2. Reaching student’s mind for having a passion in Filipino highly defined movies as a goal of appreciating exceptional directors, Cinema 1 Originals and ABS-CBN Archives bring movies that will surely appreciate by PUPians. These Filipino Independent films give ideas on diverse voices to illustrate various way of living including the aspect of communication. Some of these films are: “Kabisera”, “Woman of the Ruins”, and “Shift”.
KABISERA.The “Kabisera”, directed by Alfonso “Borgy” Torre III, is a film undertake the story of conscience over poverty which is shown through protagonist (Andres) dealing with meth. His status in life, being a family man pushes him to go in selling this meth despite of his past experience into the jail. Andre’s dilemma between practicality in life and his morality is an instance of what is Cognitive Dissonance Theory. Cognitive Dissonance Theory explains the altercation between what is morally right and what is practically best that made Andres act outside his belief persuading himself that he is right to choose what he thinks he beliefs of even its really not. As Andres take the decision of selling meth, this continues at certain level of frequency because of its favourable results, this act of fortification is a Reinforcement Theory. Andres was convinced to go on this illegal action through the reinforcement introduced to him by his friend, Jose, and the information about its cost he overheard when SPO 3 Pablo talks about the missing meth of Muslims. Another scene that shows communication theory in the film “Kabisera” is the contradicting decision of Andres and Ramon (fiancé of Andres’ daughter, Anna) about where to live. This point up Elaboration Likelihood Model Theory through peripheral route which Andres uses to quickly reject the decision of Ramon with non- contemplation because of his cue of authority (‘because I said so’) since he is the man of the house and father of Ana.
3. WOMAN OF THE RUINS.“Woman of the Ruins” by Keith Sicat, is a film of post- apocalyptic idea of believing in an omen and symbolizing a lost woman, a thought of miracle as well as a sign of misfortune which they used to call ‘Maria’ for they believe she is Pasyon’s wife (Maria), . This story of the film that visions people attributing all their hardship and calamities in this unforgiving island as Maria’s fault as of the mystery of her oneself exemplify Attribution Theory because it represent behaviours perceived based on variety of causes. Before accepting the role of being Maria after she found washes on the shore there are theories takes place, first is Cognitive Dissonance Theory that explain her initial reaction when the people in this certain island give her the identity of being ‘Maria’ yet she believe she’s not. It is truly that she has no memories that can possibly one of the two conflicting idea but still she has belief even without foundation of memoirs that can be counted as an idea contradicting on what people want to insist to her. Second is Elaboration Likelihood Model Theory through peripheral route with the cue of social proof (‘everyone says it’) as she was forced to conform to be Maria and to be Pasyon’s wife since everybody in the island believe she was the long gone and died Maria, in the end she has nothing to do but to play the role of it.
SHIFT. “Shift” by Siege Ledesma, is a gender oriented film played in the environment of call center agency. This is a love story of Estella and Trevor and as other story goes their relationship develops through communication which means there are communication theories takes place. At first they’re get to know each other by chitchat and sharing their stories, this represents Uncertainty Reduction Theory because of their similarity and non-verbal warmth to each other. And as their communication became more personal ones like the scene where they’re talking about their past love stories, relationship develops, they’ve became best friends, and they even got a love team ‘Estevor’ made by their co-workers, this developing relationship
4. implied Social Penetration Theory. And because of their closeness unexpectedly Estella falls in love with Trevor, knowing that Trevor is homosexual, this is Expectancy Violation Theory. The violation on expectations goes on both of them, for Estella it’s on those scenes she starting falling in love with Trevor and for Trevor it’s on the scene where Estella tells her true feeling to Trevor but he remained silent because he didn’t expect Estella to fall for him.

GANITO KAMI NOON, PAANO KAYO NGAYON?
”Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?”is one of the films successfully restored by ABS-CBN Archives into high definition, directed by Eddie Romero. As seen in the film this was took in teenage years of the artist Christopher de Leon which is the protagonist of the story named ‘Nicholas Ocampo ‘. The story of the film was about this naïve boy which usually called by his nickname ‘Kulas’, his adventure as his world open up for a broad vision of what’s the reality. This film tries to present the Kulas’ venture depiction to the portrayal of who are the Filipinos in the conquest of various colonizers as he goes through this era. It aims to touch the nationalist inner part of the viewers to make them reflect the mark of being a true Filipino. This romantic musical drama film with a touch of comedy tries to present a message of awakening our nationalist consciousness for timeless interrogation. This film was a 1976 movie but until now in this 20th century it still influences the audience that nationality is part of one person’s identity. This message was shown in the film through exposing the existing culture and belief of Filipinos during Spanish period and American period in the Philippines. As the Spain inhabits the Philippines, the concept of the true Filipino has changed. They instil in the Philippines the set of standard for being a Filipino based on elite culture. By this corruption of mind, they believe that Filipinos are those who are wealthy, educated, sophisticated and erudite. They have a class in their ways of living which mostly of these persons are the Spanish and American colonizers- they are the only considered true Filipinos.
As what the movie portrayed it is evidently shown that this is an exemplar of Elaboration Likelihood Theory by Petty and Cacioppo which explains why some Filipinos automatically go through to endow rapidly the acceptance of the concept or belief that the colonizers implanted to
6. them without profound reflection on what they’ll going to remove in their identity, this is commonly known as peripheral route in elaborating message. But on the other hand, this also explains why there are Filipinos who contemplate to the concept of standards sets by the colonizers; these people are those struggling to fight for revolution which can be explain by central route. Filipinos view on who are the true Filipinos and if they not, who are they, was suddenly change by one of the cues in peripheral route in this said theory. Filipinos believes that their identity as a true one by blood (jus soli) nor by land or what we call now by law (jus sanguines) are not an evidence of their persona because for themselves the only law to be followed in aspect of who are the true Filipino is the one set by Spaniards and Americans. This idealism is caused by the cue allowed the people to believe on lame deception and this is because of both social proof ‘Everyone believes on it’ and authority ‘Because I said so’ considering that in this era, Spaniards and Americans are those who have great power because they rule the system. This perception of being a true Filipino was almost extended its influence to the city. And because of this there are scenes in the movie that shows the people’s attitude towards wealth It also shown in the movie the take of tragedy before Kulas realize ideas he accept by those said cues and escape to this to arouse his maturity and political awareness as well as his heart for his identity, his nationalistic consciousness.
