Studio system made appearance in Bombay, Calcutta and
Madras
In Bombay, V. Shantaram set up ‘Prabhat Film Co.’
He made films under his studio at regular intervals
Most of the films were directed by Shantaram
Ayodhyacha Raja (1932), Sant Tukaram (1936) &
Amar Jyothi (1936)

The Prabhat Film Co. later moved to Pune
In 1935, Himansu Rai started ‘Bombay Talkies’
Imperial Film Co. another major studio in Bombay
JBH Wadia established ‘Wadia Movie Tone’
The studio credited the making of first thriller shot on location
Toofan Mail, (1932), Jai Bharat (1936) & Hunterwali (1935)

New Theatre Co., was established in Calcutta
It produced Chandidas (1932), Devdas (1936)
K.C. Barua’s Devdas was made in Hindi & Bengali
The same studio introduced the Bimal Roy into silver screen
Do Bigha Zameen (1953)
Madras United Artists- made films in Tamil, Telugu and
Malayalam
The Southern Studio produced films also in Hindi
5. DECLINE OF THE STUDIO SYSTEM
During the 1940s, big companies lost their hold on Studio
systems
Shantaram left Prabhat in 1941
He started making films in his won banner
This movement led to raise the star system in India
Formula films and block money enters into the industry
Shantaram made ‘Journey of Dr. Kotnis’, Dhatri Ke Lal
Mehaboob Khan made ‘Mother India’
6. THE GOLDEN AGE
During the 1950s &60s Sohrab Modi and Mehboob Khan continued film
ventures
Modi’s ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’(1953) was India’s first colour feature
Raj Kapoor & Guru Dutt started their career in Bombay Talkies
Later, Raj Kapoor acted and directed his own pictures
He made Awara, Shri 420, Mera Naam Joker, Sangam etc
In 1970s, he directed Bobby, Satyam Shivam Sundaram and Ram Teri Ganga
Maili
His movies runaway successes in Russia and the Arab countries
7. FOREIGN PRODUCTION
Indian production houses started tie ups with foreign
production companies
Pardesi was made with the Indo-Soviet co-production
Guru Dutta, Mehboob Khan, V. Shantaram made their mark on
Indian cinema
In 1960s, Mughal E Azam stood as a Costume epic story.
In 1970s, the angry young man show started on silver screen
Bobby, Sholay, Zanzeer, Amar Akbar Antony.
