2. Type of Test Purpose of the Test
Aptitude Tests
Assess second language learners (2 LLs) general ability in learning a
language (any language) prior to actual instruction in the
Admission Test
Are used for screening purposes, to make gross decisions (such as in or
out) regarding 2LLs ability to undertake a program of study
Progress Tests
Assign 2LLs to appropriate levels of instruction within a particular
program; such as tests are related to course objectives.
Placement Tests
Identify 2LLs particular existing strength and weakness in order to help
teachers tailor to fit 2LLs needs.
Diagnostic Tests
Are used during a course of study to provide information about 2lls
relative mastery of or difficulty with portions of the curriculum
Achievement Tests
Assess 2LLS accomplishments relative to a particular curriculum
usually at the end of course study.
Proficiency Tests
Assess 2LLs ability in the target language independent of any particular
curriculum; provide a general assessment of all prior learning and/or
acquisition
Dominance Tests
Assess 2LLs relative strength in two languages to see which the stronger
language is.
