Weld Height / Power Relationship
With a monitoring system in place, there is a world of meaningul data mining
that can take place. Understanding the relationships and causality of how one
affects the other is an important step. In this issue we look at weld shape-
height.
Weld bead shape is a strong indicator of related issues in the process of prouc-
ing tube and pipe. The grey areas in the trend chart below show some
clear signs that something is amis. At the time this data was captured the weld
height signal was producing a fault signal. Why was this happening ?

At the entriy of the monitoring is the ability to see the weld. For tube and pipe
proucers with TIG and Laser weld lines, it does help the operator with a basis of
understanding about what is happening at the weld.
iCam.WLS is our product platform to offer a visual aid for real time weld visu-
alization. The video feed can be sent directly to a display or with our digital
version to a PC. In the image presented below, the keyhole and weld pool is
visible. The laser welder was a 5kw C02 with a travel speed of 9m/min.

In the chart below, at the same time as the weld height was trig-
gering a fault, the weld temperature was also triggering a fault. (
red line) A step back from weld temperature, the input power was
fluctuating (blue line).
These singals were occuring at the same instance. The cause
was quickly identified as an electrical issue with the welder.
The system assisted quality control in identifiying a disturbance,
leading to a defect. As a result of detection, the dollar
benefit to the client was estimated to be $7,000.00
THe exercise demonstrated the benefit of having more informa-
tion so as to understand the cause and effect relationship in a
easy to understand and timely manner. This is extremely valuable
to not only prevent loss, but to also educate the line staff.
Weld upset, squeeze out, weld bead is not something that read-
ily comes to mind as a valuable piece of information, but it does
tell a story. What Radian does is capture the story in real time to
allow the users of the data gain knowledge and ultimately move
towards a more efficient, high yield process.
