Boating Research Paper
Summer brings great weather which means an increase in recreational boating activity, there can be
many dangers while boating, both from forces outside your boat and from things on your boat. Here
are some suggestions for staying safe on the water during the boating season. The number one tip
for staying safe out on the water is to always wear a life jacket while boating. You should make sure
that there are enough personal flotation devices (PFDs) readily accessible on your boat for everyone
out on the water with you. PFDs must be Coast Guard approved, in good and serviceable condition,
and the appropriate size for the intended user. Check with your state boating safety officials and the
Coast Guard for full regulations. Leaving alcohol on land can also ... Show more content on

The fire extinguisher should be mounted somewhere readily accessible and away from the galley or
the engine where a fire is more likely to start. In addition to fire hazards, you can encounter
problems from you gasoline system as well. If your boat uses gasoline for electrical generation,
mechanical power, or propulsion, then you need a ventilation system. Depending on your boat,
you'll either need a natural ventilation system (a supply opening or an exhaust opening) or a
powered ventilation system. Check with the Coast Guard for information on your boat. In order to
avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, carry a carbon monoxide detector. The gas, which is odorless and
colorless, can kill in minutes. Sources of carbon monoxide include improperly vented exhaust or
combustion, ranging from fires to barbecue grills. Before you head out on the water, always check
the weather forecast. Calm seas can turn into rough waters. Listen carefully to all weather and storm
advisories. Your life raft should be checked annually to make sure it's in good working condition. A
friend or family member should always know your trip plans before you leave. They should know
where you are heading and when you should be

Demonstrate understanding of design principles:
Order of paragraph: 1st Context, 2nd design principals, 3rd subjective, 4th objective
Intro:
In this report of demonstrating key design principals, I am going to discuss the different design
elements and principals for the 3 websites I have chosen. The first website, which is on Shotover Jet
was created in 2001, compared to my second website which is again Shotover jet, but this was
created in 2014. For my third website I have chosen to use my own website I had designed in 2014,
for Rotorua Adventure Tourism LTD. I will be discussing these three websites by outlining the
websites specific contents and the elements that the website has used and by outlining the subjective
and objective aspects of each webpage.
Context
Discuss technology of time, and how it could have impacted the design. Eg access to computers and
internet speed
Discuss how what was happening in the world could have affected the design, eg recession, people
being aware of global warming, and NZ's clean green image
In the 2001 Shotover Jet website: How did the people advertise, were there lots of design to choose
from, who used websites (making a background of what are you going to say), eg in the 2001
census, over 37% households had access to internet , compared to in 2013 over 75% of households
had access to internet.
Due to the Lord of the Rings movies and the Rugby World Cups, NZ started to gain a wider
audience in which

Case Study Of Merbatty Boats
Section 1
Introduction:
Merbatty Boats was formed 33 years ago by the current Chairman and Chief Executive, Alberto
Blanc. The company manufactures luxury boats and is listed on the European Stock Exchange since
November 2015. The head office is currently based in Europe with a boat building facility as well as
2 additional facilities in the USA and Middle East. Merbatty Boats currently manufactures 15
different types of luxury boats and also offer a full interior design service. The company achieved a
total operating profit of 15.1% in 2015 with a new record of manufacturing 280 boats. They
currently have a market share of 8% in the industry. The industry is mainly based in Europe and the
USA with a growing customer base of successful and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Topcrest and Merbatty also have a longstanding relationship and is easier to maintain than to build
new relationships with new suppliers. The favourable relationship also provide good grounds that
Topcrest will honour their promise of no late deliveries in the future. Merbatty can also appoint a
backup hull supplier should Topcrest not honour their promise of any further late deliveries and thus
minimise the risk of a similar incident happening in the future.
3.2 Building and manufacturing of racing boat – priority 2
This project is ranked second as the possibility of investing in the speedboat with no guarantee of
success can lead to massive losses. The possibility of the raceboat being a failure can result in bad
publicity for Merbatty.
The new marketing director, Jesper, is keen to develop a speedboat and compete in the global
speedboat race as a marketing strategy. Jesper wants to race for a period of 2 years with the
possibility of manufacturing its own range of speedboats should the racing be successful. Jesper is
of opinion that this can also lead to an increase in sales of the P–3000 performance

Argumentative Essay On Kayak Fishing
Kayaks have been classic vessels for fishing, as opposed to using a big boat. Many people are
flocking to kayak fishing because of its many benefits. Kayaks for fishing range from two hundred
dollars to thirteen hundred dollars, much less than the cost of a boat (fishhound). Operating a boat
takes a toll on the angler and his gear and it comes with a lot to think about, and it is hard to handle.
Using a kayak instead of a boat allows access to non motorised water bodies, as well as height and
length limited water bodies. Most people use kayaks because they provide peace and quiet, and they
promote exercise benefits (Mac). Buying a kayak instead of a boat, and using artificial bait instead
of natural bait is the best option because of the benefits ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anglers also prefer to use artificial bait this because they need to use much more equipment when
using natural bait. (The Dorling 250). The equipment needed when using natural bait includes
bobbers, hooks, line, swivels and weights. Searching for and storing for all of these items is time
consuming and very expensive. Another downside to natural bait fishing occurs when fishing with
live fish. When using this method, an angler would not always know in which direction the fish on
the end of the line is going to swim. Using a live fish as bait can be quite difficult because it is hard
to get a live fish to stay on a hook.when using artificial bait the only tackle you need is the lure. A
very popular method of artificial bait is crankbaits. Crankbaits are easy to use, inexpensive and they
are durable. Anglers prefer to use artificial bait over natural bait because natural bait lasts only a few
hours, but artificial baits can last for years. Another plus to using artificial bait is that the angler will
be able to cast into the water quickly. The natural bait fisherman will have to organise his tackle,
prepare his rod, and tie everything together. Artificial baits are useful for kids because most
crankbaits have an action. An action is when an angler has to move the rod a certain way for the lure
to work. Lures that are good for kids can just be casted out and reeled straight back in. Some lures
are made with one single barbless hook. The advantage to using a barbless hook is that once is on
the hook the hook is easy to remove. In the event that an angler has put hook through his skin a
barbless hook is eazy to take

Boating Persuasive Speech
It's the beginning of another boating season, friends! As you start re–commissioning your boat, and
take that cover off, did you realize that its time to get a new cover? We've all been there, as well
made as the tops are, they don't last forever. So its time too start looking. What are the best covers
for the money? Ask two boaters the same question, and for the most part you get two different
answers. But when you are asking about the best choice in boat covers, hands down most will
answer with Sunbrella. The first thing that puts Sunbrella on the top of the list is it provides UV
protection up over 95%. Although not water proof, they are very water repellent, so as long as you

They are disposable and can be remade as needed for playtime. Anyone can make their own paper
boat using an 8 by 11 inch sheet of paper. The following article demonstrate how to make your own
standard paper boat: First, take an 8 by 11 inch sheet of paper and fold it in half from top to bottom.
Then fold the paper in half a second time from left to right, or right to left, and reopen it so that it
lies flat again. A vertical crease should be marked in the middle as a result of the fold. The folded
edge of your paper should be facing away from you (upwards). Fold one corner of the top folded
edge diagonally towards the middle crease of your paper until the edge is aligned with the middle
crease. Repeat this step with the other corner. Your paper should now look a like large triangle with
excess rectangular strips of paper at the bottom on the front and back side. The second step is to
eliminate the excess bottom strips on the front and back side of your paper by folding them upwards
on their corresponding side. Fold the front strip upwards while leaving the back strip alone. Then
turn over your paper and fold the second remaining strip upwards as well. Do not fold both strips to
one side because your paper will need an opening at the bottom. After folding the strips upwards,
you should have a pointed hat with a flat rectangular brim. Hide the corners of the hat's flat brim by
folding them backwards – or inwards

The Pros And Cons Of Boat Paint
Best bottom of boat paint
As a boat owner you know the struggle of keeping your boat in its best shape. The fact that your
boat will sit in water, where it will be subject to the elements, and a population of various sea
creatures, only complicates matters. The best way to maintain your boat, and to protect it from the
corrosive effects of Mother Nature, is by using the right boat paints, also referred to as anti–fouling,
boat bottom or ablative paint.
These paints serve two crucial functions. First, cosmetically, these paints will simply keep your boat
looking good and brand new. Secondly, and most importantly, they physically protect your boat
from damage caused by things such as salt wate,r and they prevent the growth of aquatic organisms

TotalBoat Alumipaint (best for aluminum boats & pontoon boats)
Now that we've talked about bottom paint for fiberglass boats, it's time we talk about protecting
aluminum boats. Not all biocides are good to use with aluminum. This is due to the copper (cuprous
oxide) often found in traditional boat paints. Basically, aluminum and copper don't mix well. For a
long time, tin based paints were used for aluminum boats, but now that these paints are banned,
what is the best way to protect an aluminum boat? We think TotalBoat Alumipaint AF Aluminum
and Pontoon Boat Bottom Paint is great choice.
Alumipaint uses a special blend of Zinc and Econea to create a biocide that is potent and fully safe
for aluminum boats. It is also environmentally friendly, and works in both fresh and salt water. This
copper free antifouling paint can be easily applied and offers protection with only 1 or 2 coats. You
will need to use a primer to use this paint successfully, as is the case with all aluminum paints.
Pros
Environmentally safe

Copper free for full compatibly with all aluminum boats
Cons

Persuasive Essay : Bad Decisions And Consequences
Everybody makes stupid mistakes that could have been prevented, but nobody in this world is close
to perfect and will never be perfect. Good can actually come from making mistakes, by doing
something wrong you are corrected and shown how to fix it by someone who has already made your
mistake. Growing up I have made plenty of terrible decisions that lead to consequences in the end.
Also, I have seen many of my close friends and family make mistakes that got them into trouble, but
afterwards they learned a valuable lesson. I am going to tell you a story about one of my close
friends who made a mistake and took full responsibility of his action and by doing so learned a
valuable lesson that he can now pass on to people in his life.
During the summer I fly down to Arkansas to visit my dad and work at a place called Camp
Yorktown bay, which is a christian camp with different ages each week. We provide several different
activities there and one of them is boats. At boats you can do any sport possible behind a boat that
the kids want to learn and we the staff will teach them how. Our oldest age group, which is the last
week we do an overnight trip on the boats. My Friend Chandler was on his way to fill up the boat
after the long day of work. It was getting dark out and pretty soon he had to drive with knowledge of
where the shallow spots were on the lake because you could no longer see the markers pointing out
the shallow water. The mistake that he made was mixing up where he thought he was so he had no
idea he was coming upon a very shallow part, next thing we he knows the boat makes a terrifying
noise and it stops moving. I remember him telling me that he got really scared, and he had realized
that the boat had ran aground. It wasn't that big of a shallow spot so by backing up he got free. The
boat had seemed fine so he kept driving, when he got back to camp he realized that he had to tell our
boss what had happened.
The next morning right away Chandler went to our boss Jeff and started explaining what had
happened that night. He took full responsibility and told my boss that he would try and pay for the
damages somehow. But by being honest with him and not lying Jeff said that he did not have to pay
any money for

As the skipper of a vessel you have many responsibilities to reckon with, such as the safety of the
crew, the vessel's seaworthiness, weather, currents, navigation, attentiveness to other vessels and the
appropriate operation of the boat. But, boating can be fun, safe and rewarding if you take time to
learn how to safely operate your boat, and follow the rules. Learning the requisite laws and
regulations is a good starting point. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) distributes a publication
call Navigation Rules: International – Inland. This publication, which can be ordered or downloaded

intact line), and docking lines. These listed precautions only scratch the surface of all the aspects of
a good, sound boat. By the way, is your boat registered or documented as required by your state or
municipality? Speaking of equipment, safety equipment is an important part of boating and
shouldn't be overlooked. Some of the necessary pieces of equipment include: life vests; sound

Chumash Tribal History
In today's century, we look at canoes and think of them as just a thing people do as a hobby or what
others do as a fun activity on occasions. This was not the case for many years ago; the Chumash
would build and use canoes as a necessity to survive. It was an easier way for them to travel besides
walking and helpful for hunting fish in the sea. The Chumash would call these Tomols, meaning
boat in Chumash language. The Chumash having years of expertise on these canoes, they would
have an exact way and routine on how to make these boats; they would also have a certain group of
people that would make these great boats. The Chumash tomol gave the Chumash great
transportation and helped them for many years; it was a complex and time– consuming boat to build

tule balsas, dugout canoes, and the more famous plank canoe. The tule balsa canoe was a boat that
was made of bundles of tule and was assembled in only three days. This was a canoe they would
build when the area was running low on supplies and wood for the other canoes. To build this boat,
they would first need to cut down some tule, then let it dry while. Tule is a plant that would grow in
water areas and would be found off the coasts of areas. When the tule is dry, the Chumash would put
them into bundles and tie them together; each bundle would depend on how big the Chumash would
want the canoe. Unlike the other canoes, this canoe was never made with boards or planks; however,

Research Paper On Wakesurfing
If you have a cabin or live on a lake, you most likely own a boat and enjoy fishing or watersports.
Watersports have been getting more and more popular with many different things to do behind a
boat. One of these popular water sports is wakesurfing. Wakesufing has become the fastest growing
watersport today.
There are many things to consider before you actually go out and wakesurf. First of all you need the
correct boat. You are gonna need an inboard boat to be able to wakesurf. An inboard boat has the
propeller tucked under the boat and is not visible. Never wakesurf behind an outboard or
outboard/inboard boat. These type of boats have the propeller behind the boat. This is really
dangerous because you could fall and get injured by the propeller.

Getting up is the easiest part of wakesurfing. It may seem difficult and very frustrating at first but
once you get the hang of things it will seem so easy. One thing about wakesurfing is that you can't
give up. Just like anything else you have to practice to get better. To get up on a wakesurf board you
will need to lay in the water with the board flat on the water. The nose of the board should be
perpendicular to you and the boat. You want to lay on your back and put the heels of your feet on the
wakesurf board with your toes pointed up. One heel goes on the very back of the board and the other
goes in the middle. Your legs should be shoulder–width apart. Hold the handle of the rope and make
sure the rope is in between your legs. When you are situated, tell the boat driver to go. Once the rope
tightens, keep your arms straight and put some weight on your heels. This will flip the board up on
your feet. You also need to keep your knees up to your chest. This will help you pop up on the
board. If you do all this correctly the board should be on plane and you should be able to stand up.
Once you are up you should get the feel of the board by turning and digging into the

Personal Narrative Essay : My Vacations
Once upon a time, my family and I went on a vacation to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. This
vacation was an event in my life that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding

The plan was that we were going to kayak over to the island we would be staying on with all of our
stuff, then kayak back in the morning. That is not how it worked out. What we did not realize was
how far the island was from the actual lodge. I got my own kayak with a tow just in case. My sister

My dad gave up. He said that he will stay put, while my mom, sister, and I kayaked back to get help.
I though that this was a horrible idea, so at that moment I became the leader of my family. I gave a
little motivational speech to get everyone to start paddling. I attached the tow that was on the back
of my kayak on to the front of the canoe and helped pull the canoe back to the lodge. I felt like the
most heroic person the world has ever seen. I turned into what felt like an Olympic kayaker. My
adrenaline rushed through me and helped me through the extreme pain my arms were going through.
The hardest part of the way back was the last one hundred feet. A storm had started up and the wind
blew my dad and I into a private pier along the shore. I fought as hard as I could through the current
to get us out of there. The wind made it so much worse because it blew directly into us. With hard
work, determination, and coordination, my dad and I finally got out of the private pier which was
about one hundred feet away from the lodge's pier. When people say to do a certain task like your
life depended on it that is actually how I felt. My arms felt like they were going to fall off, but I was
so close to the pier and if I gave up, the current and the wind would take my dad and I one hundred
feet in the opposite direction we needed to go. I screamed and yelled at myself to push as hard as I
have ever pushed before and finally I made it to the pier. Everyone was

How Did Pontoon Boats Come From?
Where did the pontoon boat first come from? Who first decided to reinvent the boat and when did it
happen? These are the historical questions that we will be discussing in today's article. The basic
idea of a pontoon boat can be traced back to various ancient civilizations, but modern day pontoon
boats are only about 50 to 60 years old. While both of these types of pontoon boats, ancient and
modern, had the same idea behind them their operation, they had some differences as well. Ancient
pontoon boats were much more primitive across the board, some of them just making it into the

Business Plan For A Strategic Plan Essay
Introduction In this paper, I will select an organization and prepare a strategic plan to grow the
business over the next three years. This strategic plan will include certain criteria. That criteria
includes:
Describing my organization's history and major competitors.
I will explain the current situation of my organization in the market.
I will conduct a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) to determine
areas that offer opportunities for change.
Additionally, to the SWOT, I will choose three areas and why they are essential to the strategic plan.
I will also, use theories that support these three areas.
Lastly, I will explain my method to determine the level of success for my strategic plan.
The organization that I choose for my strategic plan is BoatUS. As I am currently serving in the
United States Coast Guard, I am very familiar with companies that work near or on the water. Boats
and other recreational vessels that operate on the water are also a passion of mine so I have interest
in this subject for when I retire from the Coast Guard.

Importance Of Trailer Brakes In Florida
If you recently purchased your first large boat, you need to make sure that you meet all the legal
requirements in Florida before you haul your boat down to the water. Florida has specific
regulations in place for any trailers that are used to haul larger loads, such as a big sail boat, in order
to keep you and the motorist around you safe on the road.
Trailer Brakes
The first thing you need to do is make sure that each wheel of your trailer is equipped with its own
set of brakes. You are required by law to have each wheel on your trailer have its own set of brakes
when you pull more than 3,000 pounds of weight.
Most larger boats will exceed this weight capacity; your owner's manual that came with your boat

If your trailer is hitched to your vehicle, you need to make sure that you have some safety back–ups
in place as well to keep your trailer attached. You can use chains or cables as a back–up method to
secure your trailer to your vehicle.
Trailer Permit
If you are towing an oversized boat, you will need to obtain a permit. Luckily, the state of Florida
has made it relatively easy to obtain a permit. You just have to go to the Florida Department of
Transportation (FDOT) website and use their Permit Application System (PAS) to apply for a
permit.
If you are only going to need to haul your boat a few times a year, you can apply for a trip permit
through the PAS. You can get approved online and print out your own permit. If you are going to be
hauling your boat on a regular basis, you are going to need to apply for an Annual permit. You can

Essay The Evolution of Displacement Hulls
Displacement hulls were first used at the turn of the century when internal combustion engines were
large and heavy. Morley S. Smith – lesliefield.com. When a displacement hull moves through the
water, it pushes water off to the sides. Most displacement hulls are long with a narrow bow. These
hulls are the easiest to maneuver at low speeds. Semi displacement hulls are slightly more flat. Semi
displacement hulls are identified by three factors: 1. The shape of the run. 2. The displacement
length ratio. 3. The amount of "V" or draught of the hull and they generally have a hard chine or

Also they can be very unstable. Stepped hulls can also be the most thrilling type of boat because of
the unnatural design and the feeling going so fast with the bow pointing more downward which
differs from many other types of boats.
The first type of speed boat hull was a rounded bottom displacement hull. These hulls were also
usually long, narrow and had a pointed bow. This caused the boat move faster and for the boat to be
able to maneuver better. Shortly after the displacement hulls were starting to be used, stepped hulls
and planing hulls were introduced. All three of these types had different speeds and different ways
of riding through the water. When the speed boat was first introduced, the hulls were more for a
smooth ride rather than a crazy ride, mixing the best of safety and speed. Of these three early hull
designs, the fastest was the stepped hull. Stepped hulls can be expected of move 10–15 percent
faster than a displacement hull or a planing hull. – naval design.co In the early years of speed boats,
a stepped hull could reach speeds up to 100 miles per hour. No matter what type of hull, the length
differed. Most differed from 20 to 40 feet , with some going up to 60 feet and some being as small
as 12 feet. As size differed with length, the same can be said with the beam. One thing different
from length is that the beam differs more between types of hulls. An example is that stepped hulls

Why Is A Starfish So Slow?
Abstract Why is a starfish so slow but never has tiny particles like algae and barnicles on it? The
answer is pedicellariae. Pedicellariae are the spikes on starfish. They engulf algae and barnicles

Hull coatings may have other functions in addition to their anti–fouling properties, such as acting as
a barrier against corrosion on metal hulls, or improving the flow of water past the hull of a fishing
vessel or high–performance racing yacht. These functions may be very helpful to boaters but the
effect on the environment but it still maintains its negative affect. Affects have been so bad some
ports banned bottom paints. For example, The Port of San Diego has banned copper–based paints.
Copper–based anti–fouling paints used to prevent marine growth from attaching to the hulls of
recreational boats have created high levels of copper in San Diego Bay. "The plan is to reduce the
copper levels in advance of regulatory requirements set by the Regional and State Water Quality
Control Boards" the port says.
As shown in the diagram to the diagram to the right, bottom paint is not helping keep algae off the
bottom of boats. When we create our version of bottom paint it would minimize the amount of
ocean harmed and it would keep algae off the bottom of boats. Some boat paints also include
chemicals that will kill

Cold Water Boating Tips for Winter
Spring will soon be here, and for many boaters, they are itching to get back to sailing the seas.
Unless of course, you are the type of boater that doesn't mind the cold and still goes out on their
boat! For many die–hard boaters, the cold is not enough of a reason for them to hang it up for the
season. However, it doesn't matter if you are an advanced boater, or a novice, there are some
important things to know before you head out onto the seas.
Extra attention and preparation should be taken before you head out on a boat during the winter. If
you want to brave the elements and participate in cold water boating, check out our winter boating

Make sure you always wear a life jacket when you are on the deck or in an open boat. This is
especially important if you plan on flying solo.
2. Be sure to dress properly if you want to participate in late–season boating. You can stay snug as a
bug if you dress correctly for the cold.
3. Invest in a good pair of ski goggles, this will help protect your eyes from the cold wind, and will
keep your eyes from tearing up.
4. Have on you signal flares, a signaling device (for visual distress signals and emergency locator
beacon), and an emergency communication device. This can be a hand held VHF radio, or even a
cell phone, just make sure you place it in a waterproof bag.
5. Have a re–boarding device available on board the boat. This can be a foot sling, ladder, or a swim
step.
6. Invest in a float–coat, they have a built–in PFD to help keep you warm and comfortable. This will
also act as a floatation device in case you go overboard, so you don't have to force on a traditional
life vest.
7. If you are riding solo, make sure you have an engine cut–off device installed. This will ensure that
your boat doesn't drive off if you happen to fall overboard for any reason.
8. It is VERY important for cold water boaters to have an inflatable life raft or dingy, as well as an

Creating Engaging Literacy Lesson Plan
Creating engaging literacy lesson plans takes a combination of effective instruction and material
interesting to students. Knowing your students is essential in the planning and implementing of any
lesson to ensure it reaches all students .Reading Comprehension: What Every Teacher Needs to
Know, states" Influential teachers are highly valued participants in the reading process. They know
the importance of every student comprehending successfully."(McLaughlin,2012 p. 433). Ensuring
all students have the opportunity to learn and comprehend the information presented in a lesson is
important to lesson creation. Creating and implementing a reading/writing lesson for this course,
took some extra care and a planning. Using literacy based instruction practices in combination with
STEM education proved to be very helpful as well as engaging to my students.
I feel this lesson motivated students to read more informational texts. By reading this story, students
were intrigued about the other different kinds of boats there are and how they are made and work.
This also encouraged students to use a fictional text to learn about real–world items. One student
asked what other kinds of books we could read to inspire us to build things. We discussed finding a
story about cars or buildings and then using different materials to create our own versions. This
lesson also introduced students to a way of applying what they learned from a fictional text, to other
subjects, in this case

Pros And Basics Of BUI
All U.S. states have laws against using alcohol and drugs while operating a boat or any other
watercraft. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard oversees federal laws against drinking on a boat and
arrests people for boating under the influence, or BUI. Conviction of a BUI crime is a serious
offense, and it can result in jail time, large monetary fines, suspension of boating and driver's
licenses, and increases in auto and boat insurance premiums.
Increases in BUI Arrests Laws against BUI have been enacted across the country, because operating
a boat while intoxicated leads to accidents, deaths, and property damage. The Coast Guard tracks
statistics regarding boating accidents and reported 4,158 accidents and 626 deaths ... Show more

States without formal marine law enforcement orders may also set–up BUI checkpoints for
questioning and inspecting boat operators and passengers for intoxication while boating. BUI
checkpoints operate in much the same way as roadside DUI checkpoints, and this type of
enforcement is leading to an increasing number of BUI arrests and convictions. [5].
Basics of BUI Charges The crime of boating under the influence is defined in most states as
operating any form of watercraft on a body of water with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or
above. A few states define a BUI charge as having a blood alcohol content of .1 percent or above.
In some states it is an additional crime if there is a minor onboard the boat, especially if the minor
has a blood alcohol level above .01 percent.
Elements of BUI Charges A person can be convicted of a BUI offense when they are operating any
watercraft and are intoxicated to any significant degree by alcohol, drugs, or both.
In most cases, this involves a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or higher for recreational vessels
and .04 percent of higher for commercial vessels.
The crime of BUI applies to all forms of watercraft, including sailboats, speedboats, yachts, fishing
boats, jet skis, and commercial vessels.

Why Is A Starfish So Slow But Never Has Tiny Particles...
Why is a starfish so slow but never has tiny particles like algae and barnicles on it? The answer is
pedicellariae. Pedicellariae are the spikes on starfish. They engulf algae and barnicles before they
can attach to the starfish. We're designing a boat paint that is able to mimic the functions of
pedicellariae. Boat paint has been affecting aquatic habitats for thousands of years and counting.
Scientists have tried changing the ingredients but no matter what they try, species of animals have
been harmed. Many of us just leave the dirty work of choosing bottom paint for our vessel to our
local boat repair yard. This is a good choice, since most yards know just what type of paint is best.
We should be aware of available choices and what bottom paints are environmentally friendly. This
would create a non–harmful way of keeping your boat bottom in good shape.
The year 2011 may be remembered as the year when sailors started thinking differently about
copper. After centuries of relying on toxic metals to ward off growth on the bottoms of boats, sailors
are awakening to a new era of environmental consequences, greater regulation, and breakthroughs in
science and paint technology. Generally, antifouling paints contain at least one biocide, an ingredient
capable of poisoning marine life that would cling to the hull, but getting these toxins to work usually
requires either friction or a chemical reaction. Florida has found 160 miles of estuaries contaminated

Boating Safely in the Water Essay
Boating safely in the water

Boating safely in the water All favorite outdoor activities should be done safely? One all–time
favorite activity enjoyed by many is boating on the water. Whether it is a twelve foot raft, or a forty
foot yacht, there are many important items to consider before leaving the dock. For example, is there
a personal flotation device for each passenger, to include the operator? What about alcoholic
beverages?
Did anyone bring any along or had anything to drink earlier; hope not, it is "illegal to drink alcoholic
beverages and operate a boat in all fifty States" (Carro, 2010). What about fire extinguishers? Are

Necessitating the use of life preservers is not limited to the United States; one Canadian official
fined a resident $200 for not having a life preserver aboard his boat (Ballingall, 2011). This problem
often occurs, because many people are over confident in their ability to swim away from a mishap,
or think ending up overboard only happens to other people.
Alcohol can distort an operator's ability to drive a boat as well as a car. There are many hidden
dangers in the water that require an immediate sober response, for instance, floating logs from old
boating docks often litter the waters. US Coast Guard statistics recorded "three hundred eight
boating accidents which resulted in one hundred fatalities and 300 injuries in 2009" (Kelley, 2007).
Furthermore, "Boating under the influence laws (BUI) are federally enforced by the US Coast
Guard" (Dunlap, 2011). These laws are in force for the protection of all boaters. Another good
example of boating under the influence is it can distract from paying attention to the depth finder.
The depth finder tells the operator how deep the water is beneath the boat. At twenty to thirty miles
per hour this can result in a sudden stop, resulting in extensive damage to the vessel, causing
personal injury, or possibly death. Fire safety is another important

The angle of incline of the propeller was an essential factor. The rudder size was also an influential
and key factor to this operation. Two rudders were made for the project, made of wood and coated in
nail polish as to prevent waterlogging. These rudders would then be attached to the ends of the boats
the objective being greater stability. There was a clear indicator of the best type of rudder since the
first test. The larger rudder by far allowed the boat to travel the fastest. As indicated on the chart
below (see figure 6), the larger rudder was quicker, on average, by .58 seconds. One reason as to
why may have been the fact the smaller rudder may have been crafted too small to make a
difference. The rudder was an important factor in the boats' speeds. The testing procedures may have
also been a factor in the results collected. For testing one would release the boat while the other
person would time how long it took to reach the end. With every test that was conducted, the boat
material would become increasingly waterlogged, corrupting our data. The boats would not float in
a straight line, thanks to the time constraints one would have to nudge it in the correct direction to
get accurate results. Overall, the testing may have been flawed and possibly inaccurate. When

Paints
Bottom paints and bottom paints for boats
Bottom paint is a covering applied to the lowermost point of a ship (hull) so as to get rid of growing
organisms that may attach to the boat especially at the lower parts or to protect the metallic parts of
the hull from corrosion. This is done to enhance the vessel's performance and sturdiness.
Another added advantage is the improved contact between a free flow mass of water and the hull of
a speedy boat enabling the boat to sail at a much faster speed.
Modern bottom paints are composed of biocides (chemical substance that hamper growth of marine
organisms), organotin compounds and lethal copper. Types of bottom paints SPC (Self polishing

Wash the hull surface carefully with a wax remover solvent and clean rags before you begin
sanding. Otherwise sanding a waxed hull only draws the wax into the scratches making it hard to
remove it. Stir By using a paint shaker, run it for a few minutes so as to distribute the copper and the
dye evenly throughout the paint. If you don't have it, decant half of the paint into a blending
container so that you can blend the remaining half thoroughly without spilling paint onto the ground.
Maintain scouring up the copper off the base of the container until the base feels clean. Mix in what
you poured off up to a point when the paint is standardized in color and evenness. Some areas won't
be protected if the copper is not well and evenly spread. Rolling the paint Revolve the bottom paint
on the hull using a roller cover. Extending the handle will make the job easier by keeping you clear
of small drops the roller will throw. Protect your body by wearing coats and gloves. Remember that
this paint contain chemicals which are highly fatal when they get absorbed by your body.
Load the basin of your paint dish with paint and begin the painting using your roller. Be quick
because many bottom paints dry fast. Every time you top up the paint dish, begin with mixing the
paint in the container so as to maintain the copper in suspension.
By the moment you are through, many bottom paints will be well dry to overcoat. It is also wise to

Wildwood Lake Canoe Company Casse Study Essay
Wildwood Lake Canoe Company
In January 2010, Allan Monroe was preparing for the April opening of the Wildwood Lake Canoe
Company (WLC), a canoe manufacturing shop in St. Mary's, Ontario. Monroe planned to build 30
canoes per year and he wondered what strategy and tactics would maximize his profits.
The initiative for WLC evolved from Monroe's canoeing and woodworking hobbies. Monroe had
canoed recreationally for more than 20 years and had built three canoes, which he sold after using
them each for a season. Last spring, when Monroe decided to purchase a canoe for the first time, he
suffered what he described as "sticker shock." He could not believe the price and poor quality of
retail canoes. Monroe saw an opportunity to build ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Monroe planned to produce 30 canoes in the first year and average one canoe every ten days, which
would leave 65 days to buffer any unforeseen production delays[1]. Monroe would have to work
seven days a week to maintain the production pace; however, he felt that he could handle a seven–
day schedule for two to three years. Although the first canoes were scheduled to take almost 12 days
to build, manufacturing time would gradually decrease. Monroe knew that he would have to invest
in some equipment which would include an estimated $5,530 for power equipment and accessories;
hand tools at $835; cutters, blades and bits at $800; benches, stands and cabinets for $1,600; forms
and jigs for $160; and office equipment for $3,055. Monroe projected that variable costs would total
$1,161 per canoe[2] and annual operating expenses would total $8,644[3].
The market for canoes followed the business cycle. In recessions, canoe sales suffered as many
prospective customers stopped recreational spending. Sales of premium–priced canoes were
especially vulnerable. The statistics showed that many companies were unable to survive the recent
recession that began in 2008; however, industry sales had been strong and improving over the past
year or so. Monroe was optimistic that growth would continue in the immediate future.
Promotion would consist of a website, advertisements in canoeing magazines and

Disadvantages Of Inflatable Kayak
A short list of common accessories would probably include such things as rod holders, tackle box
mountings and compartments, bait containers, and a wide variety of electronics such as fish finders,
GPS, cell phone holders, marine radios, air pumps for bait tanks and running lights. Obviously, it is
not advised to drill holes into an inflatable kayak! However, many enterprising DIY riggers have
found that a few plastic "D–rings" and some duct tape will make a handy group of mounting and
attachment points on an inflatable kayak. One of the latest and greatest discoveries among self–

Their light weight not only makes taking them along on a hike a definite plus, but also makes a nice
difference in getting the kayak out of your vehicle and to the shoreline even when you are able to
drive right up to the launch. On average, an inflatable kayak will weigh about half that of a similar
sized rigid kayak. Even many tandem inflatable kayaks weight less than single rigid kayaks. There is
no need for a trailer or roof rack, since they easily will fit into the trunk of even a compact car, or
into the back seat. This ability to fit into a small space adds another big benefit, storage of your
kayak in the off season. While storing your rigid kayak in the winter months usually means either
having sufficient garage space, a storage building, or an outside rack or cradle of some kind, a
deflated kayak will usually need no more storage space than that of a cooler. Finally there is the
price consideration. Inflatable kayaks are generally about half the cost of a similar sized rigid model.
The additional savings of not having to also purchase a roof rack or trailer has influenced many
fishermen to become kayak fishermen when price is their main

The Importance Of Weather Conditions In The Sea
Any experienced captain will tell you that weather conditions play a huge roll in decision making
while navigating any vessel. Seaworthiness does not rely on the size of your boat. How your boat
handles weather conditions are taken into consideration during the design and construction process.
Using your boat for what it is designed to do is key. Voyages into water ways and harsh weather that
your boat cannot handle can be disastrous. Different levels of experience determine your ability to
handle weather conditions. One boater may find certain heavy weather conditions to be manageable
while another may not. The type of waterway you're operating on has much to do with how
treacherous weather conditions will become. Navigating in deep, ... Show more content on

The zig–zag approach will enable you to leave your boat in the trough long enough to turn. You
need to minimize the time in the trough and being broad side by the swell, so you do not broach.
Running with the swell behind you
When running in front of the sea,, the swell comes from behind you and this can be challenging. The
stern can be swept and pushed side to side. Keep the stern perpendicular to the oncoming seas to
navigate these conditions.
Being lifted by heavy seas is reason for concern. Boats tend fall quickly down the slope crest to
trough. When the stern is high your propeller could rise out of the water. If the rudder loses contact
with the flow of water, it will be left useless. Your boat could yaw to one side and broach into the
trough.
Sliding down the wave fast enough to bury the bow is another reason for concern. Pitchpoling can
exists when the stern is being pushed. To take the swells off one quarter and the other try tacking
before the seas. When running before the seas consider towing a drogue to slow your speed. This
will allow the helmsman an easier time control the stern in the proper position. The heaving to
maneuver
When conditions are become violent beyond your control, you and the boat are taking too much
force it's time to for the heaving to maneuver. Depending on the type of boat, this maneuver keeps
the bow in to the wind or a tad off the wind and waves.

rebounds. The boating industry in general forecasts better days ahead. D. Long Term Industry
Outlook
There is a bright future for the sport boat industry; the market as a whole is expected to grow in the
near future. In 2006 the sport boat market had a total value of $6.9 billion; that value has climbed by
9.3% each year, and that trend is expected to continue for the next 3 years. This means that the sport
boat market will be worth $10.1 billion by 2014. This industry rebound is dependent upon the
recovery of the market and a general change in attitude of banks to lend more money for boat
purchases. In addition to this overall market growth and economic recovery, we can expect sport
boat sales to increase due to an increase in the number of boat purchasers. As the baby–boomers
reach retirement age, the number of boats sold can be expected to increase causing the overall
market to increase at a rate greater than the expected 9.3%. With this explosion in the sport boat
market, positive economic activity, and the increased willingness of banks to grant loans, it is
expected that the sport boat market will expand beyond all future expectations.4

systematic training. There are beginner 's lessons available for rookies. But advanced courses are
also available. So take the course that suits you and follow your instructions diligently. On the other
hand once you start considering yourself to be an expert, you can turn an instructor yourself and
help others.
Oh, no, oh, no, my boat is broke. I hear this every once in a while at my job as a kayak
salesperson/instructor. Hardly ever does a soft plastic boat come in with a life threatening injury.
Usually some nut has been dragging their Old Town Otter over a cement driveway. Well, duh, who 's
gonna win? The driveway or the soft plastic? But occasionally someone will come in with a crack in
their Eddyline or Hurricane thermoformed kayak. Now these boats are tough, they 're made of a
laminated ABS type plastic with an acrylic overlay. They 're very hard to break, and since they 're
pretty most people don 't drag them around. But accidents happen and boats will break given the
right circumstances. Paula 's pretty

Kneeboarding Research Paper
How to Kneeboard
One of the many fun recreations you could do in the water with a power boat is kneeboarding.
The name kneeboard is pretty self–explanatory; it is a board (tied on to a power boat) on which you
put your knees and ride. It is challenging at first, but is less challenging as skiing and is especially
fun and simple for children. When you start out your first time on the board, you do not want to get
on your knees immediately. In fact, you may want to just test it out by simply laying on the board.
After you get acquainted with how it reacts to your motions and the motions of the boat, you may
try to get on your knees slowly. Make sure you get on your knees when the boat is driven at a fast
but stable speed. When you are on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Make sure you are always wearing a life jacket. The New York State Parks says: "Anyone riding on
a personal watercraft must be wearing a securely fastened U.S. Coast Guard approved personal
flotation device. Type III jackets with a high impact rating are recommended for this activity. NYS
Nav. Law Section 73–a.1."(nysparks.com) If you are wearing a jacket, you will not drown if you
need to let go for any reason. You will bob up out of the water and the boat will come retrieve you.
However when you get tired of riding, signal the driver to stop. If the driver is experienced, he will
gradually slow down. Do not panic if you cannot stay balanced on your knees until you get to the
boat. Once slowing down, begin to gradually lie down on the board. That way you can reel yourself
in without having to swim back all the way to the boat. Kneeboarding is a very fun pastime and it
does not require you be super athletic. Once you get into it, you won't forget it. When you
understand and are able to do the steps demonstrated above, you can easily learn other thrilling
tricks. Riding a kneeboard is a great way to enjoy the water with your power

My Wild Hope Of A Future Career
Career (Wild Hope) My wild hope of a future career would be opening up my own business.
Growing up I watched my Dad start a couple of businesses and my hope is that in the future I can
open my own or start a new one with my Dad. Currently we are discussing buying out a company
that manufactures boats. This purchase would include the company name, and all the necessary
materials to mold a boat. My Dad currently wholesales cars and retails boats. The idea with this
company would be to manufacture the boats, as well as retail them. After getting the boats out in the
market we would start to wholesale the boats to other retailers across the United States. Three topics
in this class that can be related to my wild hope would include: pricing ... Show more content on

Pricing The Product Application When opening a business that will manufacture boats and then
retail them pricing is important especially when you get into wholesaling to other retailers. As
seller's we want to make enough revenue to cover cost and make a profit. But when customers are
looking to purchase a boat we want their perceived benefits to be greater than price to create more
value. A customer that buys a boat gives the seller money in exchange for a boat. Or they customer
trades in a boat plus cash in exchange for a boat. If sellers and customer's views have high
dissonance then it most likely won't lead to a purchase on the customer's part. Based on experience
in the boat industry and with the car industry the odds that someone goes into a retailer to purchase a
boat or vehicle at full price is very low. The textbook shows the price equation as, "price= list price
– incentives and allowances + extra fees." When pricing you want to take into consideration what
incentives and allowances you want to include and make sure your list price is high enough that
when you deduct incentives and allowance you are still making a profit. As the textbook states, "the
amount paid is not always the same as the list, or quoted, price because discounts, allowances and
extra fees" (pg 318).

Section 1: Motivation and Involvement (20 marks)
Select one level of from Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs that can be used to segment the
market and position the product/service.
To segment and position JOZOLI marina I will use Maslow's need hierarchy. The people that we are
looking to join our marina will be at the Social Needs stage because they will have met their most
basic needs, physiological needs such as food, water, air, shelter, etc.... The safety and security needs
have also been met since at the time where an individual is able to spend enough time on their boat
to make financially viable they have likely reached a point in time where they have a stable career,

Our employees are trained to take care of boats and will ensure that your boat is safe even if you are
not around.
Develop an involvement profile for a typical consumer of your chosen product/service and discuss
any key issues that would be relevant to a marketer. Use Figure 3–5 and Figure 3–6 on page 96 in
assessing the level of involvement that a prospective customer of your chosen product/service may
have.
There are four types of involvement: enduring, situational, cognitive and affective.
What leads to a high level involvement are the following factors: the perceived risk, personal
interest, probability of making the wrong decision, amount of pleasure to purchase and the
competing marinas. In the case of JOZOLI we will focus on the personal interest and the perceived
risk.
To measure the involvement we will ask some potential customers, and some existing to complete
the Semantic Differential Scales Below:
To Me: A Safe and First–Class Marina is: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
1. Important Unimportant
2. Relevant Irrelevant
3. Satisfying Unsatisfying
4. Exciting Unexciting
5. Meaningful Meaningless
6. Appealing Unappealing
7. Fascinating Ordinary
8. Priceless Worthless
9. Necessary Unnecessary

Narrative Essay : Blank Faced Redemption
Blank Faced Redemption
It was an early cold morning in November, when my dad and I piled into a 2001 Honda civic, and
began a frustrating drive into the city San Francisco. I was anxious, exited, and a little nervous. It
was the day of the big fall crew race, and I was ready to prove myself as a top high school rower,
having trained all summer to become faster and more disciplined. To that point, I had invested over
ten thousand hours in the sport of rowing, constantly training and dieting to improve my rowing
performance. Rowing was my life, influencing everything I did. My coach described rowing in one
word: "Pain". Rowing is extremely draining physically and mentally, so I began to focus and prepare
my mind for the beating I was about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I was already sweating, and my eyes were as wide as baseballs. I had never been more focused in
my life. As we crossed the start line, a light drizzle of rain began to fall. Rain is a rower's worst
nightmare. Not only does it make the oar handles wet and slippery, water also collects at the bottom
of the boat, making the boat heavier. I sighed, and prayed that the rain did not increase. Waiting
around at the start line for our race was unbearable. My mind began to replay our devastating defeat
last year, and a bunch of negative scenarios flooded into my head. What if our boat flipped? What if
one of our ores fell out and we were not able to continue the race? What if my body gives out? After
a bit more praying, I calmed down a refocused my attention to the upcoming race. This was my big
moment, and I was ready to do anything to prove myself. When our event was called at last, all the
boats in our event got in a line for a staggered start. Joey and I gave one last motivational talk to one
another, and we slowly inched our way to the starting line. As soon as I saw the flag drop, we dug
our oars into the murky water and pulled with all our might. With each stroke, our morale grew. We
were moving with high intensity, gliding across the water. It was not far into the race, when we
began to pass a boat. My arms and legs were beginning to tingle a little, but I pushed through and
pulled even harder. We passed that boat, and not long after, another boat began to come

Boating Research Paper

  • 1. Boating Research Paper Summer brings great weather which means an increase in recreational boating activity, there can be many dangers while boating, both from forces outside your boat and from things on your boat. Here are some suggestions for staying safe on the water during the boating season. The number one tip for staying safe out on the water is to always wear a life jacket while boating. You should make sure that there are enough personal flotation devices (PFDs) readily accessible on your boat for everyone out on the water with you. PFDs must be Coast Guard approved, in good and serviceable condition, and the appropriate size for the intended user. Check with your state boating safety officials and the Coast Guard for full regulations. Leaving alcohol on land can also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fire extinguisher should be mounted somewhere readily accessible and away from the galley or the engine where a fire is more likely to start. In addition to fire hazards, you can encounter problems from you gasoline system as well. If your boat uses gasoline for electrical generation, mechanical power, or propulsion, then you need a ventilation system. Depending on your boat, you'll either need a natural ventilation system (a supply opening or an exhaust opening) or a powered ventilation system. Check with the Coast Guard for information on your boat. In order to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, carry a carbon monoxide detector. The gas, which is odorless and colorless, can kill in minutes. Sources of carbon monoxide include improperly vented exhaust or combustion, ranging from fires to barbecue grills. Before you head out on the water, always check the weather forecast. Calm seas can turn into rough waters. Listen carefully to all weather and storm advisories. Your life raft should be checked annually to make sure it's in good working condition. The first website, which is on Shotover Jet was created in 2001, compared to my second website which is again Shotover jet, but this was created in 2014. For my third website I have chosen to use my own website I had designed in 2014, for Rotorua Adventure Tourism LTD. I will be discussing these three websites by outlining the websites specific contents and the elements that the website has used and by outlining the subjective and objective aspects of each webpage. Context Discuss technology of time, and how it could have impacted the design. Eg access to computers and internet speed Discuss how what was happening in the world could have affected the design, eg recession, people being aware of global warming, and NZ's clean green image In the 2001 Shotover Jet website: How did the people advertise, were there lots of design to choose from, who used websites (making a background of what are you going to say), eg in the 2001 census, over 37% households had access to internet , compared to in 2013 over 75% of households had access to internet. The possibility of the raceboat being a failure can result in bad publicity for Merbatty. The new marketing director, Jesper, is keen to develop a speedboat and compete in the global speedboat race as a marketing strategy. • 7. Argumentative Essay On Kayak Fishing Kayaks have been classic vessels for fishing, as opposed to using a big boat. Many people are flocking to kayak fishing because of its many benefits. Kayaks for fishing range from two hundred dollars to thirteen hundred dollars, much less than the cost of a boat (fishhound). Operating a boat takes a toll on the angler and his gear and it comes with a lot to think about, and it is hard to handle. Using a kayak instead of a boat allows access to non motorised water bodies, as well as height and length limited water bodies. Most people use kayaks because they provide peace and quiet, and they promote exercise benefits (Mac). Buying a kayak instead of a boat, and using artificial bait instead of natural bait is the best option because of the benefits ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anglers also prefer to use artificial bait this because they need to use much more equipment when using natural bait. (The Dorling 250). The equipment needed when using natural bait includes bobbers, hooks, line, swivels and weights. Searching for and storing for all of these items is time consuming and very expensive. Another downside to natural bait fishing occurs when fishing with live fish. When using this method, an angler would not always know in which direction the fish on the end of the line is going to swim. Using a live fish as bait can be quite difficult because it is hard to get a live fish to stay on a hook.when using artificial bait the only tackle you need is the lure. A very popular method of artificial bait is crankbaits. Crankbaits are easy to use, inexpensive and they are durable. Anglers prefer to use artificial bait over natural bait because natural bait lasts only a few hours, but artificial baits can last for years. Another plus to using artificial bait is that the angler will be able to cast into the water quickly. The natural bait fisherman will have to organise his tackle, prepare his rod, and tie everything together. Artificial baits are useful for kids because most crankbaits have an action. An action is when an angler has to move the rod a certain way for the lure to work. Lures that are good for kids can just be casted out and reeled straight back in. Some lures are made with one single barbless hook. The advantage to using a barbless hook is that once is on the hook the hook is easy to remove. In the event that an angler has put hook through his skin a barbless hook is eazy to take ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Then fold the paper in half a second time from left to right, or right to left, and reopen it so that it lies flat again. A vertical crease should be marked in the middle as a result of the fold. The folded edge of your paper should be facing away from you (upwards). Fold one corner of the top folded edge diagonally towards the middle crease of your paper until the edge is aligned with the middle crease. Repeat this step with the other corner. Your paper should now look a like large triangle with excess rectangular strips of paper at the bottom on the front and back side. The second step is to eliminate the excess bottom strips on the front and back side of your paper by folding them upwards on their corresponding side. Fold the front strip upwards while leaving the back strip alone. Then turn over your paper and fold the second remaining strip upwards as well. Do not fold both strips to one side because your paper will need an opening at the bottom. After folding the strips upwards, you should have a pointed hat with a flat rectangular brim. Good can actually come from making mistakes, by doing something wrong you are corrected and shown how to fix it by someone who has already made your mistake. Growing up I have made plenty of terrible decisions that lead to consequences in the end. Also, I have seen many of my close friends and family make mistakes that got them into trouble, but afterwards they learned a valuable lesson. I am going to tell you a story about one of my close friends who made a mistake and took full responsibility of his action and by doing so learned a valuable lesson that he can now pass on to people in his life. During the summer I fly down to Arkansas to visit my dad and work at a place called Camp Yorktown bay, which is a christian camp with different ages each week. We provide several different activities there and one of them is boats. At boats you can do any sport possible behind a boat that the kids want to learn and we the staff will teach them how. Our oldest age group, which is the last week we do an overnight trip on the boats. My Friend Chandler was on his way to fill up the boat after the long day of work. It was getting dark out and pretty soon he had to drive with knowledge of where the shallow spots were on the lake because you could no longer see the markers pointing out the shallow water. The mistake that he made was mixing up where he thought he was so he had no idea he was coming upon a very shallow part, next thing we he knows the boat makes a terrifying noise and it stops moving. I remember him telling me that he got really scared, and he had realized that the boat had ran aground. It wasn't that big of a shallow spot so by backing up he got free. The boat had seemed fine so he kept driving, when he got back to camp he realized that he had to tell our boss what had happened. The next morning right away Chandler went to our boss Jeff and started explaining what had happened that night. He took full responsibility and told my boss that he would try and pay for the damages somehow. But by being honest with him and not lying Jeff said that he did not have to pay any money for ... This caused the boat move faster and for the boat to be able to maneuver better. Shortly after the displacement hulls were starting to be used, stepped hulls and planing hulls were introduced. All three of these types had different speeds and different ways of riding through the water. When the speed boat was first introduced, the hulls were more for a smooth ride rather than a crazy ride, mixing the best of safety and speed. They know the importance of every student comprehending successfully."(McLaughlin,2012 p. 433). Ensuring all students have the opportunity to learn and comprehend the information presented in a lesson is important to lesson creation. Creating and implementing a reading/writing lesson for this course, took some extra care and a planning. Using literacy based instruction practices in combination with STEM education proved to be very helpful as well as engaging to my students. I feel this lesson motivated students to read more informational texts. By reading this story, students were intrigued about the other different kinds of boats there are and how they are made and work. This also encouraged students to use a fictional text to learn about real–world items. One student asked what other kinds of books we could read to inspire us to build things. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard oversees federal laws against drinking on a boat and arrests people for boating under the influence, or BUI. Conviction of a BUI crime is a serious offense, and it can result in jail time, large monetary fines, suspension of boating and driver's licenses, and increases in auto and boat insurance premiums. Increases in BUI Arrests Laws against BUI have been enacted across the country, because operating a boat while intoxicated leads to accidents, deaths, and property damage. States without formal marine law enforcement orders may also set–up BUI checkpoints for questioning and inspecting boat operators and passengers for intoxication while boating. BUI checkpoints operate in much the same way as roadside DUI checkpoints, and this type of enforcement is leading to an increasing number of BUI arrests and convictions. [5]. Basics of BUI Charges The crime of boating under the influence is defined in most states as operating any form of watercraft on a body of water with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or above. A few states define a BUI charge as having a blood alcohol content of .1 percent or above. In some states it is an additional crime if there is a minor onboard the boat, especially if the minor has a blood alcohol level above .01 percent. Elements of BUI Charges A person can be convicted of a BUI offense when they are operating any watercraft and are intoxicated to any significant degree by alcohol, drugs, or both. In most cases, this involves a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or higher for recreational vessels and .04 percent of higher for commercial vessels. • 47. Why Is A Starfish So Slow But Never Has Tiny Particles... Why is a starfish so slow but never has tiny particles like algae and barnicles on it? The answer is pedicellariae. Pedicellariae are the spikes on starfish. They engulf algae and barnicles before they can attach to the starfish. We're designing a boat paint that is able to mimic the functions of pedicellariae. Boat paint has been affecting aquatic habitats for thousands of years and counting. Scientists have tried changing the ingredients but no matter what they try, species of animals have been harmed. Many of us just leave the dirty work of choosing bottom paint for our vessel to our local boat repair yard. This is a good choice, since most yards know just what type of paint is best. We should be aware of available choices and what bottom paints are environmentally friendly. This would create a non–harmful way of keeping your boat bottom in good shape. The year 2011 may be remembered as the year when sailors started thinking differently about copper. After centuries of relying on toxic metals to ward off growth on the bottoms of boats, sailors are awakening to a new era of environmental consequences, greater regulation, and breakthroughs in science and paint technology. Generally, antifouling paints contain at least one biocide, an ingredient capable of poisoning marine life that would cling to the hull, but getting these toxins to work usually requires either friction or a chemical reaction. Necessitating the use of life preservers is not limited to the United States; one Canadian official fined a resident $200 for not having a life preserver aboard his boat (Ballingall, 2011). This problem often occurs, because many people are over confident in their ability to swim away from a mishap, or think ending up overboard only happens to other people. Alcohol can distort an operator's ability to drive a boat as well as a car. There are many hidden dangers in the water that require an immediate sober response, for instance, floating logs from old boating docks often litter the waters. US Coast Guard statistics recorded "three hundred eight boating accidents which resulted in one hundred fatalities and 300 injuries in 2009" (Kelley, 2007). Furthermore, "Boating under the influence laws (BUI) are federally enforced by the US Coast Guard" (Dunlap, 2011). These laws are in force for the protection of all boaters. Another good example of boating under the influence is it can distract from paying attention to the depth finder. The depth finder tells the operator how deep the water is beneath the boat. At twenty to thirty miles per hour this can result in a sudden stop, resulting in extensive damage to the vessel, causing personal injury, or possibly death. Fire safety is another important ... Two rudders were made for the project, made of wood and coated in nail polish as to prevent waterlogging. The larger rudder by far allowed the boat to travel the fastest. As indicated on the chart below (see figure 6), the larger rudder was quicker, on average, by .58 seconds. One reason as to why may have been the fact the smaller rudder may have been crafted too small to make a difference. The rudder was an important factor in the boats' speeds. The testing procedures may have also been a factor in the results collected. For testing one would release the boat while the other person would time how long it took to reach the end. With every test that was conducted, the boat material would become increasingly waterlogged, corrupting our data. The boats would not float in a straight line, thanks to the time constraints one would have to nudge it in the correct direction to get accurate results. If you don't have it, decant half of the paint into a blending container so that you can blend the remaining half thoroughly without spilling paint onto the ground. Wildwood Lake Canoe Company Casse Study Essay Wildwood Lake Canoe Company In January 2010, Allan Monroe was preparing for the April opening of the Wildwood Lake Canoe Company (WLC), a canoe manufacturing shop in St. Mary's, Ontario. Monroe planned to build 30 canoes per year and he wondered what strategy and tactics would maximize his profits. The initiative for WLC evolved from Monroe's canoeing and woodworking hobbies. Monroe had canoed recreationally for more than 20 years and had built three canoes, which he sold after using them each for a season. Last spring, when Monroe decided to purchase a canoe for the first time, he suffered what he described as "sticker shock." He could not believe the price and poor quality of retail canoes. Monroe would have to work seven days a week to maintain the production pace; however, he felt that he could handle a seven– day schedule for two to three years. Although the first canoes were scheduled to take almost 12 days to build, manufacturing time would gradually decrease. Monroe knew that he would have to invest in some equipment which would include an estimated $5,530 for power equipment and accessories; hand tools at $835; cutters, blades and bits at $800; benches, stands and cabinets for $1,600; forms and jigs for $160; and office equipment for $3,055. Monroe projected that variable costs would total $1,161 per canoe[2] and annual operating expenses would total $8,644[3]. The market for canoes followed the business cycle. In recessions, canoe sales suffered as many prospective customers stopped recreational spending. Sales of premium–priced canoes were especially vulnerable. The statistics showed that many companies were unable to survive the recent recession that began in 2008; however, industry sales had been strong and improving over the past year or so. Running with the swell behind you When running in front of the sea,, the swell comes from behind you and this can be challenging. The stern can be swept and pushed side to side. Keep the stern perpendicular to the oncoming seas to navigate these conditions. Being lifted by heavy seas is reason for concern. Boats tend fall quickly down the slope crest to trough. When the stern is high your propeller could rise out of the water. If the rudder loses contact with the flow of water, it will be left useless. Your boat could yaw to one side and broach into the trough. Sliding down the wave fast enough to bury the bow is another reason for concern. Pitchpoling can exists when the stern is being pushed. To take the swells off one quarter and the other try tacking before the seas. When running before the seas consider towing a drogue to slow your speed. This will allow the helmsman an easier time control the stern in the proper position. Growing up I watched my Dad start a couple of businesses and my hope is that in the future I can open my own or start a new one with my Dad. Currently we are discussing buying out a company that manufactures boats. This purchase would include the company name, and all the necessary materials to mold a boat. My Dad currently wholesales cars and retails boats. The idea with this company would be to manufacture the boats, as well as retail them. After getting the boats out in the market we would start to wholesale the boats to other retailers across the United States. Three topics in this class that can be related to my wild hope would include: pricing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pricing The Product Application When opening a business that will manufacture boats and then retail them pricing is important especially when you get into wholesaling to other retailers. As seller's we want to make enough revenue to cover cost and make a profit. But when customers are looking to purchase a boat we want their perceived benefits to be greater than price to create more value. A customer that buys a boat gives the seller money in exchange for a boat. Or they customer trades in a boat plus cash in exchange for a boat. If sellers and customer's views have high dissonance then it most likely won't lead to a purchase on the customer's part. Based on experience in the boat industry and with the car industry the odds that someone goes into a retailer to purchase a boat or vehicle at full price is very low. The textbook shows the price equation as, "price= list price – incentives and allowances + extra fees." When pricing you want to take into consideration what incentives and allowances you want to include and make sure your list price is high enough that when you deduct incentives and allowance you are still making a profit. As the textbook states, "the amount paid is not always the same as the list, or quoted, price because discounts, allowances and extra fees" (pg 318). • 80. Narrative Essay : Blank Faced Redemption Blank Faced Redemption It was an early cold morning in November, when my dad and I piled into a 2001 Honda civic, and began a frustrating drive into the city San Francisco. I was anxious, exited, and a little nervous. It was the day of the big fall crew race, and I was ready to prove myself as a top high school rower, having trained all summer to become faster and more disciplined. To that point, I had invested over ten thousand hours in the sport of rowing, constantly training and dieting to improve my rowing performance. Rowing was my life, influencing everything I did. My coach described rowing in one word: "Pain". Rowing is extremely draining physically and mentally, so I began to focus and prepare my mind for the beating I was about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was already sweating, and my eyes were as wide as baseballs. I had never been more focused in my life. As we crossed the start line, a light drizzle of rain began to fall. Rain is a rower's worst nightmare. Not only does it make the oar handles wet and slippery, water also collects at the bottom of the boat, making the boat heavier. I sighed, and prayed that the rain did not increase. Waiting around at the start line for our race was unbearable. My mind began to replay our devastating defeat last year, and a bunch of negative scenarios flooded into my head. What if our boat flipped? What if one of our ores fell out and we were not able to continue the race? What if my body gives out? After a bit more praying, I calmed down a refocused my attention to the upcoming race. This was my big moment, and I was ready to do anything to prove myself. When our event was called at last, all the boats in our event got in a line for a staggered start. Joey and I gave one last motivational talk to one another, and we slowly inched our way to the starting line. As soon as I saw the flag drop, we dug our oars into the murky water and pulled with all our might. With each stroke, our morale grew. We were moving with high intensity, gliding across the water. It was not far into the race, when we began to pass a boat. My arms and legs were beginning to tingle a little, but I pushed through and pulled even harder. We passed that boat, and not long after, another boat began to come ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
