell Buckle. "Guitar Hero" is a painting that centralizes a musician and
surrounds him with a crowd at his feet. It includes a combination of warm and cool colors mostly

It relates to me because I am definitely not creative enough to go where those amazingly creative
people have gone. I do not have the talent to even be creative or musically talented. This piece
symbolizes to me that musicians are adored and paid millions of dollars but it is too much. There are
musicians and artists who never achieve that fame or fortune and they are the same. It also shows
that music and art are one in the same. People are often put in a pedestal in both walks of life and
they are using their creative talents to express their feelings and try and get others to enjoy their
works, or just make it big and make tons of money. I think this work of art is valuable because there
are so many levels to it. It is not just a painting. It really shows the separation between regular
people and celebrities. It can be said though that this piece lacks use of principles of design. There a
lot of abstract elements to this piece and it could have used more line to separate and clear the image
up instead of leaving it jumbled. "Guitar Hero" by W. Michael Bush leaves a lasting impression in
my head that cannot be done by any ordinary

Essay On Affandi
Affandi is one of the maestros of painting in Indonesia. He is one of the legendary painters who
possessed expressionism in his painting. Instead of depicting an objective reality, expressionism
highlights the subjective emotions and responses which the objects and events raise within a person
(Kleiner 727). Affandi creates a work of art by implementing a realistic technique which directly
influenced by his surrounding environment. One of his famous paintings was entitled as Potret Diri
Menghisap Pipa. An oil on canvas painting sized 125cm x 99 cm created in 1997. The piece is
composed of horizontal dimension with a simple visualization. This painting will be reviewed based

An extensive message was contended into it. Regarding to the identification of object's similarity,
the face, sun, and pipe act as the icons of the piece. Even tough, it is not realist but the old man's
face seems to be similar as the appearance Affandi's face, and so do red circle and the sun. In terms
of metamorphic, the sun is the most influential icon which possibly represents the star that is the
central body of a solar system which acquires its own light and possessed as the main source of
living. The sun is captured in a circle shape which added with the radiating lines. Thus, the
visualization of the sun is radial which stimulates the viewer to focus on one point and suggests that
an explosion is about to come suddenly. The face in this piece is closely associated with Affandi's
face, with a forehead, messy hair, thin, whiskered, and pointed cheek's bone. The appearance is
identical to the figure of Affandi whom is well known with his explosive character, highly
courageous, and expressive. The lines, shapes, and colour are organized neatly in a compact
package. At the pipe, scratched the diagonal line which tends to be flat, represents a calmness or
serenity. Meanwhile, the messy lines represent a temper and dynamic

If you are a businessman, a stock broker, a salesman, or an entrepreneur then you're probably
strongly motivated by money. Many factors motivate an artist to create. It could be emotion,
religion, to commemorate history, or to give us a new perception on things. According to Mark
Getlein, he describes Living with Art as "making art live by letting it engage our attention, our
imagination, and our intelligence. (3)" If I were an artist I would be a painter, and I would paint
images to give tangible form to feelings and ideas. If I were an artist I would try to show what I see
and feel. So, I would show how beautiful and ugly this world could be. I would do this by using a
variety of colors. Color has an emotional effect on us. Cool colors, ... Show more content on

good examples of the role of giving a tangible form to ideas and feelings. These pieces of art may
give the impression of very little taking place in the image but the artwork has a greater meaning
behind it. In Jacob Lawrence piece, it looks so simple but he was telling the story of thousands of
African–Americans migrating from the South to the North (161). In Raphael piece, he captures the
ideals of the Renaissance period. If I was an artist I want to show the ideas of this time. These works

Janice Kindred In Town Gallery Analysis
Chattanooga's "In Town Gallery" was founded in 1974, and it is home to the workings of local
artists. Upon visiting this gallery, I was able to have the unique advantage of conversing with one of
the artists themselves, Janice Kindred. I was able to grasp an understanding of the different medias
and techniques used in the paintings and other artworks. In addition, I was able to develop an
appreciation of the artists' works.
The first piece that struck my eye was Vincent, a painting by Janice Kindred herself. Vincent is a
painting done in acrylic. It is a colorful and vivid arrangement of a nature scene featuring trees
standing upon a cliff that foray one's attention. Upon looking at this painting, the sky fascinated me
the most. It was portrayed in bright blues, pinks, and purples. When talking to Kindred, she
informed me that in her paintings, she likes to do a layering ... Show more content on

Washburn founded the MMIA (Mixed Media Inspired Artists) and has been accredited to teaching
numerous mixed media classes through the Southeast. In Radiant Earth, one sees a vivid portrayal
of what seems to be an African savanna with a rolling grassland of shrubs and trees overlooking
water. This painting was one of the most flamboyant ones I saw. It grabbed my attention with its pop
of many colors. What also stood out to me was the layering technique similar to Kindred's.
Lastly, I saw Chuck Frye's Snowy Day in the Cove. Different from the other paintings, this was
done with oil. Like Frye's other works, Snowy Day in the Cove, focuses on realism. Frye enjoys
capturing the natural harmony found within landscapes. In this painting, one sees I a desolate cabin
in a snowy atmosphere. Snow aligns the surrounded forest and the cabin. Snowflakes glisten in the
air. Looking at this painting, I thought it was a photograph. However, I was surprised to learn it was
actually a painting. The realism of this painting fascinated

Hunt Symbolism
While I love the painting itself for the design elements, Hunt was never one to leave a colorful
painting unsymbolic. Whereas some people may individually explain the symbolic meaning of each
pieces of the painting, I rather look at the painting as a whole while also keeping in mind that Hunt
painted this painting over a course of six years. At a closer look, the painting appears to depict the
evolution of Britain over the six years; there are depictions of farmer land and factories; and
sailboats and steamboats. These illustrations represent Britain's Industrial Revolution, which
happened between the 18th and 19th century. Britain, before the revolution, mainly utilized farmers
and human labor to craft goods and materials for export, they ... Show more content on

At the front of the paintings is red wheat bathing in the red glow of the sun as it sets. However, the
wheat appears very rigid, they are stiff instead of flexible plants that some of Hunt's other paintings
depict: the bushes in Our English Coasts are fluid, they appears to grow everywhere and the grasses
in A converted British Family sheltering a Christian Missionary from the Persecution of the Druids
is very flexible, able to blend and tilt any direction. The wheats in Fairlight Downs, for me, are very
solid, unable to bend and will break if the sheep wanders near it. However, the farther I look into the
painting, the wheat blends together more and merge with the lustfully green grass where the sheep
roam. I think that the stiff wheat near the beginning is to symbolize that Britain is going through
fragile time, where one mistake can break Britain dominance during over the world. But the blend
of grass and wheat is very smooth, as if saying that by moving forward, everything will fall into
place as everyone, the sheep, as people, and the dog, as the Queen, work together to achieve the end
result: creation of factories, expansion of land, and advancement of trade; the sheep provide the
means to create goods and the dog monitors the process. Even the clouds in the background
seemingly represent support from the heaven by the depiction of shining lights. On the edge of the
sky, there

Summary Of The Painting 'The Enchanted Flute'
The artist of The Enchanted Flute, Josephine Wall, grew up knowing she wanted to be an artist.
From the moment she picked up her first box of crayons, she knew where she belonged in the world.
Eventually, after painting many other paintings, she created a masterpiece called The Enchanted
Flute. The Enchanted Flute depicts dreams, reality, and the creation of everything in one painting,
making us pause to question what is real and what is a dream. Josephine Wall has always loved
bright and expressive colors, using more than necessary more often than not, to the point where it is
one of her trademarks. The Enchanted Flute is a great example of her love of colors. Every color is a
new, vibrant hue of the usual colors. The refreshing yellow of the flowers, the soothing green of the
plants, the warmth of the orange skies and the coolness of the blue waters, they are all shown in The
Enchanting flute. Normally, so many colors would be an overload and cause it to hated. But, she
found just the right balance between the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the ones that were most similar was The Spirit of Flight. It also has one person, female, as
the main focus but still has the smaller aspects around her. It also follows the whimsical feel of The
Enchanted Flute, making the impossible feel possible. Astral Voyage, another one of Josephine
Wall's works, follows more of the dreams aspect of The Enchanted Flute. It again has a main female
but, while still feeling whimsical, it adds the dreams aspect. It truly embodies some peoples favorite
personification of dreams, that the sky and space itself is the limit. Lastly, Breath of Gaia still has
the main female, but this time, it's more god–like than whimsical. The painting gives of the feeling
that she created the world, like god is said to have done. The Enchanted Flute also gives off this
feeling, the way the flute spews out cities and planets like musical

Thesis Statement Of Color Theory
I. Introduction
Have you ever looked at a painting with vibrant colors or at a poster with amazing color scheme and
wondered how the artist and designer chose these colors and made them work together? The answer
is they've consulted their intuition and the color theory. The color theory is like a formula that
guides creators to choose colors that work together in harmony and design. According to the color
theory there are different categories based on the color wheel: Primary colors, Secondary colors and
Tertiary colors (Colormatters.com, 2015).
A. Background:
Wikipedia (2015) quoted that color theory principles first found in the writings of Leone Battista
Alberti (C.1435) and the notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci (C.1490). In the 18th century the color
theory started with an agreement with the controversy around Isaac Newton's Theory of Color
(Optics, 1704) and the nature of primary colors. At that point, the color theory was established as an
independent artistic tradition with only few ties to the superficial exterior with colorimetry and
vision science (Wikipedia, 2015).
B. Thesis Statement:
The purpose of this term ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The complementary colors are the opposing colors on the color wheel. If these colors were to be put
next to each other one will emphasize the other, but if they were mixed together they will cancel
each other's hues and produce an achromatic light mixture (white, gray or black) (Wikipedia, 2015).
For example, if we took the two opposing colors on the color wheel blue and orange and tested the
complementary element. If we placed an orange (fruit) on a blue plate the orange color will be
intensified. But, if we took the colors orange and blue as paint and mixed them together they'll
produce a gray color. As a result, we can conclude that orange is the complementary color of blue
and vice

Analysis Of The Ambassadors By Hans Holbein II
Criticizing a painting has a process that contains only four steps to it. Describe, analyze, interpret,
and judge are the four steps to evaluating any work of art. The painting that we will use this process
on is called "The Ambassadors" by Hans Holbein II in the year 1533 which is an oil painting on a
panel. We will apply this process to determine if his work of art is a success or a failure. The first
element I look at to describe the painting was the title. Reading the title with the year gave me an
idea of what the painting could be about, which in this case would be ambassadors during the
Reformation of Europe. After beginning to view this piece of art, the first aspect I notice is located
on the foreground of the painting which is a skull tilted to an angle where, if viewed from other
perspectives, people could mistake it for another object. After recognizing the skull, I assumed the
painting was a historical subject of the two figures standing or a narrative over these two–people
standing proudly as if they accomplished a grand achievement through realism. Afterwards I
concluded that the subject view would have been focused on the two men standing. The next object
that caught my attention was those two men standing, especially the one standing in the lighter
colored clothing. Soon after I examined the items in the background while trying to identify them.
Most of the tools and other objects I couldn't determine but it gives insight to how scholarly the two
men could

Water Color Painting 'Golden Hibiscus By Georgia O' Keefe
Self Reflection Essay Art 1 Final Project My project is a water color painting inspired by Georgia
O'Keefe. It is based on her painting titled "Golden Hibiscus." I made this by first drawing a rough
sketch in my notebook and changing it to includes cross contour lines as to incorporate elements
learned in other chapters rather than just water colors. After I finished the initial sketch I redrew it
onto water color paper and outlined it in a thin sharpie. Then I practiced with my water color pencils
to become comfortable with this new element before I used it on the final. I then colored in every
other line space to mimic the style we did in "Observing Otherwise." I started with my red pencil
and had it fade from orange to yellow. I made sure to be quick when I added water to try to make
the blending as smooth as possible. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The elements used were water colors and cross contour lines. The artist that used the techniques for
water colors is Georgia O'Keeffe. I used the theme of observing to combine elements used in
different chapters into one project by studying how Georgia O'Keeffe used water colors and how
Andy Warhol used cross contour lines. The artist that mainly inspired the work was Georgia
O'Keeffe. Georgia O'Keeffe was born on November 15, 1887 and died on March 6, 1986. O'Keeffe
studied art from 1905–1912, however she was most prominent in the 1920s. O'Keeffe created most
of her artwork in the early 1900s. She created the art to express emotions and the way she felt about
certain topics. Georgia O'Keeffe observed the landscapes around her and put the beauty onto a

Color Theory
Abstract
Color is everywhere, everyday. It can be interesting and helpful to research the ways that color can
affect a person's everyday lives, not just for artists and photographers. Different colors can convey
feelings and affect a person's mood and behavior in many ways. The basic research question for this
paper is: In what ways do colors affect one's mood and how can they be used to people's advantage?
These answers can be found by reviewing journals, books, and articles that feature expert views on
the subject and also many studies that have been conducted. It is concluded through this research
that colors play a big role in everybody's life, affecting mood through interior design, clothing, and
marketing.

Purple, the last of the well–known 'rainbow' shades, has mixed properties of its energizing red and
soothing blue. Bright purples take on the fun side of red, while cooler and deeper purples are seen as
the color of royalty. The meanings behind each color stems from their undertones, and also a lot to
do with how the colors are seen in nature.
Colors used in Marketing With so much meaning behind colors, there are ways that people can use
colors to get a message or feeling across. This technique is seen a lot in the marketing world.
Marketers will use color theory and placement to attract customers and make shoppers think or act a
certain way. The colors that are used in stores are planned by the marketing team of the company to
attract a particular demographic and make them want to shop and purchase their products. In the
retail environment, color plays a big role in the atmosphere. The store environment plays a big role
in communicating the image of the store to customers, and even affects the amount of time and
money that people will spend in the store (Custers, de Kort, Usselstein, & de Kruiff, 2010). It
was found that colors with a warm undertone, such as red and yellow tones, are better for attracting
customers into a store. These colors should be and are commonly used for store windows and
displays at the entrance. These colors are viewed as disruptive when used inside of the store,

The Good Life Chris Johanson Analysis
Chris Johanson's artwork uses a multitude of colors and faces to depict individuality amongst the
various figures within the art. Some of the figures contain less detail and realism, such as elongated
ears, unrealistic skin pigmentation, or even transparency. This, alongside the individually colored
thought lines attribute to the idea of individuality amongst others. All this individuality however,
ammasses to a black and ominous presence, dismissed as it ultimately fails to accumulate to
anything other than darkness. This artwork most closely resembles a line from Ralph Emerson's
"Self–Reliance," and his transcendentalist philosophy. Emerson states that "[a] man should learn to
detect ... that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within ... [y]et he dismisses [it]
without notice ... because it is his" The gleam of light, as described by Emerson, resembles the
colors that protrude from the heads of the figures within Johanson's artwork. None of the figures in
the painting seem to notice this light that sprouts from within them, and is dismissed, as Emerson
states it, in the form of ominous darkness. Furthermore, the transcendentalist philosophy that
promotes individuality is well applied within Johanson's artwork within the unique figures that stand
out of the crowd; their thoughts however, alongside the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Coffee And The Coffee Connection Essay
With the lack of coffee chain stores in southern Iowa, it is no surprise that the locals of Knoxville,
Iowa, and surrounding areas look towards The Coffee Connection as their source of coffee. Facing
the courthouse, the dark tinted windows allow a glimpse as to what lies inside The Coffee
Connection. According to an employee of this establishment, The Coffee Connection has been
around for thirteen years. About five years ago, management changed hands. Despite the impression
left by the name, The Coffee Connection offers more than just coffee and associated products. It
also offers meals, desserts, locally made products, and assorted events for the public. There are
certain expectations as to walking into an independent coffee shop for the first time. It is no
different for The Coffee Connection. A person expects warmth, the smell of coffee, hipsters,
businessmen, and great coffee. While The Coffee Connection meets many of these expectations,
some are not met. This is not necessarily a letdown, though, as The Coffee Connection has its own
unique charm.
Soft classic rock, light chatter, and warm colors envelop a person as soon as they walk into The
Coffee Connection. Surprisingly, the shop does not smell like coffee. In fact, it smells just the same
as the outside. The lack of coffee smell is made up for in the environment, though. Shades and tints

Analyzing Winslow Homer's Painting The Fog Warning
Winslow Homer created this painting The Fog Warning in 1885 using oil on canvas. The subject of
this piece is the fisherman. It is currently a collection in the Museum of Fine Arts. This painting was
an anonymous gift with credit to the otis norcross fund. Its dimensions are 30¼ by 48½ in. I viewed
this artwork on mfa.org. It is one of the three paintings he produced at Prout's neck in 1885
describing the live of north atlantic men.
This style of art in this work, like many of his other pieces, is realistic. There is a fisherman in the
row boat. He has a couple of big catches in his boat. He is rowing and looking concerned. Perhaps
it's because the water is getting rough or there is bad weather coming. The ocean covers a little more
than half of this picture while the sky occupies the rest. This picture uses many elements and
principles. Movement, for example, is emphasized by the rolling waves and the rocking boat.. The
water has a rough texture to it. The amount of water and sky is roughly proportionate, although there
a a little more amount of the ocean than there is sky. Value can also be seen on the boats and the
waters shading and highlights. There is a well defined border between the water and the sky. ...

indicate. The waves have a very defined shape. But the fog blends a little more with its background.

Art Reflection
On November 4, 2017, I went to the Fort Worth's modern arts museum to do a research for my arts
class. I haven't gone to an arts museum since I was in 7th grade. I actually thought it was really
boring but now that I went again it was actually really interesting. I went with my boyfriend and all
of the art work actually got our eyes attention and makes us look deeper into the picture it made us
think. My professor sent me to go look at three specific arts which are representational,
representational abstract, and non–representational abstraction. The first art work that got my
attention was representational, it was from Phillip Guston. It is called "Street II" made out of oil on
canvas, it was made in 1977 and the size of it is 171.4 x 184.1 cm. The art shows us some type of
shading and grisaille because it looks like the background was all white at first and then he started to
shade a lot of the drawing. He mainly used dark grey, red and some parts black. He used warm
colors which basically represented sadness. The art was a tired stranded dog eating out of a trash
can, most of the shapes used in this drawing were circles. I couldn't tell at the very top background
of the drawing if it was roots of trees or people's legs with shoes on. This drawing is
representational because this is actually happening in reality, there are a lot of homeless dogs out in
the street either eating out of trash cans or sleeping under bridges. It makes me feel upset because
most of those dogs

Impact Color Associations Have on Gender Stereotypes
intro
Surely it is common knowledge nowadays that pink is the colour for girls and blue is the colour for
boys, but the real question is, why? How did the colour pink gain its label as a girls colour? And
why is blue recognised today as a boys colour? Why have these particular colours become so gender
specific?
Do these gender normal behaviours reflect some built in biological difference between the sexes or
did culture somehow dictate the gender preferences? Are they culturally manufactured? Have we as
a modern society constructed this problematic gender identity through the use of advertising and
marketing?
Despite supposedly living in a modern day era where the efforts are being made to promote gender
equality; the stereotyping of gender still remains such a social problem, it is still evident that there is
still a major gender divide when it comes to little girls and boys.
Throughout this report I will examine the impact that colour associations have on gender
stereotyping and how the environments we artificially create add to this establishment of
stereotypical beliefs. I will examine how contemporary culture such as media and advertisement
contributed to this into creating these superficial connotations?
A view from (Bodenhausen & Macrae, 1998; Macrae & Bodenhausen, 2000), the stereotypes
themselves originate in specific beliefs about the sexes that are culturally specified.
The form these beliefs commonly take is that of an association between a particular
object

Do Women Prefer Dark Colors Than Men?
Statistic Final Project: "Do women prefer dark colors than men?"
By: Andrea Motta
Previous Studies of this topic
According to the study done by Guilford and Smith (1959), there was found that men are generally
more attracted toward achromatic colors than women. In addition, they also proposed that women
might be more conscious of the colors and their color preference is more flexible and diverse. Also,
years later, McInnis and Shearer (1964) stated that 56% of men and 76% of women preferred cool
colors, and 51% men and 45% women chose bright colors. In a similar study, Plater (1967) stated
that men usually prefer stronger chromes than women.

dark clothes and dark color for their car. 12% of men and 22% of women prefer light/bright clothes
and light/bright color for their car. 26% of men and 21% of women does not have a relationship in
color.
Analysis of the Data
The samples and results are not limited to a specific area because of the use of social media, but it
was simple random sample.
Descriptive Data Analysis: A pie chart was used to describe the sample data since there were only
two categories of individuals (Men and Women). The pie chart reveled that the majority of
respondents were Women (52%) compared to Men (48%). On one hand, the 52% of women were
distributed as, 42% preferred light colors, 17% preferred dark colors, and 41% did not have
preference of colors (figure 1). On the other side, the 48% of men were distributed as, 25% of light
colors, 21% of dark colors, and 54% did not have color preference (figure 2). Test Analysis: Chi–
square analysis was done using TI–84plus to identify the association of gender and preference of
color. The claim that the color chosen is dependent of the gender is tested at ∝=0.05.

Analysis Of The Book ' The Big Boat '
The Big Boat Going to the LACMA art museum was a very good experience to see many different
types of artwork by different artists. In 1920 Robert Michel created a painting named "Ship", which
it contained many visual elements such as cool and warm colors curvilinear geometric figures. First
of all, Michel shows the viewer a lot of curvilinear lines meaning a consisting of, bounded by, or
characterized by a curved line, or a along a curved line of a set of coordinates determined by or
determining a system of three orthogonal surfaces (definition from the internet). Geometric
meaning, a set of points or vertices lines connecting the points in a closed chain, as well as the
resulting interior points. Such shapes are called polygons and include triangles, squares, and
pentagons (definition from the internet). And irregular shapes meaning polygon that does not have
all sides equal and all angles equal. A polygon is "regular" only when all angles are equal and all
sides are equal, otherwise it is irregular (definition from the internet). He also adds warm, cool and
intensity colors to catch the viewer attention. The person analyzing the painting really has to pay
very close attention to Micheles art work. Michele tends to add a lot of small detail to his art work
mostly about life; such as the sea representing water, animals like elephants, numbers, moving flags
representing air, two humans in the house representing a family, a clock representing time, rims, and

Edvard Munch's Painting Scream Munich Essay
Edvard Munch's Painting Scream Munich
Edvard Munch is looked upon as one of the most significant influences on the development of
expressionism. Edvard Munch was quoted as saying "We want more than a mere photograph of
nature. We do not want to paint pretty pictures to be hung on drawing–room walls. We want to
create, or at least lay the foundations of, an art that gives something to humanity. An art that arrests
and engages. An art created of one's innermost heart." I believe in The Scream Munch did just as he
said.
The expressionism period was a movement to invoke emotions through art work. In The Scream

It was with these emotions Munch eventually, in 1893, brought to the canvas of The Scream. He
tried to create the all encompassing emotion of total complete undeniable despair. When all hope is
gone; when death is eventual; when the world seems to be completely aganist you and there is
nothing you can do about any of it. The Scream displays the despair of life as he had experienced
one day while walking with his friends. As he has written himself "I was walking along the road
with two friends. The sun set. I felt a tinge of melancholy. Suddenly the sky became a bloody red. I
stopped, leaned aganist the railing, dead tired, and I looked at the flaming clouds that hung like
blood and a sword over the blue–black fjord and the city. My friends walked on. I stood there,
trembling with fright. And I felt a loud, unending scream piercing nature."
How did Munch achieve sunch an enormously disturbing effect? Looking at it we see a deformed

Stylisticism In The Swimmer Poem
The Liffey Swim is a painting capturing the annual Dublin river race. It cleverly depicts the crowd
gathered flowing out of the painting. This makes the viewer feel like they are a part of the artwork
and action that is taking place in the painting. The crowd leaning forward and the passengers
passing by on the tram trying to catch a glimpse of the race, bring the viewers eyes to the three
swimmers portrayed trying to see for themselves, what everyone is paying attention too. ''Yeats
captures the atmosphere and thrill of an event that has been part of Dublin's annual sporting calendar

They both portray people during important life events and memories. The most obvious difference is
the abandonment of realism and trying to portray the scenes truthfully. In the first painting, The
Liffey Swim, Yeats evidently tries to be precise and accurate and to depict the scene truthfully.
"Yeats, in his early works, adopted Sickett's use of short thick strokes of paint and his manner of
correlating colour"2. The colours he used are very neutral, mostly browns, dark blues, muddy reds,
and dull yellows, with a contrasting light blue sky which brightens the painting. His use of warm
and cold colours creates unity and variety. His use of warm earthy colours in the foreground creates
unity. However, the contrast between the warm earthy colours in the foreground and the cool blue
colours in the background create variety. The waves in the water create a sense of motion and are
slightly more curved around the swimmers showing their impact on the movement of the water. The
people depicted leaning forward also create a sense of motion and action taking place. This sense of

Color Theory: English Language Learners
PROCEDURE:
Day 1 – Color Theory
1. Students will read pages 56–59 in the ArtTalk book about color and discuss the 5 questions at the
end of the reading with their table groups. The table groups may take turns reading out loud or with
a partner to assist in the reading comprehension. English Language Learners (ELLs) would benefit
from working with a student that is skilled in English and in reading.
2. As a class, the questions are discussed while the teacher calls on groups to discuss their answers.
3. The vocabulary handouts are distributed for students to take notes. Since all of my ELLs are
Spanish speakers, a handout is available with English and Spanish terms.
4. The teacher goes into further detail on color theory by projecting the PowerPoint ... Show more

As a class, we review from the Color Theory PowerPoint how color can stir certain emotions and
affect our mood. We also review from a previous lesson how line can affect our emotions.
4. Sample works from the Warm/Cool color project are displayed and students analyze what seems
to work and could have been handled better.
5. Each student selects one event from their mind map and creates practice drawings of how they
can illustrate the event. The color scheme needs to be planned out this point.
6. Students begin by creating a pencil drawing of their images. They may use the computer or their
phone as a picture references. Otherwise, there are various books in the classroom with images that
students may use as a reference for their drawing.
7. Once the drawing is complete, student are to add color using color pencils. Half of the drawing is
colored using warm colors, while the other half is colored using cool colors. Students may divide
their warm and cool colors horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
8. When the students have completed their artwork, they are to write an artist statement expressing
their event and the planning process involved in creating their artwork.
9. Students read their first draft of the writing assignment with a partner to check for

The Theories Of Race Versus Skin Color And Gender Versus Sex
Is a person a homosexual or do they simply identify as a female in a man's body; is a lady African–
American or does she simply have dark colored skin? These are two of the basic examples of how
science and culture have differing opinions. In this work, I will examine the diametrically opposing
views of science versus culture on human variation. The concepts of race versus skin color and
gender versus sex will be the primary focal points of this writing. For the science perspectives, data
will be used from the works of both D. Crocetti, who holds a doctorate degree in human something,
and G.D. James who holds a doctorate degree in anthropology. These are both subject matter experts
in their chosen fields of study. For the cultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course, this is not the politically correct position in this country where much popular opinion has
given rise to gender neutrality among other asinine ideas. There is a dichotomy between biological
and cultural perspectives of how human variation is viewed, especially apparent in both race vs
physical appearance and gender vs sex, which are often highly debated and publicized topics in
today's world. In the following paragraphs I will highlight a few of those disagreements.
Homo Sapient evolution is still a highly debated topic which abounds with misinformation leading
to relatively intelligent individuals who still try to deny that evolution is how we as a species came
to be. However, it has stood the test of time as a scientifically supported theory and its evidence
grows on a regular basis due in large part to the recent breakthroughs in DNA research and the
complete mapping of the human genome. Even though science has shown all humans share a recent
common ancestor, prejudiced beliefs about peoples race still influence social interaction and have
for most of recorded history. The Greeks and Barbarians are a classic example; the people of Greece
being a little xenophobic and very ethnocentric, labeled other races barbarians simply because they
could not understand their language and thought it sounded like

This magazine is being sold on cable television or stores and to music production for their audience

that everything worth doing is worth overdoing" (Maxim 2). By emphasizing colors and the concept
of overpowering the world's laws of perfections, my advertisement revises masculinity in a more

Logo Quiz: The Theory Of The Munsell Color Theory
"Mixing colors gives birth to an infinite number of new colors, but there exist only four true colors –
like four elements – from which one can make numerous other colors. Red is the color of flame,
blue – the color of air, green – the color of water and the earth has grey and ashy".
Theorists who lived later including Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton , proved that the three
basic colors are in fact red, blue and yellow.
Modern theory of color was worked out by an American artist Albert Henry Munsell at the
beginning of the 20th century. Instead of traditionally following the simplified system of three basic
colors, Munsell invented the Munsell Color Theory with the concept of color space in the center –

successful companies, whose logos we are well acquainted with, and from whose color
combinations trigger our associations.

Trichromatic Theory And Afterimages: The Perception Of Color
Perception of Color Color is determined by the lengths of waves of light. Although there is no sure
way to fully tell how we actually perceive color, there are two theories that seek to explain so. One
is the trichromatic and the other opponent–process. Whereas one theory lacks in explaining a key
problem the other succeeds, which is the case of the trichromatic theory and afterimages. Although
the trichromatic theory does not explain the phenomenon of afterimages, of the two theories, the
trichromatic one best explains how we see color. Firstly, the trichromatic theory explains that there
are three types of cones red, green, and blue. Ciccarelli states "Cones are special receptor cells that
respond to the various wavelengths of light" (Sandra Ciccarelli 96). Now of the three cones,
different shades of color correspond to different amounts of light received by them. The cones then

Opponent–process adds yellow to the three primary colors, and arranges them in pairs with each
member an opponent of each other, or opposite if looked at on a secondary and higher color wheel.
By placing the opponents in pairs one member becomes inhibited and stops working. Now
opponent–process works by having ganglion cells in the retina stimulated by light from one end of
the spectrum and inhibited by the other. So, if red and green ganglion cells are exposed to red light,
then the color seen is red, but when exposed to long it becomes fatigued. Then, when exposed to
white light the color shown is the inhibited color green and the result is an afterimage (98). By this
theory opponent–process explains the mystery of afterimages and other visual perception.
Detractors in defense of the opponent process theory could say this is ultimately the correct
supposition as to how we perceive color. Not by the combination of colored cones, but through
inhibiting, opponent ganglion cells responding to a colored light

A Visual Analysis Distinctively Visual
Art has multiple purposes. Some people enjoy art for the emotional engagement they receive while

Other people see art as a way to balance who they are as a human. Where some people see

what the reason, art is a vital part of the community not easily forgotten. One thing, however, is

Then, making sure your brush does not leak, put it versus the side of the container. Do not run the

After cutting–in the corners, work in areas about 3 feet square. Hold the brush so that your thumb

City Of God Research Paper
Cosmetics of Poverty: Use of Color and Light in City of God Colors are the visual ingredients that
make up the things we see and to an extent, feel in life. They are simple representations of emotions,
making up the visual aspect of life. If color represents emotion, light is the meter by which we feel
certain emotions. "Color and light go closely together. Colors are the components of light" (Magrin–
Chagnolleau). Dim light is romantic while white light is confrontational. Together these go hand in
hand to create the core of the emotional and aesthetic experience of a motion picture. City of God is
no exception to this, it utilizes color and light to the fullest extent to express the evolution of
deterioration throughout three decades in a Brazilian slum. Politics and society who is not present to
witness poverty firsthand can often treat it as a black and white situation, often talking about it in
different lights. Brazilian culture is no strange to this alienation of poverty. However, City of God is

The Slave Ship Turner Summary
The Slave Ship
The artwork that I chose was The Slave Ship by J.M.W. Turner. This was a piece made with oil on
canvas, made in 1840. The subject includes a slave ship on the ocean with a storm coming. Some
objects in this painting are a ship, raging ocean, birds, and bodies in the ocean. The Slave Ship was
created during the romantic era. One quality that shows the piece is from the romantic era is that he
displays humans as helpless to nature. Turner uses dark reds, grays, blues, and yellows to convey
despair and hardship. He did a great job of showing that nature is superior to humans by his
proportion of the slave ship. The ship is small and engulfed in waves showing that even though
humans may be selfish, nature will always have a power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This book described an incident in which the captain on a ship with slaves didn't want to loose
money from the slaves that were dead and dying. To prevent the money loss, he had the sick and
dead slaves thrown into the ocean. () This book gave Turner all the motivation to create the The
Slave Ship.
The meaning that I got out of the piece was that humans try to control things, when in the end we
are helpless. I got this from the piece by the slave ship throwing slaves overboard, which shows
what humans were trying to control. The storm symbolizes that things like nature we can't control
even if we wanted to. I personally relate to this piece by sometimes I try to control things that I
can't, and I should just let it go. Some symbolism shown throughout this piece is through the storm
coming on the ship. This symbolizes the decrease of slavery that is coming their way. I think The
Slave Ship has intrinsic value because the piece is beautiful, and it has a profound meaning. Created
in the romantic era shows that it has a deeper meaning, and this piece could be used to persuade
people to not support slavery. Creating your own meaning, shows that this piece is important, and
has value. I think that the piece successfully conveys its meaning by making you think about how
poorly the slaves were treated. Also, having nature overtaking the ship makes this a romantic piece.

Essay on Using Semiotics for Branding
In today's world an individual is bombarded with brands from companies all around the world.
These companies start with an idea and most of those ideas develop into a brand. Brands rely on the
use of semiotics, "the science of signs" (Ryan and Conover 25), to relate to consumers or
interpreters. They also relay on the connotation and denotation of the signs as well as the colors
being used. When it comes to the entire package of a marketing plan and branding a company or
product, graphic designers need to look at how to create the brand from a visually and culturally
pleasing aspect. A brand is mostly based on a semiotic design that uses a trademark image and
colors that relate to a group in a cultural setting.
When it comes to branding, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many strategies that graphic designers and marketing directors use to create a logo for a
company in order to form a brand. One logo strategy is to create an image that is familiar to
individuals even if it's an image that has never been seen before. Subjective familiarity is the
"perception or feeling of familiarity, whether or not it is based on previous exposure" (Henderson
and Cote 17). A critical finding in logo strategy is that cultures are homogenous in their response to
design. "Gestalt psychology suggests that "good design is determined by culturally held beliefs"
(Henderson and Cote 18). It may be difficult for an individual from an outside culture to understand
a specific design. In one culture, the meaning of a sign can be completely opposite of the culture in
which it is used, i.e. the use of the thumbs up signal.
In graphic design, semantics and pragmatics play an integral role in the development of a logo.
According to Steven Skaggs, "semantics investigates meaning, or more properly, the relationship
between the sign and its referents as interpreted.... Pragmatics studies the relationship between
semiosis and the interpreter, or interpreting group" (37). This means that an image may be
interpreted differently by one individual. This is usually based upon the person's background and/or
culture as well as their physiological demographic. Skaggs believes that a design can have a
denotation when it is interpreted narrowly in a

Light is a form of energy that behaves in some ways like waves. Light waves have a range of
wavelengths. A wavelength is the distance between any point on one wave and the corresponding
point on the next wave. Different wavelengths of light appear to us as different colors. Light that
contains all wavelengths in the same proportions as sunlight appears white. See LIGHT.
When a beam of sunlight passes through a specially shaped glass object called a prism, the rays of
different wavelengths are bent at different angles. The bending breaks up the sunlight into a
beautiful band of colors. This band contains all the colors of the rainbow and is called the visible
spectrum. At one end of the spectrum, the light appears as violet. It consists of the shortest
wavelengths of light that we can see. Farther along the spectrum, the light has increasingly longer
wavelengths. It appears as blue, green, yellow, orange, and red, each shading into its neighboring
colors in the spectrum. The longest wavelengths of light that we can see appear deep red in color.
Some descriptions of the spectrum also mention the color indigo, which is closely related to blue,
between violet and blue.

The size of the bloom relative to a human really reflected the relative importance of nature and

irises, sweet peas, morning glories, poppies, forget–me–nots, marigolds, poinsettias, orchids,
sunflowers, petunias, marigolds, and many more were reborn in her paintings. O'Keeffe wasn't
happy because people looked at her paintings and tried to see them in the way of a female. She said,
"Well––I made you take time to look at what I saw and when you took time to really notice my
flower you hung all your own associations with flowers on my flower and you write about my
flower as if I think and see what you think and see of the flower––and I don't." She did not like the
idea that people thought she painted the way she did because she was a female. She painted that way
because that was how she saw things. The flowers that she created epitomize her growth, success,
magnetism, and energy at that certain stage in her career. Her choice to paint these flowers was
influenced by her early training, natural attraction to flowers, and the idea of something fresh and
fragile.
Close observations of O'Keeffe's flowers show that she never really pursued the realistic approach.

Color Perception: The Trichromatic Theory Of Color
Perception of Color Perception is being consciously aware (Goldstein, 2014, p. 8). Color is used in
our everyday life and is usually taken for granted. Many people don't understand how important
color is by differentiating between your red top and your yellow one, or knowing if you should stop
on a red light of drive on a green light. Being born with a color deficiency is easier because you
don't know what color is rather than losing the ability to see color after an accident. In our Sensation
and Perception book, they gave an example about and artist that lost his ability to perceive color
leading him to form depression. The artist eventually coped with his disability and started painting
black and white portraits (Goldstein, 2014, p. 200). An experiment was done by James W. Tanaka
and L.M. Presnell (1999) where they asked observers to identify objects with their normal color or
with a color change. Observers identified the objects with their original color more precisely than
the objects that were changed. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The theory was a result of color–matching experiments, in which observers adjusted the amounts of
three different wavelengths of light mixed together in a "comparison field" until the color matched
the color of a single wavelength in a "test field". The trichromatic theory of color vision states that
in order to perceive color, you need three different receptor mechanisms or three primary colors. If a
human were to be given only two primaries or wavelengths, then some colors cannot be matched.
The theory was then became the Young–Helmholtz theory of color vision stating that the vision of
color depends on three receptor mechanisms but with different spectral sensitivities. This means that
perception of color is stimulated by different wavelength and to different degrees. (Goldstein, 2014,
p. 204) (PSY 343– color,

Such objects as traffic lights and neon signs appear colored because the light that they give off
contains a limited range of wavelengths. However, most objects appear colored because their
chemical structure absorbs certain wavelengths of light and reflects others. When sunlight strikes a
carrot, for example, molecules in the carrot absorb most of the light of short wavelengths. Most of
the light of longer wavelengths is reflected. When these longer wavelengths of light reach our eyes,
the carrot appears orange.
An object that reflects most of the light of all wavelengths in nearly equal amounts appears white.
An object that absorbs most of the light of all wavelengths in nearly equal amounts appears black.
How we see color
The roles of the eyes and brain. Our ability to see color depends on many highly complicated
workings of the eyes and brain. When we look at an object, light coming from the object enters our
eyes. Each eye focuses the light, forming an image of the object on the retina. The retina is a thin
layer of tissue covering the back and sides of the inside of the eyeball. It contains millions of light–
sensitive cells. These cells absorb most of the light that falls on the retina and convert the light to
electrical signals. These electrical signals then travel through nerves to the brain.

Hart Benton Section 3 Summary
In this paper we will be discussing a mural by Thomas Hart Benton titled, A Social History of the
State of Missouri. This mural is located in the Missouri state capitol in Jefferson City Missouri. This
mural is located in the House Lounge of the capitol building. The mural covers 3 of the walls with
the exception of the West wall full of windows. The room measured 25 feet wide, 55 feet long, and
14feet 2 inches high. Benton used egg tempera for the mural and beeswax and varnish to protect it.
In 1935, House Bill 536, Section 87B became law, appropriating $16,000 for Benton to paint a
mural in the House Lounge of the Missouri State Capitol. The mural was completed in 1936.
Description:
As you walk into the House Lounge you are facing the west wall that is a row of windows. Benton
painted corn stalks, railroad lines, electrical line towers, and smoke from the train between the
windows. As you walk to the right you are facing the North wall it showcases Missouri's early
history. It is split into five sections and door separating them. There are three larger sections and two
smaller ones. In the first large panel to the left of the door you see an Indian trading with a white

Nancy Spero Mother And Children
The Final Critique
My artwork that I chose is called "Mother and Children" by Nancy Spero , and its oil on canvas. In
this art piece, you can see a figure who seems to be holding someone in their arms, and it captivates
you and catches your attention because of the sheer display of emotions that you get while looking
at it. When I went to the museum this is the first painting that caught my eye all because I could
sense the feeling that the artist was trying to convey to her audience. To me, I feel that the artist is
trying to say how a mother will protect her children and/or family at any cost, but also that there is a
dark and painful past to what happens to women and children. The message I picked up from this
artwork is that a mother will do anything for her family no matter the circumstances. When I was ...

The space of the artwork makes it feel as if the woman and the children are coming out at you. The
texture is implied because you feel like you can almost feel how their skin would feel or what it
would feel like if you were to just run your hand down the body of the artist's main focal point. I'm
not really too confident on the lines of this painting only because there are so many ways that she
did her brush strokes, you have some thin lines but you also have thicker and darker lines that give
off a brooding feeling or almost depressive feel. Her color choices were spot on because of the
browns, grays, blue tinges, and off white colors, it makes you feel semi–depressed but only so that
you can get a feel of how other women may be feeling somewhere in the world. Shaping's of this
are very much implied so that you can see the children that she is holding in her arms and the way
her eyes and face look so sad and how you can see that she's trying to push through for her kid's

Art Critique Of Guitar Hero Painting

  • 1. Examples Of Art Critique I chose to critique a painting that I saw when I went to the Fine Arts Center here in Tullahoma. The Fine Arts Center host many different exhibits in a year, but the recent one is The Watercolor Society's one hundred forty ninth Traveling Exhibit. The Tullahoma Fine Arts center used to be the house of The Baillet Sisters. Supposedly the women still walk around, and open doors. On the upstairs wall there are two paintings of each of the sisters. The painting is called "Guitar Hero" and it was created by W. Michael Bush, an artist that was born in Indiana, but resides in Bell Buckle. "Guitar Hero" is a painting that centralizes a musician and surrounds him with a crowd at his feet. It includes a combination of warm and cool colors mostly being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It relates to me because I am definitely not creative enough to go where those amazingly creative people have gone. I do not have the talent to even be creative or musically talented. This piece symbolizes to me that musicians are adored and paid millions of dollars but it is too much. There are musicians and artists who never achieve that fame or fortune and they are the same. It also shows that music and art are one in the same. People are often put in a pedestal in both walks of life and they are using their creative talents to express their feelings and try and get others to enjoy their works, or just make it big and make tons of money. I think this work of art is valuable because there are so many levels to it. It is not just a painting. It really shows the separation between regular people and celebrities. It can be said though that this piece lacks use of principles of design. There a lot of abstract elements to this piece and it could have used more line to separate and clear the image up instead of leaving it jumbled. "Guitar Hero" by W. Michael Bush leaves a lasting impression in my head that cannot be done by any ordinary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay On Affandi Affandi is one of the maestros of painting in Indonesia. He is one of the legendary painters who possessed expressionism in his painting. Instead of depicting an objective reality, expressionism highlights the subjective emotions and responses which the objects and events raise within a person (Kleiner 727). Affandi creates a work of art by implementing a realistic technique which directly influenced by his surrounding environment. One of his famous paintings was entitled as Potret Diri Menghisap Pipa. An oil on canvas painting sized 125cm x 99 cm created in 1997. The piece is composed of horizontal dimension with a simple visualization. This painting will be reviewed based on several section, such as; a brief description, formal analysis, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An extensive message was contended into it. Regarding to the identification of object's similarity, the face, sun, and pipe act as the icons of the piece. Even tough, it is not realist but the old man's face seems to be similar as the appearance Affandi's face, and so do red circle and the sun. In terms of metamorphic, the sun is the most influential icon which possibly represents the star that is the central body of a solar system which acquires its own light and possessed as the main source of living. The sun is captured in a circle shape which added with the radiating lines. Thus, the visualization of the sun is radial which stimulates the viewer to focus on one point and suggests that an explosion is about to come suddenly. The face in this piece is closely associated with Affandi's face, with a forehead, messy hair, thin, whiskered, and pointed cheek's bone. The appearance is identical to the figure of Affandi whom is well known with his explosive character, highly courageous, and expressive. The lines, shapes, and colour are organized neatly in a compact package. At the pipe, scratched the diagonal line which tends to be flat, represents a calmness or serenity. Meanwhile, the messy lines represent a temper and dynamic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Fresco If you are a businessman, a stock broker, a salesman, or an entrepreneur then you're probably strongly motivated by money. Many factors motivate an artist to create. It could be emotion, religion, to commemorate history, or to give us a new perception on things. According to Mark Getlein, he describes Living with Art as "making art live by letting it engage our attention, our imagination, and our intelligence. (3)" If I were an artist I would be a painter, and I would paint images to give tangible form to feelings and ideas. If I were an artist I would try to show what I see and feel. So, I would show how beautiful and ugly this world could be. I would do this by using a variety of colors. Color has an emotional effect on us. Cool colors, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Numerous times, it is created with feeling and arouses feelings out of us. These pieces of art are good examples of the role of giving a tangible form to ideas and feelings. These pieces of art may give the impression of very little taking place in the image but the artwork has a greater meaning behind it. In Jacob Lawrence piece, it looks so simple but he was telling the story of thousands of African–Americans migrating from the South to the North (161). In Raphael piece, he captures the ideals of the Renaissance period. If I was an artist I want to show the ideas of this time. • 4. Janice Kindred In Town Gallery Analysis Chattanooga's "In Town Gallery" was founded in 1974, and it is home to the workings of local artists. Upon visiting this gallery, I was able to have the unique advantage of conversing with one of the artists themselves, Janice Kindred. I was able to grasp an understanding of the different medias and techniques used in the paintings and other artworks. In addition, I was able to develop an appreciation of the artists' works. The first piece that struck my eye was Vincent, a painting by Janice Kindred herself. Vincent is a painting done in acrylic. It is a colorful and vivid arrangement of a nature scene featuring trees standing upon a cliff that foray one's attention. Upon looking at this painting, the sky fascinated me the most. It was portrayed in bright blues, pinks, and purples. When talking to Kindred, she informed me that in her paintings, she likes to do a layering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Washburn founded the MMIA (Mixed Media Inspired Artists) and has been accredited to teaching numerous mixed media classes through the Southeast. In Radiant Earth, one sees a vivid portrayal of what seems to be an African savanna with a rolling grassland of shrubs and trees overlooking water. This painting was one of the most flamboyant ones I saw. It grabbed my attention with its pop of many colors. What also stood out to me was the layering technique similar to Kindred's. Lastly, I saw Chuck Frye's Snowy Day in the Cove. Different from the other paintings, this was done with oil. Like Frye's other works, Snowy Day in the Cove, focuses on realism. Frye enjoys capturing the natural harmony found within landscapes. In this painting, one sees I a desolate cabin in a snowy atmosphere. Snow aligns the surrounded forest and the cabin. Snowflakes glisten in the air. Looking at this painting, I thought it was a photograph. However, I was surprised to learn it was actually a painting. The realism of this painting fascinated ... • 5. Hunt Symbolism While I love the painting itself for the design elements, Hunt was never one to leave a colorful painting unsymbolic. Whereas some people may individually explain the symbolic meaning of each pieces of the painting, I rather look at the painting as a whole while also keeping in mind that Hunt painted this painting over a course of six years. At a closer look, the painting appears to depict the evolution of Britain over the six years; there are depictions of farmer land and factories; and sailboats and steamboats. These illustrations represent Britain's Industrial Revolution, which happened between the 18th and 19th century. Britain, before the revolution, mainly utilized farmers and human labor to craft goods and materials for export, they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the front of the paintings is red wheat bathing in the red glow of the sun as it sets. However, the wheat appears very rigid, they are stiff instead of flexible plants that some of Hunt's other paintings depict: the bushes in Our English Coasts are fluid, they appears to grow everywhere and the grasses in A converted British Family sheltering a Christian Missionary from the Persecution of the Druids is very flexible, able to blend and tilt any direction. The wheats in Fairlight Downs, for me, are very solid, unable to bend and will break if the sheep wanders near it. However, the farther I look into the painting, the wheat blends together more and merge with the lustfully green grass where the sheep roam. I think that the stiff wheat near the beginning is to symbolize that Britain is going through fragile time, where one mistake can break Britain dominance during over the world. But the blend of grass and wheat is very smooth, as if saying that by moving forward, everything will fall into place as everyone, the sheep, as people, and the dog, as the Queen, work together to achieve the end result: creation of factories, expansion of land, and advancement of trade; the sheep provide the means to create goods and the dog monitors the process. • 6. Summary Of The Painting 'The Enchanted Flute' The artist of The Enchanted Flute, Josephine Wall, grew up knowing she wanted to be an artist. From the moment she picked up her first box of crayons, she knew where she belonged in the world. Eventually, after painting many other paintings, she created a masterpiece called The Enchanted Flute. The Enchanted Flute depicts dreams, reality, and the creation of everything in one painting, making us pause to question what is real and what is a dream. Josephine Wall has always loved bright and expressive colors, using more than necessary more often than not, to the point where it is one of her trademarks. The Enchanted Flute is a great example of her love of colors. Every color is a new, vibrant hue of the usual colors. The refreshing yellow of the flowers, the soothing green of the plants, the warmth of the orange skies and the coolness of the blue waters, they are all shown in The Enchanting flute. Normally, so many colors would be an overload and cause it to hated. But, she found just the right balance between the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It also follows the whimsical feel of The Enchanted Flute, making the impossible feel possible. Astral Voyage, another one of Josephine Wall's works, follows more of the dreams aspect of The Enchanted Flute. It again has a main female but, while still feeling whimsical, it adds the dreams aspect. It truly embodies some peoples favorite personification of dreams, that the sky and space itself is the limit. Lastly, Breath of Gaia still has the main female, but this time, it's more god–like than whimsical. The painting gives of the feeling that she created the world, like god is said to have done. • 7. Thesis Statement Of Color Theory I. Introduction Have you ever looked at a painting with vibrant colors or at a poster with amazing color scheme and wondered how the artist and designer chose these colors and made them work together? The answer is they've consulted their intuition and the color theory. The color theory is like a formula that guides creators to choose colors that work together in harmony and design. According to the color theory there are different categories based on the color wheel: Primary colors, Secondary colors and Tertiary colors (Colormatters.com, 2015). A. Background: Wikipedia (2015) quoted that color theory principles first found in the writings of Leone Battista Alberti (C.1435) and the notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci (C.1490). In the 18th century the color theory started with an agreement with the controversy around Isaac Newton's Theory of Color (Optics, 1704) and the nature of primary colors. At that point, the color theory was established as an independent artistic tradition with only few ties to the superficial exterior with colorimetry and vision science (Wikipedia, 2015). B. Thesis Statement: The purpose of this term ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The complementary colors are the opposing colors on the color wheel. If these colors were to be put next to each other one will emphasize the other, but if they were mixed together they will cancel each other's hues and produce an achromatic light mixture (white, gray or black) (Wikipedia, 2015). For example, if we took the two opposing colors on the color wheel blue and orange and tested the complementary element. If we placed an orange (fruit) on a blue plate the orange color will be intensified. But, if we took the colors orange and blue as paint and mixed them together they'll produce a gray color. As a result, we can conclude that orange is the complementary color of blue and vice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Analysis Of The Ambassadors By Hans Holbein II Criticizing a painting has a process that contains only four steps to it. Describe, analyze, interpret, and judge are the four steps to evaluating any work of art. The painting that we will use this process on is called "The Ambassadors" by Hans Holbein II in the year 1533 which is an oil painting on a panel. We will apply this process to determine if his work of art is a success or a failure. The first element I look at to describe the painting was the title. Reading the title with the year gave me an idea of what the painting could be about, which in this case would be ambassadors during the Reformation of Europe. After beginning to view this piece of art, the first aspect I notice is located on the foreground of the painting which is a skull tilted to an angle where, if viewed from other perspectives, people could mistake it for another object. After recognizing the skull, I assumed the painting was a historical subject of the two figures standing or a narrative over these two–people standing proudly as if they accomplished a grand achievement through realism. • 9. Water Color Painting 'Golden Hibiscus By Georgia O' Keefe Self Reflection Essay Art 1 Final Project My project is a water color painting inspired by Georgia O'Keefe. It is based on her painting titled "Golden Hibiscus." I made this by first drawing a rough sketch in my notebook and changing it to includes cross contour lines as to incorporate elements learned in other chapters rather than just water colors. After I finished the initial sketch I redrew it onto water color paper and outlined it in a thin sharpie. Then I practiced with my water color pencils to become comfortable with this new element before I used it on the final. I then colored in every other line space to mimic the style we did in "Observing Otherwise." I started with my red pencil and had it fade from orange to yellow. I made sure to be quick when I added water to try to make the blending as smooth as possible. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The elements used were water colors and cross contour lines. Colors used in Marketing With so much meaning behind colors, there are ways that people can use colors to get a message or feeling across. This technique is seen a lot in the marketing world. Marketers will use color theory and placement to attract customers and make shoppers think or act a certain way. The colors that are used in stores are planned by the marketing team of the company to attract a particular demographic and make them want to shop and purchase their products. In the retail environment, color plays a big role in the atmosphere. The store environment plays a big role in communicating the image of the store to customers, and even affects the amount of time and money that people will spend in the store (Custers, de Kort, Usselstein, & de Kruiff, 2010). Some of the figures contain less detail and realism, such as elongated ears, unrealistic skin pigmentation, or even transparency. This, alongside the individually colored thought lines attribute to the idea of individuality amongst others. All this individuality however, ammasses to a black and ominous presence, dismissed as it ultimately fails to accumulate to anything other than darkness. This artwork most closely resembles a line from Ralph Emerson's "Self–Reliance," and his transcendentalist philosophy. Emerson states that "[a] man should learn to detect ... that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within ... None of the figures in the painting seem to notice this light that sprouts from within them, and is dismissed, as Emerson states it, in the form of ominous darkness. Facing the courthouse, the dark tinted windows allow a glimpse as to what lies inside The Coffee Connection. According to an employee of this establishment, The Coffee Connection has been around for thirteen years. About five years ago, management changed hands. Despite the impression left by the name, The Coffee Connection offers more than just coffee and associated products. It also offers meals, desserts, locally made products, and assorted events for the public. There are certain expectations as to walking into an independent coffee shop for the first time. It is no different for The Coffee Connection. A person expects warmth, the smell of coffee, hipsters, businessmen, and great coffee. While The Coffee Connection meets many of these expectations, some are not met. This is not necessarily a letdown, though, as The Coffee Connection has its own unique charm. It is currently a collection in the Museum of Fine Arts. This painting was an anonymous gift with credit to the otis norcross fund. Its dimensions are 30¼ by 48½ in. I viewed this artwork on mfa.org. It is one of the three paintings he produced at Prout's neck in 1885 describing the live of north atlantic men. This style of art in this work, like many of his other pieces, is realistic. There is a fisherman in the row boat. He has a couple of big catches in his boat. He is rowing and looking concerned. Perhaps it's because the water is getting rough or there is bad weather coming. The ocean covers a little more than half of this picture while the sky occupies the rest. This picture uses many elements and principles. Movement, for example, is emphasized by the rolling waves and the rocking boat.. The water has a rough texture to it. The amount of water and sky is roughly proportionate, although there a a little more amount of the ocean than there is sky. Value can also be seen on the boats and the waters shading and highlights. I went with my boyfriend and all of the art work actually got our eyes attention and makes us look deeper into the picture it made us think. My professor sent me to go look at three specific arts which are representational, representational abstract, and non–representational abstraction. The first art work that got my attention was representational, it was from Phillip Guston. It is called "Street II" made out of oil on canvas, it was made in 1977 and the size of it is 171.4 x 184.1 cm. The art shows us some type of shading and grisaille because it looks like the background was all white at first and then he started to shade a lot of the drawing. He mainly used dark grey, red and some parts black. He used warm colors which basically represented sadness. The art was a tired stranded dog eating out of a trash can, most of the shapes used in this drawing were circles. I couldn't tell at the very top background of the drawing if it was roots of trees or people's legs with shoes on. This drawing is representational because this is actually happening in reality, there are a lot of homeless dogs out in the street either eating out of trash cans or sleeping under bridges. It makes me feel upset because most of those dogs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Impact Color Associations Have on Gender Stereotypes intro Surely it is common knowledge nowadays that pink is the colour for girls and blue is the colour for boys, but the real question is, why? How did the colour pink gain its label as a girls colour? And why is blue recognised today as a boys colour? Why have these particular colours become so gender specific? Do these gender normal behaviours reflect some built in biological difference between the sexes or did culture somehow dictate the gender preferences? Are they culturally manufactured? Have we as a modern society constructed this problematic gender identity through the use of advertising and marketing? Despite supposedly living in a modern day era where the efforts are being made to promote gender equality; the stereotyping of gender still remains such a social problem, it is still evident that there is still a major gender divide when it comes to little girls and boys. Throughout this report I will examine the impact that colour associations have on gender stereotyping and how the environments we artificially create add to this establishment of stereotypical beliefs. I will examine how contemporary culture such as media and advertisement contributed to this into creating these superficial connotations? A view from (Bodenhausen & Macrae, 1998; Macrae & Bodenhausen, 2000), the stereotypes themselves originate in specific beliefs about the sexes that are culturally specified. In 1920 Robert Michel created a painting named "Ship", which it contained many visual elements such as cool and warm colors curvilinear geometric figures. First of all, Michel shows the viewer a lot of curvilinear lines meaning a consisting of, bounded by, or characterized by a curved line, or a along a curved line of a set of coordinates determined by or determining a system of three orthogonal surfaces (definition from the internet). Geometric meaning, a set of points or vertices lines connecting the points in a closed chain, as well as the resulting interior points. Such shapes are called polygons and include triangles, squares, and pentagons (definition from the internet). And irregular shapes meaning polygon that does not have all sides equal and all angles equal. A polygon is "regular" only when all angles are equal and all sides are equal, otherwise it is irregular (definition from the internet). He also adds warm, cool and intensity colors to catch the viewer attention. The person analyzing the painting really has to pay very close attention to Micheles art work. Although there is no sure way to fully tell how we actually perceive color, there are two theories that seek to explain so. One is the trichromatic and the other opponent–process. Whereas one theory lacks in explaining a key problem the other succeeds, which is the case of the trichromatic theory and afterimages. Although the trichromatic theory does not explain the phenomenon of afterimages, of the two theories, the trichromatic one best explains how we see color. Firstly, the trichromatic theory explains that there are three types of cones red, green, and blue. City of God is no exception to this, it utilizes color and light to the fullest extent to express the evolution of deterioration throughout three decades in a Brazilian slum. Politics and society who is not present to witness poverty firsthand can often treat it as a black and white situation, often talking about it in different lights. Brazilian culture is no strange to this alienation of poverty. However, City of God is almost humble in the way it pairs color and lighting to the situation of the slum. There are times where it seems too bright and colorful for anything to go wrong while other times it is so dark that not even the wounds of others can be seen. The motion picture begins in a desolate fashion. Colors which are traditionally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 31. The Slave Ship Turner Summary The Slave Ship The artwork that I chose was The Slave Ship by J.M.W. Turner. This was a piece made with oil on canvas, made in 1840. The subject includes a slave ship on the ocean with a storm coming. Some objects in this painting are a ship, raging ocean, birds, and bodies in the ocean. The Slave Ship was created during the romantic era. One quality that shows the piece is from the romantic era is that he displays humans as helpless to nature. Turner uses dark reds, grays, blues, and yellows to convey despair and hardship. He did a great job of showing that nature is superior to humans by his proportion of the slave ship. The ship is small and engulfed in waves showing that even though humans may be selfish, nature will always have a power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This book described an incident in which the captain on a ship with slaves didn't want to loose money from the slaves that were dead and dying. To prevent the money loss, he had the sick and dead slaves thrown into the ocean. () This book gave Turner all the motivation to create the The Slave Ship. The meaning that I got out of the piece was that humans try to control things, when in the end we are helpless. I got this from the piece by the slave ship throwing slaves overboard, which shows what humans were trying to control. The storm symbolizes that things like nature we can't control even if we wanted to. I personally relate to this piece by sometimes I try to control things that I can't, and I should just let it go. Some symbolism shown throughout this piece is through the storm coming on the ship. This symbolizes the decrease of slavery that is coming their way. I think The Slave Ship has intrinsic value because the piece is beautiful, and it has a profound meaning. Created in the romantic era shows that it has a deeper meaning, and this piece could be used to persuade people to not support slavery. Creating your own meaning, shows that this piece is important, and has value. I think that the piece successfully conveys its meaning by making you think about how poorly the slaves were treated. Also, having nature overtaking the ship makes this a romantic piece. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Essay on Using Semiotics for Branding In today's world an individual is bombarded with brands from companies all around the world. These companies start with an idea and most of those ideas develop into a brand. Brands rely on the use of semiotics, "the science of signs" (Ryan and Conover 25), to relate to consumers or interpreters. They also relay on the connotation and denotation of the signs as well as the colors being used. When it comes to the entire package of a marketing plan and branding a company or product, graphic designers need to look at how to create the brand from a visually and culturally pleasing aspect. A brand is mostly based on a semiotic design that uses a trademark image and colors that relate to a group in a cultural setting. When it comes to branding, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many strategies that graphic designers and marketing directors use to create a logo for a company in order to form a brand. One logo strategy is to create an image that is familiar to individuals even if it's an image that has never been seen before. Subjective familiarity is the "perception or feeling of familiarity, whether or not it is based on previous exposure" (Henderson and Cote 17). A critical finding in logo strategy is that cultures are homogenous in their response to design. "Gestalt psychology suggests that "good design is determined by culturally held beliefs" (Henderson and Cote 18). It may be difficult for an individual from an outside culture to understand a specific design. In one culture, the meaning of a sign can be completely opposite of the culture in which it is used, i.e. the use of the thumbs up signal. In graphic design, semantics and pragmatics play an integral role in the development of a logo. According to Steven Skaggs, "semantics investigates meaning, or more properly, the relationship between the sign and its referents as interpreted.... Pragmatics studies the relationship between semiosis and the interpreter, or interpreting group" (37). This means that an image may be interpreted differently by one individual. This is usually based upon the person's background and/or culture as well as their physiological demographic. Skaggs believes that a design can have a denotation when it is interpreted narrowly in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Light waves have a range of wavelengths. A wavelength is the distance between any point on one wave and the corresponding point on the next wave. Different wavelengths of light appear to us as different colors. Light that contains all wavelengths in the same proportions as sunlight appears white. See LIGHT. When a beam of sunlight passes through a specially shaped glass object called a prism, the rays of different wavelengths are bent at different angles. The bending breaks up the sunlight into a beautiful band of colors. This band contains all the colors of the rainbow and is called the visible spectrum. At one end of the spectrum, the light appears as violet. It consists of the shortest wavelengths of light that we can see. Farther along the spectrum, the light has increasingly longer wavelengths. It appears as blue, green, yellow, orange, and red, each shading into its neighboring colors in the spectrum. The longest wavelengths of light that we can see appear deep red in color. Some descriptions of the spectrum also mention the color indigo, which is closely related to blue, between violet and blue. Light waves are a form of electromagnetic waves, which consist of patterns of electric and magnetic energy. The visible spectrum is only a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum–the ... • 34. Georgia O'Keeffe Essay Georgia O'Keeffe "The meaning of a word – to me – is not as exact as the meaning of a color. Colors and shapes make a more definite statement than words. I write this because such odd things have been done about me with words. I have often been told what to paint. I am often amazed at the spoken and written word telling me what I have painted. I make this effort because no one else can know how my paintings happen. Where I was born and where and how I have lived is unimportant. It is what I have done with where I have been that should be of interest." Georgia O'Keeffe Georgia O'Keeffe is one of the most influential artists there is today. The size of the bloom relative to a human really reflected the relative importance of nature and mankind in the artist's eyes. Georgia O'Keeffe painted everything from lilies, jonquils, daisies, irises, sweet peas, morning glories, poppies, forget–me–nots, marigolds, poinsettias, orchids, sunflowers, petunias, marigolds, and many more were reborn in her paintings. O'Keeffe wasn't happy because people looked at her paintings and tried to see them in the way of a female. She said, "Well––I made you take time to look at what I saw and when you took time to really notice my flower you hung all your own associations with flowers on my flower and you write about my flower as if I think and see what you think and see of the flower––and I don't." She did not like the idea that people thought she painted the way she did because she was a female. She painted that way because that was how she saw things. The flowers that she created epitomize her growth, success, magnetism, and energy at that certain stage in her career. Her choice to paint these flowers was influenced by her early training, natural attraction to flowers, and the idea of something fresh and fragile. Close observations of O'Keeffe's flowers show that she never really pursued the realistic approach. She didn't paint every petal and detail. Instead she gave her flowers a life of their own, and expression that changed significantly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Color Perception: The Trichromatic Theory Of Color Perception of Color Perception is being consciously aware (Goldstein, 2014, p. 8). Color is used in our everyday life and is usually taken for granted. Many people don't understand how important color is by differentiating between your red top and your yellow one, or knowing if you should stop on a red light of drive on a green light. Being born with a color deficiency is easier because you don't know what color is rather than losing the ability to see color after an accident. In our Sensation and Perception book, they gave an example about and artist that lost his ability to perceive color leading him to form depression. The artist eventually coped with his disability and started painting black and white portraits (Goldstein, 2014, p. 200). An experiment was done by James W. Tanaka and L.M. Presnell (1999) where they asked observers to identify objects with their normal color or with a color change. Observers identified the objects with their original color more precisely than the objects that were changed. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The theory was a result of color–matching experiments, in which observers adjusted the amounts of three different wavelengths of light mixed together in a "comparison field" until the color matched the color of a single wavelength in a "test field". The trichromatic theory of color vision states that in order to perceive color, you need three different receptor mechanisms or three primary colors. If a human were to be given only two primaries or wavelengths, then some colors cannot be matched. The theory was then became the Young–Helmholtz theory of color vision stating that the vision of color depends on three receptor mechanisms but with different spectral sensitivities. This means that perception of color is stimulated by different wavelength and to different degrees. (Goldstein, 2014, p. 204) (PSY 343– color, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Such objects as traffic lights and neon signs appear colored because the light that they give off contains a limited range of wavelengths. However, most objects appear colored because their chemical structure absorbs certain wavelengths of light and reflects others. When sunlight strikes a carrot, for example, molecules in the carrot absorb most of the light of short wavelengths. Most of the light of longer wavelengths is reflected. When these longer wavelengths of light reach our eyes, the carrot appears orange. An object that reflects most of the light of all wavelengths in nearly equal amounts appears white. An object that absorbs most of the light of all wavelengths in nearly equal amounts appears black. How we see color The roles of the eyes and brain. Our ability to see color depends on many highly complicated workings of the eyes and brain. When we look at an object, light coming from the object enters our eyes. Each eye focuses the light, forming an image of the object on the retina. The retina is a thin layer of tissue covering the back and sides of the inside of the eyeball. It contains millions of light– sensitive cells. These cells absorb most of the light that falls on the retina and convert the light to electrical signals. These electrical signals then travel through nerves to the brain. The retina has two main types of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Night Time Tour The beach umbrella, the towels, the chairs, and then the cooler. In the backseat, I watched as my family finished packing the van with the assortment of items we had brought with us to the beach. The van was the family tank, a roaring piece of machinery that somehow seemed to make the passenger feel secure even with the alarming grumbling of the engine. The back of the van was filled and now, on this late summer day, we were taking our leave from the shore. I looked back once more at the sea where the sunset splattered colors of red and orange on the rough surface of blue and violet. Although the boardwalk was lively with smells of French fries and the cries of seagulls, I nuzzled into the car seat and waited for the Night Time Tour to begin. I absolutely loved long car rides; it was the perfect excuse to let idle thoughts roam and to isolate myself from the world. I only observed the outside through the window of the family van, my personal theater. The images that flashed hastily before the window was like a film strip; only revealing the pictures of the scenes for only a moment. This car ride was especially exquisite, for the hours it took to reach our destination allowed my imagination to mingle with the fleeting world which were only separated by a window. The sun dimmed to a warm orange and the first act of the Night Time Tour began. My family had just driven out of the gradually bustling city and was on the highway. • 38. Hart Benton Section 3 Summary In this paper we will be discussing a mural by Thomas Hart Benton titled, A Social History of the State of Missouri. This mural is located in the Missouri state capitol in Jefferson City Missouri. This mural is located in the House Lounge of the capitol building. The mural covers 3 of the walls with the exception of the West wall full of windows. The room measured 25 feet wide, 55 feet long, and 14feet 2 inches high. Benton used egg tempera for the mural and beeswax and varnish to protect it. In 1935, House Bill 536, Section 87B became law, appropriating $16,000 for Benton to paint a mural in the House Lounge of the Missouri State Capitol. The mural was completed in 1936. Description: As you walk into the House Lounge you are facing the west wall that is a row of windows. Benton painted corn stalks, railroad lines, electrical line towers, and smoke from the train between the windows. As you walk to the right you are facing the North wall it showcases Missouri's early history. It is split into five sections and door separating them. There are three larger sections and two smaller ones. In the first large panel to the left of the door you see an Indian trading with a white man, a white man putting a pack on a mule, two white men loading/unloading a barrel from/on a wagon, three men shooting guns, and a white man plowing land with an ox. Above the door is a mural of a Black man holding a fish and he is looking down on a small white boy with a steam boat in the background. On ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this art piece, you can see a figure who seems to be holding someone in their arms, and it captivates you and catches your attention because of the sheer display of emotions that you get while looking at it. When I went to the museum this is the first painting that caught my eye all because I could sense the feeling that the artist was trying to convey to her audience. To me, I feel that the artist is trying to say how a mother will protect her children and/or family at any cost, but also that there is a dark and painful past to what happens to women and children. The texture is implied because you feel like you can almost feel how their skin would feel or what it would feel like if you were to just run your hand down the body of the artist's main focal point. I'm not really too confident on the lines of this painting only because there are so many ways that she did her brush strokes, you have some thin lines but you also have thicker and darker lines that give off a brooding feeling or almost depressive feel. Her color choices were spot on because of the browns, grays, blue tinges, and off white colors, it makes you feel semi–depressed but only so that you can get a feel of how other women may be feeling somewhere in the world.
