2. The birds in the province of Kilkis and particularly those in
lake Kerkini,are protected by international conventions,
like Ramsar Convention and the networking programme
called “Natura 2000”.
The Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental
treaty that provides the framework for national action
and international cooperation for the conservation and
wise use of wetlands and their resources.
The Networking Programme “Natura 2000” is a
European-wide network of sites designed to protect the
most seriously threatened habitats and species across
Europe.
3. Birds found in our territory
Grey Heron (Σταχτοτσικνάδες), the biggest in Europe
(almost 90cm)
Common Tern (Βαλτογλάρονα),
Little egret (Λευκοτσικνιάδες), one of the most common
Herons,
Eleonora’s Falcon (Μαυροπετρίτες), medium sized, the
most important falcon found in Greece
Ringed plover (Χαραδριοί)
Red-throated Pipit (Χαμοκελάδες), a small passerine
bird,
Greater Short-toed Lark (Μικρογαλιάνδρες), a small
passerine bird,
Black Stork (Μαυροπελαργοί), 95 to 100 cm tall with a
wingspan of 144 to 155 cm.
8. Characteristic birds of our homeland
Dalmatian Pelican, one of
the biggest, in terms of
size, species of birds in
the world. It is found in
Lake Kerkini and it is
among the rarest species
of birds, thus it is
protected by international
treaties.
9. Pygmy Cormorant. It is a
rare species of bird and it
is is threatened by the
degradation of wetlands.
It is also protected by
international treaties.
