C Directions: Read the text below. Then, read the questions that follow it and circle the
correct answer (A, B, C or D) to each one.
Identify Theft
Every two seconds, someone becomes the victim of the world’s fastest growing crime: identity theft.
Identity theft happens when somebody uses our personal information to commit a crime. This information can
include our name, date of birth or credit card details, and it can allow identity thieves to buy things using our
money.
The problem is that we live in a world of information exchange. Every day, we have to enter details about ourselves
on the Net and it’s easy for this information to fall into the wrong hands. And we often don’t know about it until we
check our bank accounts!
Identity theft usually happens over the Internet, so the thief and the victim are often in different countries. This
means that the police have to work with another country’s police force to make an arrest – and this doesn’t always
happen. Actually, only around one in 700 identity theft crimes lead to an arrest. Identity thieves aren’t always
thousands of miles away, though. In fact, around 30% of identity theft happens between family members or friends!
So, all in all, be careful with your personal information. For example, don’t be like 21% of people who use online
passwords that are 10 years old, or 73% of people who have the same password for at least two different
accounts. Instead, have different passwords for different accounts and change them often.
11 Identity theft …
A is becoming more common.
B is the world’s most common crime.
C happens to one out of two people.
D has more victims than any other crime.
12 The reason why identity theft happens is that
we …
A trust people more.
B share more personal information online.
C spend too much time on the Internet.
D do not check our bank accounts regularly.
13 Catching identity thieves can be difficult
because …
A the police cannot control the Internet.
B identity theft is not a crime in some countries.
C it is difficult to prove that thieves are guilty.
D the police cannot always arrest people in
other countries.
14 Sometimes, identity thieves …
A are people you know.
B pretend to be people you know.
C are people you knew a long time ago.
D try to get information about people you know.
15 The majority of people use passwords which …
A are at least 10 years old.
B they chose when they were 10.
C work for at least two of their accounts.
D they have changed in the last year.
