3. Today
You will be learning about the technical issues you
will need to consider when producing video for
online.
4. By the end of the lesson, you
MUST understand the technical considerations video producers
face when working with online video.
SHOULD explain the different technical considerations video
producers must face when producing video for the internet.
COULD explain how YouTube & Vimeo handle online video
differently
5. What do you need to think about when producing
online video?
1. Your intended platform (YouTube? Vimeo?)
2. The platforms maximum resolution versus your videos
max resolution (SD? HD? 2K? 4K?)
3. Your videos aspect ratio
4. The different types of video file formats acceptable on
your chosen platform
6. Exporting your video
Before we upload our video to a VOD service, we need to
export it from our editing software.
When we export our video from Premiere we can change
several options. What can we change?
● File format
● Codec
● Aspect ratio
● Audio compression
7. File formats
We can save our video in a
range of different file
formats. How can we tell
what format a file is?
8. File formats
Different file formats have
their own strengths &
weaknesses.
EG. SWF requires
Macromedia Flash to be
installed on the users
computer.
9. File formats
What is the most popular
file format? Why do you
think that is?
.MP4
10. What is compression?
Compression is the process of
writing the video file so that it
is smaller than the original.
Why do online video producers
need to know about
compression?
11. Lossy vs Lossless compression
There are 2 types of compression, lossy & lossless:
● Lossy compression involves losing parts of the videos data that
aren’t required.
● What do you think lossless compression is?
● What might the problems of lossless compression be?
● The videos compression is set during export, when the video
editor chooses a video codec (h264, ProRes 422, ProRes 422 HQ
etc…)
13. What different aspect ratios does YouTube support?
What happens if you film in an
aspect ratio YouTube doesn’t
support?
● Letterbox is when YouTube
crops the videos top and
bottom bars.
● Pillarbox is when YouTube
crops the sides of the video.
14. Playback: YouTube vs Vimeo
What different options
can the viewer control
on YouTube & Vimeo?
15. DRM (Digital Rights Management)
1. Who owns the rights to content you produced?
2. Are you using other creators IP in your video?
3. How does YouTube & Vimeo protect the rights of IP
holders?
16. TASK 1: online video
1. Compare the .MOV & .FLV file formats. What are their strengths &
weaknesses? Which is better when uploading to YouTube, and why?
2. What is DRM? Compare how Youtube & Vimeo protect users & right-
holders IP.
3. What is video resolution? Compare the different resolutions of video
that YouTube and Vimeo each support.
4. What are aspect ratios? Compare the different aspect ratios that video
YouTube & Vimeo each support.
5. What different video file formats are there? What is the difference
between lossless & lossy compression? What is the H264 codec?
