The Dead Poets Society
The movie Dead Poets Society is about a teacher who comes to an academy school to teach a
english class. His name is John Keating and he is one of the main characters in the movie. Mr
Keating was an alumni of the school he is now teaching at. There were many different lessons that
the movie taught. The first lesson is to Suck the marrows of life. The second lesson is to do your
own things and be independent. The third lesson is to look at life from different angles. The purpose
of this movie was to show people better ways and different perspectives on life.
One lesson that was expressed in the movie was to get the most out of your day as possible and
don't waste time on things that won't benefit you in the future. An example from the movie is when
Neil went into acting because he knew that's what he wanted to do instead of listening to his father
and going to harvard to study and become a doctor. Another lesson that was expressed in the movie
was to follow your own path and don't be a follower. In the movie the boys separated themselves
from everyone else in the school and snuck off into a cave and met together and created the dead
poets society. The third lesson is to look at life from different perspectives and angles. An example
from the movie is when Mr. Keating makes the boys stand on top of his ... Show more content on

He was showing how his style of teaching was different than all the other professors. He was the
only teacher to let the kids think for themselves and be independent. The ideas behind romanticism
and transcendentalism are that everyone is their own person. Transcendentalists believe that human
feelings and freedom is a very important part in your life. Throughout the movie, he shows them not
to rely on what the professors believe and what others think, but to think for yourself and do
everything your own

The Review Dead Poet Society (Weir, 1989) is a movie about a shy teenager named Todd Anderson,
who has to live up to his older overachiever brother's reputation. Todd goes on to attend the same
school where his brother graduated as a valedictorian–The Welton Academy for boys. The semester
begins with an orientation assembly speech from the unyielding Headmaster Nolan, who highlights
the academy's four pillars: Tradition, Discipline, Excellence and Honor. Todd meets Neil, his
roommate. Later on, both teenagers find out that they are both living a similar situation involving
the constant pressure from their parents to succeed. Following, the teenagers get to meet their
conventional teachers. However, they also met a teacher whose teaching method ... Show more

The Bible teaches us in Matthew 6:33, "To seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you" English Standard Version. This is true for me because as a
coach I need to believe genuinely in my client's vision, just as God believed in me when He gave his
only son to die for our sins. God's genuine act of selflessness is a reminder that we as well, should
carry on that message to those we come across in this lifetime. The movie was truly inspirational in
all aspects of the word. I would not modify anything in this movie. I will integrate what I learned
from this movie to help my clients through the transformational process, but more importantly, to
help them believe in themselves in order for them to take charge of their lives. The most valuable
lesson I took from this film was that we should believe in ourselves just as God believe in us.
Perhaps the biggest lesson I took away from this movie is that believing in ourselves regardless of
what other people think is necessary for a long–term

Kerry O'Neill English 15 Dead Poet's Society Movie Review Peter Weir's, "Dead Poets Society" is
about an unorthodox, inspirational and frankly an unusual English teacher and his students. Set in
1959 at Welton Academy , a fictional elite Vermont boarding school. Follows an English teacher,
and how he challenges his students to question traditional views by techniques such as standing on
their desks to "look at things in a different way." Although unavoidable that this intelligent and
brilliant teacher will be fired from teaching at this school, it was extremely touching when his
students stood on their desks to stand up for their admired teacher. Weir's film incorporates a lot
about poetry with a lot of great lines from former poets included within the film itself. At the end of
the school semester, an extraordinary teacher's goal in the poetry course, would be to leave the
students loving poetry, nevertheless, at the end of the course, the only thing the students really end
up loving, is the teacher himself. This marvelous movie stars Robin Williams as the whimsical John
Keating who is new to Welton Academy to teach an English class. For the entirety of the movie,
Williams undertakes a fine job of portraying a sharp–witted, well– educated, clever young man.
Along with his well–liked personality and amusing impressions of John Wayne performing
Shakespeare. One aspect that seemed to lack, is the overall depth to William's character. Keating
seemed to be more of a plot

Themes In Dead Poets Society
The film Dead Poets Society directed by Peter Weir and the novel Everything, Everything by Nicola
Yoon, explore the issues that the protagonists face during their years of adolescent development.
The brutal mechanism parental pressures has for great fulfillment in life is superbly portrayed with
the utilization of setting, cinematography and irony throughout the film and novel. Thus, as the
protagonists tolerate relentless pressures from their parents, it triggers the thoughts of Neil (DPS)
and Madeline (EE) to become rebellious, as they realise for the first time that they have aspirations
for themselves. Hence the literary techniques of character development and symbolism were
exploited in both texts to present the theme of rebellion. Therefore, the aforementioned themes
commendably represent the chaos adolescents experience throughout their years of development
and the ways it impacts their future. Both Yoon and Weir demonstrate the consequences of parental
pressures on a teenager's development by emphasising the feelings of restriction experienced by the
protagonists. However, one explores in an old fashioned society and the other in a modern society.
Exploring the purpose of using the setting of a private school, depicts the director's intention to
showcase tradition and discipline of the film's general setting. In contrast to Yoon's utilisation of a
sterilised, modern home that emphasises cleanliness and order, because "If [Madeline's] life were a

Dead Poets Society Analysis
The film "Dead Poets Society" takes place at Welton Academy in 1959. The film starts with a
traditional ceremony to start off a new semester for seniors at Welton. At this ceremony it's
established that there are four pillars of ideology that the students must follow: excellence, honor,
tradition, and discipline. The headmaster of Welton, Mr. Nolan explains that these ideologies have
made Welton, one of highest esteemed prep schools in the Untied Stated. At the end of the
ceremony, the new English teacher, John Keating, is introduced. Mr. Keating was an honor graduate
at Welton and has returned from teaching at Chester School in London. The film then introduces the
characters that later make up the dead poet society. Neil Perry, Knox Overstreet, Charlie Dalton,
Richard Cameron, Meeks and Pitts which have been going to Welton for years. Then, a new student
shows up, Todd Anderson. On the first day of class Mr. Keating explains the most important
statement in the film "cape diem" this translates to "seize the day". Keating's unorthodox teaching
methods leads to the bottom line of this film that the students should act as individuals, think for
themselves, and "live life to the fullest". Mr. John Keating's unorthodox teaching methods
influences the actions that move the film forward. These teachings need to be explained to give the
boys' actions a higher meaning. On Keating first day he enters whistling the tune 1812 Overture.
Then, proceeds to take the boys out into a hall that displays many achievements in Welton's past.
Keating tells the boys that they may refer to him as "Oh Captain, my Captain". This was composed
by Walt Whitman to honor Abraham Lincoln. Just as Lincoln, Keating we be the leader that inspires
the boy to make a change. This when quote "cape diem" is first introduced and shows the boy to
think for themselves. The next day, Keating starts by having one of the boys read the into the
textbook. This shows that poetry has a mathematical plot to find the quality of the work. Keating
calls Mr. Pritchard's idea of as poetry excrement. Then, instructs the boys to rip out the intro of the
book as poetry is not about laying pipe. He demonstrates that the boys must think for themselves.

Dead Poets Society Dead Poets Society Hysterical Text
One person's interpretation of a story is always different than another's. Some of us may see things
that are not being shown to us. Dead Poets Society, in author Tania Modleski's eyes has taken on a
manifestation larger than the author herself. This story is not what the author will have you believe,
whereas the true story was hidden in the misconception of Modleski's beliefs. The sexual content,
homoerotic tensions, and antiauthoritarian behavior, seemed to come from the author's wishful
thinking as opposed to the reality of the film.
In the film a homosexual theme could not be seen. When Mr. Keating came to the school to teach,
he did not insist on being called oh ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is one character that committed suicide according to Modleski because his father would not
let him play a fairy in a play. What this character was trying to show was that he had finally broken
free of his father's decisions on how, and what, he should do. He auditioned for a play and got the
part all by himself, without his fathers approval. This was something that he wanted to do, and was
good at it. When his father forbid him to pursue acting, even second to him being a doctor, this was
all he could take. Him putting his fairy crown on the open window ledge, just before committing
suicide, symbolized the freeing of the actor inside, like an offering to a higher being. The boys in
Welton Boarding School share what all boys their age share while at school. There are no signs of
homoerotic tensions present. There are signs of groups forming and friendships being made. When
they decided to form the Dead Poets Society it was a normal male bonding experience. An all male
boarding school does not mean that they are all homosexuals who are crying out for recognition.
The movie did not illustrate any homosexual tension between the boys at any time in the movie.
When Mr. Keating told the boys to rip out he introduction of the book he was trying to illustrate that
writing poetry was not like reading a recipe. Poetry was feeling what you are writing, and it was

Dead Poets Society Analysis
In the film, The Dead Poets Society, a strict, all boys prep school is overturned once the new english
teacher arrives. Mr. Keating, the original founder of the dead poets society, encourages the boys to
ditch conformity and pursue their true interests in life, much to the enragement of the parents and
school. The behaviors the boys begin to display can be explained by psychologists Erich Fromm and
Doris Lessing. Both psychologists examine humankind's tendency to conform and obey to a higher
power, which can be seen in the film, The Dead Poets Society. As the higher powers such as
Headmaster Nolan and Neil's father see their authority being threatened by Mr. Keating, the
destruction of hierarchy in Welton Academy begins. Although the boys are becoming happier with
their new found independence, the parents and school refuse to allow their happiness to ruin the
dictatorship and they ultimately pay the consequence. The Dead Poets Society demonstrates an
irrational authority and the mandate of an unwavering authoritarian conscience, and how the
excessive control used over young teens is more damaging than any form of their free thinking.
When the film begins, there is a sense of uniformity all around. From the identical school uniforms
the boys don, to their timed march with the flags into the auditorium. The academy which the boys
attend is obviously strict and only allows the old set of traditions to be taught to them. After a long
day of going through the same, mundane

Dead Poets Society Analysis
The film, Dead Poets society, shows us the lives of the boys at Welton Academy after the hiring of
Mr. Keating as the new english teacher.Throughout his employment we see Mr. Keating largely
impacts the lives of the boy in a positive manner. Mr. Keating gives the boys a taste of freedom, free
from the oppression of parents and schools and lets them develop as individuals. His classes are
filled with many wise and valuable life lessons that largely influenced the boy. The boys at Welton
also discover a hidden passion for poetry through Mr. Keating's unique and engaging lessons.
Keating's emphasises on freedom and originality raises many eyebrows at Welton, a school that
celebrates tradition above everything else, however, the boys have much to gain from his unique
classes. Mr. Keating uses his unconventional ideas to negate the 4 pillars of Welton Academy. He
represents the progressive ideas that were rejected in 1950's England. Mr. Keating classes of page
ripping, ball kicking, and standing on desks, contrasts greatly with the teaching methods of other
teachers, such as Mr. McAllister, who opposes the individuality and freedom of young adolescent
minds and embraces conformity. Mr. Keating's classes provides the boys with a form of escapism,
allowing the boys to discover new things and eventually "learn to think for (themselves)." For
instance, during one of Mr. Keating's lessons the boys are taken out onto the field to read their
poems, the camera tracks Mr. Keating as the

Dead Poets Society Conformity
Literary Essay – Dead Poets Society
Bill Beattie once said, "The aim of education should be to teach us how to
think rather than what to think – rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for
ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men." All too often, however,
individual thoughts are crushed by the powerful weight of conformity. In the film Dead Poets
Society, conformity exercises it's influence and the results prove disastrous for some. For others, the
effect of conformity compels them towards individual strength and the discovery of one's true self.
Modern education is one of the largest "offenders" when it comes to
conformity, and that point is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perhaps they were clapping because everyone else was clapping, or perhaps they were just having a
good time. However, it cannot be disputed that the group conformed without thinking.
All too often, the words of the textbook are considered undisputed fact. All chemistry
textbooks will list the elements with the same symbols and all Latin textbooks will list
approximately the same translations. The poetry textbook, written by a Dr. Pritchett, attempts to
lump words that are meant to touch the heart into the same factual categories of math and the
sciences. Can Dr. Pritchett's method of analyzing poetry by graphing its importance and perfection
be used to measure what one feels? More importantly, is Dr. Pritchett's method the only method that
one must use when measuring the greatness of poetry and can poetry be looked at using only the
mind and not the heart?
Mr. Keating did not feel that poetry was meant to be analyzed using measurable
techniques but rather through the feelings of one's heart. He summed up his feelings on Dr.
Pritchett's method of measuring the greatness of poetry in one word,
"Excrement."
He took his class on a journey of self–discovery, a journey where they learned that there is
not always a right answer or a wrong one. In order to find one's true self, one must learn to resist
conformity and walk one's own way, as was illustrated in the lesson out in the courtyard. He taught

Conformity In Dead Poets Society
"Carpe diem, seize the day, boys, seize the day." Mr. Keating told this quote to the boys almost
every day and he wanted them to be their own individuals. While watching the movie, Dead Poets
Society, we realize how important it is to have individuality and to not conform to everyone else's
normal ways to live. The Dead Poets Society was filmed by Peter Weir in the year 1989, starring
boys attending a preparatory school, who are being forced to ideas of conformity, not being able to
have their own ideals, and dealing with their overbearing parents. Conformity is a huge deal back in
1959, you couldn't talk back to your teachers, your parents, or anyone for that matter. Conformity
can have a negative undertone in school because students are supposed to be individual and should
not have to be the same as everyone else. Students should be able to act how they want to be who
they are. Children in school should be given their own opportunity to do what they please. Non–
conformity can have a positive undertone in school because not being conformed to everyone else's
norm, you are a special individual. Being able to do as you want is good to becoming your own
person and not being like everyone else in school. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Never let life pass you by. Take all opportunities that life provides and live life to the fullest. The
movie "Dead Poets Society" is about young men comprehending all that life has to offer. Welton
Academy is an all–boys school that focuses on preserving order and instructing students on what the
academy believes is important in life. Welton has narrowed their priorities into what they've entitled
the four pillars, tradition, discipline, excellence, and honor. Students are expected to keep order and
not violate any of the pillars. With this, all of the boys that graduate from Welton adopt a reputation
of well–behaved and mature young men. The students are not exposed to a normal high school
environment and are taught strictly from a textbook. This is until a new English teacher, John
Keating, is employed at the school. Mr. Keating is the kink in the four pillars to Welton Academy.
Instead of teaching from the text book, he tells the boys one phrase that makes them think
differently, "Seize the day". He revealed to the boys that there is more in life than what is being
revealed to them. "Dead Poets Society" contains the theme of seizing the day or not letting life pass
by. This relates to the movie because Mr. Keating exposes his students to events that they have
never witnessed before and reveals all the opportunities life has to offer. The movie "Dead Poets

Transcendentalism In Dead Poets Society
Self–conformity, simplicity, nonconformity, and the boys from the Dead Poets Societydead poets'
society find themselves walking down the path of transcendentalism with the help of their new
teacher Mr. Keating. The Transcendentalist believed in making change with literature to shape
society. In the movie, Dead Poets Society illustrates the Transcendental truths of self–reliance and
nonconformity. The philosophy of Transcendentalism can have both positive and negative effects on
people, which path you choose to follow is up to you. Transcendentalism is a philosophical, literary
movement during the nineteenth century, which focused one perception and the individual
consciences. Transcendentalism gained support of writers such as Emerson, Thoreau, the
Transcendentalists believed in self–conformity, trust one's self, simplicity, and nNonconformity. One
truth, Mr. Keating teaches the boys, is how to think for themselves, and to be their own individual.
In one scene, in the Schoolyard, he shows the boys how they act the same. It was the way they were
taught to be, but someone who wants to step out of line and change their lives. Mr. Keating explains
how this is conformity. Mr. Keating wants them to express their creative ways, and to for
themselves. Mr. Keating wants the boys to "beat of their own drum (Dead Poets Society)."(Dead

Dead Poets Society Analysis
The Dead Poets Society was made in 1989 and was directed by Peter Weir. It has taken place in
Vermont during 1959 at a very strict and traditional boarding school called Welton, or "Hell–ton"
Academy. This school is a prestigious place for white young men. The film was a major hit
receiving critical acclaim and popularity in the box office. This movie is so wonderful because John
Keating, played by Robin Williams, portrays a very nontraditional teacher that makes his students
share in his love of poetry. Mr. Keating is a man who is true to himself and teaches his students this.
Mr. Keating tried to take the boys away from the traditional classroom setting and sings and jokes
with them. On the other hand, one of the teachers in the school Mr. McAllister is the stereotypical
traditional teacher. He wants the boys to sit in rows, listen to whatever a teacher says, and not to
listen to their inner selves. Mr. McAllister tells Mr. Keating during the beginning of the movie he is
"taking a risk by telling the boys they can be artists". During the second class Mr. Keating asks them
to do something they have never done before, rip out a huge portion in their textbooks The boys
discuss how "weird, yet different" he is. He disagrees with the math terms being used to describe the
art of poetry. The boys are shocked and all of them stutter then feel empowered by the freedom they
are given. He lets the boys stand on his desks to let them see the world from a different view,

Dead Poets Society Reflection
The Dead Poets Society is a tale about a small secrete club established in an all–male preparatory
school. In the beginning of the movie the school's newest English teacher arrives, Mr. Keating, a
former student at the school. The students discover his teaching methods are rather untraditional as
he would have his students tear pages out of the textbook to march around the courtyard. One of the
main lessons of Mr. Keating's lecture was the aspect of carpe diem or seize the day. In the beginning
of the movie, several boys find Mr. Keating's yearbook and discover that he was in The Dead Poets
Society. This club was reintroduced by several boys: Neil Perry, Todd Anderson, Charlie Dalton,
Knox Overstreet, Steven Meeks, Richard Cameron, and Gerard Pitts. Once the Dead Poets Society
is established each boy starts on their own ambitious adventure regarding love or their dreams.
When each boy is tested with one of their adventures they think of Mr. Keating's words, carpe diem,
and they peruse their challenge. In the story Todd Anderson struggles with his shyness and the idea
that his thoughts are meaningless. While others such as Knox Overstreet fall in love with a girl who
he should never peruse. Neil Perry, disobeys his father and tries to peruse his dream of becoming an
actor however, when Neil's father condemns the idea of Neil performing in the play. At the end of
the movie, the boys achieve their ambitions. Neil performs in the play however; Neil's father is

Analysis Of Dead Poets Society
A) Overview
The 1989 movie, Dead Poets Society, features a group of boys attending a private boarding school,
the Welton Academy. The central conflict of the movie stems from the clash between educational
approaches. The movie uses the educational conflict as an engine to propel the plot and to explore
and develop the characters.
The Welton Academy's education style is most definitely traditional. The school's educational
approach is revealed by Headmaster Nolan three minutes into the movie as he states the "Four
Pillars of Welton"–– "Tradition. Honor. Discipline. Excellence." The word Tradition is literally
engraved in the schools pillars. This is similar to Hirsch's theory of 'Cultural Literacy' a conservative
theory of education ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Keating about 12 minutes into the movie he whispers in the boys' ears the words 'carpe diem' which
in Latin means "seize the day." Mr. Keating embodies a teaching pedagogy of equality between
teacher and student in the classroom, teaching students to think independently and critically, and
challenge conventional thought. The boys seize the day by creating a club called The Dead Poets
Society. Mr. Keating's progressive pedagogy thus inspires a radical club. This is the first step in the
boys' move from conservatism to progressivism and ultimately to a radical crisis. The club's
radicalness peaks when a member, Charlie Dalton demands that girls be allowed to attend Welton
Academy. He causes a full campus meeting where he mocks Headmaster Nolan by holding a
telephone out and instructing him that God has been calling and that he should answer. As one could
expect, the conservative headmaster does not respond well. Headmaster Nolan interviews each
student individually until one student, Richard Cameron, turns in the rest of the club to save himself
from expulsion. This demonstrates how a new approach can threaten more established norms,
followed by a retaliatory backlash.
The final major scene of the movie occurs after one of the boys, Neil Perry, defies his father by
acting as Puck in A Midsummer's Night Dream. This radical step leads his oppressive conservative
father to threaten to send him send him

Dead Poet Society : The Critique Of The Dead Poets Society
"Now is the time to seize the day" is the main premise behind Dead Poets Society. This movie is all
about helping young men to find who they really are. This is the way that John Keating, the teacher,
wants his boys to know, he teaches the boys that anything they want to do they could. He brings
these kids hope.
"Captain", as the boy call him, is different from the other teachers because he is less strict and more
real, he is less focused on grades and more on setting the kids up for the real world. His teaching
style would be considered as Essentialist. He is setting the scene for these kids to stand up for
themselves, for example in the Dead Poets Society, he encourages Neil to follow his dream of
acting. With Neil he is unknowingly giving him the courage to stand up to his father and giving him
the courage to go his own way. Another example is he set them up to start The Dead Poets Society
again and with that he set them up to find their own paths in life. The school is a boarding school for
boys to be trained up in the ways of higher education and to train the boys for a "real job". They
have four major traits Tradition, Honor, Discipline, and Excellence. The attitudes of the staff and
administration are those of snobs! They look and act like someone who thinks they are better than
everyone. Except this teacher the "Captain" as they call him is the most humble teacher, one that is
approachable and encouraging, he makes them step out of their comfort zone, for

John Donne: A Medieval Man but A Metaphysical Poet
When examining writings from the Baroque period, John Donne is widely acknowledged as the
leader of metaphysical poetry. While there are other well–known writers who made this style of
poetry popular, Donne is by far the most discussed and most analyzed. The term metaphysical
developed from John Dryden describing Donne's work as "[affecting] the metaphysics, not only in
his satires, but in his amorous verses, where nature should only reign"(Dryden). After this analysis
of Donne's work, others such as Samuel Johnson began to use metaphysical when describing not
only Donne's poetry, but also the other poetry from this period, which was written similarly.
According to The Oxford English Dictionary, metaphysical is defined as "senses relating to
philosophical speculation or intellectual abstraction" (Simpson). In other words, this poetry is
beyond the natural; it takes something physical and pushes the meaning from natural to something
philosophical. T.S. Eliot argues that the term metaphysical was only used for Johnson to describe
John Donne's difficult imagery, and therefore we should reconsider using the term so loosely to
describe a larger group of poets (Eliot 249). Whether one agree with Eliot or not, upon delving
solely into Donne's poetry, one will see that his work is in fact metaphysical. What John Donne does
in his conceits is take something concrete, and

The movie Dead Poets Society is about a group of boys that go to Welton Academy, a boys–only
private school. A new English teacher, Mr. Keating, starts teaching them about poetry, and how to
think for themselves. The boys aren't sure what to think of Mr. Keating and look him up only to find

boys restarted the club. Neil realizes that he doesn't want to be a doctor like his father wants, so he
auditions for a play. This causes a lot of problems for all of the boys because they all start to realize
that they are unhappy as well. The movie Dead Poets Society and Self Reliance by Ralph Emerson

Are parents abusing the power they have over their children? There are parents who involve
themselves in their child's life so much the child has no say in anything. Being limited or neglected
from pursuing one's goal can lead to depression. Something similar to this takes place in the film
Dead Poets Society. In this film a character named Neil is prohibited from pursuing his goals of
becoming an actor by his father. This results in at least one argument found in the film. In fact, three
arguments can be identified in Dead Poets Society. One argument found in Dead Poets Society is
that Mr. Keating should not have told the boys about the Dead Poets Society. This is supported when
the boys (Neil, Todd, Knox, Charlie, Cameron, and Pitts) spoke with Mr. Keating about the Dead
Poet Society. Pleased with the boy's interest with the Dead Poets Society he says: "The Dead Poets
were dedicated to sucking the marrow out of life. [...]You see we 'd gather at the old Indian cave and
take turns reading from Thoreau, Whitman, Shelley; the biggies" (Dead Poets Society). Here, Mr.
Keating without knowing encouraged the boys to re–establish the Dead Poets Society, leading to the
boys sneaking out of their rooms after curfew. An act like this can lead to the boys receiving
demerits which can possibly lead to expulsion. Additional support for this argument can be found
when Neil tells Todd that he had gotten the lead role in the play. Neil says: NEIL. They need a letter

Furthermore, whenever the boys are in the school building, their lives are gloomy. Whereas when
they venture off into nature, they tend to become more independent and more inspired about life.
The troubles of the school seem to fade away once they step off the grounds of the school.
According to shmoop.com, the young men do not have a sense of excitement until they are
venturing off from Welton Academy (Shmoop University). In the movie, Knox Overstreet went off
to a high school that was in town to see a girl. From the first time he meets her, he felt he loved her.
The high school was very different from the academy. The lockers in the hallway were bright
yellow, the cars in the parking lot were bright, all the students were wearing non–uniform clothing,
etc. (Shmoop University). Dead Poets Society overall is a serious movie, but the directors and
producers were able to use different colors and textures to show the seriousness of Welton Academy.
Another characteristic of Dead Poets Society is suspense. Mr Keating was an unknown character at
the beginning of the film. The only understanding of his personality is what he reveals throughout
the film. The unknown creates suspense. Will he come into the classroom dressed as a character of
literature or will he take the boys outside to a recreational field to explore life while playing soccer?
Another setting of suspense is when the young men sneak out and go meet in a cave to host a secret

Dead Poet Society : Movie Review : The Dead Poets Society
"The Dead Poets Society' is a movie that conveys many messages that are even more relevant today
than they were in 1989. The movie gives you an insider look into Welton academy for boys a
prestigious school known for its extreme standards. We follow a class of students who are inspired
by a one of a kind teacher Mr Keating, someone who changed their view on learning and the world.
The film touches on the subjects of the power of teachers, pressures from parents and teen suicide.
This film made me think about the impact teachers have on students, specifically the impacts of an
inspirational teacher. I'm sure we have all had a teacher that we see as inspiring and intriguing, this
was Mr Keating for the boys of Welton academy especially for Neil Perry. Mr Keating for me was
quite the opposite of his surrounding colleagues, he used innovative techniques to make learning
interesting and something quite out of the ordinary. The impact Mr Keating left on his students was
demonstrated through the "O Captain, My Captain" scene where a majority of the students stand on
their desks and say 'O Captain, My Captain' as a mark on respect. They do this when Mr Keating is
being fired due to his teaching methods to show the impact he had on them will not be lost. I
personally believe at Dio that we have it pretty good, we have teachers that are catering for our
needs and providing us with the best chance of succeeding while transferring the necessary
knowledge in an interesting way.

Neil a lively student with natural leadership qualities searches his inner self & finds that he has a

Welton, tradition, discipline, honour & excellence which are enforced by the echelons of power &
authority in the school, and in order to maintain discipline in the school conformity is physically
enforced. This is seen as the principle asks Charlie to assume the position after telling him that

Dead Poets Society Romanticism
In the movie Dead Poets Society, the schoolboys in Mr. Keating's English class learn to be their own
individuals, the non–conformist, the "oddballs"; in other words, the Romantics. The story of these
boys and their teacher creates an interesting view of Romanticism; a philosophy based on the
concept of a man basically good and his feelings as a standard of inherent value. By these characters
following the beliefs of Romanticism, many good things happened to them. When Mr. Keating
became their new English teacher, he taught them a new way to think. One of the very first things he
tells them is to "find their own voice... and consider what they think above all." He encourages them
to trust and express themselves. This lead the boys to become ... Show more content on

When Neil's father went to the play and saw his son acting when he specifically told him not too, he
became extremely angry and told Neil that he will no longer be attending Welton Academy and will
be joining the Military. In Neil's mind there was no way out so he took the only option he thought
would help him get out of this situation. As a result, his father blamed Mr. Keating for brainwashing
and therefore being the cause of Neil's death. But Mr. Keating did the complete opposite, he opened
the boy's eyes to a whole new world of freedom, but the boys parents, specifically Neil's parents,
don't necessarily agree with Mr. Keating's claims. Neil's death impacted all of them and in some
ways for the better, take for example Todd Anderson. The entire time in the movie, he was always
afraid to do what he wanted but Neil's death pushed him into actually taking a stand and quite
literally that's exactly what he did. He got up on his desk and said "O Captain, My Captain" to show
that he agrees with Mr. Keating's beliefs and will keep following through with them. Even though
losing a loved one is always hard, the boys learn to keep Neil's spirit with them, just like Henry
Thoreau once said, "On the death of a friend, we should consider that the fates through confidence

John Donne: An Influential English Poet
John Donne, one of the greatest English poets and preachers of the 1600's, greatly impacted the
writing field through his works. In the first half of 1572 (actual date is unknown) he was born in
London to John Donne, a merchant, and Elizabeth Heywood Donne, the daughter of the poet and
playwright John Heywood. His father died when Donne was about four years old. His younger
brother, Henry, also died in John Donne's early life. John Donne was raised in a Catholic family.
Both of his parents were devout Roman Catholics. During Donne's early adult life he converted to
Anglicanism.

The few works which were published during his lifetime were only given to specific circles of
people. His first published poem is Pseudo–Martyr which was dedicated to King James. His most
famous collection of love poems is the Anniversaries which are dedicated to his wife; the
anniversary is of her death. Songs and Sonnets, his best known set of poems; "The Canonization;"
and "The Extasie" are other famous love poems of Donne. For religious poetry, the series Holy
Sonnets includes three of Donne's most famous poems including "Batter my heart, three person'd
God," "Death be not proud," and "Good Friday, 1613. Riding Westward."
Poetry is not all that Donne wrote. He was also a preacher and a few of his sermons are added to his
collection of prose which is mainly religiously focused. Through his sermons and devotion books,
his artistry of his poems shines through. His series of devotions two of which are Devotions and
Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions were written when he became deathly ill, but he did recover
slowly. This near death experience made death tangible in his mind and was a great source of
inspiration for his writings. Edited by Logan Pearsall Smith, Donne's Sermons: Selected Passages

Dead Poets Society Many poets and directors believe in the concept of living life to the fullest. In
this quote, by Sir Henry David Thoreau, he shows that we should live life to its fullest and make
sure we make our mark while we still can, so people remember us. In the Movie," Dead Poets
Society," a group of students from the Welton Prep School are moved by the teachings of their
English teacher, Professor Keating. He teaches the boys to be their own boss, leaders and not
followers. This quote relates to the movie because this quote tells what Keating wants to teach his

When you look back at your life and realize that you have not taken full advantage of your
opportunities your whole life, you will realize that you may not have lived as good as you could
have. Many people feel that taking full advantage of your life will lead to not regretting a thing in
the future. The way Professor Keating taught was successful in the way that he made his students
realize that they need to live their own lives. . An example is when he teaches the boys "Carpe Diem
(Seize the day)." In the movie, Tim repeatedly says that when he is trying to win over a girl. Keating
is successful because he teaches Tim to go after what he wants and Tim was persistent enough to
keep at it and winds up getting her. Another example is when Neil decides to be an actor in a play.
Even though his father is against it, Neil does is anyway cause he knows he has what it takes and he
feels he has nothing to lose. I feel that if Keating did not teach his students to be themselves, Neil
would have never gone against his father and he would have never enjoyed his life. When Neil kills
himself at the end I think the blame is on his father because he would not let him do what he wants
to do in his heart, he wasn't being supportive of his sons wants. I feel that Keating had a very
positive influence on him. Because of Keatings teachings, his students learned to live their own

Dead Poets Society: The Escape for the Independent Minds
As a society we are groomed to be like everyone else, think like everyone else, and act like
everyone else. In 1959 American society, this idea was even more sought after. Even to the point of
taking away young men's freedoms in order to set them on the right career path for their lives. Until
one professor comes into the most highly thought of all boys preparatory school in America and
gives these young men a dose of what a free mind can truly do for one's spirit and soul.
On the first day all professors portray their very stern and unforgiving personalities towards their
classes and what must be done in order to be successful. However, the boys first interaction with
Mr. Keaton, the new english professor, is much less intimidating as he enters the room after the bell
has rung whistling a slight tune. He catches the boys off guard with his speech of how, as humans
we are just "food for worms" and we must "seize the day" every day in order to not miss our chance
before our body falls lifeless. Then further adds to his astonishing first impression on the boys by
following Neil Perry's reading of the Introduction to Poetry page by instructing the boys to rip this
page completely out of their text book. Then even more rip out the rest of the introduction and
justifying that "this book is not the bible you will not go to hell for this". The end of this day's lesson
sets the entire rest of the story into motion. The

Individualism In Dead Poets Society, And Dead Poet Society
Transcendentalists in the 1830s challenged society's normality. They broke stereotypes and began
not depending their actions according to others. Director Peter Weir and Author Ralph Waldo
Emerson wrote about transcendentalist's ideals of education to rebel against commonly accepted
behavior. Transecdiliasts assured and trusted themselves that the outcome is for the better. Similarly,
in the film, Dead Poets Society, Mr. John Keating teaches an English class navigating the class
through the uncertainties of life. The boys in Keating's class, discover themselves and begin to live
life focusing on their passions. "Self– Reliance," is an essay about expressing your individualism
and overcoming the social expectations in life. Together they both share the fundamental virtues that
to a live successful life with no regrets, one must trust their self–identity and carpe diem. For one to
live a life with no regrets they must fully embrace themselves self– in trusting oneself allows one to
them fully accept who they are and express it. In the film, Dead Poets society, people can see Mr.
Keating's unquie type of teaching style. Neil Perry, one of the brightest students at Welton
Academy, obtains a new type of perspective from this unusual English class and decides to try out
for the school performance. He gets the lead however; but his father does not approve, and forbids

Throughout the film Dead Poets Society, the character Mr. Keating displays many attributes of an
exemplary leader, according to the five practices of exemplary leadership. Firstly, throughout the
beginning of the school year, Mr. Keating builds commitment through small acts in his class room,
and builds credibility amongst his students. For example, Mr. Keating teaches lessons on poems
about ceasing the day, conformity, and perspective. The group of boys take these lessons, and apply
them to their lives, thus gaining respect for Keating. Neil auditions and acts in the school play to

Keating enables others to act, in fact, this might me the practice of exemplary behavior that Keating
exhibits the most. He has made his classroom a trusting environment that enables other people to
take risks and ensue change, as he does. He is constantly encouraging and strengthening his students
by pushing them out of their comfort zones. Keating treats his student in such a way that allows
them to feel comfortable talking to him about personal matters, such as Neil and his struggles
talking to his father. As previous noted, through the lesson he teaches in his class, Mr. Keating
inspires some of the boys to pursue change in their own lives. Keating taught lessons on
determination, passion, and standing by your beliefs, all lessons that the boys took into their own
lives. Neil, determined to act in the school play, Knox, took his passion and acted upon it, and
Charlie, the most difficult to sway into signing the contract, blaming Mr. Keating for Neil's death.
Also, Keating strengthen his student by pushing, them out of their comfort zones. He helped Tod get

amazing, and oddly honest poem out of him; that in the end pays off, as Tod is the first to

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, A British Poet
Alfred, Lord Tennyson, a British poet was and is one of the most popular and famous poets from
Victorian era Britain. In fact he survived for basically the entirety of the era, as he was born in 1809
and died in 1892, as stated in John Maynard's Alfred , Lord Tennyson (page 4). Born into a large
family in somewhat less than adequate conditions, he found solace mostly in writing, even from a
young age. According to online–literature.com he lived with what the world now knows as
depression and was, apparently, very easily distracted, known as a notoriously absent–minded
person. These traits might have been made a bit more severe thanks to his living conditions, being
the fourth of twelve kids to his parents, who each had their own issues, most definitely including his
father. According to poetsgraves.co.uk Alfred's father, George Tennyson, suffered from a number of
illnesses, including epilepsy, alcoholism, and general mental instability. While this certainly made
life difficult for his twelve children, George tried his best to provide a good education to them,
seeing the potential in Alfred from a young age as he had shown signs of his talent from when he
was very young. George was a pastor who, likely because of his profession, had an interest in
classical and modern literature, and decided to pass this information and passion on down to his
children as best as he could. His life eventually started catching up with him, however, when in the
1820s he began to suffer many

Symbolism In Dead Poets Society
Dead Poets Society is a classic film from 1989 featuring Robin Williams, which takes place during
the 50's at a traditionalist boarding school for the rich with extremely strict customs and a
straightforward message: Tradition, Honor, Discipline and Excellence are all keys to academic
success. Within the film, elements such as character development, conflict, setting and symbolism
together with a variety of techniques are used to support the prevalent theme: Tradition can restrict
individuality leading to progressive thoughts. Mr. Nolan, the headmaster of Welton, is a strict
individual who is shown throughout the movie to have an extremely conservative viewpoint aiming
to engrave the 4 pillars of education into the minds of his pupils. As Nolan's character is developed,
his ultimate goal of restricting the individuality of the students and preserving the social customs of
the academy become increasingly apparent through his dialogue. At first Mr. Nolan appears to
demonstrate the traditionalist views of the academy through his inauguration speech in order to
please the parents that have spent their money on sending their children to an elite boarding school.
However as the film continues it becomes apparent that Nolan takes the customs and high standards
of the school extremely seriously, as evidenced by his increasingly bitter punishments for those that
do not conform to his ideals. At first, when Charlie on behalf of the Dead Poets Society decides to

Dead Poets Society Conformity
What is conformity? To put it simply, it means to adhere to societal standards or "norms".
Adolescents are particularly susceptible to such; when they begin to separate from their family and
form their own identity is when they also seek acceptance from their peers or live up to expectations
from their parental figures. "Conforming to social norms help them redefine themselves while
earning them acceptance and approval. Fitting in simply feels good" (Ulene 6). It means that by
blending in and mimicking the people around them makes teenagers feel good during the process of
finding themselves. Conformity to the social norms of an era is a common problem among teens.

The music video depicts a young child building a "wall" between himself and his peers. He is
different from the children who all look the same with their masks. He writes poetry, which he is
punished for, and simply does not fit in with his peers who actively submit themselves to their
teachers–"All in all, you were all just bricks in the wall" (Pink Floyd, 8). They are fed into a
machine that spits them out looking exactly the same as each other, then fed into a meat grinder,
symbolizing their own self destruction. Of course, while actual students are not fed into a meat
grinder, the symbolism is clear. Students go through their school career being told what to do and
how to act. This will "program" the kids into acting in similar fashions, thereby contributing to the
child's isolation. The symbolism directly translates into teenagers today: being trained to do the
same schoolwork the same way that will get recycled later. Conformity in a school environment,
which is where it is most common, is arguably the most destructive as that is where the majority of

parents and teachers. Throughout the movie Todd develops a strong moral for the justice of others.
The problem is Todd believes he has no voice, and that nobody would listen to him. Mr. Keating
sees this weakness in Todd, and pushes him out of his comfort zone by bringing an inner voice to
Todd through poetry. When Mr. Keating is fired for being blamed for Neil's death, Todd brings
appropriate justice to Mr. Keating by standing up for him to let him know he wasn't the one to
blame and others followed Todd's lead.
Knox Overstreet is a comical character throughout the movie and is a romantic. Knox has low self
confidence in himself, for not being a very popular person. As the movie progresses Knox develops
a strong personal moral to not live with regrets. Knox meets a girl Chris in which he likes very
much, but he is too afraid to ask her out because the fear of her saying "no" lingers with him. Mr.
Keating teaches his students to seize the day, Knox asks Chris and wins over Chris just by being

Transcendentalism is a literary movement in the 1830s that suggest that every individual is capable

Dead Poets Society Analysis
Spellbound (2002) by Jeffrey Blitz, and Dead Poets Society (1989) by Peter Weir, are two texts that
both present different ideas about the issue of parental pressure, and in some cases, have different
ideas on the same degree of pressure. Spellbound follows the lives of eight teenagers as they all
compete to win the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Dead Poets Society follows the lives of
multiple teenage boys as they begin to look at poetry and life in a new perspective because of the
English teacher they get, Mr (John) Keating. Parental pressure and the connection between parent
and child are the two major points being compared to identify each film's idea on pressure.
Spellbound, through personal interviews expresses the idea that a strong connection between parents
and children, and a small amount of pressure are necessary in the child's success. On the other hand,
Dead Poets Society gives the idea that a lack of connection between parents and children, and a high
degree of intense pressure is harmful and this is shown through the climax of the film.
In Spellbound, most of the parents apply pressure to their children by encouraging them to succeed
at what they voluntarily want to do. This idea is shown through interviews taken with the parents
and children of the families. The connection that parents have to their children in this documentary
are relatively close, which could alleviate some of the pressure put on them because they know they
could rely on their parents

while the camera follows them spinning to show disorientation and confusing emotions.
Furthermore, Mr Keating's saying "The difficulty of maintaining your own beliefs is in the face of

that, thinking on his own terms. Once Mr Keating had been fired from Welton, Todd decides that it

Themes In Dead Poets Society
Why are the doors past the first level of the mind locked for so many? Locked by the omnipresent
shackles of tradition and social conventions that only those with an educated imagination can break
through. The protagonists in, Dead Poet's Society, were oblivious to their journey in pursuit of
individualism due to the constant bombardment of tradition and expectation from the conformists at
Welton Academy. Mr.Keating's efforts to create "freethinkers" (Keating) out of his students is very
similar to Frye's goals to educate the imaginations of society so that they can "follow [their] bliss"
(Frye). Life and its conventions are like a large flowing river – for one to experience true self
actualization a stream branching off must be created because "even a dead fish can go with the
flow" (Hightower). The film Dead Poets Society pertains to various themes explored in the course
including the hero's journey, The Seven Basic Plots, Four Plot Patterns, Frye and Campbell allowing
for a thorough cumulative analysis. The monomyth that Campbell so eloquently illustrates through
physical, emotional, and psychological transformations was present throughout the entire film of
Dead Poet's Society. The classical heroic journey begins in a setting where the hero exists in their
day–to–day life, known as the ordinary world. Welton Academy introduces the ordinary world by
expressing the four pillars of the school "tradition, honour, discipline, excellence" (Hagar) and
making it clear that

The Dead Poets Society

  • 1. The Dead Poets Society The movie Dead Poets Society is about a teacher who comes to an academy school to teach a english class. His name is John Keating and he is one of the main characters in the movie. Mr Keating was an alumni of the school he is now teaching at. There were many different lessons that the movie taught. The first lesson is to Suck the marrows of life. The second lesson is to do your own things and be independent. The third lesson is to look at life from different angles. The purpose of this movie was to show people better ways and different perspectives on life. One lesson that was expressed in the movie was to get the most out of your day as possible and don't waste time on things that won't benefit you in the future. An example from the movie is when Neil went into acting because he knew that's what he wanted to do instead of listening to his father and going to harvard to study and become a doctor. Another lesson that was expressed in the movie was to follow your own path and don't be a follower. In the movie the boys separated themselves from everyone else in the school and snuck off into a cave and met together and created the dead poets society. The third lesson is to look at life from different perspectives and angles. An example from the movie is when Mr. Keating makes the boys stand on top of his ... • 2. Dead Poet Society The Review Dead Poet Society (Weir, 1989) is a movie about a shy teenager named Todd Anderson, who has to live up to his older overachiever brother's reputation. Todd goes on to attend the same school where his brother graduated as a valedictorian–The Welton Academy for boys. The semester begins with an orientation assembly speech from the unyielding Headmaster Nolan, who highlights the academy's four pillars: Tradition, Discipline, Excellence and Honor. Todd meets Neil, his roommate. Later on, both teenagers find out that they are both living a similar situation involving the constant pressure from their parents to succeed. Following, the teenagers get to meet their conventional teachers. However, they also met a teacher whose teaching method ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Bible teaches us in Matthew 6:33, "To seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" English Standard Version. This is true for me because as a coach I need to believe genuinely in my client's vision, just as God believed in me when He gave his only son to die for our sins. God's genuine act of selflessness is a reminder that we as well, should carry on that message to those we come across in this lifetime. The movie was truly inspirational in all aspects of the word. I would not modify anything in this movie. I will integrate what I learned from this movie to help my clients through the transformational process, but more importantly, to help them believe in themselves in order for them to take charge of their lives. The most valuable lesson I took from this film was that we should believe in ourselves just as God believe in us. Perhaps the biggest lesson I took away from this movie is that believing in ourselves regardless of what other people think is necessary for a long–term ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Dead Poets Society Analysis Kerry O'Neill English 15 Dead Poet's Society Movie Review Peter Weir's, "Dead Poets Society" is about an unorthodox, inspirational and frankly an unusual English teacher and his students. Set in 1959 at Welton Academy , a fictional elite Vermont boarding school. Follows an English teacher, and how he challenges his students to question traditional views by techniques such as standing on their desks to "look at things in a different way." Although unavoidable that this intelligent and brilliant teacher will be fired from teaching at this school, it was extremely touching when his students stood on their desks to stand up for their admired teacher. Weir's film incorporates a lot about poetry with a lot of great lines from former poets included within the film itself. At the end of the school semester, an extraordinary teacher's goal in the poetry course, would be to leave the students loving poetry, nevertheless, at the end of the course, the only thing the students really end up loving, is the teacher himself. This marvelous movie stars Robin Williams as the whimsical John Keating who is new to Welton Academy to teach an English class. For the entirety of the movie, Williams undertakes a fine job of portraying a sharp–witted, well– educated, clever young man. Along with his well–liked personality and amusing impressions of John Wayne performing Shakespeare. One aspect that seemed to lack, is the overall depth to William's character. Keating seemed to be more of a plot ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Themes In Dead Poets Society The film Dead Poets Society directed by Peter Weir and the novel Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon, explore the issues that the protagonists face during their years of adolescent development. The brutal mechanism parental pressures has for great fulfillment in life is superbly portrayed with the utilization of setting, cinematography and irony throughout the film and novel. Thus, as the protagonists tolerate relentless pressures from their parents, it triggers the thoughts of Neil (DPS) and Madeline (EE) to become rebellious, as they realise for the first time that they have aspirations for themselves. Hence the literary techniques of character development and symbolism were exploited in both texts to present the theme of rebellion. Therefore, the aforementioned themes commendably represent the chaos adolescents experience throughout their years of development and the ways it impacts their future. Both Yoon and Weir demonstrate the consequences of parental pressures on a teenager's development by emphasising the feelings of restriction experienced by the protagonists. However, one explores in an old fashioned society and the other in a modern society. Exploring the purpose of using the setting of a private school, depicts the director's intention to showcase tradition and discipline of the film's general setting. In contrast to Yoon's utilisation of a sterilised, modern home that emphasises cleanliness and order, because "If [Madeline's] life were a book and you read ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Dead Poets Society Analysis The film "Dead Poets Society" takes place at Welton Academy in 1959. The film starts with a traditional ceremony to start off a new semester for seniors at Welton. At this ceremony it's established that there are four pillars of ideology that the students must follow: excellence, honor, tradition, and discipline. The headmaster of Welton, Mr. Nolan explains that these ideologies have made Welton, one of highest esteemed prep schools in the Untied Stated. At the end of the ceremony, the new English teacher, John Keating, is introduced. Mr. Keating was an honor graduate at Welton and has returned from teaching at Chester School in London. The film then introduces the characters that later make up the dead poet society. Neil Perry, Knox Overstreet, Charlie Dalton, Richard Cameron, Meeks and Pitts which have been going to Welton for years. Then, a new student shows up, Todd Anderson. On the first day of class Mr. Keating explains the most important statement in the film "cape diem" this translates to "seize the day". Keating's unorthodox teaching methods leads to the bottom line of this film that the students should act as individuals, think for themselves, and "live life to the fullest". Mr. John Keating's unorthodox teaching methods influences the actions that move the film forward. These teachings need to be explained to give the boys' actions a higher meaning. On Keating first day he enters whistling the tune 1812 Overture. Then, proceeds to take the boys out into a hall that displays many achievements in Welton's past. Keating tells the boys that they may refer to him as "Oh Captain, my Captain". This was composed by Walt Whitman to honor Abraham Lincoln. Just as Lincoln, Keating we be the leader that inspires the boy to make a change. This when quote "cape diem" is first introduced and shows the boy to think for themselves. The next day, Keating starts by having one of the boys read the into the textbook. This shows that poetry has a mathematical plot to find the quality of the work. Keating calls Mr. Pritchard's idea of as poetry excrement. Then, instructs the boys to rip out the intro of the book as poetry is not about laying pipe. He demonstrates that the boys must think for themselves. This is when the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Dead Poets Society Essay Dead Poets Society Dead Poets Society Hysterical Text One person's interpretation of a story is always different than another's. Some of us may see things that are not being shown to us. Dead Poets Society, in author Tania Modleski's eyes has taken on a manifestation larger than the author herself. This story is not what the author will have you believe, whereas the true story was hidden in the misconception of Modleski's beliefs. The sexual content, homoerotic tensions, and antiauthoritarian behavior, seemed to come from the author's wishful thinking as opposed to the reality of the film. In the film a homosexual theme could not be seen. When Mr. Keating came to the school to teach, he did not insist on being called oh ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is one character that committed suicide according to Modleski because his father would not let him play a fairy in a play. What this character was trying to show was that he had finally broken free of his father's decisions on how, and what, he should do. He auditioned for a play and got the part all by himself, without his fathers approval. This was something that he wanted to do, and was good at it. When his father forbid him to pursue acting, even second to him being a doctor, this was all he could take. Him putting his fairy crown on the open window ledge, just before committing suicide, symbolized the freeing of the actor inside, like an offering to a higher being. The boys in Welton Boarding School share what all boys their age share while at school. There are no signs of homoerotic tensions present. There are signs of groups forming and friendships being made. When they decided to form the Dead Poets Society it was a normal male bonding experience. An all male boarding school does not mean that they are all homosexuals who are crying out for recognition. The movie did not illustrate any homosexual tension between the boys at any time in the movie. When Mr. Keating told the boys to rip out he introduction of the book he was trying to illustrate that writing poetry was not like reading a recipe. Poetry was feeling what you are writing, and it was from the heart not the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Dead Poets Society Analysis In the film, The Dead Poets Society, a strict, all boys prep school is overturned once the new english teacher arrives. Mr. Keating, the original founder of the dead poets society, encourages the boys to ditch conformity and pursue their true interests in life, much to the enragement of the parents and school. The behaviors the boys begin to display can be explained by psychologists Erich Fromm and Doris Lessing. Both psychologists examine humankind's tendency to conform and obey to a higher power, which can be seen in the film, The Dead Poets Society. As the higher powers such as Headmaster Nolan and Neil's father see their authority being threatened by Mr. Keating, the destruction of hierarchy in Welton Academy begins. Although the boys are becoming happier with their new found independence, the parents and school refuse to allow their happiness to ruin the dictatorship and they ultimately pay the consequence. The Dead Poets Society demonstrates an irrational authority and the mandate of an unwavering authoritarian conscience, and how the excessive control used over young teens is more damaging than any form of their free thinking. When the film begins, there is a sense of uniformity all around. From the identical school uniforms the boys don, to their timed march with the flags into the auditorium. The academy which the boys attend is obviously strict and only allows the old set of traditions to be taught to them. After a long day of going through the same, mundane ... • 8. Dead Poets Society Analysis The film, Dead Poets society, shows us the lives of the boys at Welton Academy after the hiring of Mr. Keating as the new english teacher.Throughout his employment we see Mr. Keating largely impacts the lives of the boy in a positive manner. Mr. Keating gives the boys a taste of freedom, free from the oppression of parents and schools and lets them develop as individuals. His classes are filled with many wise and valuable life lessons that largely influenced the boy. The boys at Welton also discover a hidden passion for poetry through Mr. Keating's unique and engaging lessons. Keating's emphasises on freedom and originality raises many eyebrows at Welton, a school that celebrates tradition above everything else, however, the boys have much to gain from his unique classes. Mr. Keating uses his unconventional ideas to negate the 4 pillars of Welton Academy. He represents the progressive ideas that were rejected in 1950's England. Mr. Keating classes of page ripping, ball kicking, and standing on desks, contrasts greatly with the teaching methods of other teachers, such as Mr. McAllister, who opposes the individuality and freedom of young adolescent minds and embraces conformity. Mr. Keating's classes provides the boys with a form of escapism, allowing the boys to discover new things and eventually "learn to think for (themselves)." For instance, during one of Mr. Keating's lessons the boys are taken out onto the field to read their poems, the camera tracks Mr. Keating as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Dead Poets Society Conformity Literary Essay – Dead Poets Society Bill Beattie once said, "The aim of education should be to teach us how to think rather than what to think – rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men." All too often, however, individual thoughts are crushed by the powerful weight of conformity. In the film Dead Poets Society, conformity exercises it's influence and the results prove disastrous for some. For others, the effect of conformity compels them towards individual strength and the discovery of one's true self. Modern education is one of the largest "offenders" when it comes to conformity, and that point is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Perhaps they were clapping because everyone else was clapping, or perhaps they were just having a good time. However, it cannot be disputed that the group conformed without thinking. All too often, the words of the textbook are considered undisputed fact. All chemistry textbooks will list the elements with the same symbols and all Latin textbooks will list approximately the same translations. The poetry textbook, written by a Dr. Pritchett, attempts to lump words that are meant to touch the heart into the same factual categories of math and the sciences. Can Dr. Pritchett's method of analyzing poetry by graphing its importance and perfection be used to measure what one feels? More importantly, is Dr. Pritchett's method the only method that one must use when measuring the greatness of poetry and can poetry be looked at using only the mind and not the heart? Mr. Keating did not feel that poetry was meant to be analyzed using measurable techniques but rather through the feelings of one's heart. He summed up his feelings on Dr. Pritchett's method of measuring the greatness of poetry in one word, "Excrement." He took his class on a journey of self–discovery, a journey where they learned that there is not always a right answer or a wrong one. In order to find one's true self, one must learn to resist conformity and walk one's own way, as was illustrated in the lesson out in the courtyard. He taught them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Conformity In Dead Poets Society "Carpe diem, seize the day, boys, seize the day." Mr. Keating told this quote to the boys almost every day and he wanted them to be their own individuals. While watching the movie, Dead Poets Society, we realize how important it is to have individuality and to not conform to everyone else's normal ways to live. The Dead Poets Society was filmed by Peter Weir in the year 1989, starring boys attending a preparatory school, who are being forced to ideas of conformity, not being able to have their own ideals, and dealing with their overbearing parents. Conformity is a huge deal back in 1959, you couldn't talk back to your teachers, your parents, or anyone for that matter. Conformity can have a negative undertone in school because students are supposed to be individual and should not have to be the same as everyone else. Students should be able to act how they want to be who they are. Children in school should be given their own opportunity to do what they please. Non– conformity can have a positive undertone in school because not being conformed to everyone else's norm, you are a special individual. Being able to do as you want is good to becoming your own person and not being like everyone else in school. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. Dead Poets Society Analysis Never let life pass you by. Take all opportunities that life provides and live life to the fullest. The movie "Dead Poets Society" is about young men comprehending all that life has to offer. Welton Academy is an all–boys school that focuses on preserving order and instructing students on what the academy believes is important in life. Welton has narrowed their priorities into what they've entitled the four pillars, tradition, discipline, excellence, and honor. Students are expected to keep order and not violate any of the pillars. With this, all of the boys that graduate from Welton adopt a reputation of well–behaved and mature young men. The students are not exposed to a normal high school environment and are taught strictly from a textbook. This is until a new English teacher, John Keating, is employed at the school. Mr. Keating is the kink in the four pillars to Welton Academy. Instead of teaching from the text book, he tells the boys one phrase that makes them think differently, "Seize the day". He revealed to the boys that there is more in life than what is being revealed to them. "Dead Poets Society" contains the theme of seizing the day or not letting life pass by. This relates to the movie because Mr. Keating exposes his students to events that they have never witnessed before and reveals all the opportunities life has to offer. The Transcendentalist believed in making change with literature to shape society. In the movie, Dead Poets Society illustrates the Transcendental truths of self–reliance and nonconformity. The philosophy of Transcendentalism can have both positive and negative effects on people, which path you choose to follow is up to you. Transcendentalism is a philosophical, literary movement during the nineteenth century, which focused one perception and the individual consciences. Transcendentalism gained support of writers such as Emerson, Thoreau, the Transcendentalists believed in self–conformity, trust one's self, simplicity, and nNonconformity. • 13. Dead Poets Society Analysis The Dead Poets Society was made in 1989 and was directed by Peter Weir. It has taken place in Vermont during 1959 at a very strict and traditional boarding school called Welton, or "Hell–ton" Academy. This school is a prestigious place for white young men. The film was a major hit receiving critical acclaim and popularity in the box office. This movie is so wonderful because John Keating, played by Robin Williams, portrays a very nontraditional teacher that makes his students share in his love of poetry. Mr. Keating is a man who is true to himself and teaches his students this. Mr. Keating tried to take the boys away from the traditional classroom setting and sings and jokes with them. On the other hand, one of the teachers in the school Mr. McAllister is the stereotypical traditional teacher. He wants the boys to sit in rows, listen to whatever a teacher says, and not to listen to their inner selves. Mr. McAllister tells Mr. Keating during the beginning of the movie he is "taking a risk by telling the boys they can be artists". During the second class Mr. Keating asks them to do something they have never done before, rip out a huge portion in their textbooks The boys discuss how "weird, yet different" he is. He disagrees with the math terms being used to describe the art of poetry. The boys are shocked and all of them stutter then feel empowered by the freedom they are given. In the beginning of the movie the school's newest English teacher arrives, Mr. Keating, a former student at the school. The students discover his teaching methods are rather untraditional as he would have his students tear pages out of the textbook to march around the courtyard. One of the main lessons of Mr. Keating's lecture was the aspect of carpe diem or seize the day. In the beginning of the movie, several boys find Mr. Keating's yearbook and discover that he was in The Dead Poets Society. This club was reintroduced by several boys: Neil Perry, Todd Anderson, Charlie Dalton, Knox Overstreet, Steven Meeks, Richard Cameron, and Gerard Pitts. Once the Dead Poets Society is established each boy starts on their own ambitious adventure regarding love or their dreams. When each boy is tested with one of their adventures they think of Mr. Keating's words, carpe diem, and they peruse their challenge. • 15. Analysis Of Dead Poets Society A) Overview The 1989 movie, Dead Poets Society, features a group of boys attending a private boarding school, the Welton Academy. The central conflict of the movie stems from the clash between educational approaches. The movie uses the educational conflict as an engine to propel the plot and to explore and develop the characters. The Welton Academy's education style is most definitely traditional. The school's educational approach is revealed by Headmaster Nolan three minutes into the movie as he states the "Four Pillars of Welton"–– "Tradition. Honor. Discipline. Excellence." Mr. Keating embodies a teaching pedagogy of equality between teacher and student in the classroom, teaching students to think independently and critically, and challenge conventional thought. The boys seize the day by creating a club called The Dead Poets Society. Mr. Keating's progressive pedagogy thus inspires a radical club. This is the first step in the boys' move from conservatism to progressivism and ultimately to a radical crisis. The club's radicalness peaks when a member, Charlie Dalton demands that girls be allowed to attend Welton Academy. He causes a full campus meeting where he mocks Headmaster Nolan by holding a telephone out and instructing him that God has been calling and that he should answer. As one could expect, the conservative headmaster does not respond well. Headmaster Nolan interviews each student individually until one student, Richard Cameron, turns in the rest of the club to save himself from expulsion. This demonstrates how a new approach can threaten more established norms, followed by a retaliatory backlash. • 16. Dead Poet Society : The Critique Of The Dead Poets Society "Now is the time to seize the day" is the main premise behind Dead Poets Society. This movie is all about helping young men to find who they really are. This is the way that John Keating, the teacher, wants his boys to know, he teaches the boys that anything they want to do they could. He brings these kids hope. "Captain", as the boy call him, is different from the other teachers because he is less strict and more real, he is less focused on grades and more on setting the kids up for the real world. His teaching style would be considered as Essentialist. He is setting the scene for these kids to stand up for themselves, for example in the Dead Poets Society, he encourages Neil to follow his dream of acting. With Neil he is unknowingly giving him the courage to stand up to his father and giving him the courage to go his own way. Another example is he set them up to start The Dead Poets Society again and with that he set them up to find their own paths in life. The school is a boarding school for boys to be trained up in the ways of higher education and to train the boys for a "real job". They have four major traits Tradition, Honor, Discipline, and Excellence. The attitudes of the staff and administration are those of snobs! • 17. John Donne : A Medieval Man But A Metaphysical Poet Robyn Leatherwood ENGL 3313 Dr. Speller Dec 3, 2014 John Donne: A Medieval Man but A Metaphysical Poet When examining writings from the Baroque period, John Donne is widely acknowledged as the leader of metaphysical poetry. While there are other well–known writers who made this style of poetry popular, Donne is by far the most discussed and most analyzed. The term metaphysical developed from John Dryden describing Donne's work as "[affecting] the metaphysics, not only in his satires, but in his amorous verses, where nature should only reign"(Dryden). After this analysis of Donne's work, others such as Samuel Johnson began to use metaphysical when describing not only Donne's poetry, but also the other poetry from this period, which was written similarly. According to The Oxford English Dictionary, metaphysical is defined as "senses relating to philosophical speculation or intellectual abstraction" (Simpson). In other words, this poetry is beyond the natural; it takes something physical and pushes the meaning from natural to something philosophical. T.S. Eliot argues that the term metaphysical was only used for Johnson to describe John Donne's difficult imagery, and therefore we should reconsider using the term so loosely to describe a larger group of poets (Eliot 249). Whether one agree with Eliot or not, upon delving solely into Donne's poetry, one will see that his work is in fact metaphysical. There are parents who involve themselves in their child's life so much the child has no say in anything. Being limited or neglected from pursuing one's goal can lead to depression. Something similar to this takes place in the film Dead Poets Society. In this film a character named Neil is prohibited from pursuing his goals of becoming an actor by his father. This results in at least one argument found in the film. In fact, three arguments can be identified in Dead Poets Society. One argument found in Dead Poets Society is that Mr. Keating should not have told the boys about the Dead Poets Society. This is supported when the boys (Neil, Todd, Knox, Charlie, Cameron, and Pitts) spoke with Mr. Keating about the Dead Poet Society. Pleased with the boy's interest with the Dead Poets Society he says: "The Dead Poets were dedicated to sucking the marrow out of life. Here, Mr. Keating without knowing encouraged the boys to re–establish the Dead Poets Society, leading to the boys sneaking out of their rooms after curfew. • 22. Dead Poet Society : Movie Review : The Dead Poets Society "The Dead Poets Society' is a movie that conveys many messages that are even more relevant today than they were in 1989. The movie gives you an insider look into Welton academy for boys a prestigious school known for its extreme standards. We follow a class of students who are inspired by a one of a kind teacher Mr Keating, someone who changed their view on learning and the world. The film touches on the subjects of the power of teachers, pressures from parents and teen suicide. This film made me think about the impact teachers have on students, specifically the impacts of an inspirational teacher. I'm sure we have all had a teacher that we see as inspiring and intriguing, this was Mr Keating for the boys of Welton academy especially for Neil Perry. Mr Keating for me was quite the opposite of his surrounding colleagues, he used innovative techniques to make learning interesting and something quite out of the ordinary. The impact Mr Keating left on his students was demonstrated through the "O Captain, My Captain" scene where a majority of the students stand on their desks and say 'O Captain, My Captain' as a mark on respect. They do this when Mr Keating is being fired due to his teaching methods to show the impact he had on them will not be lost. I personally believe at Dio that we have it pretty good, we have teachers that are catering for our needs and providing us with the best chance of succeeding while transferring the necessary knowledge in an interesting way. ... As Nolan's character is developed, his ultimate goal of restricting the individuality of the students and preserving the social customs of the academy become increasingly apparent through his dialogue. At first Mr. Nolan appears to demonstrate the traditionalist views of the academy through his inauguration speech in order to please the parents that have spent their money on sending their children to an elite boarding school. He writes poetry, which he is punished for, and simply does not fit in with his peers who actively submit themselves to their teachers–"All in all, you were all just bricks in the wall" (Pink Floyd, 8). They are fed into a machine that spits them out looking exactly the same as each other, then fed into a meat grinder, symbolizing their own self destruction. Of course, while actual students are not fed into a meat grinder, the symbolism is clear. Students go through their school career being told what to do and how to act. This will "program" the kids into acting in similar fashions, thereby contributing to the child's isolation. The symbolism directly translates into teenagers today: being trained to do the same schoolwork the same way that will get recycled later. Conformity in a school environment, which is where it is most common, is arguably the most destructive as that is where the majority of teenagers spend their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Dead Poets Society Analysis Spellbound (2002) by Jeffrey Blitz, and Dead Poets Society (1989) by Peter Weir, are two texts that both present different ideas about the issue of parental pressure, and in some cases, have different ideas on the same degree of pressure. Spellbound follows the lives of eight teenagers as they all compete to win the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Dead Poets Society follows the lives of multiple teenage boys as they begin to look at poetry and life in a new perspective because of the English teacher they get, Mr (John) Keating. Parental pressure and the connection between parent and child are the two major points being compared to identify each film's idea on pressure. Spellbound, through personal interviews expresses the idea that a strong connection between parents and children, and a small amount of pressure are necessary in the child's success. On the other hand, Dead Poets Society gives the idea that a lack of connection between parents and children, and a high degree of intense pressure is harmful and this is shown through the climax of the film. In Spellbound, most of the parents apply pressure to their children by encouraging them to succeed at what they voluntarily want to do. This idea is shown through interviews taken with the parents and children of the families. The connection that parents have to their children in this documentary are relatively close, which could alleviate some of the pressure put on them because they know they could rely on their parents ... Throughout the scene of when the boys where meant to have made their own poem, Todd had not done his and can see clearly that the way he is looking down at the table shows he is disappointed in himself and feeling down. Mr Keating, seeing Todd in his gloom, pulls him out in front of the class to shout a barbaric yawp. Besides doing that, Mr Keating them covers Todd's eyes with his hands and starts spinning him around asking him to chant a poem about a picture of a man spontaneously, while the camera follows them spinning to show disorientation and confusing emotions. Furthermore, Mr Keating's saying "The difficulty of maintaining your own beliefs is in the face of others" goes to show how difficult it would have been to get up in front of the class and talk like that, thinking on his own terms. Once Mr Keating had been fired from Welton, Todd decides that it would be best to honour what Mr Keating has taught him about speaking up in front of an audience and just learning to comprehend if they aren't accepted, and to give it a go anyway. Todd stands on his desk and turns to his former teacher and recites his saying "O' Captain, my captain!" plus the other boys follow in his example and stand on their own desks. Mr Keating replies to the teenagers by simply saying "Thankyou boys", and the camera zooms in on Todd's face, displaying how glad he is with his life. • 39. Themes In Dead Poets Society Why are the doors past the first level of the mind locked for so many? Locked by the omnipresent shackles of tradition and social conventions that only those with an educated imagination can break through. The protagonists in, Dead Poet's Society, were oblivious to their journey in pursuit of individualism due to the constant bombardment of tradition and expectation from the conformists at Welton Academy. Mr.Keating's efforts to create "freethinkers" (Keating) out of his students is very similar to Frye's goals to educate the imaginations of society so that they can "follow [their] bliss" (Frye). Life and its conventions are like a large flowing river – for one to experience true self actualization a stream branching off must be created because "even a dead fish can go with the flow" (Hightower). The film Dead Poets Society pertains to various themes explored in the course including the hero's journey, The Seven Basic Plots, Four Plot Patterns, Frye and Campbell allowing for a thorough cumulative analysis. The monomyth that Campbell so eloquently illustrates through physical, emotional, and psychological transformations was present throughout the entire film of Dead Poet's Society. The classical heroic journey begins in a setting where the hero exists in their day–to–day life, known as the ordinary world. Welton Academy introduces the ordinary world by expressing the four pillars of the school "tradition, honour, discipline, excellence" (Hagar) and making it clear that ...
