Excessive population of an
area to the point of
overcrowding

3. WHY IS THAT A PROBLEM ?
Human population will
reach 9.2 billion by the year
2050

4. CAUSES OF OVERPOPULATION
FALLING MORTALITY RATE due to the falling
mortality rate , the population is rising and the number of
births, outnumber the number of deaths

BETTER HEALTHCARE due to the increased developments in healthcare ,people have
increased their lifespan increasing the population overall
UNDERUTILIZED CONTACEPTION due to the underutlitised methods of contraception
people don’t know how to prevent unwanted births and are participating in unplanned
pregnancies
IMMIGRATION due to the immigration of people from undeveloped areas to developed
areas the population in developed areas are rising unproportionately and lead to overpopulation
LACK OF FAMILY PLANNING many people don’t actively plan their family, people like
these often deal with unwanted outcomes

AGRICULTURAL ADVANCEMENTS due to the
agricultural advancements there is no longer shortage of
food , this leads to increase in population as less people are
prone to die of hunger and famine

7. THE EFFECTS OF OVERPOPULATION
ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION as the
population rises the need for land also rises this leads to
deforestation ,which leads to environmental degradation

DEPLETION OF NATURAL RESOURCES increase in population
means increase in the consumption of natural resources
HIGH COST OF LIVING as the resources we have are limited the
number of people that need theses resources are rising rapidly which lead to
increase in prices that results in the higher cost of living overall
MALNUTRITION , STARVATION AND FAMINE as the population
rises the people who need food also rises , not everybody can afford to get a
stable diet everyday , this leads to malnutrition, starvation and famines

INCREASED CONFLICTS as the number of people rise ,the number of
conflicts also rise as people often disregard the opinions and need of others
HIGHER RISK OF DISASTERS AND PANDEMICS the faster the
population rises ,the faster can pandemics and diseases spread
WATER SHORTAGE we have limited amount of clean water and
increasing population means increased demand this leads to water shortage

POVERTY increase in population means increase in
unemployment ,the end result of this chain leads to poverty
RISE IN UNEMPLOYMENT the number of people
unemployed rise with the population as the number of jobs are
increasing a lot slower than the increase in population

11. WHAT CAN BE DONE ?
1.EMPOWER WOMEN – Studies show that
women with access to to reproductive health
services find it easier to break out of poverty ,
while those who work are more likely to use
birth control

2.PROMOTE FAMILY PLANNING –simply
educating men and women about contraceptive
can have a big impact

3.ONE CHILD LEGISLATION – during china’s
controversial one child policy the fertility rate
went from 6 births per woman in 1960’s to 1.5
births in 2014
