2. The history of the plot:
Before in the 1920-30s: Hitchcock made the
first sound movie called ‘Blackmail’ . In 1931,
there was a film based on a serial killer, as
previously the plot in many films commonly
used one villain and one hero in the movie.
But in the present day, thriller films have shared
ideas and themes (known as hybrids) and have
similar elements within them. In the recent
thrillers, the directors have added more gore,
horror, violence and brutal behaviour. Thrillers
used to be more psychological but have now
started to have horror aspects within them.
3. The History of the Characters:
Films in the 1930-40s, commonly used a
villain and a hero, and then have a
stereotypical happy ending e.g. superman.
But as the film industry has developed, they
have introduced gangs, Assassins,
terrorists, mentally disturbed people and
stalkers. This range of different characters
has allowed films to expand and make the
film more thrilling and scary.
4. The History of the Genres
and Themes:
There has been a change in genre, and Alfred Hitchcock had
a big part in this genre. At first, films were based on true
stories, for example Jack the Ripper. Sub genres started to
then play a part in the genre, and psychological thriller were
very popular in the early time period. The films then started
to become crime thrillers, like the film ‘Birds’, and sub
genres are now often used much more to make the film
more exciting and thrilling. Other examples of thriller sub
genres, are like action thriller (Jaws), and political thriller
(the firm). Themes have stayed similar compared to years
ago, these themes consist of terrorism, disfunctional
relationships, politics, conspiracy, pursuit, romantic triangles
and abduction. However, sub genres are used in the film
industry much more frequently, which adds more themes to
the film. For example, added themes to action-thrillers are
violence, and special effects.
