Food Systems Dashboard: Shaping Decisions on Food Systems Through Data
1. Food Systems Dashboard
Shaping Decisions on Food Systems Through Data

2. Why a food systems dashboard?
Increased international attention on how food
systems shape and are shaped by diets, health,
environment, climate and livelihoods
Policymakers are often in the dark on how
to manage their food systems and need to
know where and how to start
There is a need for tools that
contextualize food systems and their
linkages to diets, nutrition and other
development outcomes
Food systems data is found across many
different databases, sometimes hard to
find, and not pulled together cohesively
3. Goals of the Dashboard
Describe: Improve stakeholder
understanding of national food systems
Diagnose: Enable stakeholders to compare
food systems across countries
Decide: Suggest priority areas of action and
necessary actors to improve food system
contributions to diets and nutrition

Number of indicators is
approximate and we are constantly looking to
add quality data that has a value add
Indicators need to capture many countries, not
just high-income countries
9. The Sustainability of Tools
Many tools out there, but they all do different things depending
on the interests of their creators, and where they feel there is a
need for more visual information.
The question is, how much are these used to aid in decision
making? Especially in crisis situations.
The FS Dashboard struggles with:
• Gaps in data – no data, outdated data, closed data
• Ensuring visualizations are easy to understand
• Getting sub-national context to make it more useful in
national decision making
