sounds mystical. Is that Hindu?” “No,” I
say, “It’s Islamic.” It takes about a second
or two before it registers. You see it in their
eyes first. They either go dark and harden,
like burnt stone in the Karoo. Or a shadow
of fear flits across them, like a moth across
a flame. Followed by the tight, polite smile
… a rancid rind of judgement. And then the
closed body language. Typically in the form
of folded arms. To lighten the interminable
silence. They’ll say something like, “So
have you been fitted out with your suicide
bomber jacket yet?” Ha, ha. Of course this
discourse only highlights my own frailty
when it comes to prejudice. I also have
mental maps for various tribes. How do I
know when I’m going to be become
predjudiced? My sentences start with the
word ‘the’. The Jews. The Zimbabweans.
The Muslims. The Blacks. The government.
The right wing. The left wing. I now pause
when I say ‘the’ because it leads to words
like ‘them’, ‘their’, ‘they’ and ‘those’. These
words give distance and separateness from
the other. They dehumanise. These words
are often followed by their first cousins ...
‘always’and ‘all’.As in, “All foreigners ...”

it’s an alien concept
to me. That all
changed in 2016.

Rand Vaal. I spent
close on three
months there. When
I tell folks that I was
at a spiritual retreat
this is how the
conversation plays
out. “That’s so cool.
Was it a buddhist
retreat?” “No,” I
say, “It was a Sufi
retreat.” “That
and “Muslims always ...”. But, if you listen,
like I’m trying to listen you’ll hear a whisper
in your true heart … “ussssss”. I’m starting
to get that there’s no “them” and “their”.
There’s only “us”. By prejudicing others,
I’m only prejudicing my brothers and sisters.
And ultimately myself. If I harm another, I’m
only harming myself. I’m realising that it’s
time to start building bridges and not barriers.

wrong intentions to satisfy your pleasures.
And when you ask you must believe
whatever you ask shall be given unto you.
