Discussion Qualities
I am prepared for the discussion
beforehand and have all necessary materials
with me. (For example, text, Double Entry
Diary, sticky notes, etc.)
I arrange myself physically in a group
that promotes face to face interaction, and eye contact.
I am an active listener (don’t interrupt)
and allow others to think in silence.

I demonstrate positive communication both verbally
(tone of voice), and non-verbally (body posture, and gestures).
I share the discussion, rather than monopolize, and
encourage others to participate.
Constructing meaning through discussion
I return to the text for support of the topic. There is never
a right or wrong opinion, only one without support.
I build on what classmates contribute, instead of repeating,
to construct group meaning and deeper understanding.
I share personal connections, and experiences
 to make sense of the text and develop understanding.
I respect all viewpoints. I disagree with others respectfully.
(For example, I thought of that differently, to me it meant …)
Together as a group we arrived at a deeper understanding
