Editor's Notes
Transaction processing systems are an essential part of a companies technical operations. It is used for collecting, recording and manipulating information related to a company’s daily routine (Jones, 2007). Human resources will use this type of system to track employee records which may include performance reviews, pay rate increase or decreases, or even disciplinary action records. On another note, transaction processing systems are beneficial to IT departments in the sense that it is a company's technological foundation. TPS, for example, is used to track the progress of an employee, therefore, giving the company an advantage by having a better understanding of its operations.
Knowledge Management Systems are used to identify, filter, and analyze data from the transaction processing systems. This is important to a companies functionality and success because problem area’s can be found and addressed.
Expert system and artificial intelligence are used more and more by companies who need to quickly identify areas of improvement within the company. In addition, this particular system, as opposed to the TP and KM systems, will use Artificial Intelligence to come up with solutions. AI can be a time saver and very beneficial, however companies cannot rely on only this for improvements. It is important for those involved to analyze these proposed resolutions to ensure success. Please note the definition of Artificial Intelligence - an IT system that reasons and learns like a human being (Jones, 2007).
ERP Systems are beneficial because they bring departments within a company together as a whole so that one department is not as effective as it can be without the help of another.
E-Commerce has become more popular as technology progresses. Business-to-business relations have helped lower costs to consumers by the sharing of information. Business-to-Customer transactions allow the customer to purchase a service or product online, which is more convenient than going to a retailer or wholesaler.
