• 6000 acts of pilotage per year
• Self employed co-operative
• Varied pilotage area covering 10 ports and
terminals
• First UK port to be ISPO accredited
5. Why ISPO?
• Weak UK Pilotage legislation and regulation –
pilotage controlled by commercial interests
• Threat of less qualified / cheaper competition
• Professional improvement – looking at what
we do and how / why we do it

• Continuous improvement – PPE, PMX, CPD /
Training
• Better engagement with our customers – ship
masters, agents, port operators, oil majors and
terminals
• Involvement with MAJOR PROJECTS
9. BP – post Deepwater Horizon
• BP conducted a systematic review of all major
risks to which their worldwide assets were
exposed
• Risk profile at BP Hound Point judged to be
“the highest level irrespective of probability”
• Low probability but high risk
15. UK Aircraft Carrier Project
• Two aircraft carriers
• £6.2 billion (US$8.7 billion) project
• Four companies – 7 shipyards
• Final assembly at Rosyth, Scotland

Forth Pilots – Crown Exemption
• Contractors were required to have a Quality
and Safety Management System
• ISPO accreditation was crucial
18. Queensferry Crossing Project
• £4 billion (US$5 billion) multi national project
• Caissons fabricated in Poland
• Bridge sections fabricated in China
• 233 bridge sections to be moved by barge
• Six years work

• Constructors did not have to use Forth Pilots
• All contractors were required to have a Quality
and Safety Management System in place
• ISPO and Lloyds accreditation were crucial in
winning the contract

decided to seek the views of our own pilots

of Forth Pilots has been improved by ISPO
accreditation
• 84% agreed or strongly agreed

customers have benefitted from ISPO
