3. ROLE OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
IN CONTINUOUS AND
COMPREHENSIVE EVLUATION (CCE)
INTRODUCTION
Swami Vivekananda has rightly said… “Education is the
manifestation of perfection already present in man.”
The purpose of education is not just making a student
literate but also rationale thinking, knowledge ability
and self sufficiency which are present in child in
dormancy state. Education is an engine for growth and
progress of any society. It not only imparts knowledge,
skills and inculcates values, but is also responsible for
building human capital which breeds, drives and sets
technological innovation and economic growth.
The word ‘technology’ has evolved from Greek word
‘tech’ whose meaning is ‘skill’ or ‘art’. That means
Technologyis an art or skill to use various techniques,
tools or machines.
According to Webster’s dictionary, technology is that
“branch of knowledge that deals with industrial arts
and sciences.”Sometimes the term ‘educational
technology, relates to overall education i.e. covers all
aspects of education and learning.’
4. Traditional teaching learning
process-
In the traditional context Mostly, The teacher delivers
the content via the “CHALK & TALK” method to the
entire class emphasizing factual knowledge. Thus, the
learning mode tends to be passive and the learners
play little part in their teaching learning process. More
emphasis is given on theory without any practical and
real life time situation. Learning from memorization
but not understanding.
Innovation in teaching learning
process through tools and
techniques-
Basically, the standard of education depends upon the
standard of teaching learning process which is changed
according to changing needs and demands of the
society and the nation in the sense of globalization.
The present era is the era of technology as in the most
of the fields of life technologyis being applied in
innovative way with demanding tools and techniques.
5. CCE is an innovative technique in education covering all
aspects of a child’s development including academic,
abilities, attitudes, personalities, etc.
Concept of CCE-
There are three terms involved in CCE:-
1.Continuous refers to regularity in assessment.
2.Comprehensive refers to both scholastic and co-
scholastic areas of pupil’s growth.
3.Evaluation expresses both qualitative and
quantitative description of child’s performance.
What is Continuous and
Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE)?
The term continuous and comprehensive evaluation
(CCE) is used for school based evaluation of pupils in
which their assessmentis done on a continuous basis
thought out the year and which is also comprehensive
in nature, in the sense that it is not confined to
assessmentin scholastic subjects but also covers co-
scholastic areas such as performance in games/sports,
physical education, creative education, art, music,
dance, drama, other cultural activities and personal &
social qualities.
6. The background of CCE
According to NPE 1980- nationalpolicy for educationof 1986
(revised in 1992) mentions about continuousand
comprehensive evaluationof pupilwhich covers both
scholastic and non- scholastic aspects of their development.
According to the National Curriculumframework-2005:
school based CCE system be establishedto…
Reduce stress on children.
Make evaluationcomprehensive and regular.
Provide space for the teacher for creative teaching.
Provide a tool of diagnosis& remediation.
Produce learners with greater skills.
Types of Evaluation
Types of
Evaluation
formative
evaluation
summative
evaluation
7. Formative Evaluation
Is done during the teaching learning process or
formation of learning.
Example- Periodical tests, Assignments, Projects
etc.
Provides continuous feedback so that remedial
measures could be taken.
Summative Evaluation
Is done at the end of a terminal stage to establish
total achievement of a child.
Example- Annual examination conducted at the
end of the year.
Helps in certification or grading.
Difference betweenFormative and
Summative Evaluation
Indicator Formative Summative
Role of
students
Active involvement Passive involvement
Examples Observations,
interviews, evidence
from work samples, etc.
Common assessments
like tests and exam.
8. Design Designed to adjust
teaching and learning
while they are still
occurring.
Designed to provide
information about the
amount of learning
that has occurred at a
particular time.
Means
of testing
Quiz, interviews,
conversations, visual and
oral testing, projects,
practical, and
assignments, etc.
Assessmentin the
form of pen- paper
test mostly.
Evaluation Done to improve or
change a program while
it is in progress.
Focuses on the results
or outcomes of a
program.
Grading Scored but not graded. Graded
Goal The goal of formative
assessmentis to
improve.
The goal of summative
assessmentis to prove.
Purpose To enhance learning. To make judgments
about students’
performance.
Relation to
instruction
Occurs during
instruction.
Occurs after
instruction.
9. Frequency
Role
Occurs on a continuous
basis (daily).
To improve learning
allows teachers to make
decisions and monitor
their instructions based
on students’
performance.
Occurs at a particular
point of time to
determine what
students know.
To predict & judge
students’ performance
give grades and
determine if the
content being taught
was retained.
Educational technology of CCE
Heinich defined educational technology as “the
application of our scientific knowledge about human
learning to the practical tasks of teaching and
learning.”
D. Unwin stated “Educationaltechnology is concerned
with the application of modern skill and techniques to
requirements of education and training. This includes
the facilitation of learning by manipulation of media
and methods and the control of environment so far as
their reflects on learning.”
10. Form these definition we can say that Educational
Technology helps the teacher to decide ‘what should
they teach’(content) and ‘how should they teach’
(method), next is ‘how to know that the children have
learned/understood what they have taught them i.e.
the evaluation process.’
Educational technology implies the techniques and
methodologies of Instruction. It is linked with
effectiveness and efficiency of the teaching learning
process and involves following steps-
i. Analyzing he needs of learners.
ii. Designing the curriculum.
iii. Developing the lessons and media.
iv. Implementation of instruction.
v. Finally evaluating the progress of students as also
their terminal abilities.
Diagram Of Instructional System
Cycle
11. CCE helps the teachersto define their
roles by the following four board
functions-
PLANNING- Establishmentof the objectives
preparation of units, schedule of training etc.
EVALUATION
FROMATIVE AND
SUMMATIVE
IMPLEMENTATION
Instruction: Motivation
DEVELOPMENT
Lessons and Media
DESIGN
Objectives lesson Media Selection
ANALYSIS
Needs: Learner Profile
12. ORGANING- Arrangement of the learning resources,
utilization of audio visual etc.
LEADING- Motivation, encouragement and provision
of stimuli to the students in teaching learning
process.
CONTROLLING- Assessment, feedback and
regulation so as to realize the objective optionally.
These four inter- related functions of a teacher
constitute the teacher as a system in
Educational technology.
Therefore the CCE helps a classroom teacher
in the following ways-
To indentify learning difficulties in mastering
certain competencies and the intensity of such
learning difficulties.
To improve students’ learning through diagnosis
of their performance.
To plan appropriate remedial measures to
enable the students who have learning
difficulties in mastering the competency.
13. To improve or alter instructional strategies to
enhance the quality of teaching.
To strengthen evaluation procedure itself.
