Reading
C Directions: Read the text below. Then, read the questions that follow it and circle the
correct answer (A, B, C or D) to each one.
Appearance and Personality
Ask a close friend to describe you and they are most likely to mention your physical features – like your hair colour
or build – before they talk about your personality. However, how we look isn’t everything. What’s inside matters just
as much!
It’s true, though, that our appearance plays a huge role in first impressions. After all, when we meet someone new,
we look at them first – and in that short space before we speak to them, we often judge their character. For some
reason, we don’t wait for more information to decide whether we like them or not.
In fact, a recent study found that 33% of bosses decide within the first 90 seconds of an interview to hire someone
or not. These 90 seconds don’t involve a lot of talk – instead the interviewer mainly makes the decision based on
the interviewee’s appearance!
It’s important to remember, though, that we can get it completely wrong! We often think that people with sharp
features are serious – but they could be really fun-loving! Both our appearance and personality make up who we
are – but it takes some time to get to know a person. So, when you meet someone for the first time, don’t make
quick judgements. As the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover!
11 According to the writer, the way we look is …
A less important than our personality.
B not important to close friends.
C more important than our personality.
D equally important to our personality.
12 Before we start speaking to a new person, we
usually …
A wait for them to speak first.
B worry whether they will like us.
C spend a long time judging them.
D decide what personality they have.
13 According to a recent study, 33% of bosses …
A want to end job interviews after 90 seconds.
B ignore an interviewee’s appearance.
C take 90 seconds to judge an interviewee.
D do not talk to an interviewee for the first
90 seconds.
14 The writer says that …
A we can never really know a person’s
character.
B we cannot tell what someone is like right
away.
C people with sharp features are usually
serious.
D people are usually right about their first
impressions.
15 The writer advises us to …
A wait before forming an opinion of someone.
B pay attention to how someone looks.
C read books about how to judge people.
D take care of our appearance.
