2. EVOLUTION OF DOCUMENTARY
 It’s a method of recording the lives and success stories
 M.D. Bhat committee defined the word documentary
 “all methods of recording on celluloid any aspect of reality,
interpreted either by factual shooting”.
 In 1922, Robert Flaherty, made the film of an ‘Eskimo family’ in
Arctic regions
 The incident stood as the beginning.

3. EVOLUTION OF DOCUMENTARY
 John Grierson popularized as an artistic form
 He shot the ‘Drifters’ on the North sea
 It provided a glimpse of the fisherman of the region.
 By the 1930s, it became an established form
 We can find the several genres in non-fiction

 Experimental
 Abstract

4. DOCUMENTARY IN INDIA
 Video documentary is the most recent trend
 CENDIT (New Delhi) & SEWA (Ahmadabad) promoted the
video documentary
 P.V. Pathy (Paris), D.G. Tendulkar (Moscow) & K.S. Hirlekar
led the development of Indian documentary.
 They introduced editing, a vivid commentary style, Music &
Sound effects
 During 1920 and 1940 more than 1500 short films were
produced
 In 1947, Paul Zils established documentary Unit in India.

5. DOCUMENTARY IN INDIA
 Paul Zils made several short films together with Fali Billimoria
 Hindustan Hamara
 ZalZala
 The Vanishing Tribe
 In 1949 and 50s as many as 32 black and white documentaries
were made
 The first Indian documentary, ‘Rajasthan series-I’
 Won the international award
 In 1955, Films Division made the first feature length
documentary

 Shyam Bengal- Close to Nature
 Tapan Sinha-Song of the Snows
 Several others made a valuable contribution.



7. THE INDIAN NEWSREEL
 The short film in India has long history
 Even before first feature film was produced in 1912
 D.G. Phalke made many short films both in the Silent and
Talkies Era
 The common themes were ‘Political Meetings’, ‘Funerals’,
‘National Movement’, ‘Strikes’, ‘Visits of Foreign Dignitaries’.
 Bombay Talkies, Maharashtra Film Company & Kohinoor and
Many other companies made short films
 Durbar of Delhi (1903 to 1911) were filmed

8. THE INDIAN NEWSREEL
 During WW-II, Govt. set up the ‘Film Advisory Board’
 Later, it became Information Films of India (IFI)
 Newsreels were distributed under the banner of ‘The Indian News
Parade’.
 In 1946, it was ceased to close but in 1948, Indian News Review was
started.
 It emphasized necessity of educating the masses
 The emphasize also given on Family Planning, Green Revolution &
Savings etc.
 Directorate of field publicity runs over 150 units screens newsreels

9. FILM DIVISION
 Film division was set up in Bombay at the end of 1948.
 The object of the FD is to chalked out the
 Production & Distribution of News Reels
 Besides it also aimed to mobilize the medium
of film
 First year FD focus on Newsreels later on
Documentaries only
 First two decades FD made 27K films
