Postmodernism and postmodern theory link
in well with the short film I will be making as my
film will feature many postmodern elements.
Postmodernism is a change in the arts that stems off
of the dying moments of modernism.
Postmodernism in art came around due to the
invention of the camera as the camera made it so
that people could take pictures that rivalled the
quality of beautiful paintings. So artists needed to
adapt and change their ways in order to stay fresh
and current. This lead to art becoming very twisted
and strange in order to survive.
Postmodern theorist Jean Baudrillard wrote a
book called 'Simulacra and Simulation' that
established a theory called 'Hyper Reality' the sense
of the hyper real is when something becomes almost
otherworldly. Baudrillard claims that simulation, is
the current stage of the simulacrum: All is composed
of references with no referents, a hyper reality.
Progressing historically from the Renaissance, in
which the dominant simulacrum was in the form of
the counterfeit—mostly people or objects appearing
to stand for a real referent (for instance, royalty,
nobility, holiness, etc.) that does not exist, in other
words, in the spirit of pretence, in dissimulating
others that a person or a thing does not really "have
it"—to the industrial revolution, in which the
dominant simulacrum is the product, the series,
which can be propagated on an endless production
line; and finally to current times, in which the
dominant simulacrum is the model, which by its nature already stands for endless
reproducibility, and is itself already reproduced.. An example of this could be the matrix
where Neo escapes the pod that is used to harvest his body heat. He wakes up in a new world
that is different from the one we
currently live in. My short film will
be very hyper real as it will look at
humans with a postmodern eye. It
will establish the changes that
television has had on society and
show the ways nature and
technology combat each other. My
film will be hyper real as it is our
own world but it will be very vivid
and extreme. Obviously wearing a
television on your head is not a
common thing to do so for this fact
alone my film will be postmodern.
