2. Women rights activist Kamla Bhasin passes away at 75
Women rights activist, poet, and author Kamla Bhasin passed away at the
age of 75 on September 25, 2021. She was suffering from cancer and
pulmonary edema.
Bhasin was famous for being a part of ‘One Billion Rising’ campaign in
South Asia among other important movements, she was a prominent voice
in the field of the women’s rights movement in India and across South Asian
countries.
Bhasin wrote several books and poems on gender theory, feminism, and
patriarchy including ‘Kyunki main ladki hoon, mujhe padhna hai (Because I
am a girl, I must study).
These were translated into more than 30 languages. Bhasin was also the
South Asia coordinator of the ‘One Billion Rising’ campaign. She also recited
her famous poem Azadi at an event of One Billion Rising in 2013.
In 2017, Bhasin was awarded ‘The Laadli Lifetime Achievement Award’
during the 1st edition of South Asia Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for
her work in women’s development in Asia.

3. VS Pathania appointed as Additional Director
General of Indian Coast Guard
The Ministry of Defence has appointed Virendra Singh Pathania as
the Additional Director General of the Indian Coast Guard
headquarters in New Delhi.
The Government of India issued the posting order of VS Pathania on
September 24, 2021, and he will take charge of the position on
September 30. Pathania was till now in charge of the force’s Eastern
Seaboard in Vizag.
The post of the Additional Director General of the Indian Coast Guard
has been lying vacant for months after the previous officer took
premature retirement months after his superannuation.

4. PM Modi US Visit 2021: PM Modi holds
bilateral talks with US President Joe Biden
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 24, 2021, met US
President Joe Biden for their first in-person bilateral meeting at the
White House.
Both leaders during their bilateral talks deliberated on key challenges
such as COVID, climate change, counter-terrorism, and how to
further scale-up cooperation between India and the US across
different spheres. While hosting PM Modi at the White House, Biden
tweeted, “We launch a new chapter in the history of US-India ties.
Our two nations are the largest democracies in the world.”

5. Quad Summit 2021 Highlights: From Quad fellowship to
India’s promise of 8 million Vaccine doses
US President Joe Biden hosted the first-ever Quad
(Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) leaders’ Summit at the White
House on September 24, 2021.
Quad Summit 2021 was attended by PM Modi, President
Biden, Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, and Australian
Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
Reportedly, the Quad leaders summit was structured on-
COVID-19 response; Afghanistan & Regional Security; Tech &
Cyber Security; and Climate.
The Quad members are the grouping of four nations- India,
the US, Australia, and Japan. This was also the first-ever in-
person Quad meet. The virtual meeting of the leaders was
held in March 2021.
