The following concept describes the relativity
of time for me: “One hour in the company of
a beautiful woman feels like a second. Putting
your hand on a hot stove for a second feels
like an hour”.
Time doesn’t change ... we all get 86 400
seconds a day. But, our perception of time
does change. When we’re doing something
that we are not that into, time can feel as if it
is expanding. The task at hand becomes a
drudgery.
But, when we’re doing something that really
intrigues us and keeps our attention, before
we know it hours have gone and it was an
absolute pleasure.
How often do we get into what Mihaly
Csikszentmihalyi referred to as “flow”?
When it happens, it is a beautiful thing.
Before you continue reading further, take a
moment to think about when you did
something and you weren’t aware of the time
that went by because you were so into it.
In my case, I get into flow state when I’m
playing a game of chess, when I’m writing
an article or a book or when (I know this one
may sound weird to you) I’m washing
dishes.
I’m totally vested in the moment and not the
outcome. I know what the ideal outcome is
for me and that lies on the outskirts of my
consciousness. I’m in flow when I’m in the
moment. When I’m present.
When I’m trying to create beautiful art.
Because, when you think about it, we’re all
artists and we’re all trying to create
masterpieces. If you’re not in awe that you
can read this article and the rest in this
publication in print, you should be.
Because if it wasn’t for the amazing art of
Gutenberg and the gift of printing he gave
all of us, intellectually at least, we’d probably
all still be in the dark ages. For me a beautiful
move on the chess board that get’s my
opponent to pause and ponder for a little while
longer than he normally would gives me a
small thrill. Finding just the right word to help
my reader understand something and maybe
shift his or her consciousness to the positive
... phew, that’s got to be art. To uncover the
squeaky cleanness of a white porcelean plate
(told you it’s weird) gives me pleasure. So,
what’s the trick to getting into flow in any
task we do. I have a notion that to get into
flow we should be totally focused on the
process and not on the outcome. Don’t get
me wrong, the goal should be clear. But, once
it is set, the magic happens when we focus
on the process of getting there.
The more we are pre-sent in anything we do,
the more we enjoy the journey and the happier
we are.
When we are in flow we have no time to worry
about past or future. We are in a state of
harmony. When we are in flow we feel in
control.
Everyday frustrations are removed from our
consciousness when we are in flow. I for
instance, can’t be focused on writing an
article and worry about an unreasonable client
at the same time. So, focus on the journey,
enjoy the creation process and watch the
beautiful art you will produce that will benefit
everyone who you come into contact with.
Get into flow.

breaking book, Flow: The Psychology of
Optimal Experience

Jou en my aanbiddingJesus maak die volgende uitspraak
aan die Samaritaanse vrou in
Johannes 4:22-24, “Julle aanbid wat
julle nie weet nie; ons aanbid wat ons
weet, want die saligheid is uit die
Jode. Maar daar kom ‘n uur, en dit
is nou, wanneer die ware aanbidders
die Vader in gees en waarheid sal
aanbid; want die Vader soek ook
mense wat Hom só aanbid. God is
Gees; en die wat Hom aanbid, moet
in gees en waarheid aanbid.”
Daar is ‘n paar
belangrike punte
wat ek uit hierdie
gedeelte wil
aanraak. Jesus
maak die volgende
stellingaandievrou
“Julle aanbid wat
julle nie weet nie;
ons aanbid wat ons
weet” . Kan
iemand ‘n God
aanbid wie hulle nie
eens ken nie? Wel
ek dink dit is baie
waarskynlik. Ek
dink baie het ‘n
vorm van godsdiens
met geen intieme
kennis van God nie.
So ja, ek dink baie
kan die naam van
die Here op hulle
lippe neem sonder
om Hom waarlik te
ken. Hierdie ken
preek van ‘n
ontmoeting, ‘n
verandering en ‘n
intieme verhouding.
Die bogenoemde
teks is nou net so
relevant as toe.
Onthou God se
Woord is Ewig en
kragtig en lewendig.
So ken jy die God
wie jy aanbid of het
jy net van Hom
gehoor? Ken jy
Jesus en het jy Hom
ontmoet deur
wedergeboorte of
ken jy Hom net by
naam? Jesus gaan
verder en ek glo die
stelling geld vir ons
ook. “Daar kom ‘n
uur en dit is nou” .
God roep elke kind
van Hom, elkeen wat
Hom Vader noem.
Die tyd tot Sy
wederkoms word
korter. Nou is die tyd,
nou is jou tyd om te
kies. Nou is die tyd
om onsself te
ondersoek. Hy sê
nou is die tyd
wanneer die ware
aanbidders die Vader
in gees en waarheid
sal aanbid. Die
teendeel moet dan
ook waar wees.
Daar is valse aanbid-
ders wat die Here
slegs in hulle vlees
dien. Hulle gee voor
om Hom te dien.
Hulle dien Hom dus
uit valse voorwend-
sels en met mens-
gemaakte maskers.
Ware aanbidders
dien die Here met
hullehelehart,sielen
verstand. Hulle
staan in ‘n liefdes
verhoudingmetdie
Here. Hulle het die
Heilige Gees in
hulleharteontvang
en die Gees van
God getuig saam
met hulle gees dat
hulle ware kinders
van God is Rom.
8:16. Hulle aanbid
Hom met oorga-
we. Hy is vir hulle
alles. Hulle dien
Hom ook in waar-
heid. Die Griekse
woord “waar-
heid” beteken;
sonder enige mas-
ker met integriteit
en deursigtigheid.
Nie volmaak nie
maar opreg. Die
Here soek hulle
wat Hom met
hulle hele hart in
volle waarheid sal
dien. Paulus gaan
voort in Rom. 12:1
“ En vermaak julle
broeders by die
ontferming van
God dat julle, julle
liggame gee as ‘n
heilige,lewendeen
Godewelgevallig
offer, dit is julle
redelike godsdiens.
Ons aanbidding is
‘n offer aan die
Here. Ons lewe is
‘n offer aan die
Here. Hy soek hulle
wat Hom in gees en
waarheid sal aan-
bid. So hoe lyk jou
offer.? Is dit aan-
neemlik voor God?
Ek bid werk-lik dat
jy ‘n ontmoeting
Flow...

Staff training builds
skills, loyalty and
profits in small
businesses

In many small businesses, training is regarded as a
luxury; something that cannot fit into the average
day, according to Ethel Nyembe, head of small
enterprise at Standard Bank.
Although the focus of any small enterprise should
be meeting customer expectations, it is training
that can improve customer experience and boost
profits, said Nyembe.
“When it comes to training, many people think of
a boardroom, expensive technology and high-
priced presenters,” said Nyembe.
“This does not have to be the case; training that is
effective is targeted, but that does not mean costly.
The beauty of training is that it does not
necessarily mean major costs and time off work
for people who are needed to drive sales.”
For us at the Business Chamber it is extremely
important that we as Business owners start to
believe again in the potential of our employees.
Who can still remember his/her first employee?
We all started out small somewhere and that first
employee where one of the people we shared our
dreams with and often spoke to about the
successes of the new found company. Two three
years later, all that ‘romance’ is gone and we are
slowly but surely losing touch with those who
helped us make our dreams come true.
Why not then invest in them, and help them also
achieve their dreams.

you in your business, please contact us.
