2. Dattatreya is the Grand Teacher or "Guru principle" in
the universe. The teachers in various planes are the
manifestation of the one teaching principle who is
referred to in the ancient Indian wisdom as Dattatreya.
Anasuya in Sanskrit means: "not Asuya". Asuya means
malice. Dattatreya is said to be born to Anasuya, the
Mother and Athri, the Father. Athri, the Father, is said
to be the pure consciousness and Anasuya, the Mother,
is said to be the state of no malice (jealousy). The state
of Anasuya is depicted as an equilateral triangle and
the state of Athri is depicted as a centre within the
circumference. As pure consciousness he can be like
the Divine Mother and as Pure Existence he can be the
God Absolute.

5. According to these beliefs,
Dattatreya is an avatar of Vishnu born to Rishi
Atri and Anasuya. Though an avatar of Vishnu he
also possesses the attributes of Brahma and
Shiva who also were incarnated in the Atri family
as Soma and Durvasa respectively along with
Dattatreya but who left their parents charging
Datta - treya with their attributes. Hence
Dattatreya is also known as Trimurti.
Rather than a deity, Dattatreya is regarded
more a person, a celibate avadhuta, a wandering
Guru and a king among yogis (Yogiraj), who
travels on earth showering his grace on worthy
devotees.
6. He is said to sleep at Mahur (Matapur), (about 300 Km
away from Nagpur), bathes at Varanasi in UP, asks for
alms at Kolhapur in Maharashtra and takes his meals at
noon in Panchaleshwar on the banks of Godavari (near
Aurangabad famous for the Ajanta Ellora cave
paintings). He uses his yogic powers to travel.
He is believed to have taken four avatars in the recent
centuries, these are: Shripad Shrivallabha, Shri
Narasimha Saraswati, Swami Samarth of Akkalkot and
Shri Manik Prabhu of Humanabad in the old Nizam
State, now in Maharashtra.
Shri Dattatreya’s birthday is traditionally celebrated on
Purnima (Full moon day) of the ninth lunar month
Margashirsha which falls in December.

9. Dattatreya from the Avadhoot Gita:
With fuel and without fuel, I am always burning; With
smoke and without smoke, I am always glowing; with
flame and without flame, I am always shining; I am
immortality in knowledge, I am equality in essence, I am
like the sky
I am fire that burns religion and irreligion, I am fire that
burns merit and sin, I am fire that burns bondage and
privilege, I am immortality in knowledge, I am equality in
essence, I am like the sky.
10. Dattatreya from the Avadhoot Gita:
I burn the faggots of action and inaction; I burn
the faggots of pleasure and pain; I burn the
faggots of him who adores his body, I burn the
faggots of him who ignores his body; I am
immortality in knowledge, I am equality in
essence, I am like the sky.
