Discussion 1: Developments in Cognitive Psychology Phrenologists in nineteenth-century Victorian England believed that aspects of a person—such as weight, temperament, and organ function—represented themselves as bumps on the head. By fingering the ridges on the skulls of individuals, practitioners believed that they could make determinations about any number of somatic and psychological qualities. Humans have long sought to understand how the brain functions to create the self—how it “knows.” This search has evolved into today’s study of cognition. Long dismissed by the scientific community, the pseudoscience of phrenology gave way to a twentieth-century understanding of neurological function as a general mystery that science had yet to solve. This belief persisted into the 1990s, until advances in technology and theory development brought about an exponential increase in neurologists’ understanding of cognitive processes. With the advent of imaging technology, neurologists, psychologists, and even laypersons have access to “pictures of the mind.” When bolstered by theory and research, these images expand our awareness of the ways in which the brain helps us to think, feel, and act (Cacioppo, Berntson, & Nusbaum, 2008). Unlike the original school of thought based on speculation, cognitive psychology assumes that abnormalities arise from the impaired cognition of the world around us or the people that we interact. Cognitive deficiencies such as the lack of planning or distortions such as the inaccurate processing of information cause such faults. Another change brought about by the school of thought is that cognition affects the perception of what is around us. Psychologists better understood how cognition distorted in the way human being viewed as what they saw, as explained by irrational thinking and cognitive triad, by Ellis (1962) and Beck (1967) respectively (Ellis, 1962). The school of thought brought new understanding to psychologists as to why people behave the way that they do and the cause of certain behavioral actions portrayed by the human being. Another principle brought about by cognitive psychology is that human beings interact with the world through their mental representation of the same. It brought an understanding of human behavior especially of where behavior or emotions exhibited by people are at times disorder. Psychologists derive the answer to the above thought through cognitive psychology, proving that if the mental representation is inaccurate, so will human emotions and behavior be (Solso, MacLin & MacLin, 1998). Cognitive psychology we based on ‘what if' questions where psychologists create constructs (models in mind). The psychological field tends to question the reliability of our memory or mind to make judgments that affect the day to day behaviors we portray. Five years earlier, he’d suffered a head trauma in a motorcycle accident, and since then he hadn’t spoken. He was said to be in a “vegetative state.” A neuroscientist named Martin Monti sat in the next room, along with a few other researchers. For years, Monti and his postdoctoral adviser, Adrian Owen, had been studying vegetative patients, and they had developed two controversial hypotheses. First, they believed that someone could lose the ability to move or even blink while still being conscious; second, they thought that they had devised a method for communicating with such “locked-in” people by detecting their unspoken thoughts. In a sense, their strategy was simple. Neurons use oxygen, which is carried through the bloodstream inside molecules of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin contains iron, and, by tracking the iron, the magnets in fMRI machines can build maps of brain activity. Picking out signs of consciousness amid the swirl seemed nearly impossible. But, through trial and error, Owen’s group had devised a clever protocol. They’d discovered that if a person imagined walking around her house there was a spike of activity in her parahippocampal gyrus—a finger-shaped area buried deep in the temporal lobe. Imagining playing tennis, by contrast, activated the premotor cortex, which sits on a ridge near the skull. The activity was clear enough to be seen in real-time with an fMRI machine. In a 2006 study published in the journal Science, the researchers reported that they had asked a locked-in person to think about tennis, and seen, on her brain scan, that she had done so. With the young man, known as Patient 23, Monti and Owen were taking a further step: attempting to have a conversation. They would pose a question and tell him that he could signal “yes” by imagining playing tennis, or “no” by thinking about walking around his house. In the scanner control room, a monitor displayed a cross-section of Patient 23’s brain. As different areas consumed blood oxygen, they shimmered red, then bright orange. Monti knew where to look to spot the yes and the no signals. He switched on the intercom and explained the system to Patient 23. Then he asked the first question: “Is your father’s name Alexander?” The man’s premotor cortex lit up. Culturing the adolescent brain: what can neuroscience learn from anthropology? Suparna Choudhury Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, 22 Boltzmannstrasse, Dahlem, D-14195, Berlin, Germany Cultural neuroscience is set to flourish in the next few years. As the field develops, it is necessary to reflect on what is meant by ’culture’ and how this can be translated for the laboratory context. This article uses the example of the adolescent brain to discuss three aspects of culture that may help us to shape and reframe questions, interpretations and applications in cultural neuroscience: cultural contingencies of categories, cultural differences in experience and cultural context of neuroscience research. The last few years have seen a sudden increase in the study of adolescence as a period of both structural and functional plasticity, with new brain-based explanations of teenage behaviour being taken up in education, policy and medicine. However, the concept of adolescence, as an object of behavioural science, took shape relatively recently, not much more than a hundred years ago and was shaped by a number of cultural and historical factors. Moreover, research in anthropology and cross-cultural psychology has shown that the experience of adolescence, as a period of the lifespan, is variable and contingent upon culture. The emerging field of cultural neuroscience has begun to tackle the question of cultural differences in social cognitive processing in adults. In this article, I explore what a cultural neuroscience can mean in the case of adolescence. I consider how to integrate perspectives from social neuroscience and anthropology to conceptualize, and to empirically study, adolescence as a culturally variable phenomenon, which, itself, has been culturally constructed. Keywords: adolescence; culture; context; brain development; neuroscience; anthropology INTRODUCTION The recent emergence of cultural neuroscience represents an important challenge to the assumption of universality of the neural mechanisms associated with perceptual, attentional and social interaction processes. New data from functional neuroimaging studies mirror findings from cross- cultural psychology research, by showing differential brain activation patterns, in terms of degree and location, among adult individuals of different cultural groups engaged in a variety of cognitive tasks (see Han & Northoff, 2008 for a review). Certainly, with the advancement of neuroimaging technologies, and the formation of new interdisciplinary fields such as social neuroscience, neuroethics and most recently cultural neuroscience, there has been a renewed interest in ‘neural underpinnings’ of categories, or kinds, of people. The possibility of seeing the living brain in action has stimulated a drive to characterize these categories of people�for example, male and female, Republican and Democrat, prosocial and antisocial, Eastern and Western�in terms of neural sign.
