Things to keep in mind in our professional relationships with inmates

   • Remember goals set with therapy and effective ways to solve those goals. Individual

therapy address specific targeted areas and all inmates are to receive the same care. Goals

are set for all inmates to address said issues.

   • A relationship with an inmate is hazardous. Relationships with inmates are

emotionally draining. Inmates normally manipulate the staff member that is involved

with an inmate. Inmates are manipulative. They are capable of bring division among the

employees. They will turn and tell on in the first opportunity that presents itself to better

       their situation.

   • Profiles of inmates. The profile of inmates are random, but fall into a certain criteria.

Inmates are normally predators although their appearance is well spoken. They have

committed crimes and some of them an assortment of drugs, child or spouse abuse, rape,

       etc.

   • Tips to avoid being emotionally involved.

 Stay with other staff members and show respect for them.

 Do not speak on a first name bases.

 Do not perform favors for the inmate.

 When warnings sign develop speak with another staff member.

   • If you are emotionally or romantically involved with a jail inmate. Please refer to

your supervisor as to help deescalate the situation if you feel like the situation is

becoming out of hand. If you are not comfortable talking with your supervisor, please

talk to any supervising staff member for assistance.
