The Most Mind Blowing Movie Of Outer Space
Interstellar: "The Most Mind–Blowing Movie of Outer Space" Seven billion humans are on earth, and the planet has a life expectancy of two years
left before it ultimately destroys itself. Discovering a new planet is necessary to keep the human race from becoming extinct. The movie Interstellar
shows what actions need to take place when the entire race of humanity is at stake. "As someone who is curious about the possibilities out there.
About what we don 't yet know about this world we live in and what lies beyond as I look up into the star–filled night sky. About God or a higher
being, About science, About how the two may or may not be related, About dimensions, About consciousness, About the unseen and untold. Thisfilm
moved me in all of those respects and more"
(Huffington Post). This film lures viewers in as it raises curiosity of space and possible life on other planets, as well as anticipating the final days of
earth. Director Christopher Nolan is known for making great movies that sell out box offices around the country. He is responsible for movies such
"The Dark Knight Rises", "Man of Steel", "Inception" and many more other household names. "The fact that his last four movies in the past five
years have each won "Movie of The Year" should be one of many reasons on why this film needs to be watched" (IMDb).

Movie Review : Easy Rider
Section 1: "Easy Rider" was a significant film because its success helped start a new Hollywood phase of filmmaking in the early 1970s. Films like
"Duel in The Sun", and "Red River" are what preceded films like "Easy Rider". These films came into being and were financially successful because
they temporarily relieved the fears aroused by a recognition of social and political conflicts. While studios suffered through a box–office slump from
1947 to 1968, the western proved to be a consistently if modestly bankable genre. In an era that seemed to emphasize conformity, the iconoclastic
western hero proved to be a seductive archetype. Along with a revival of the westerns came the emergence of a new genre (auteur films), one targeted at
an audience demographic that the studios coveted more than any other: The American teenager. And with the emergence of television in order for films
to compete with television, movies needed more than a new shape and new sound; they needed to present material that could not be found on the small
screen. 1968 was a pivotal year in American history. The voluntary movie rating system that was introduced that year finally put to rest the motion
picture production code, which had hamstrung the filmmakers throughout the sound era, and it completely changed the look and sound of American
cinema, making possible more adult themed films, films that explored in explicit detail formerly regulated subjects like sexuality and criminality; films

American Culture Between The 1920 ' S
Ever since Thomas Edison invented the Kinetiscope in 1894, films have been reaching its way to the heart of American culture. Since the roaring
twenties, where the United States began to see the first movie theaters to the 1960's, where films are officially a source of leisure and escape from
reality. Films influenced American culture between the 1920's through 1960's by becoming an increasingly popular form of leisure for years to
come while causing scandals, riots, and movements about films or about the idea of films in general by displaying issues in society such as racism,
forming a need for censorship laws. Films have also provided a fantasy world for their audiences by showing a film about someone in their perfect life

An example of a talkie is the film, "Bright Eyes." In 1934, Shirley Temple starred in the film as a young girl who lost her father to a plane crash. The
film is a comedy, yet audiences were able to relate to the young girl as she finds her way through custody battles and more (Document 3). This was
also the beginning of movie theaters. Movie theaters began to take the streets between 1900–1920, where people would pay between five to seven cents
to watch around an hour and a half film (Document 1). There were a variety of ways to watch films, such as drive–in movie theaters. In drive–in
movie theaters, the viewer would drive into a lot with a big screen and watch the film from their car. However, these were very popular in the 1950's
as apposed to the roaring twenties (Document 6). By 1920, such men had been replaced by teams of specialists. Another significant change was the
relocation of the industry from the east coast of the United States to Hollywood, a suburb of Los Angeles in southern California. A third important trend
was the emergence of several film studios that came to dominate production and distribution during the interwar era. By 1930, the structures and
formulae of modern commercial motion pictures had been

The Issue Of India Is Illiteracy
Abstract The most significant issue in India is Illiteracy. Literacy along with awareness among the masses will enable the curb of social evils.
Movies have the power to reach massive audiences, which is why they should, and do, matter so much to society. Only bookish knowledge is not
sufficient to change the society. Gone are the days when we were followers. In 21st century we have to be trendsetter. Every person has his new
story. We have to visualize ourselves. We need to recognize us. This is happened only in cinema. 'All of life's riddles are answered in the movies'
Key words: literacy, trendsetter, recognize, visualize 1. Introduction India has faced and still facing many social, political and economic issues.
However every social problem is inter–related. The most significant issue in India is Illiteracy. Literacy along with awareness among the masses will
enable the curb of social evils. Only by educating the masses, can there be change and progress in the country. Cinema as the most popular media can
directly influence the masses by making them see the world around them in an artistic way and think positively and act proactively. Indian cinema
which is now a century old has recently undergone a change and is fast emerging as a delightful medium of instruction, and motivational. Recently
many films have been produced that aim at exploiting and utilizing creativity for educating the people. I have divided the role of cinema on social
welfare under four heads;

An Experiment On Social Media
If someone signed up for an experiment to just spend 500 dollars for an entire day they would never regret it, right? Typically most people would be
up to the idea and the sign up sheets would fill up quick, even though there is a slight catch. The participant cannot be in contact with anyone they
know, which includes using social media. In hindsight, signing up for this experiment seemed like the perfect opportunity to be alone and spend
money on things like a movie ticket and popcorn, cute clothes, and maybe even starbucks; however, I was sadly very wrong. The experiment started
on February 14th and I was excited to roam around Phoenix and spend money for the sake of psychological science. When the researchers of different
genders came to pick me up from my house I noticed that they had unique name tags, instead of saying their names the name tags said "researcher one"
and "researcher two".
"Mrs. Nyx?" said researcher two as the female researcher detached her pen from her clipboard and clicked the black ball point pen.
"Yes," I replied while I stepped out of my house and lock the front door behind me. Both of the researchers nodded and turned to walk towards their
car while I followed behind. The male researcher climbed into the front seat while researcher one sat next to me so she can debrief me for the
experiment.
"During this experiment you are aware that you can't be in contact with anyone that you know including family and friends," asked researcher two as

Movie Theatre Shooting
The topic we will be discussing in our paper is the Aurora Colorado Movie theatre shooting. First we will go over the events that happened in that
movie theatre that day. Then we will discuss the security personal that the movie theatre had before the incident occurred. In addition we will go fourth
with discussing how the police, hospital and other emergency personals responded to the tragic event. Did movie theatres change their way of security
since this event? Then we will compare this event to homeland security and explain their connection. The Department of Homeland Security is
constantly learning new things and changing procedures and protocols as needed to create a safe and secure nation. This event was important because
the Department of Homeland Security took into consideration maybe their needs to be more security in movie theatres. Before this event movie
theatres were one of the last places you think a tragic shooting incident would occur.
A few questions we wish to answer by the time we finish our research on this paper are the following:
Did this event have a big enough impact on our society to initiate the change of gun laws?
Have movie theatres since this event changed security protocols or enhanced security in general?
On July 20, 2012 in Aurora, Colorado, twelve innocent people were killed and about 70 others were injured. This shooting happened at the midnight
showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado.

I Want To Run Out Analysis
Small, sleepy towns are like bad movies. Your mom drags you to one to "bond" on her day off. Just when you feel settled in with popcorn and soda,
the lights dim, the opening credits roll, and you can tell you're in for an unbearable hour and a half just by the somnolent music that begins to play
over the tinny speakers. The opening scene drags on for several agonizing minutes as the camera pans over barren landscapes, townscapes, bayous, or
tundras. You want to run out the theater door to the car, but you'd hurt your mom's feelings. You're too poor to buy a ticket to another movie. Security
is tight. The writer introduces the teenaged main characters with 20 minutes of dialogue about their strife of obtaining a mundane job. Or going to
prom. The action takes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His dealings with the police invariably ended in woe. "You have nothing to fear," he hollered. "My condition is not as it appears. I have merely had
an unfortunate altercation and find myself in possession of a finger and a modicum of blood." This was a mouthful to relay to someone at a
distance. "What?" said a silhouette. "Edge closer and I shall explain my predicament in full," said Gilman. They crept closer to Gilman's protruding
head. Gilman pulled himself out from underneath and lept to his feet with almost inhuman agility. As the shadows stepped into beams of red and
green light, Gilman was surprised to find that he had seen them before. "Hello," said Gilman. There was a long pause. "I believe I have seen you
about town." "I'm James," said the man in the asparagus–colored light. He was a little taller than Gilman, and it was hard to make out, but Gilman
thought he could decipher long, black hair, which looked a bit greasy, given how it glistened in the dreamy lights. His sharp facial features punctured

Compare and Contrast Watching a Movie at Home vs. Going to...

CHOOSING TO WATCH A MOVIE AT HOME OR IN THEATRES.
Watching a film on TV is better than watching in theaters this how I'm going to prove my comparisons. It's annoying when you hear from friends
what happens in the movie and it ruins the whole thing. It just isn't the same! It depends on, how good your surround system is and how big your
TV is, and economic hardships today. It does not mean that the enjoyment of watching movies needs to be sacrificed. There is something to be said
for big screen viewing; however, the home provides a comfortable, intimate, and common place for families to enjoy classic or newly released movies.
Choosing to watch a movie at home is comfortable, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Let alone deal with the infamous bright light when they would open there cell phone to see who was text them. Most of all, I won't have to keep
looking back at the innocent looking teenager that keeps kicking my chair, even though I have turned around several times to try to directly let him or
her know it was bothering me.
Being comfortable is another big factor for me in determining whether watching a movie at home or at a movie theater? At the theater, comfort ability
is not an option. All chairs in the theater are made in a certain way only allowing you to sit in a position in which the chair is made. Comfort ability at
home is another story. When watching a movie at home, you have the choice of sitting on the floor, couch, and soft chairs or lay down.
When one goes to watch a movie at the theater, they have to plan which theater to go too, the cost of the movie, and visiting the concession stand,
which is over–rated and over–priced, but I do love some theater pop–corn. Assume a family of two (one adult) (one child)
Cost of Child Ticket: $10.00
Cost of Adult Ticket: $.10.00
Totaling around–22.00
Cost of Concessions for two people= $10.00
It's cheaper to wait for the video to come out on video and watch it at home, then you can also eat popcorn at home cheaper. I took my son to see the
Lion King 3D they charged me $22.00 I still watched it. My son didn't want to sit too watch so they gave me my money back. Waste of time that's why

George Miller 's Mad Max Franchise
Mad Max: Road Fury has been consider one of the best movies of the summer. It is the fourth installation in George Miller's Mad Max franchise.
The most interesting thing about this release, however, is that although it is the fourth movie of the series, it come almost thirty years after the
release of the last movie in the franchise. The development, financing, and eventual production of Fury Road is incredibly interesting because
although almost everything went wrong, it still became a successful movie, both critically and in the box office. A decade after the release of the
third installment of the Mad Max franchise, Beyond the Thunderdome, Warner Bros. began to develop a Mad Max TV show. However, at the
time, the 90s, a TV show that violent would never have been aired, and as such, they began to focus on a fourth Mad Max movie, set for the late
90s. (Meslow) In 2001, 9/11 derailed the movie for financial reasons. In Miller's own words, "'Everything closed down, shipping closed down,
insurance closed down and most of all the American dollar collapsed by about 25% within a few weeks." Additionally, the studio decided that such
bleak times called for happier movies, because of this, Miller decided to work on Happy Feet instead. (Bravin) By 2003, the Mad Max movie was
set to begin filming in Namibia. However, the location was determined to be a security risk, causing it to be delayed once again. By 2006, Mel Gibson
began to distance himself from the movie, thinking that it

The movie that I decided to review was The Fate of the Furious. This is the 8th film in the Fast and the Furious series. I was finally able to see this
film on April 21, 2017 at 7 o'clock in the evening at The Junction Megaplex theatre in Ogden, Utah. This movie is directed by F Gary Gray and the
music editor is Brain Tyler. Dominic Toretto (Dom) and his newly wedded wife Letty are celebrating their honeymoon in Cuba and don't return to the
United States. Dom then went into town to get some groceries and discovers a lady named Cipher trying to fix her vehicle. While Dom is looking at
what is missing, the lady addresses Dom by his name. She wants to work with him and shows him something on her phone ... Show more content on

At the top of the walls, there were curtains of thick fabrics and layers of material help absorb sound while providing a decorative touch that
improves your impression of the establishment as a whole. These curtains were also a charcoal gray color to make the wall took seamless. The stairs
were covered in carpet and were lit so that people could see where they were going if they had to leave while the movie was on. There was painted
flooring underneath each of the chairs.
The chairs were a black leather fabric. There were about 75 chairs that were actually recliners so that you could relax while watching the movie giving
the movie theater a homelike feel. When the movie previews started, the lights dimmed to soft yellow lighting. The light came from purple yellow
and red lighting structures. Movie theaters are set up this way because they are trying to soundproof, have better acoustics, and make clients
comfortable so that the patron would want to come back to another movie. It's all about keeping clientele. If there is none of the listed items, people
are less inclined to come back.
Description of Musical Style
Brian Tyler's musical concept can be described as a straightforward use of simple themes and triadic harmonies. This score however is somewhat
distinctive in that the realization of this musical approach makes use of traditional music accented by synthetic timbres and sounds for the added
intensity effect. The combination of these electronic

Digital Film Technology Revolutionizes the Film Industry...
Digital Film Technology Revolutionizes the Film Industry
With the release of Star Wars: Episode I the Phantom Menace, in March of 1999, digital film technology officially filtered itself in to main–stream
Hollywood. Digital film technology is the latest and probably most revolutionizing new technology to hit Hollywood. The use of digital film allows for
infinite editing capabilities and endless benefits to distribution and special effects. The use of digital film allows for producers to add in extras,
produce stunts, and even create false people with the click of a mouse. Time and cost consuming stunts, stunt doubles, and actors may no longer be a
worthy concern to producers and their budgets. Though the growing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Directors and producers are allowed to let their imaginations run wild. This ease of use attracts filmmakers to convert to a digital format. The skill and
cost of technology which goes into creating these effects, in return creates jobs for others.
Digital film not only enhances effects, but its special effects capabilities are so great, that it is also beginning to replace people. For example, in
Titanic, released in the winter of 1997/1998, false people are created to enhance the reality and excitement of the scene. The movie shows a scene
which the ship tilts completely vertical. Passengers of the ship slide into the water, and fall from the rails of the enormous ship. These passengers add
drama and reality to the scene. The passengers vividly dictate the harshness of the situation. Though these unfortunate passengers add a wealth of
reality to the scene, they are not even real people. Creating this scene on a standard film format with stunt doubles, would have been difficult and time
consuming. They were instead created with digital film technology. Digital film technology erased the need for stunt doubles. Though real people were
not employed to be these characters, jobs behind the scenes were instead utilized. Creators of the digital passengers were employed directly, and
indirectly, business and jobs were harvested from the digital equipment used. Even though physical people were

Angelina Weld Grimke's Poetry and Use of Nature Essay
Angelina Weld GrimkГ© was born in Boston, Massachusetts February 27, 1880 to Archibald Henry GrimkГ© and Sarah E. Stanley. As a result,
GrimkГ© was born into a rather "unusual and distinguished biracial family" (Zvonkin, para. 1). Her father was the son of a slave and her master, who
also happened to be the brother of the two famous abolitionist GrimkГ© sisters: Angelina and Sarah. GrimkГ©'s mother, Sarah, was from a prominent,
white middle class family; she left GrimkГ© and her African American husband due to racial pressure from her white family and, as a result,
GrimkГ© was raised entirely by her father. Angelina Weld GrimkГ©, besides working as a teacher in the capital, was also a well known playwright,
essayist, and poet. Her work has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As stated before, most of GrimkГ©'s work was produced during the Harlem Renaissance, a time when racial issues were becoming more to the public
forefront. Although she was quite involved in the betterment of people of color, as can be seen by a number of her poems and plays that discussed
racial issues, she did not want race to define who she was as a writer. "Feeling constrained by the label 'race writer', they opted for what they
considered more universal themes appropriate to the art of poetry and insisted on the freedom to follow their individual muse." (Honey/Bloom,
225–226). GrimkГ© also used nature to symbolically represent racial issues, ranging from racial injustice to racial pride, in her poems. Although
she did not want her work to be defined as 'race writing', she did understand, especially since she herself came from a biracial background, the
importance of ending racism and supporting the betterment of people of color. One poem that uses nature in such a manner, mainly that of racial
pride, is the poem "At April": "Toss your gay heads,/ Brown girl trees;/ Toss your lovely gay heads;/ Shake your brown slim bodies;/ Stretch your
brown slim arms;/ Stretch your brown slim toes;/ Who knows better than we,/ With the dark, dark bodies,/ What it means/ When April comes
a–laughing and a–weeping/ Once again/ At our hearts?" (GrimkГ©/Herron, 65).
In this poem, GrimkГ© uses the imagery of trees to describe the beauty

Holocaust And The Moving Image Moves Through The Five...
To answer the questions formulated through the symposium, Holocaust and the Moving Image moves through the five areas of its concentration, with
the first section devoted to Film as Witness. This section uses a number of still photographs taken from personal and archival films created by the
liberators of the Nazi camps to demonstrate how these films were acquired. Of interest is the idea that the liberating soldiers initially charged with
simple document(ary) filming soon learned to develop and respond to a narrative of suffering and humanity that has earmarked subsequent films used
in the study of the Holocaust. Care is taken within the section, to authenticate the images and to explain their content in such a way as to avoid pathos
and sensationalism – although both are inherent to the subject matter. The editors of Holocaust and the Moving Image use careful editing and allow the
reader to consciously place themselves in the space of the soldiers collecting those first images. The conversation surrounding the ideas and the film
used as witness does stand up to the efforts of authentication, and verifies the historical moment, though as an anthology, Holocaust and the Moving
Image is unable to provide an arena for sustained arguments on conditions of film collection and production.
In looking at film as propaganda, as presented in this text, this reader found irony amid the facts of documented Holocaust horror, where questions are
raised as to race, class, and artistic

Impact Of Digital Media On Cinema
It is obvious that technological convergence leads to the changes in media production and distribution (Bolin 2007; Tryon 2009; Dixon & Foster
2011). These changes can be observed through the ways films are promoted and exhibited have also been affected by the use of digital media. The
following sections will provide a detail analysis of these changes.
Tryon (2009) examines the transformation of cinema to the digital form. The proliferation of new portable technologies sparked the debates about the
changes in the film industry. On the one hand, there are concerns that digital media and home entertainment systems threaten the future of cinema, as
they provide viewers more choices and flexibility in watching movies. On the other hand, media ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first thing to consider is the formats of movies. Digital formats have gradually replaced the film for many reasons: space–efficient, inexpensive,
immediate and unlimited (Pavlik & McIntosh 2014, pp. 223 – 224). This is because physical films not only cost more but are also inconvenient to
print, deliver and preserve. Meanwhile, the transfer of data by using digital tools is extremely fast and easy, whether through a computer or via
satellite. For example, traditional types of film reels, such as the 35mm or 70mm, have given place for high–capacity hard drives (Dixon & Foster
2011, p. 22). Pavlik & McIntosh (2014) also emphasize that while the digital data still need to be kept in a physical storage, it is still far more
space–saving than that needed by an analog form. Furthermore, it is totally free to duplicate the digital movies and send them to distributors.
The movie industry, along with other mass media industries, has become more democratized and fragmented due to the use of digital technology.
While the market is still dominated by a few giants, there are more spaces for smaller players. Retailers like Netflix or Amazon have paved the way
for niche products to be consumed. This is what academics refer to as the long tail, which is the main focus of Chris Anderson's 2006 book. According
to Anderson, our culture has long been obsessed with a small number of 'hits' – popular contents made by powerful companies.

Despite perceptions to the contrary, Latin America does exercise its military power globally. In World War II, Brazil deployed an infantry division to

The Center for Systemic Peace's Polity Project found almost every country that it studied in the region scored five or more in its democratic scale,
with solidly democratic societies such as Costa Rica, Uruguay, and Chile trending toward the upper ranks. Only Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela scored
poorly. Likewise, Freedom House graded totalitarian Cuba as the only unfree country in the region. Regional public opinion surveys point in a similar
direction.
This remarkable synergy leads some experts, such as Parag Khanna, to suggest "Elevating South America to its rightful place as the third pillar of the

How Has the Experience of Cinema-Going Changed over the...
MAS205 В– Essay #1
Question 1
The film–industry has changed dramatically since its birth over a century ago. With these changes have also come great changes in the cinema–going
experience. In the MAS205 unit reader for 2005, a number of the readings aim to address many aspects of the experience of cinema–going. Included in
the unit reader are pieces by Barthes, Carriere, Sontag, Moore and Lowenstein. Each of these writers has varying feelings to cinema–going over the
past century and this essay will aim to address these different aspects.
Roland Barthes' in his article В‘Leaving the Movie Theatre' provides us with an interesting way of looking at cinema–going. He paints a picture at the
start of his article about moviegoers always leaving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sontag's article В‘A Century of Cinema' describes cinemas cycle over the past hundred years as moving from glorious to dull and is an overall
criticism of the industry now. She rightly points out that films nowadays have to really do something special, namely violate "the norms and practices
which now govern movie–making everywhere in the capitalist and would–be capitalist world" in order for us to "admire" them (Sontag, S. 1997).
Cinema has moved in a more commercial direction, concentrating on quantity, not quality, rather than remaining purely an art form. What this means
for cinema today is that a movie is less likely to stand the test of time and leave a lasting impression in our mind because all they are good for now is
their entertainment value.
Another point raised by Sontag was that cinema in its' early days had a unique ability to В‘kidnap' its' audience. She felt that "seated in the dark
among anonymous strangersВ…you learned how to walk, to smoke, to kiss, to fight, to grieve" as well as "losing yourself in faces, in lives that were
not yours." (Sontag, S. 1997) This, contrary to what Sontag argues, is still applicable today. There are many audience members, today and in previous
years, which idolize certain film actors and/or characters. As a result, they base their actions around their hero would do, such as repeating famous
quotes from movies in everyday conversations. Sontag

Competition in the Movie Rental Industry in 2008: Netflix and Blockbuster Battle for Market Leadership
Although the corporate strategies implemented by Netflix and Blockbuster have allowed them to become leaders of competitive advantage in the
movie rental industry, they sometimes encounter strategic issues that slow down their product and services process. My research of Netflix and
Blockbuster will enable me to present a SWOT analysis and recommendations for each company.
Netflix, founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings, has achieved its goal of becoming the largest online movie rental service in the world. By the end of 2007,
Netflix recorded revenues of $1.2 billion. With a library of 100,000 movie titles and a subscriber base of over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Rivalry among industry competitors – Netflix and Blockbuster are in a highly competitive industry. Competitors include merchant retailers, such as
Wal–Mart, Best Buy, and Target; video and game store like Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery, and Game Stop; supermarkets, convenient stores such
as Publix, and McDonald's. The significant rival is Hollywood Video which offers movie and game rentals (Xie & Lin, 2008).
Bargaining power of buyers –Buyers are not in concentrated groups and do not buy in large amounts. However, within the entertainment industry,
customers have a lot of alternatives and have no switching cost. However the introduction of DVDs, influenced customers to purchase DVDs since the
cost is almost the same cost of rentals. This makes buyer power moderate (Xie & Lin, 2008).
The five forces of competition of the movie rental industry presents little force against a competitor's market position based on buyer power, supplier
power, and new entrant threats. However, threat of substitutes and rivalry among competitors can affect the amount of profits a company will gain and
retain.

The presence of Netflix and Blockbuster in the movie rental industry has assisted me in developing this analysis of each corporation's strength,

The transregional, multi–domain, and multi–functional (TMM) environment we face today requires strategic direction and guidance from the

Tsa Pros And Cons
If you have ever traveled on an airplane before, you would be familiar with the Transportation Security Administration, or more commonly known as the
TSA. Founded in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks initially under the Department of Transportation and later placed under the Department of
Homeland Security all in the name of making air travel safer for Americans. They are most commonly known for making you take off your shoes,
separate your liquids, and walk through body scanners. Keep in mind that those are only the least invasive things that you may be subjected to while
passing under their watchful (or perhaps not–so watchful) gaze. Many Americans will gladly accept these invasions of privacy as a necessity on the

How The Security Theater Reflected In The Handmaid's Tale
The words Security Theater came about in 2007 by Zack Phillips to describe the evoked feelings of security without actually providing it
(Government Executive, August 2007). Security Theater is an underlying concept that is discussed throughout the novel of The Handmaid's Tale by
Margaret Atwood. Security Theater is described through the society of Gilead in The Handmaid's Tale when women are stripped of the ability to
work, the ability to have a bank account and the ability to read and write. Gilead places restrictions on women of the society in order to protect them
so the women can remain fertile and give birth to babies to increase the population of the society by becoming handmaid's if the women are still fertile

Digital Technology and Filmmaking
Since the first movies were first made, they have been shot using film of various sizes, such as 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm. Within the past few years,
technology has brought digital cameras to the film industry, and now they are being used in independent and Hollywood films. The recent low budget
film The Blair Witch Project was primarily filmed using a Sony VX1000 digital camera, and the movie The Celebration was totally filmed using this
camera and the Canon XL–1, ("Should I Shoot 16mm or Digital?"). With some of digital's seemingly wonderful qualities, such as its low cost, it may

In Newsweek magazine, Jan 10, 2000 issue, a brief article called "Going Digital" makes note of digital's approaching effects (12). It says that

National French Cinema
Raoul Peck
France is the birthplace of cinema and is responsible for many of its significant contributions to the art form worldwide, including the filmmaking
process itself. I've learned about the greats but haven't been introduced to a man quite as distinguished and relatable to myself as a young black
aspiring creator.
Early Life: Although not born in France, Raoul Peck has become a notable director and screenwriter and has left a memorable impact in the film
industry with his cinematic adaptations of reality. From taxi driver, to Minister of culture, to honorary award winning director, Raoul Peck has
experienced the world in ways few will ever have the chance to. Just as he thought his life would revolve around international affairs at the United
Nations, he created a bigger platform to spread the news about foreign relations. His documentaries and films have been about real people and he
believes film can try and save our histories, our memories whilst guiding society in a better direction.
Peck had an unusual but interesting childhood upbringing. In 1953 he was born in Port–au–Prince, Haiti however, at the age of 8, his family sought
asylum in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Peck's tutelage spreads across 2 continents and the caribbean islands. He attended schools in
Kinshasa, DRC, (Brooklyn) New York, United States, OrlГ©ans, France, and Berlin, Germany. Peck attended primary school

marketing expense. * Large capital for initializing a business: a large capital is required for establishing a new business in this industry whether a

Vertical integration in studio system Essay
Vertical integration in studio system
The term "vertical integration" refers to the structure of a marketplace, which is integrated (rather than segregated) at a variety of crucial levels. In the
case of the motion picture industry, the studio system established a market in which the studios owned production facilities, distribution outlets, and
theaters. In other words, the studios controlled every level of the marketplace from the top down, from production to exhibition.
"Vertical integration" began in the 1910s and inspired the postwar consolidation of the studio system as national distribution companies, such as
Paramount merged with production companies, such as Famous
Players and Lasky and subsequently began purchasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The majors owned only a fraction of the nation's theaters, e.g. 3000 of the 18000. But these theaters were large, first run houses and located in big
cities. Therefore they generated 70% of the box office receipts.
The majors ensured the profitability of their own theaters and controlled the independents by instituting a series of special distribution practices. These
were known as block booking, blind bidding, runs, zones, and clearances.
Block booking refers to the rental of films in large quantity. If exhibitors wanted to rent films, they have to rent the entire yearly output. And since they
contracted with the distributors before the film has been made, the distributors were forced to bid for them without seeing them, a procedure called
blind bidding. This way the studios could sell the bad pictures with good.
As a result of the system the new films will be first rented to the first run theaters of which the majority was owned by the studios, and then its shown
in the second run and sub run theaters after a clearance time of about 7–30 days (to renew demand). Distribution is also guided by a system of zones;
only one theater in any particular area is allowed to show a new picture.
The dismantling of the studio system began just before World War II when the U.S. Department of justice's Antitrust Division filed suit against the 8
studios for the use of their monopolistic methods

Film Analysis : American Honey By Andrea Arnold
One of the first things I learned in cinema class was that the size of the screen can play a huge role in the way the viewer experiences a film.
American Honey by Andrea Arnold felt like one of those movies that was tailor made to be experienced to its full potential on the big screen. If I saw
this movie at home on a smaller screen, there would be so many things that I would not be able to experience because of the limitation on–screen size.
Andrea Arnold uses the technique of viewing cinema as a window to give a better experience and outlook for the audience. Using cinema as a
window gives the viewers a special ocular access to whatever is going on throughout the film (Elsasser 14). This is usually a rectangular view which
helps the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, the moving camera constantly shifts and changes relationships helping me engage in the film and think about what was going on.
Furthermore, Arnold uses cinema as a window and creates an open film. It seemed like at any part of the movie you could turn the camera off, but
the events that were going on would still occur and everything would still be the same in the diegetic world. This tells us Arnold created the
diegetic world to be its own separate world where everything occurs according to the characters, it extends far beyond the limit of the image
(Elsasser 18), it is not a world that is meant to be created just for the purpose of the movie. This is most evident in the last scene of the film where
Star is in the lake and she jumps the screen goes still and the credits roll in. While I was watching the movie and this sequence occurred, I was
expecting more to happen, but then Star's image froze and then the credits came and I was shocked for a bit, but realizing how Arnold set up this
film and the techniques that she used it was not really a surprise. The sequence that occurred reminded of the ending scene in Mediterranea, it was the
scene where Arnold tells the audience their role in the film is over and cuts off their access from the diegetic world. The stable camera signalled the
ending for the viewer. Even though the movie has ended it is made clear that the events going on in the

What Makes A Fast Food Restaurant?
Ancient Rome and Greece had thermopoliums, which is where ready–to–eat food was served for travelers. Unfortunately, when the volcanoes erupted
in Pompeii, the thermopoliums were destroyed. The thermopolium is often compared to the modern day fast food restaurant, due to the already
prepared food and quick service. Everyone has eaten fast food in their life, but do they know the history and consequences of choosing the fast food life?
White Castle, which opened in Wichita, Kansas, in 1921 is credited as the first fast food restaurant. White Castle's founders decided to change how the
public perceived hamburgers, since many people saw hamburgers as low quality. For this reason, they built their restaurant so that the customers could
see their food being prepared. The term fast food was not widely used when White Castle first opened. The actual term fast food was recognized in the
Merriam–Webster dictionary in 1951. A fast food restaurant is generally known for its fast food cuisine, minimal table service, and quick service. The
customers place their own orders and take care of picking up their own condiments, utensils, etc. The Curb Service started as a novelty at an A&W
shop, but soon spread nationwide.
In 1955, April 15, the first McDonald's restaurant opened in Des Plaines, Illinois. The first assembly line was introduced in 1937. An assembly line is
a line of method where meals are put together very quickly by several employees. McDonald's growth spread tremendously

Netflix is an American provider and the world's leading internet subscription service of on–demand streaming media in the United States, Canada, Latin
America, the Caribbean, United Kingdom and Ireland and flat rate DVD–by–mail in the United States. Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited
films and TV episodes streamed over the internet to more than 700 devices for about $7.99 a month. With regards to increasing the influence of the

* Very competitive prices. For as little as $7.99 a month, people can watch as many movies as they want, either streaming or on DVDs. For just a bit
more, a higher number of DVDs can be taken out at a time, giving users more flexibility. This form of movierenting is less expensive than paying for
cable movie channels, while giving customers more selection.
Weaknesses * Pricing power. The studios can still dictate some serious terms to Netflix, limiting when various movies become available (the infamous

The Great Depression
After WW1 the Great Depression had a very late impact on the major film companies in France, when it did, it unfortunately caused several film
studios to go bankrupt, then in the late 1920's to 1930's many small film companies and groups emerged giving birth to the tendency called poetic
realism. Because the large companies who made films with a focus on making money were gone the filmmakers and artists were able to concern
themselves with the art of film, they often took poetic innovations that we can associate with impressionism or surrealism and combined them to create
a more realistic style of narrative filmmaking. Therefore these films stylistic techniques have been influenced by the political and economical historical
contexts that took place in France that has enhanced these films aesthetic. The growth of political awareness had then reflected in the films of this
time, thus the enormous historical impact that effected France's films and industry. The question can be asked, how did these social, political and
economic issues of France at the time come thought the arts and cinema and start a very impactful thread of films.
Before WW1 and The Great Depression France dominated international film screens, especially in 1929 when the coming of sound really boosted their
industry, people were extremely interested in hearing the French dialogue. The French film industry was thriving; they had a very high demand for
films, which then meant the demand for theaters were

Watching a Movie at Home vs. Theater Essay example
Movies are one of the biggest entertainment sources for anyone in the world, and for the same reason film industry is the largest of any industries with
India making the most number of movies per year than any other country. People watch movies at home on their television or in the theaters on a big
screen where the film is been displayed with a movie projector onto a large projection screen at the front of the auditorium. Watching a movie at home

It can be easier for parents to exercise their control over children if they are watching a movie at home. If a movie scene is not appropriate for a
child, then they have the choice of fast forwarding it or stopping the movie whereas one does not have that choice in the theater. Movie theaters
make it more difficult on parent's pockets by having a huge variety and display of goodies for children. The food items are overly priced in a theater
and that could be a big dent in the pocket if added on to the price of entrance ticket.
Some theaters give people and option to go movie hopping where one can see as many movies with one theater entrance purchase. This is very
economical for people who wait for all their favorite movies to accumulate and watch all of them together in day. This is difficult to do if one wants to
wait for the television channels to telecast them.
There is a broad variety of types of theaters available– conventional theaters, IMAX and drive in's. Going to a theater is a good change for a person in
contrast to watching it at home. Theaters are a popular dating spot for person any age. One can choose between the types of theater one wants to go

fulfill one of my Stony Brook Curriculum requirements, however I absolutely do not regret my decision at all. Every Monday night I am given an

many more. Whether I had cried my eyes out or laughed nonstop throughout the movie, I would leave the lecture hall with an even greater appreciation

Something that I believe really took away from this movie would be the editing. The transition between scenes is quite frankly abrupt and
distracting; at the end of several scenes, the entire screen would intensify to a bloody red color, which forced me to look away because my eyes
hurt from looking at it. Another bad case of editing can be seen more towards the end of the film. When Francois finds Therese's corpse by the side
of the pond, he embraces her in his arms, with his head on her chest devastated. When I first watched this scene, I thought there was some sort of
glitch with the system because the scene started replaying about ten times. It appears that Agnes Varda's intention was to make this scene as emotional
and dramatic as possible, but when a clip is replayed constantly it can be misinterpreted as comedic; everyone watching, including myself, burst out in
laughter when we saw this part of the movie. From my perspective, another flaw in Happiness that made it a second–rate film was the plot. I was
confused by various parts of the film and even after the film was finished, I had so many questions left. From just the opening scenes of this movie, it
is quite obvious that Francois and Therese are deeply in love with each other; often times they will express their love for each other through physical
touch and sexual intercourse. But I

Section 1:
"Easy Rider" was a significant film because its success helped start a new Hollywood phase of filmmaking in the early 1970s. Films like "Duel in The
Sun", and "Red River" are what preceded films like "Easy Rider". These films came into being and were financially successful because they
temporarily relieved the fears aroused by a recognition of social and political conflicts. While studios suffered through a box–office slump from 1947
to 1968, the western proved to be a consistently if modestly bankable genre.
In an era that seemed to emphasize conformity, the iconoclastic western hero proved to be a seductive archetype. Along with a revival of the westerns
came the emergence of a new genre (auteur films), one targeted at an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The studios used the rating system less to regulate or censor the content of their films than to differentiate among products to advertise their pictures
better and target audiences more precisely.
1968 was also a pivotal year in American social and political history. It saw two political assassinations (of the civil rights leader Martin Luther King
Jr. and the presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy) and a dramatic turn for the worse for the us forces in the Vietnam war. To produce a new
American cinema that might reflect or capture this tumultuous era, the studios turned to a coterie of young directors, later dubbed the movie brats.
The film easy rider made it clear just how important the youth audience would be to a Hollywood recovery. Its free form style and evocative use of a
rock and pop–music score provided a template for future gestures in the younger generations direction, easy rider is very much an auteur picture, on in
which an auteur's eccentric style and form transformed a familiar genre (the road picture) into something undeniably modern and idiosyncratic. Hopper
fashioned a complex mix of the teen biker picture, the French New Wave where he broke down narrative structure, toyed with genre, mixed and
matched styles and most important, captured the ambience of cool. The documentary style was especially important to the films larger appeal as it
enticed viewer to sympathize with its counterculture heroes.
By the time the action blockbuster became the sine qua

The Greatest Day Of My Life
Everyone needs some form of escape from reality. While this varies from person to person, with the entertainment business booming, it is safe to
infer that many find their comfort with movie theatres. Many of these people like to be engulfed by the story of their movie. My escape,
however, comes from just being inside the theatre. There is something magical about theatres that keeps bringing me back. The first time I vividly
remember going to the movies was when the second Harry Potter movie released. I finally watched the first movie on our brand new DVD player and
read the four books that had been released. When the Saturday came to go to the Edwards in Irvine, I woke up extra early to make terrible pancakes
for everybody (this is also a time when I wanted to be a chef). I begged my parents to take to me to the nearby 7–11 to buy all the candy that we were
going to sneak in the theatre. I knew that this was going to be the greatest day of my life. While I know now my parents were reluctant to spend all
that money, I know that today they would not change a thing. Going to the movies in the early 2000's for my family meant more than just
watching a movie. With my mother working two jobs and my father deploying every other year to different parts of the world as a Marine, these
Saturdays were a very rare occasion. Not only do I get to watch a movie, I get to spend a whole day with my family hopping from movie to movie.
There were no fights, no problems, and no worries.

The Most Mind Blowing Movie Of Outer Space Interstellar: "The Most Mind–Blowing Movie of Outer Space" Seven billion humans are on earth, and the planet has a life expectancy of two years left before it ultimately destroys itself. Discovering a new planet is necessary to keep the human race from becoming extinct. The movie Interstellar shows what actions need to take place when the entire race of humanity is at stake. "As someone who is curious about the possibilities out there. About what we don 't yet know about this world we live in and what lies beyond as I look up into the star–filled night sky. About God or a higher being, About science, About how the two may or may not be related, About dimensions, About consciousness, About the unseen and untold. Thisfilm moved me in all of those respects and more" (Huffington Post). This film lures viewers in as it raises curiosity of space and possible life on other planets, as well as anticipating the final days of earth. Director Christopher Nolan is known for making great movies that sell out box offices around the country. He is responsible for movies such "The Dark Knight Rises", "Man of Steel", "Inception" and many more other household names. "The fact that his last four movies in the past five years have each won "Movie of The Year" should be one of many reasons on why this film needs to be watched" (IMDb). And with the emergence of television in order for films to compete with television, movies needed more than a new shape and new sound; they needed to present material that could not be found on the small screen. 1968 was a pivotal year in American history. The voluntary movie rating system that was introduced that year finally put to rest the motion picture production code, which had hamstrung the filmmakers throughout the sound era, and it completely changed the look and sound of American cinema, making possible more adult themed films, films that explored in explicit detail formerly regulated subjects like sexuality and criminality; films like easy ... Since the roaring twenties, where the United States began to see the first movie theaters to the 1960's, where films are officially a source of leisure and escape from reality. Films influenced American culture between the 1920's through 1960's by becoming an increasingly popular form of leisure for years to come while causing scandals, riots, and movements about films or about the idea of films in general by displaying issues in society such as racism, forming a need for censorship laws. An example of a talkie is the film, "Bright Eyes." In 1934, Shirley Temple starred in the film as a young girl who lost her father to a plane crash. The film is a comedy, yet audiences were able to relate to the young girl as she finds her way through custody battles and more (Document 3). This was also the beginning of movie theaters. Movie theaters began to take the streets between 1900–1920, where people would pay between five to seven cents to watch around an hour and a half film (Document 1). There were a variety of ways to watch films, such as drive–in movie theaters. In drive–in movie theaters, the viewer would drive into a lot with a big screen and watch the film from their car. However, these were very popular in the 1950's as apposed to the roaring twenties (Document 6). By 1920, such men had been replaced by teams of specialists. Another significant change was the relocation of the industry from the east coast of the United States to Hollywood, a suburb of Los Angeles in southern California. A third important trend was the emergence of several film studios that came to dominate production and distribution during the interwar era. • 6. The Issue Of India Is Illiteracy Abstract The most significant issue in India is Illiteracy. Literacy along with awareness among the masses will enable the curb of social evils. Movies have the power to reach massive audiences, which is why they should, and do, matter so much to society. Only bookish knowledge is not sufficient to change the society. Gone are the days when we were followers. In 21st century we have to be trendsetter. Every person has his new story. We have to visualize ourselves. We need to recognize us. This is happened only in cinema. 'All of life's riddles are answered in the movies' Key words: literacy, trendsetter, recognize, visualize 1. Introduction India has faced and still facing many social, political and economic issues. However every social problem is inter–related. The most significant issue in India is Illiteracy. Literacy along with awareness among the masses will enable the curb of social evils. Only by educating the masses, can there be change and progress in the country. Cinema as the most popular media can directly influence the masses by making them see the world around them in an artistic way and think positively and act proactively. Indian cinema which is now a century old has recently undergone a change and is fast emerging as a delightful medium of instruction, and motivational. Recently many films have been produced that aim at exploiting and utilizing creativity for educating the people. I have divided the role of cinema on social welfare under four heads; ... Typically most people would be up to the idea and the sign up sheets would fill up quick, even though there is a slight catch. The participant cannot be in contact with anyone they know, which includes using social media. In hindsight, signing up for this experiment seemed like the perfect opportunity to be alone and spend money on things like a movie ticket and popcorn, cute clothes, and maybe even starbucks; however, I was sadly very wrong. The experiment started on February 14th and I was excited to roam around Phoenix and spend money for the sake of psychological science. When the researchers of different genders came to pick me up from my house I noticed that they had unique name tags, instead of saying their names the name tags said "researcher one" and "researcher two". "Mrs. Nyx?" said researcher two as the female researcher detached her pen from her clipboard and clicked the black ball point pen. "Yes," I replied while I stepped out of my house and lock the front door behind me. Both of the researchers nodded and turned to walk towards their car while I followed behind. The male researcher climbed into the front seat while researcher one sat next to me so she can debrief me for the experiment. First we will go over the events that happened in that movie theatre that day. Then we will discuss the security personal that the movie theatre had before the incident occurred. In addition we will go fourth with discussing how the police, hospital and other emergency personals responded to the tragic event. Did movie theatres change their way of security since this event? Then we will compare this event to homeland security and explain their connection. The Department of Homeland Security is constantly learning new things and changing procedures and protocols as needed to create a safe and secure nation. This event was important because the Department of Homeland Security took into consideration maybe their needs to be more security in movie theatres. Before this event movie theatres were one of the last places you think a tragic shooting incident would occur. A few questions we wish to answer by the time we finish our research on this paper are the following: Did this event have a big enough impact on our society to initiate the change of gun laws? Have movie theatres since this event changed security protocols or enhanced security in general? On July 20, 2012 in Aurora, Colorado, twelve innocent people were killed and about 70 others were injured. This shooting happened at the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Just when you feel settled in with popcorn and soda, the lights dim, the opening credits roll, and you can tell you're in for an unbearable hour and a half just by the somnolent music that begins to play over the tinny speakers. The opening scene drags on for several agonizing minutes as the camera pans over barren landscapes, townscapes, bayous, or tundras. You want to run out the theater door to the car, but you'd hurt your mom's feelings. You're too poor to buy a ticket to another movie. Security is tight. Gilman pulled himself out from underneath and lept to his feet with almost inhuman agility. As the shadows stepped into beams of red and green light, Gilman was surprised to find that he had seen them before. "Hello," said Gilman. There was a long pause. "I believe I have seen you about town." "I'm James," said the man in the asparagus–colored light. He was a little taller than Gilman, and it was hard to make out, but Gilman thought he could decipher long, black hair, which looked a bit greasy, given how it glistened in the dreamy lights. Watching a film on TV is better than watching in theaters this how I'm going to prove my comparisons. It's annoying when you hear from friends what happens in the movie and it ruins the whole thing. It just isn't the same! It depends on, how good your surround system is and how big your TV is, and economic hardships today. Most of all, I won't have to keep looking back at the innocent looking teenager that keeps kicking my chair, even though I have turned around several times to try to directly let him or her know it was bothering me. Being comfortable is another big factor for me in determining whether watching a movie at home or at a movie theater? At the theater, comfort ability is not an option. All chairs in the theater are made in a certain way only allowing you to sit in a position in which the chair is made. Comfort ability at home is another story. When watching a movie at home, you have the choice of sitting on the floor, couch, and soft chairs or lay down. When one goes to watch a movie at the theater, they have to plan which theater to go too, the cost of the movie, and visiting the concession stand, which is over–rated and over–priced, but I do love some theater pop–corn. Assume a family of two (one adult) (one child) Cost of Child Ticket: $10.00 Cost of Adult Ticket: $.10.00 Totaling around–22.00 Cost of Concessions for two people= $10.00 It's cheaper to wait for the video to come out on video and watch it at home, then you can also eat popcorn at home cheaper. I took my son to see the Lion King 3D they charged me $22.00 I still watched it. My son didn't want to sit too watch so they gave me my money back. Waste of time that's why

  • 12. George Miller 's Mad Max Franchise Mad Max: Road Fury has been consider one of the best movies of the summer. It is the fourth installation in George Miller's Mad Max franchise. The most interesting thing about this release, however, is that although it is the fourth movie of the series, it come almost thirty years after the release of the last movie in the franchise. The development, financing, and eventual production of Fury Road is incredibly interesting because although almost everything went wrong, it still became a successful movie, both critically and in the box office. A decade after the release of the third installment of the Mad Max franchise, Beyond the Thunderdome, Warner Bros. began to develop a Mad Max TV show. However, at the time, the 90s, a TV show that violent would never have been aired, and as such, they began to focus on a fourth Mad Max movie, set for the late 90s. (Meslow) In 2001, 9/11 derailed the movie for financial reasons. In Miller's own words, "'Everything closed down, shipping closed down, insurance closed down and most of all the American dollar collapsed by about 25% within a few weeks." Additionally, the studio decided that such bleak times called for happier movies, because of this, Miller decided to work on Happy Feet instead. (Bravin) By 2003, the Mad Max movie was set to begin filming in Namibia. However, the location was determined to be a security risk, causing it to be delayed once again. Digital Film Technology Revolutionizes the Film Industry With the release of Star Wars: Episode I the Phantom Menace, in March of 1999, digital film technology officially filtered itself in to main–stream Hollywood. Digital film technology is the latest and probably most revolutionizing new technology to hit Hollywood. The use of digital film allows for infinite editing capabilities and endless benefits to distribution and special effects. The use of digital film allows for producers to add in extras, produce stunts, and even create false people with the click of a mouse. Directors and producers are allowed to let their imaginations run wild. This ease of use attracts filmmakers to convert to a digital format. The skill and cost of technology which goes into creating these effects, in return creates jobs for others. Digital film not only enhances effects, but its special effects capabilities are so great, that it is also beginning to replace people. For example, in Titanic, released in the winter of 1997/1998, false people are created to enhance the reality and excitement of the scene. The movie shows a scene which the ship tilts completely vertical. Passengers of the ship slide into the water, and fall from the rails of the enormous ship. These passengers add drama and reality to the scene. The passengers vividly dictate the harshness of the situation. Though these unfortunate passengers add a wealth of reality to the scene, they are not even real people. Creating this scene on a standard film format with stunt doubles, would have been difficult and time consuming. They were instead created with digital film technology. Digital film technology erased the need for stunt doubles. Though real people were not employed to be these characters, jobs behind the scenes were instead utilized. Creators of the digital passengers were employed directly, and indirectly, business and jobs were harvested from the digital equipment used. Even though physical people were ... Her father was the son of a slave and her master, who also happened to be the brother of the two famous abolitionist GrimkГ© sisters: Angelina and Sarah. GrimkГ©'s mother, Sarah, was from a prominent, white middle class family; she left GrimkГ© and her African American husband due to racial pressure from her white family and, as a result, GrimkГ© was raised entirely by her father. Although she was quite involved in the betterment of people of color, as can be seen by a number of her poems and plays that discussed racial issues, she did not want race to define who she was as a writer. "Feeling constrained by the label 'race writer', they opted for what they considered more universal themes appropriate to the art of poetry and insisted on the freedom to follow their individual muse." (Honey/Bloom, 225–226). GrimkГ© also used nature to symbolically represent racial issues, ranging from racial injustice to racial pride, in her poems. Although she did not want her work to be defined as 'race writing', she did understand, especially since she herself came from a biracial background, the importance of ending racism and supporting the betterment of people of color. One poem that uses nature in such a manner, mainly that of racial pride, is the poem "At April": "Toss your gay heads,/ Brown girl trees;/ Toss your lovely gay heads;/ Shake your brown slim bodies;/ Stretch your brown slim arms;/ Stretch your brown slim toes;/ Who knows better than we,/ With the dark, dark bodies,/ What it means/ When April comes a–laughing and a–weeping/ Once again/ At our hearts?" • 17. Holocaust And The Moving Image Moves Through The Five... To answer the questions formulated through the symposium, Holocaust and the Moving Image moves through the five areas of its concentration, with the first section devoted to Film as Witness. This section uses a number of still photographs taken from personal and archival films created by the liberators of the Nazi camps to demonstrate how these films were acquired. Of interest is the idea that the liberating soldiers initially charged with simple document(ary) filming soon learned to develop and respond to a narrative of suffering and humanity that has earmarked subsequent films used in the study of the Holocaust. Care is taken within the section, to authenticate the images and to explain their content in such a way as to avoid pathos and sensationalism – although both are inherent to the subject matter. The editors of Holocaust and the Moving Image use careful editing and allow the reader to consciously place themselves in the space of the soldiers collecting those first images. The conversation surrounding the ideas and the film used as witness does stand up to the efforts of authentication, and verifies the historical moment, though as an anthology, Holocaust and the Moving Image is unable to provide an arena for sustained arguments on conditions of film collection and production. In looking at film as propaganda, as presented in this text, this reader found irony amid the facts of documented Holocaust horror, where questions are raised as to race, class, and artistic ... Digital formats have gradually replaced the film for many reasons: space–efficient, inexpensive, immediate and unlimited (Pavlik & McIntosh 2014, pp. 223 – 224). This is because physical films not only cost more but are also inconvenient to print, deliver and preserve. Meanwhile, the transfer of data by using digital tools is extremely fast and easy, whether through a computer or via satellite. For example, traditional types of film reels, such as the 35mm or 70mm, have given place for high–capacity hard drives (Dixon & Foster 2011, p. 22). Pavlik & McIntosh (2014) also emphasize that while the digital data still need to be kept in a physical storage, it is still far more space–saving than that needed by an analog form. Furthermore, it is totally free to duplicate the digital movies and send them to distributors. The movie industry, along with other mass media industries, has become more democratized and fragmented due to the use of digital technology. She rightly points out that films nowadays have to really do something special, namely violate "the norms and practices which now govern movie–making everywhere in the capitalist and would–be capitalist world" in order for us to "admire" them (Sontag, S. 1997). Cinema has moved in a more commercial direction, concentrating on quantity, not quality, rather than remaining purely an art form. What this means for cinema today is that a movie is less likely to stand the test of time and leave a lasting impression in our mind because all they are good for now is their entertainment value. Another point raised by Sontag was that cinema in its' early days had a unique ability to В‘kidnap' its' audience. She felt that "seated in the dark among anonymous strangersВ…you learned how to walk, to smoke, to kiss, to fight, to grieve" as well as "losing yourself in faces, in lives that were not yours." • 29. Analysis Of Raoul Peck 's ' French Cinema ' Diel Powell Dr. Kirkpatrick December 14th, 2016 National French Cinema Raoul Peck France is the birthplace of cinema and is responsible for many of its significant contributions to the art form worldwide, including the filmmaking process itself. I've learned about the greats but haven't been introduced to a man quite as distinguished and relatable to myself as a young black aspiring creator. Early Life: Although not born in France, Raoul Peck has become a notable director and screenwriter and has left a memorable impact in the film industry with his cinematic adaptations of reality. From taxi driver, to Minister of culture, to honorary award winning director, Raoul Peck has experienced the world in ways few will ever have the chance to. Just as he thought his life would revolve around international affairs at the United Nations, he created a bigger platform to spread the news about foreign relations. His documentaries and films have been about real people and he believes film can try and save our histories, our memories whilst guiding society in a better direction. Peck had an unusual but interesting childhood upbringing. In 1953 he was born in Port–au–Prince, Haiti however, at the age of 8, his family sought asylum in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Peck's tutelage spreads across 2 continents and the caribbean islands. He attended schools in Kinshasa, DRC, (Brooklyn) New York, United States, OrlГ©ans, France, and Berlin, Germany. • 32. Vertical integration in studio system Essay Vertical integration in studio system The term "vertical integration" refers to the structure of a marketplace, which is integrated (rather than segregated) at a variety of crucial levels. In the case of the motion picture industry, the studio system established a market in which the studios owned production facilities, distribution outlets, and theaters. In other words, the studios controlled every level of the marketplace from the top down, from production to exhibition. "Vertical integration" began in the 1910s and inspired the postwar consolidation of the studio system as national distribution companies, such as Paramount merged with production companies, such as Famous Players and Lasky and subsequently began purchasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The majors owned only a fraction of the nation's theaters, e.g. 3000 of the 18000. But these theaters were large, first run houses and located in big cities. Therefore they generated 70% of the box office receipts. The majors ensured the profitability of their own theaters and controlled the independents by instituting a series of special distribution practices. These were known as block booking, blind bidding, runs, zones, and clearances. Block booking refers to the rental of films in large quantity. If exhibitors wanted to rent films, they have to rent the entire yearly output. And since they contracted with the distributors before the film has been made, the distributors were forced to bid for them without seeing them, a procedure called blind bidding. This way the studios could sell the bad pictures with good. As a result of the system the new films will be first rented to the first run theaters of which the majority was owned by the studios, and then its shown in the second run and sub run theaters after a clearance time of about 7–30 days (to renew demand). Distribution is also guided by a system of zones; only one theater in any particular area is allowed to show a new picture. The dismantling of the studio system began just before World War II when the U.S. Department of justice's Antitrust Division filed suit against the 8 studios for the use of their monopolistic methods

  • 34. Film Analysis : American Honey By Andrea Arnold One of the first things I learned in cinema class was that the size of the screen can play a huge role in the way the viewer experiences a film. American Honey by Andrea Arnold felt like one of those movies that was tailor made to be experienced to its full potential on the big screen. If I saw this movie at home on a smaller screen, there would be so many things that I would not be able to experience because of the limitation on–screen size. Andrea Arnold uses the technique of viewing cinema as a window to give a better experience and outlook for the audience. Using cinema as a window gives the viewers a special ocular access to whatever is going on throughout the film (Elsasser 14). This is usually a rectangular view which helps the ... Furthermore, Arnold uses cinema as a window and creates an open film. It seemed like at any part of the movie you could turn the camera off, but the events that were going on would still occur and everything would still be the same in the diegetic world. This tells us Arnold created the diegetic world to be its own separate world where everything occurs according to the characters, it extends far beyond the limit of the image (Elsasser 18), it is not a world that is meant to be created just for the purpose of the movie. This is most evident in the last scene of the film where Star is in the lake and she jumps the screen goes still and the credits roll in. While I was watching the movie and this sequence occurred, I was expecting more to happen, but then Star's image froze and then the credits came and I was shocked for a bit, but realizing how Arnold set up this film and the techniques that she used it was not really a surprise. The sequence that occurred reminded of the ending scene in Mediterranea, it was the scene where Arnold tells the audience their role in the film is over and cuts off their access from the diegetic world. The stable camera signalled the ending for the viewer. Even though the movie has ended it is made clear that the events going on in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. What Makes A Fast Food Restaurant? Ancient Rome and Greece had thermopoliums, which is where ready–to–eat food was served for travelers. Unfortunately, when the volcanoes erupted in Pompeii, the thermopoliums were destroyed. The thermopolium is often compared to the modern day fast food restaurant, due to the already prepared food and quick service. Everyone has eaten fast food in their life, but do they know the history and consequences of choosing the fast food life? White Castle, which opened in Wichita, Kansas, in 1921 is credited as the first fast food restaurant. White Castle's founders decided to change how the public perceived hamburgers, since many people saw hamburgers as low quality. For this reason, they built their restaurant so that the customers could see their food being prepared. The term fast food was not widely used when White Castle first opened. The actual term fast food was recognized in the Merriam–Webster dictionary in 1951. A fast food restaurant is generally known for its fast food cuisine, minimal table service, and quick service. The customers place their own orders and take care of picking up their own condiments, utensils, etc. The Curb Service started as a novelty at an A&W shop, but soon spread nationwide. In 1955, April 15, the first McDonald's restaurant opened in Des Plaines, Illinois. The first assembly line was introduced in 1937. • 40. The Great Depression After WW1 the Great Depression had a very late impact on the major film companies in France, when it did, it unfortunately caused several film studios to go bankrupt, then in the late 1920's to 1930's many small film companies and groups emerged giving birth to the tendency called poetic realism. Because the large companies who made films with a focus on making money were gone the filmmakers and artists were able to concern themselves with the art of film, they often took poetic innovations that we can associate with impressionism or surrealism and combined them to create a more realistic style of narrative filmmaking. Therefore these films stylistic techniques have been influenced by the political and economical historical contexts that took place in France that has enhanced these films aesthetic. The growth of political awareness had then reflected in the films of this time, thus the enormous historical impact that effected France's films and industry. The question can be asked, how did these social, political and economic issues of France at the time come thought the arts and cinema and start a very impactful thread of films. Before WW1 and The Great Depression France dominated international film screens, especially in 1929 when the coming of sound really boosted their industry, people were extremely interested in hearing the French dialogue. Watching a Movie at Home vs. Theater Essay example Movies are one of the biggest entertainment sources for anyone in the world, and for the same reason film industry is the largest of any industries with India making the most number of movies per year than any other country. People watch movies at home on their television or in the theaters on a big screen where the film is been displayed with a movie projector onto a large projection screen at the front of the auditorium. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can be easier for parents to exercise their control over children if they are watching a movie at home. If a movie scene is not appropriate for a child, then they have the choice of fast forwarding it or stopping the movie whereas one does not have that choice in the theater. Movie theaters make it more difficult on parent's pockets by having a huge variety and display of goodies for children. The food items are overly priced in a theater and that could be a big dent in the pocket if added on to the price of entrance ticket. Some theaters give people and option to go movie hopping where one can see as many movies with one theater entrance purchase. This is very economical for people who wait for all their favorite movies to accumulate and watch all of them together in day. This is difficult to do if one wants to wait for the television channels to telecast them. There is a broad variety of types of theaters available– conventional theaters, IMAX and drive in's. Something that I believe really took away from this movie would be the editing. The transition between scenes is quite frankly abrupt and distracting; at the end of several scenes, the entire screen would intensify to a bloody red color, which forced me to look away because my eyes hurt from looking at it. Another bad case of editing can be seen more towards the end of the film. When Francois finds Therese's corpse by the side of the pond, he embraces her in his arms, with his head on her chest devastated. When I first watched this scene, I thought there was some sort of glitch with the system because the scene started replaying about ten times. It appears that Agnes Varda's intention was to make this scene as emotional and dramatic as possible, but when a clip is replayed constantly it can be misinterpreted as comedic; everyone watching, including myself, burst out in laughter when we saw this part of the movie. From my perspective, another flaw in Happiness that made it a second–rate film was the plot. I was confused by various parts of the film and even after the film was finished, I had so many questions left. From just the opening scenes of this movie, it is quite obvious that Francois and Therese are deeply in love with each other; often times they will express their love for each other through physical touch and sexual intercourse. Films like "Duel in The Sun", and "Red River" are what preceded films like "Easy Rider". These films came into being and were financially successful because they temporarily relieved the fears aroused by a recognition of social and political conflicts. While studios suffered through a box–office slump from 1947 to 1968, the western proved to be a consistently if modestly bankable genre. The studios used the rating system less to regulate or censor the content of their films than to differentiate among products to advertise their pictures better and target audiences more precisely. 1968 was also a pivotal year in American social and political history. It saw two political assassinations (of the civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and the presidential candidate Robert F. • 44. The Greatest Day Of My Life Everyone needs some form of escape from reality. While this varies from person to person, with the entertainment business booming, it is safe to infer that many find their comfort with movie theatres. Many of these people like to be engulfed by the story of their movie. My escape, however, comes from just being inside the theatre. There is something magical about theatres that keeps bringing me back. The first time I vividly remember going to the movies was when the second Harry Potter movie released. I finally watched the first movie on our brand new DVD player and read the four books that had been released. When the Saturday came to go to the Edwards in Irvine, I woke up extra early to make terrible pancakes for everybody (this is also a time when I wanted to be a chef). I begged my parents to take to me to the nearby 7–11 to buy all the candy that we were going to sneak in the theatre. I knew that this was going to be the greatest day of my life. While I know now my parents were reluctant to spend all that money, I know that today they would not change a thing. Going to the movies in the early 2000's for my family meant more than just watching a movie. With my mother working two jobs and my father deploying every other year to different parts of the world as a Marine, these Saturdays were a very rare occasion.
