Black Narrows Descriptive Writing
The Black Narrows. It is at the far south end of the city, underground in the old urban where humans use to live before the Angles built the Sky
Cities. It's only in the past fifty years that humans have actually been living above the ground. A lot of people still live there. Mostly people who
can't get jobs or want to get away from the Order. Demons never go down there, not even Law Enforcement. It is a dangerous place for both demons
and humans alike. One stupid mistake and you'd be dead or worse. It's also the perfect place to find all the information you need on any demon. It's a
creepy place with strangely dressed people...well stranger than normal...and fatherless families wandering about. Everything is dimly lit with sickly
green lights... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I just want to get out of here. This place really gives me the creeps and every moment I spend here, is another moment, Daemn is free and escaping
farther and farther from my grasp. I can't let him just get away with Kallua's murder. I just can't! "Alright, alright, you don't have to be snappy
about it." The old hacker immediately begins typing away on the keyboard, his eyes flicking from one bright screen to the next. I wait patiently as
the man works away, but as seconds turn into minutes and those minutes turn into almost an hour, I start to worry. What if this demon, Daemn isn't
in the system? What if he's just some rogue demon who just goes around stealing from humans? I quickly push those thoughts away. Nothing was
stolen when they attacked, meaning he can't be a rogue, also meaning he has to be in the system. He looked too clean and too powerful to not be in
the system. How hard is it to search for him with all the description I had given the old man? Unless my information is wrong. Could it be? Could
my sister's murderer be from a completely different city? Could he wear a disguise when he raids humans? Could it be that all this is for

A Single Story Analysis
When Adichie refers to a single story, she is describing that a person or group of people may be disillusioned due to their lack of exposure to other
perspectives and ideas. For instance, Adichie states that when she read American and European storybooks as a child, all of the characters were of the
white race and exemplified white characteristics, leading to an ignorant and close–minded depiction of the world. Moreover, when Adichie began
reading African literature, she found that "people like me, girls with skin the color of chocolate, whose kinky hair could not form ponytails, could also
exist in literature"(Adichie 1:07). This illustrates that in both African and European literature, characterization is limited to the demographics known to
the writers, the story is restricted based on one's viewpoint. Furthermore, the danger in simply reading or writing a single story is that over time, a
person, or group of people, can become bias due to their lack of exposure to cultural and ethnical diversity. For example, Adichie describes that
when she met the family of Fide, her houseboy, and saw that one of Fide's brothers had woven a beautiful basket she was taken aback because "it
had become impossible for me to see them as anything else but poor. Their poverty was my single story for them"(Adichie 3:43). This seemingly
minor misconception exposes Adichie to the dangers of following "a single story", a reality check which changed her perception of the world.
Furthermore, the

Molly's Narrow: A Narrative Fiction
George, a little penguin boy went to Ireland one spring to visit his aunt, uncle and cousin Molly. Molly and George were the same age. "Hey
chick!" George greeted her in his usual greeting. Culturally, he was a much laid back boy and often didn't pay much attention to the cultural
aspects of society. Molly's eyes opened wide and she looked all around, "Where? Where is it?" George shrugged, giving her a puzzled look. Molly
walked around as if looking for something. George had no idea what she was looking for. Suddenly, his eyes opened wide, "Molly, look out!" He
shouted. Molly had wondered into the sidewalk, right into a biker's path. With a cry of alarm, she threw herself out of the way, only to land in a
puddle. George doubled over in laughter. His cousin was so funny! Molly made a face as she tried to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

foot and walked off. "Molly wait," George said, running after her. "I didn't meant it that way." Molly glared at him from over her shoulder, "Then
why do you keep saying chick, when there isn't a chick anywhere around?" George looked at her confused, "Sure there was, you." Molly looked
even angrier, "I'm no chick!" "But you are a girl, aren't you?" George asked, running after her again. "A chick is a baby chicken, I'm a girl and
calling me that is very mean." Molly said without stopping, or looking at him. George's eyes widened, "In America boys often call girls chick in

that, is mean, rude and very inappropriate." Molly explained, finally stopping and looking at

Linda Gregerson's Narrow Flame
Witnessing the death of anything can be emotionally overwhelming, especially that of a big, beautiful beast, and Linda Gregerson makes these feelings
known. In Gregerson's "Narrow Flame," she depicts the sight and feelings of euthanizing a horse. Through imagery and repetition, Gregerson creates
heartbreak yet peacefulness in the reader.
Throughout the entire poem, there is an abundance of imagery that presents both heartbreak and peacefulness in these last moments of life.
Gregerson opens the poem by depicting a "greening earth" with a sun at its "zenith." This image of a lively day with green fields of grass and a
strong sun gives the reader a sense of harmony and sets the calm tone of the poem. All of a sudden, this quiet land turns on the ... Show more content on

The first time the words are used, they are whispered by the girl directly in the horse's "ear" while his "hip begins to [give] way." In this instance,
they bring comfort to the horse who does not understand why his legs are failing to support him. He needs her touch and words to bring him ease.
This feeling leads to the second usage. We seem to enter the horse's mind as he reminisces when good boy brought "sweet" "grazing" and "good boy"
meant good things. Even the horse is seeing this terrible twist in nature that was once so great, but now everything is upside down where the alive
grass brings death and good boy is simply reassurance. The last time these words are muttered bring a sense of life back to the now dead horse. As
the girl sits, "unbuckling the halter," she brings his head to her lap for one last whiff of his life, and this time mutters good boy not for his sake, but
hers. The contradicting uses of good boy bring contradicting emotions. Because of the repetition of this phrase with three different connotations, we are
surrounded by the feelings of peacefulness, heartbreak, and everything in

Narrows Bridge Failure
Executive Summary
The report debates the Tacoma narrows bridge failure and the different theories of how it came about, using information about what type of bridge it
is and the forces acting on it before and during the collapse. It also discusses ways in which the failure could have been avoided, from changes in the
design to modifications to the bridge after its construction.
(Blaschke 2015)
Introduction
Tacoma Narrows Bridge was opened to the public on July 1st 1940 after being in construction for 2 years. The structure was built 5,939–foot–long with
a span of 2800 feet in order to bridge the gap between Tacoma and Gig Harbour in the state of Washington, USA. It became known as "Galloping
Gertie" due to the fact that the bridge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tension in the suspenders transfers to the cables which run horizontally between the two far–flung anchorages, through which the tensional forces
pass in to the ground and are dissipated. (Bagga 2014).
Compression is the force pressing a material and compacting it and acts on the towers of a suspension bridge, this force is created from the weight of
the towers and the load on the bridge. Compression forces will also act on the surface of the bridge deck as when a load is applied it will have some
flexibility and bend, it will then travel up the cables, ropes or chains to transfer the compression forces to the towers. The towers then dissipate the
compression directly into the earth. (Bagga 2014).
Suspension bridges usually experience torsional forces during very windy conditions where there are high wind speeds, this can create a twisting force
causing the deck to rotate resulting in the bridge experiencing shear stress. (Bagga

Narrow-Spectrum Antibiotics
Science Fair Research
There are many different types of antibiotics made for a lot of different purposes. Narrow–spectrum antibiotics only work for a few organisms, whereas
broad–spectrum work for many organisms. However, there are many similarities and differences between the two. Broad–spectrum antibiotics are made
for multiple types of bacteria and are more general towards what they treat. They are used sometimes to treat patients that could have one of many
bacteria. They are also used instead of narrow–spectrum antibiotics when patients must start treatment before doctors figure out what bacteria they
have. They might also use this if there are multiple types of bacteria in a patient that can harm them in multiple ways.
In the case ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As mentioned above, bacteria can build resistance in those ways by changing their genetics a small amount. When they make more vitamins than
necessary, it changes the genetics of the bacteria. Also, when they only allow molecules in a certain way, it is also changing their cell wall and
genetics. When they let the antibiotic build up and then remove it altogether it is changing the genetics as well. They change their genetics and still
carry out their functions in different ways.
There are, however, certain bacteria that are resistant towards antibiotics without changing their genes. Certain bacteria are resistant to some antibiotics
naturally, and this happens in the case that the bacteria are too strong to kill with a weak antibiotic. Whenever this occurs, patients will normally be
prescribed a more powerful antibiotic. This also happens when the colonies of bacteria are too large in comparison to the amount of antibiotic, and
taking a higher dosage of antibiotic can help this.
There are many similarities and differences between gram positive and gram–negative bacteria. Gram–positive bacteria are weaker than gram–negative
bacteria when exposed to

Theme Of A Narrow Fellow In The Grass By Emily Dickinson

ENG 102–02
23 October 2014
Happiness is a Mystery Happiness is found everywhere throughout the entire world. Happiness is within everybody emotionally because it keeps
someone in a good mood. It is important to stay happy because that person can be able to live longer. In addition, when someone can think of
happiness, they can think of nature. However, when comparing, "Nature" is what we see" and "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass" by Emily Dickinson
(650–652), she symbolize here emotion towards nature mysteriously, theoretically, and factual. First, Dickinson describes nature mysteriously. The
narrator is explaining about what a person can see outside in the world. In the beginning of the story, the poem explains about her love and gratitude
towards nature. Dickinson continues the poem by picking out certain things. "The Hill–––the Afternoon, / Squirrel–––Eclipse–––the Bumble Bee,
/ The Bobolink–––the Sea, / Thunder––– the Cricket" (650). Therefore, she sees a hill, a bobolink, a squirrel, and a bumblebee. Later, she explains that,
"Nature––– is what we hear" (650). Clearly, she hears a bobolink, which is a bird, the sea, Thunder and lightning, and a cricket making noises. Her ...

Dickinson goes in detail that she is seeing creature living in the grass, but she does not know what it is. She begins the story with, "A Narrow Fellow

"You may have met Him–––did you not, / His notice sudden is–––" (651). It's asking someone if they have met the snake and to see if the snake saw
the narrator or not. For instance, a person can see a snake sometimes outside. If it blends in the grass, there is no–telling what the snake might do the

Tacoma Narrows Bridge Essay
Tacoma Narrows Bridge
One of the most influential engineering discoveries in the past century was the ill–fated Tacoma Narrows Bridge. "Galloping Gertie" as she was known
to local residents, the massive Washington state suspension bridge shook, rattled and rolled its way into the history books. Legendary in its time, the
Tacoma Narrows Bridge held many records and drew tourists from around the world in its short life. However, the famous bridge is not known for its
creative engineering or speedy construction, unfortunately the bridge was destined to fail. That failure in turn changed the way every building is

After years of deliberation, state officials decided that the time had come to create the Washington Toll Authority in order to save the necessary
funding to build a bridge to span the Tacoma Narrows. In 1937 the project had begun, and officials sought a bridge designer to get their plan moving.
Leon Moisseiff was commissioned in 1937 to build a bridge that would rival the length of the Brooklyn Bridge yet remain elegant and appealing to
residents. He created a perfect design and the project moved in search of contractors. From 1938 to 1940, continuous work constructed a suspension
bridge a mile–long. At the time, the Tacoma Narrows was the third largest bridge in the world. The design was simple yet slender, with two 420 foot
tall towers and a pair of suspension cables supporting the road. The towers were reinforced carbon steel to support the lengthy bridge. The concrete
deck was 39–feet wide and 8–feet deep. The girders were made of carbon steel anchored in giant blocks of concrete. The design was narrower, lighter
and more flexible than any other bridge in the world. The Seattle Toll Authority expected to Leon's design to handle 60,000 vehicles a day and increase
travel to Olympic Peninsula.
The one mistake that caused this entire bridge to fail was a last minute change made by the contractors early on in the build.

Jacobs bravely tells her story about escaping slavery with her children. She was the first writer to show the grisly details of slavery and discuss sexual
abuse. Jacobs criticizes herself for getting pregnant to get out of the sexual abusive relationship of her slave owner by saying "I felt as if I was

(dictionary.com). Due to the fact that suspension bridges are not completely supported throughout the length of the bridge, past bridges were unsafe. For
example, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was a suspension bridge opened on July 1st, 1940 (Mark Ketchum). This bridge marked a huge point in
suspension bridge safety and engineering, because in collapsed approximately four months after it was opened (Parsons). The collapse caused such a
shock, that suspension ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sometimes the wind would not be perpendicular, in which the oscillation of the bridge was less, but there was still some oscillation. On
November 7th, 1940, the Tacoma Bridge collapsed because the oscillation of the bridge became extreme. The oscillation of the bridge was caused
by a wind speed of 42 mph (HistoryLink.org). After, approximately, an hour of a corkscrew like motion, the bridge collapsed into Puget Sound.
This marked a huge turning point in the design of suspension bridges from that point in time to current time. Initially, suspension bridges before
1940 were made of piers, towers, wires, anchorages, and roadways. Piers were the main foundation for the suspension bridges. There usually were
two of them, which were made out of cement and were entrenched in ground underneath the body of water that the bridge was spanned across.
Towers were built on top of the piers to provide a means of connection for the roadways and wires. Wires were connected to the towers, roadways,
and anchorages to provide tension support for the weight of the bridge. The anchorages were large cement platforms that were planted into the
ground on either side of the land so that the wires could be connected to it. Lastly, the roadways were the main point of the suspension bridge. They
usually were wide enough to provide four lanes of traffic and stretched from one side of the bridge to the other. This was the basic design of the
suspension bridges

Narrow Framing
The most common of the four "villains" of decision making would be "narrow framing." Narrow framing is an obstacle that stands in the way of
good decisions by limiting the amount of options. In decision making, a narrow frame or a restricted set of options is a missed opportunity at
possibly better choices that could be generated to increase choices. Naturally, I go back to my time as both a teacher and principal and can see how
invested educators are in their work and how easy it is to overlook or miss the obvious. The enormous amount of pressure on educators in Kentucky has
forced teachers to be nearly automated in their behaviors, actions and strategies that are implemented in the classroom. Society sometimes questions

Having additional eyes view the proposed problem allows evidence to be collected in conjunction with the next steps towards a resolution. The
instructional rounds process allows for the additional data outside the obvious to be collected and analyzed to provide multiple options for a school
to move forward. The final step of instructional rounds is referred to as "next steps." This resembles the "multitrack alternatives" that allows several
options to be proposed and considered simultaneously and to determine which one is best to address the problem of practice. Teachers may explore
different angles or paths to determine what works over what is a barrier. Collecting evidence towards multiple options is

The Narrow Road To The Deep North
In the works we have read, the one that sticks out the most would be Basho's story, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, a Japanese story that depicts
culture. Culture defines who people are. The haikus used throughout this story devoted a great of amount of attention to the natural world as well as
human nature. Basho creates such power through his poetry. Individualism is depicted in the story. The practice of Zen Buddhism depicts an aspect of
Japanese culture in man searching for the truth. During his journey the experience helped him in providing a clearer understanding of his purpose. The
decision by the individual reflects self–reliance and personal dependence.

A Comparison Of Kusamakura And Narrow Road To The Interior
Nature is inspiring and sometimes we forget the healing it brings to the soul. The novels "Kusamakura" and "Narrow Road to the Interior" deal in
great part with Zen Buddhism, likewise with nature and how is it part of everyday life. Even though is difficult to achieve complete peacefulness, nature
helps us step outside our shells, our drama, our mental dilemmas and become capable of appreciating life on life terms. Nature is in all our
surroundings, it even appears in dreams and both novels do a great job captivating natures beauty in poems. Some of these poems are haiku poems that
contain originally 17 syllables. They are short poems that capture a big piece of beauty, of nature through time.

the person's soul. Certainly, this experience might pass to others as an empty part of their life, but in reality is when we are most content and

Richard Flanagan The Narrow Road
Flanagan represents love as a powerful force that can drive and shape behaviour of others; for it is through love and admiration that society can shape
and define people. I am shown how love can both be a power for greatness, but also a power for evil and destruction, "the fantasy of love is that it is
force for good but it can also be a terrible force for destruction and for sadness as well." (Flanagan, "Richard Flanagan's") Flanagan's words on the
power of love and the duality of love for both good and evil is highlighted through the life of Dorrigo Evans and also through Nakamura's struggle on
the railway. As Romy Ash of The Guardian said "the capabilities of the human spirit: for the creation of both exquisite beauty... and for the creation of
terror, the atrocity that was the Burma death railway" (Ash...), the novel shows the way in which great beauty and horror can both be created by
society and fostered and developed in people. It is through his love for his men that Dorrigo can become something ... Show more content on

becoming something worthy of the title hero. However these deeds of selflessness, which he does even though he wants to be selfish highlight how
even in his own flawed way he is still a hero:
Why? Dorrigo Evans thought. Why am I saying I don't want the steak? He so desperately wanted to eat it, and the men wanted him to have it, as a
tribute of sorts. And yet, much as he knew no one would have begrudged him the meat, he also understood the steak to be a test that demanded
witnesses, a test he had to pass, a test that would become a necessary story for them all. (Flanagan, "The Narrow Road",

Have you ever had that feeling of deja vu? You hear an old song and connect to it. You walk down a certain street and it seems familiar. You meet

Analysis Of Whittier Narrows Nature Center
Whittier Narrows Nature Center Conservation of our natural environment is of vital importance. Now, people should preserve nature and protect it. In
addition, it is imperative to realize that, the survival of humanity and many creatures depends mainly on the state of the environment around us. As
matter of fact, science place a relevant part in the conservation of the planet. Moreover, Physical geography is the study of all natural forms and
processes in an environment, also, the field covers the cause and effect of human activity on the environment. "Geographers study the location and
distribution of things–tangible things such as rainfall, mountains, and trees" (Hess, Darrel, Physical Geography, Third California Edition) For this
reason, I decided to visit The Whittier Narrows Center. It is one of the many centers that have been established in US to conserve the most crucial
asset that human beings possess, the environment. Those who study geography realize that it is important to conduct a thorough study on the center
and its activities to identify what makes it such a unique site. This project is providing an insight of the center by describing its natural settings per
Physical Geography. The paper will focus on the center's location, geographical settings, weather, climate, plants and trees, soils, wildlife, terrain, local
history and a site map. The Whittier Narrows Nature Center is located at 1000 Durfee Road South El Monte, Ca 91733. Its coordinates are

Dylan used to love Halloween. It was the only time of the year you could dress up as a scary monster and demand candy from your neighbors. What
kid wouldn't love that! It eventually wore off on him, though. By the time he was eleven, playing dress up and going for candy just seemed too

brandishing it. Jason screamed and ran off, the candy forgotten. After returning his friend's costume back to him, Dylan returned to his brother, who

The Collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Essay
The Collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is perhaps the most notorious failure in the world of engineering. It collapsed on November 7, 1940 just months after its
opening on July 1, 1940. It was designed by Leon Moisseiff and at its time it was the third largest suspension bridge in the world with a center span of
over half a mile long. The bridge was very narrow and sleek giving it a look of grace, but this design made it very flexible in the wind. Nicknamed the
"Galloping Gertie," because of its undulating behavior, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge drew the attention of motorists seeking a cheapthrill. Drivers felt
that they were driving on a roller coaster, as they would disappear from sight in the trough of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is shaped in a way to transfer weight to the towers and anchors with its tension (O'Connor, 1971, p. 372). Cables are made of high strength wires
spirally bound to form a rope (O'Connor, 1971, p. 372). Vertical cable suspenders that are fastened to the main cables hang the actual roadway.
Stiffening girders and trusses are along the side of the bridge to distribute concentrated loads and help to keep the motion of the bridge at a minimum
(Troitsky, 1994, p115).
The basic design of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge itself was a suspension bridge with a center span of 2800 feet and two side spans of one 1100 feet
(Farquharson, 1950, p. 17). Its two lane, reinforced concrete roadway was twenty–six feet wide with two 5 foot, 9 inch sidewalks (Farquharson, 1950,
p. 19). Overall the superstructure was 5939 feet, including the suspension structures, approach spans and anchorages (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19).
Anchorages were made of solid concrete and were fifty feet by 170 feet and were fifty feet high (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). The main towers which
the cables saddle were 425 feet in height and with a spacing of thirty–nine feet at the top and fifty feet at the bottom (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). Each
cable consisted of nineteen strands of galvanized wire and totaled a diameter of seventeen inches. The design of the bridge may sound rather large and
structurally stable but as mentioned before the bridge was designed to be very sleek looking. By

Tacoma Narrows Bridge Tragedies
The masterful works of art, known as bridges, are some of the most complex structures people design. With absurdly complicated bridges, like the
Lucky Knot Bridge in China, to an everyday bridge that you would see in North Carolina, engineers everywhere must go through the same process of
making sure these bridges are safe and secure. The dedication and amount of hours that go into deciding the structure, what addons will overall make
the bridge itself stronger, and what makes these bridges economical checks to see that they are universally safe, and to hopefully prevent another

1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was designed for a wind speed of 100 miles per hour and a static wind pressure of 30 pounds–force per square foot but
unfortunately the bridge failed at a wind speed of less than half and a static wind pressure of one–sixth (Delatte, 2009). This phenomenon raises a big
question mark on how this is possible. At first, resonance was suspected to be the main cause of the bridge failure (The New York Times, 1940).
After some proper research and thorough investigations by engineers, they came up with several theories on how did the bridge collapse. The
primary cause of the collapse lies in the general proportions of the bridge and the type of stiffening girders and floor. The ratio of the width of the
bridge to the length of the main span was so much smaller and the vertical stiffness was so much less than those of previously constructed bridges that...

Ammann, Theodore von Karman, and Glenn B. Woodruff to investigate the case of the 1940 Tacoma Bridge collapse (Scott, 2001). Theodore von
Karman, a famous aeronautical engineer, claimed that the motion that was seen on the day when the bridge was brought into pieces was due to
vortices. When an air flow passes a bluff body, it created the periodic shedding of air vortices, which created the von Karman Vortex Street (Delatte,
2009). As a consequence, the bridge would move towards the low–pressure zone, in a wavering development called vortex–induced vibration. On the
off chance that the recurrence of vortex shedding matches the regular recurrence of the scaffold, then the structure reverberates and motions may get to
be distinctly self–maintaining. This wake reinforced the oscillations that were present and caused the centre span to violently twist until the bridge
collapsed (Von KГЎrmГЎn, 1963). Experimental results that was deduced in a 1942 report confirms that the motions were a result of vortex shedding

Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington State had taken three years to complete its building process. It experienced a terrible fate as it collapsed
only four months after final construction. During its short existence only vertical vibrations of the bridge were noticed, and the bridge became
famously known as "Galloping Gertie" due to the swaying of the roadway under high wind conditions. A positive correlation was observed between the
wind's speeds and the bridge's vibrations in certain tests, yet contradictory results are also in existence which prove no correlation between the two.
Tourists who paid the bridge toll to venture across the swaying bridge, encompassed by seemingly disappearing vehicles, often considered this bridge a

As a replacement for the ferry system in place to venture across the Tacoma Narrows, the 2,800 feet long bridge was created. However, in an attempt
to make the bridge more cost–effective, it was built with an unusual design for a suspension bridge– an extremely thin frame of only thirty–nine feet.
This created sufficient space for only two lanes on the roadway. Originally, the bridge was supposed to be made more sturdy through the addition of
trusses, yet there were inadequate funds. As a result, a cheaper alternative– 8–foot girders– were added on. They were included on the entire expanse of
the bridge. However, there was not a sufficient stiffening effect created on the bridge by these girders. There was not enough research in existence on
aerodynamic stability for suspension bridges, and wind tunneling/aerodynamic lift was thus not properly accounted

Analysis : ' Enter Through The Narrow Gate '
David Gu
Mr. Robert Brinlee
3rd Period Honors English III

Against the Current
It reads in Matthew 7:13–14, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter
through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." When pressed to make a decision, one is often
inclined to walk the path that one's peers are taking. More often times than not, we look for the easy way out. To merge with the popular outlook,
much like the river current that flows downstream to its riverbed, all that is required of us is the immersion of ourselves within its undulation and be
washed along. Choosing to be pushed by this current forces us to give up our ideas and substitute it for the common consensus. We realize that
frequently our morals depart from the "common" value system, but we deny ourselves the urge to express such social commentary fearing judgement,
exclusion, or even persecution by the masses. Few men choose to fight the upstream battle. Fewer men are able to alter its course. No man however
can reverse the tide. The moral issues involving slavery and the post Emancipation racial discrimination in 19th century America serves as a perfect
example of such an upstream battle. Writer and rhetoric master Mark Twain sheds light on the topic of conflicting human principles in his work The
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, what many call "the Great American Novel".Twain

Narrow Views On The United States
Narrow Minds: Narrow Views
Contrary to what many people thing, the dramatic event that happened in New York on
September 11, 2001 when Muslim origin terrorist perpetuated the killing of innocent people in the United States was very devastating not just to
Americans but also to the rest of the world.
The world felt the consequences of this terrorist attack against America apart from condemning it because it was a horrible and inhumane event, but
also by America government official's racial profiling citizens of all nationalities that set foot into America territory. As citizens of the United
States, we are concerned about criminality undermining our society; drugs, terrorist attacks and violence are increasing in our communities. Although
crime is a serious problem in our society, government resources are limited and we live under a terrorist threat. However, racial profiling is not the
solution to reduce our social issues because it is unconstitutional, promotes distrust in government agencies, and prevents America from finding a more
inclusive solution.
Many people have different ideas of what constitutes Racial Profiling but, According to
Jody Feder, in "Racial Profiling: Legal and Constitutional Issues," " Racial profiling is the practice of targeting individuals for police or security
detention based on their race or ethnicity in the belief that certain minority groups are more likely to engage in unlawful behavior"(4).

The Narrow Escape: A Descriptive Account of the Black Narrows Underground (40

  • 1. Black Narrows Descriptive Writing The Black Narrows. It is at the far south end of the city, underground in the old urban where humans use to live before the Angles built the Sky Cities. It's only in the past fifty years that humans have actually been living above the ground. A lot of people still live there. Mostly people who can't get jobs or want to get away from the Order. Demons never go down there, not even Law Enforcement. It is a dangerous place for both demons and humans alike. One stupid mistake and you'd be dead or worse. It's also the perfect place to find all the information you need on any demon. It's a creepy place with strangely dressed people...well stranger than normal...and fatherless families wandering about. Everything is dimly lit with sickly green lights... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I just want to get out of here. This place really gives me the creeps and every moment I spend here, is another moment, Daemn is free and escaping farther and farther from my grasp. I can't let him just get away with Kallua's murder. I just can't! "Alright, alright, you don't have to be snappy about it." The old hacker immediately begins typing away on the keyboard, his eyes flicking from one bright screen to the next. I wait patiently as the man works away, but as seconds turn into minutes and those minutes turn into almost an hour, I start to worry. What if this demon, Daemn isn't in the system? What if he's just some rogue demon who just goes around stealing from humans? I quickly push those thoughts away. Nothing was stolen when they attacked, meaning he can't be a rogue, also meaning he has to be in the system. He looked too clean and too powerful to not be in the system. How hard is it to search for him with all the description I had given the old man? Unless my information is wrong. Could it be? Could my sister's murderer be from a completely different city? Could he wear a disguise when he raids humans? Could it be that all this is for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. A Single Story Analysis When Adichie refers to a single story, she is describing that a person or group of people may be disillusioned due to their lack of exposure to other perspectives and ideas. For instance, Adichie states that when she read American and European storybooks as a child, all of the characters were of the white race and exemplified white characteristics, leading to an ignorant and close–minded depiction of the world. Moreover, when Adichie began reading African literature, she found that "people like me, girls with skin the color of chocolate, whose kinky hair could not form ponytails, could also exist in literature"(Adichie 1:07). This illustrates that in both African and European literature, characterization is limited to the demographics known to the writers, the story is restricted based on one's viewpoint. Furthermore, the danger in simply reading or writing a single story is that over time, a person, or group of people, can become bias due to their lack of exposure to cultural and ethnical diversity. For example, Adichie describes that when she met the family of Fide, her houseboy, and saw that one of Fide's brothers had woven a beautiful basket she was taken aback because "it had become impossible for me to see them as anything else but poor. Their poverty was my single story for them"(Adichie 3:43). This seemingly minor misconception exposes Adichie to the dangers of following "a single story", a reality check which changed her perception of the world. Furthermore, the ... With the design which has lots of open and exposed spaces as well as the floor–to–ceiling glass windows and the modern comforts and fittings, plenty of natural light can penetrate into the room although they are compact and minimalist. • 4. Molly's Narrow: A Narrative Fiction George, a little penguin boy went to Ireland one spring to visit his aunt, uncle and cousin Molly. Molly and George were the same age. "Hey chick!" George greeted her in his usual greeting. Culturally, he was a much laid back boy and often didn't pay much attention to the cultural aspects of society. Molly's eyes opened wide and she looked all around, "Where? Where is it?" George shrugged, giving her a puzzled look. Molly walked around as if looking for something. George had no idea what she was looking for. Suddenly, his eyes opened wide, "Molly, look out!" He shouted. Molly had wondered into the sidewalk, right into a biker's path. With a cry of alarm, she threw herself out of the way, only to land in a puddle. George doubled over in laughter. His cousin was so funny! Molly made a face as she tried to... She sported a huge frown on is face as she asked, "You think you are so funny?" "Me? No, but you are," George said as his laughter turned to small giggles. Molly huffed, stumped her foot and walked off. "Molly wait," George said, running after her. "I didn't meant it that way." Molly glared at him from over her shoulder, "Then why do you keep saying chick, when there isn't a chick anywhere around?" George looked at her confused, "Sure there was, you." Molly looked even angrier, "I'm no chick!" "But you are a girl, aren't you?" George asked, running after her again. "A chick is a baby chicken, I'm a girl and calling me that is very mean." Molly said without stopping, or looking at him. George's eyes widened, "In America boys often call girls chick in form of a friendly name, or friendly greeting. I didn't know it would offend you like that." "Well, here in Ireland, you should never address a girl like that, is mean, rude and very inappropriate." Molly explained, finally stopping and looking at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Linda Gregerson's Narrow Flame Witnessing the death of anything can be emotionally overwhelming, especially that of a big, beautiful beast, and Linda Gregerson makes these feelings known. In Gregerson's "Narrow Flame," she depicts the sight and feelings of euthanizing a horse. Through imagery and repetition, Gregerson creates heartbreak yet peacefulness in the reader. Throughout the entire poem, there is an abundance of imagery that presents both heartbreak and peacefulness in these last moments of life. Gregerson opens the poem by depicting a "greening earth" with a sun at its "zenith." This image of a lively day with green fields of grass and a strong sun gives the reader a sense of harmony and sets the calm tone of the poem. All of a sudden, this quiet land turns on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first time the words are used, they are whispered by the girl directly in the horse's "ear" while his "hip begins to [give] way." In this instance, they bring comfort to the horse who does not understand why his legs are failing to support him. He needs her touch and words to bring him ease. This feeling leads to the second usage. We seem to enter the horse's mind as he reminisces when good boy brought "sweet" "grazing" and "good boy" meant good things. Even the horse is seeing this terrible twist in nature that was once so great, but now everything is upside down where the alive grass brings death and good boy is simply reassurance. The last time these words are muttered bring a sense of life back to the now dead horse. As the girl sits, "unbuckling the halter," she brings his head to her lap for one last whiff of his life, and this time mutters good boy not for his sake, but hers. The contradicting uses of good boy bring contradicting emotions. Because of the repetition of this phrase with three different connotations, we are surrounded by the feelings of peacefulness, heartbreak, and everything in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Narrows Bridge Failure Executive Summary The report debates the Tacoma narrows bridge failure and the different theories of how it came about, using information about what type of bridge it is and the forces acting on it before and during the collapse. It also discusses ways in which the failure could have been avoided, from changes in the design to modifications to the bridge after its construction. (Blaschke 2015) Introduction Tacoma Narrows Bridge was opened to the public on July 1st 1940 after being in construction for 2 years. The structure was built 5,939–foot–long with a span of 2800 feet in order to bridge the gap between Tacoma and Gig Harbour in the state of Washington, USA. It became known as "Galloping Gertie" due to the fact that the bridge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tension in the suspenders transfers to the cables which run horizontally between the two far–flung anchorages, through which the tensional forces pass in to the ground and are dissipated. (Bagga 2014). Compression is the force pressing a material and compacting it and acts on the towers of a suspension bridge, this force is created from the weight of the towers and the load on the bridge. Compression forces will also act on the surface of the bridge deck as when a load is applied it will have some flexibility and bend, it will then travel up the cables, ropes or chains to transfer the compression forces to the towers. The towers then dissipate the compression directly into the earth. (Bagga 2014). Suspension bridges usually experience torsional forces during very windy conditions where there are high wind speeds, this can create a twisting force causing the deck to rotate resulting in the bridge experiencing shear stress. Dr. Narrow Bedroom Observation The afternoon of March 20, 2016 at 1 pm I sat in the classroom 303 of Brewster B Wing awaiting Dr. Powers to begin her instruction on what would be happening in the Community Lab. We viewed a video that reiterated information that was addressed in the interviewer–training manual, Dr. Powers answered any questions that we had, and then we proceeded to the research lab. The three of us filed into the narrow room that had raised cubicles down the left side. Dr. Powers explained that the room was once used as an observational room with one–way mirrors; this explained the soundproofing boards across the narrow walkway. • 8. Narrow-Spectrum Antibiotics Science Fair Research There are many different types of antibiotics made for a lot of different purposes. Narrow–spectrum antibiotics only work for a few organisms, whereas broad–spectrum work for many organisms. However, there are many similarities and differences between the two. Broad–spectrum antibiotics are made for multiple types of bacteria and are more general towards what they treat. They are used sometimes to treat patients that could have one of many bacteria. They are also used instead of narrow–spectrum antibiotics when patients must start treatment before doctors figure out what bacteria they have. They might also use this if there are multiple types of bacteria in a patient that can harm them in multiple ways. In the case ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As mentioned above, bacteria can build resistance in those ways by changing their genetics a small amount. When they make more vitamins than necessary, it changes the genetics of the bacteria. Also, when they only allow molecules in a certain way, it is also changing their cell wall and genetics. When they let the antibiotic build up and then remove it altogether it is changing the genetics as well. They change their genetics and still carry out their functions in different ways. There are, however, certain bacteria that are resistant towards antibiotics without changing their genes. Certain bacteria are resistant to some antibiotics naturally, and this happens in the case that the bacteria are too strong to kill with a weak antibiotic. Whenever this occurs, patients will normally be prescribed a more powerful antibiotic. This also happens when the colonies of bacteria are too large in comparison to the amount of antibiotic, and taking a higher dosage of antibiotic can help this. There are many similarities and differences between gram positive and gram–negative bacteria. Gram–positive bacteria are weaker than gram–negative bacteria when exposed to ... • 9. Theme Of A Narrow Fellow In The Grass By Emily Dickinson Tremane Parker Larisa Platt ENG 102–02 23 October 2014 Happiness is a Mystery Happiness is found everywhere throughout the entire world. Happiness is within everybody emotionally because it keeps someone in a good mood. It is important to stay happy because that person can be able to live longer. In addition, when someone can think of happiness, they can think of nature. However, when comparing, "Nature" is what we see" and "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass" by Emily Dickinson (650–652), she symbolize here emotion towards nature mysteriously, theoretically, and factual. First, Dickinson describes nature mysteriously. The narrator is explaining about what a person can see outside in the world. In the beginning of the story, the poem explains about her love and gratitude towards nature. Dickinson continues the poem by picking out certain things. "The Hill–––the Afternoon, / Squirrel–––Eclipse–––the Bumble Bee, / The Bobolink–––the Sea, / Thunder––– the Cricket" (650). Therefore, she sees a hill, a bobolink, a squirrel, and a bumblebee. Later, she explains that, "Nature––– is what we hear" (650). Clearly, she hears a bobolink, which is a bird, the sea, Thunder and lightning, and a cricket making noises. Her ... "Galloping Gertie" as she was known to local residents, the massive Washington state suspension bridge shook, rattled and rolled its way into the history books. Legendary in its time, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge held many records and drew tourists from around the world in its short life. However, the famous bridge is not known for its creative engineering or speedy construction, unfortunately the bridge was destined to fail. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After years of deliberation, state officials decided that the time had come to create the Washington Toll Authority in order to save the necessary funding to build a bridge to span the Tacoma Narrows. In 1937 the project had begun, and officials sought a bridge designer to get their plan moving. Leon Moisseiff was commissioned in 1937 to build a bridge that would rival the length of the Brooklyn Bridge yet remain elegant and appealing to residents. He created a perfect design and the project moved in search of contractors. From 1938 to 1940, continuous work constructed a suspension bridge a mile–long. At the time, the Tacoma Narrows was the third largest bridge in the world. The design was simple yet slender, with two 420 foot tall towers and a pair of suspension cables supporting the road. The towers were reinforced carbon steel to support the lengthy bridge. The concrete deck was 39–feet wide and 8–feet deep. The girders were made of carbon steel anchored in giant blocks of concrete. The design was narrower, lighter and more flexible than any other bridge in the world. The Seattle Toll Authority expected to Leon's design to handle 60,000 vehicles a day and increase travel to Olympic Peninsula. The one mistake that caused this entire bridge to fail was a last minute change made by the contractors early on in the build. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Major cities such as San Francisco, and Manhattan both have a suspension bridge. Suspension bridges are," a bridge having a deck suspended from cables anchored at their extremities and usually raised on towers" (dictionary.com). Due to the fact that suspension bridges are not completely supported throughout the length of the bridge, past bridges were unsafe. For example, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was a suspension bridge opened on July 1st, 1940 (Mark Ketchum). Sometimes the wind would not be perpendicular, in which the oscillation of the bridge was less, but there was still some oscillation. On November 7th, 1940, the Tacoma Bridge collapsed because the oscillation of the bridge became extreme. The oscillation of the bridge was caused by a wind speed of 42 mph (HistoryLink.org). After, approximately, an hour of a corkscrew like motion, the bridge collapsed into Puget Sound. This marked a huge turning point in the design of suspension bridges from that point in time to current time. Initially, suspension bridges before 1940 were made of piers, towers, wires, anchorages, and roadways. Piers were the main foundation for the suspension bridges. There usually were two of them, which were made out of cement and were entrenched in ground underneath the body of water that the bridge was spanned across. Towers were built on top of the piers to provide a means of connection for the roadways and wires. Wires were connected to the towers, roadways, and anchorages to provide tension support for the weight of the bridge. The anchorages were large cement platforms that were planted into the ground on either side of the land so that the wires could be connected to it. Lastly, the roadways were the main point of the suspension bridge. They usually were wide enough to provide four lanes of traffic and stretched from one side of the bridge to the other. What kid wouldn't love that! It eventually wore off on him, though. By the time he was eleven, playing dress up and going for candy just seemed too childish. After all, his parents bought a big bag every year, he could just eat that. These days, he only went out with his little brother. As his Matthias went to every house, he stood at the curb, arms crossed, looking like he'd rather be somewhere else. Truthfully, he would. However, with his parents working, he didn't have a choice but to bring Matt around the neighborhood. He honestly didn't mind anymore, though. There was a bit of an age gap between them... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Dylan," his brother sobbed. "That kid stole my candy." "Mrs. Jacobson, can you please watch Matthias? There's something I need to do. It won't take long." When the older woman nodded, Dylan took off running in the direction of Jason. Stealing candy from a little kid was a despicable act. This kid wasn't going to get away with it. Confronting him wasn't an option, though. He didn't want to get into a fight. He wanted this to be quick and easy. As he turned a corner, he ran into a group of his friends. "I need your guys' help," he said. "Somebody stole my brother's candy." After a brief discussion, they were onboard with the plan. Dylan stayed behind as his friends ran over to Jason, screaming about a guy with a knife. They did a great job, acting like they were being chased by a crazed lunatic. He gave them a few more minutes before raising the knife and running over to them, brandishing it. Jason screamed and ran off, the candy forgotten. After returning his friend's costume back to him, Dylan returned to his brother, who was sitting on their neighbor's porch, looking really sad. "Here you go, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Essay The Collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is perhaps the most notorious failure in the world of engineering. It collapsed on November 7, 1940 just months after its opening on July 1, 1940. It was designed by Leon Moisseiff and at its time it was the third largest suspension bridge in the world with a center span of over half a mile long. The bridge was very narrow and sleek giving it a look of grace, but this design made it very flexible in the wind. Nicknamed the "Galloping Gertie," because of its undulating behavior, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge drew the attention of motorists seeking a cheapthrill. Drivers felt that they were driving on a roller coaster, as they would disappear from sight in the trough of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is shaped in a way to transfer weight to the towers and anchors with its tension (O'Connor, 1971, p. 372). Cables are made of high strength wires spirally bound to form a rope (O'Connor, 1971, p. 372). Vertical cable suspenders that are fastened to the main cables hang the actual roadway. Stiffening girders and trusses are along the side of the bridge to distribute concentrated loads and help to keep the motion of the bridge at a minimum (Troitsky, 1994, p115). The basic design of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge itself was a suspension bridge with a center span of 2800 feet and two side spans of one 1100 feet (Farquharson, 1950, p. 17). Its two lane, reinforced concrete roadway was twenty–six feet wide with two 5 foot, 9 inch sidewalks (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). Overall the superstructure was 5939 feet, including the suspension structures, approach spans and anchorages (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). Anchorages were made of solid concrete and were fifty feet by 170 feet and were fifty feet high (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). The main towers which the cables saddle were 425 feet in height and with a spacing of thirty–nine feet at the top and fifty feet at the bottom (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). Each cable consisted of nineteen strands of galvanized wire and totaled a diameter of seventeen inches. The design of the bridge may sound rather large and structurally stable but as mentioned before the bridge was designed to be very sleek looking. By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Tacoma Narrows Bridge Tragedies The masterful works of art, known as bridges, are some of the most complex structures people design. With absurdly complicated bridges, like the Lucky Knot Bridge in China, to an everyday bridge that you would see in North Carolina, engineers everywhere must go through the same process of making sure these bridges are safe and secure. The dedication and amount of hours that go into deciding the structure, what addons will overall make the bridge itself stronger, and what makes these bridges economical checks to see that they are universally safe, and to hopefully prevent another Tacoma Narrows Bridge tragedy. • 34. 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was designed for a wind speed of 100 miles per hour and a static wind pressure of 30 pounds–force per square foot but unfortunately the bridge failed at a wind speed of less than half and a static wind pressure of one–sixth (Delatte, 2009). This phenomenon raises a big question mark on how this is possible. At first, resonance was suspected to be the main cause of the bridge failure (The New York Times, 1940). After some proper research and thorough investigations by engineers, they came up with several theories on how did the bridge collapse. The primary cause of the collapse lies in the general proportions of the bridge and the type of stiffening girders and floor. The ratio of the width of the bridge to the length of the main span was so much smaller and the vertical stiffness was so much less than those of previously constructed bridges that... Theodore von Karman, a famous aeronautical engineer, claimed that the motion that was seen on the day when the bridge was brought into pieces was due to vortices. When an air flow passes a bluff body, it created the periodic shedding of air vortices, which created the von Karman Vortex Street (Delatte, 2009). As a consequence, the bridge would move towards the low–pressure zone, in a wavering development called vortex–induced vibration. On the off chance that the recurrence of vortex shedding matches the regular recurrence of the scaffold, then the structure reverberates and motions may get to be distinctly self–maintaining. This wake reinforced the oscillations that were present and caused the centre span to violently twist until the bridge collapsed (Von KГЎrmГЎn, 1963). Experimental results that was deduced in a 1942 report confirms that the motions were a result of vortex shedding (Farquharson, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Tacoma Narrows Bridge The Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington State had taken three years to complete its building process. It experienced a terrible fate as it collapsed only four months after final construction. During its short existence only vertical vibrations of the bridge were noticed, and the bridge became famously known as "Galloping Gertie" due to the swaying of the roadway under high wind conditions. A positive correlation was observed between the wind's speeds and the bridge's vibrations in certain tests, yet contradictory results are also in existence which prove no correlation between the two. Tourists who paid the bridge toll to venture across the swaying bridge, encompassed by seemingly disappearing vehicles, often considered this bridge a roller–coaster ride with a riding fee tacked on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a replacement for the ferry system in place to venture across the Tacoma Narrows, the 2,800 feet long bridge was created. However, in an attempt to make the bridge more cost–effective, it was built with an unusual design for a suspension bridge– an extremely thin frame of only thirty–nine feet. This created sufficient space for only two lanes on the roadway. Originally, the bridge was supposed to be made more sturdy through the addition of trusses, yet there were inadequate funds. As a result, a cheaper alternative– 8–foot girders– were added on. They were included on the entire expanse of the bridge. However, there was not a sufficient stiffening effect created on the bridge by these girders. There was not enough research in existence on aerodynamic stability for suspension bridges, and wind tunneling/aerodynamic lift was thus not properly accounted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Analysis : ' Enter Through The Narrow Gate ' David Gu Mr. Robert Brinlee 3rd Period Honors English III 21 November 2014 Against the Current It reads in Matthew 7:13–14, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." When pressed to make a decision, one is often inclined to walk the path that one's peers are taking. More often times than not, we look for the easy way out. To merge with the popular outlook, much like the river current that flows downstream to its riverbed, all that is required of us is the immersion of ourselves within its undulation and be washed along. Choosing to be pushed by this current forces us to give up our ideas and substitute it for the common consensus. We realize that frequently our morals depart from the "common" value system, but we deny ourselves the urge to express such social commentary fearing judgement, exclusion, or even persecution by the masses. Few men choose to fight the upstream battle. Fewer men are able to alter its course. No man however can reverse the tide. The moral issues involving slavery and the post Emancipation racial discrimination in 19th century America serves as a perfect example of such an upstream battle. Writer and rhetoric master Mark Twain sheds light on the topic of conflicting human principles in his work The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, what many call "the Great American Novel".Twain ... • 38. Narrow Views On The United States Narrow Minds: Narrow Views Contrary to what many people thing, the dramatic event that happened in New York on September 11, 2001 when Muslim origin terrorist perpetuated the killing of innocent people in the United States was very devastating not just to Americans but also to the rest of the world. The world felt the consequences of this terrorist attack against America apart from condemning it because it was a horrible and inhumane event, but also by America government official's racial profiling citizens of all nationalities that set foot into America territory. As citizens of the United States, we are concerned about criminality undermining our society; drugs, terrorist attacks and violence are increasing in our communities. Although crime is a serious problem in our society, government resources are limited and we live under a terrorist threat. However, racial profiling is not the solution to reduce our social issues because it is unconstitutional, promotes distrust in government agencies, and prevents America from finding a more inclusive solution. Many people have different ideas of what constitutes Racial Profiling but, According to Jody Feder, in "Racial Profiling: Legal and Constitutional Issues," " Racial profiling is the practice of targeting individuals for police or security detention based on their race or ethnicity in the belief that certain minority groups are more likely to engage in unlawful behavior"(4).
