Veganism And Omnivore
Lifestyles: Vegan and Omnivore
As different crazes and fads are appearing each day, we have come to expect them to simply fade
away as the hype passes. However, veganism has stood the test of time in our fad society and is still
increasing in popularity. Originally only thought to be a religious lifestyle, many people from
different walks of life are becoming vegans. However, this poses many questions and sparks heated
debates, mainly from omnivorous people who believe that veganism is against life's natural order.
Vegans, then, argue against an omnivorous lifestyle by bringing up facts about humans' biological
makeup and how humans are, contrary to popular belief, herbivorous by nature, not omnivorous.
While both sides present good arguments to some, the veganism lifestyle contains more benefits and
less harmful cons than an omnivorous lifestyle.
The first argument that is brought up about the two opposing lifestyles is the food that one is able to
consume and the health benefits that come from eating said lifestyles. In terms of an omnivore, one
is able to eat any and everything without restrictions; This includes meat, seafood, starchy and non–
starchy vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, and nuts. However, on average, omnivores do not
consume enough healthy fruits and vegetables, tending to consume mainly meats, dairy, and grains.
Meat, especially beef, is high in harmful cholesterol and fat, which is not good for the body. In
addition, this also means that, on

Animals Save The Environment
Animals play key roles in the environment. They help keep natural process running smoothly.
Insects help in pollinating diverse plants around the world. Scavengers clean up the carcasses of
dead animals everywhere. There are also many different animals that help the environment by
recycling various human and animal products. Carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores also keep
each other with in the proper population limit. Many of these animals are part of each other's food
supplies as well. Since all of these animals help one another and us, why would we not want to
protect them? Some people might say that protecting animals waste money. The government spends
thousands of dollars on preserving habitats for animals all across our nation. They would say this
money could be better put to use. The schools need better equipment, roads are in awful conditions,
and our government is already in enough debt that they should not be spending any more than
necessary. The animal's welfare should be one of the last concerns the government has. They argue
that the animals only take up space in the world. With the human population always increasing, this
is space we could use to house people. The bigger cities are over filled as they are. If we could have
some people move out of those cities and build new ones. They could move to the places where the
national habitats are and create new, cleaner cities there. There are many more arguments that
people may make to stop the animal

The Omnivore's Dilemma Sparknotes
In chapter eight of The Omnivore's Dilemma Michael Pollan has one main thesis. The omnivore's
dilemma is that we don't know what to eat because we can eat anything. The omnivore's dilemma
for young readers was published in 2015. And it was set to inform young readers about, well, food.
It talks about food rules and how foods are made and where they come from. But it also tells you
about the history of human omnivores.
As my thesis states we don't know what to eat because we can eat everything. That is a problem
because as he states on page 103 " Today the modern omnivore has almost no culture to fall back
on" Culture is important because it tells us what to eat. And it tells us what our ancestors ate.For lot
of other people like mexicans, they have always ate rice and beans. "For some animals there is no
dilemma at dinner"(101). For years the fisher cat has just ate meat and the crow has just eaten and
seeds and mice. Because that is all they need. But we have too many options to choose from, and we
don't need all of them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means we can eat about everything (except for poison). That also means we can eat things that
are said to be free range but are really not. Take Rosie for example " Rosie lives in a shed with
twenty thousand other Roises"(p148). Rosie is a chicken that is said to be free range but she lives in
a shed because the chicken farmers don't want them to get sick. But we will are also able to eat
others foods that look good like perfectly frosted cupcakes. "Or it might be like that food is fun to
eat"(p80) We should not be eating food just because it looks good or because it is fun to eat. We
should only be eating the foods that we were made to eat or the foods that are good for

The Ethics Of Eating Meat
Since the time of caveman to the modern day society, humans have always eaten meat as a part of
daily life, "As far back as it can be traced...Our ancestry is among the hunter/gatherers from the
beginning. Once domestication of food sources began, it included both animals and plants"
(McArdle). Although these modern times that we live in have created new substances and ways to
replace the natural way to eat meat, people will always have reason to go back to the original way to
get the basic nutrition of meat. Human beings should support the basic idea that eating meat is
ethical because human bodies were created to be omnivore, people have evolved to manipulate
animals in an intelligent manner, and there are several alternative and ethical ways of eating meat.
The traits that the human body consist of are meant for more natural foods to be ingested, which are
both both meats and vegetables, making humans omnivores. The teeth and digestive tract that
individuals were provided with are meant to break down animal and plant based foods to provide
nutrients to the rest of the body to keep it running (McArdle). People were meant to eat meat in the
first place, it cannot be considered "unethical," because it is a part of the natural way of life. For
example, when a lion hunts its prey to provide dinner for its cub and mate, it is not considered
unethical, it is a part of the lion's daily life. The lion going after the prey as a source of food is its
way of survival, and is not

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
Michael Pollan. New York: Penguin Group, 2006. 1–411 pp., (ISBN 978–0–14–303858–0).
As omnivorous beings, it seems that is both a blessing and a curse to have such a vast amount of
meal choices to choose from. In The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan explores the majority of
these options and offers a sort of guide on how to make a choice. The UC Berkeley Graduate School
journalism professor takes us on an eye–opening ride with this book where we find out horrifying
truths on the ingredients of the foods we eat every day and whether our choices benefit our bank
accounts more than they do our health and the earth.
The book is divided into three sections with each section focused on the major players in our diet in
terms of where they come from. The first section (consisting of the first seven chapters) would, of
course, focus the industrial food chain. The second emphasizes alternative foods, mainly organic
foods and the last section is based on hunter–gatherer foods. Each section ends with a meal that he
consumes and gives us his thoughts on such.
Pollan begins his journey of exploring the industrial food chain by taking a trip to the supermarket.
Reason being, most Americans, buy their food from such stores. During this trip, he finds what
seems to be a wide variety of choices. However, majority of these choices have one thing in
common: they have corn in them or

Introduction
Cats are among the earliest companions of men and have been kept as pets in several homesteads for
decades. The health of the cat is very important, and thus, the owner needs to make sure that the pet
is always in good vigor. Attainment of good heath transpires with the use of foods that have the right
ingredients needed by the cats. Mainly, a majority of the food that cats consume is a composition of
foodstuffs that their owners offer. However, some of the foodstuffs that individuals consume are not
recommended for the pet as they affect their health. Vegans and vegetarians are individuals, who do
not consume a number of animal products such as meat, milk, and in some instances, eggs.
Fundamentally, there is a wide range of vegan food that manufactures provide in the market for
various pets. It is vital that the individuals purchase vegan food manufactured by approved vendors
because a wrong choice in food leads to serious complications on the health of the

Vegan – (n) a person who does not eat or use animal products (a) using or containing no animal
products
Reasons to go vegan: the animals health environment
I want to go vegan because I find it disgusting knowing the what is on my plate was an animal. All
animal by–products contain cholesterol which is not good for you. When eating plant–based, you
can actually lower the risk of heart diseases, cancer, diabetes etc. Lastly, our environment is dying.
We use so much land to feed and house animals for us to eat. Cows and sheep cause around 37% of
the methane released into the air. The approximate amount of water used for 1 kilo. of beef is around
13,000 liters – 100,000 liters. Whereas the amount of water used to produce 1 kilo. Of wheat is ...

The top three include protein, calcium and iron. First is protein, it is basically impossible to be
protein deficient unless you are dying of starvation, where you would obviously lacking in all
vitamins. The protein from plant foods are actually healthier for you. When you look at meat as a
package deal, sure you get protein but you also get cholesterol, hormones and even antibiotics.
Whereas eating plants you don't just get protein you also get the rich vitamins, water and other
crucial nutrients. Next is calcium, being calcium deficient is difficult to have on a balanced vegan
diet. The calcium in dark green leafy vegetables is absorbed twice as well as the calcium in milk
with many other nutrients and the important vitamin K. The calcium from milk also comes with
saturated fats, lactose, cholesterol, antibiotics and pus.Lastly, iron, meat is known as the best and
biggest source of iron. It is actually proven that it is more beneficial for your body to receive it from
plants. The iron found in plants is non–heme iron which may be a good thing. Avoiding heme iron
may lower heart disease risk. Getting iron from plants also comes with all the other essential
nutrients. Many people are scared to go vegan because of the lack of iron but they are continuously
eating the foods linked to heart disease, cancer and strokes. The World Health Organization has

Persuasive Speech About Animal Cruelty
You want to know something horrify and heartbreaking? People say they love animals but that's
false. Something that animal lovers don't know is that 56 billion farmed animals are killed every
year by humans and 200 million animals are reported killed by hunters in the United States every
year. Treating animals for their fur and bones is not good for them and us. There meat can cause
cancer, using their belongings is depressing and there should be more compassionate for them. I see
animals as humans because they can feel happiness, sadness, anger and lastly pain. Animals can't
fight for their body but in this generation many vegetarians and vegans are against animal cruelty. In

They inject all of those chemicals to make the chicken bigger but that's hurting us and all the little
kids out there for their future. It may cause heart diseases and at a point when we have to take so
many pills to get better. On Netflix there's a documentary that came out this year called 'What the
Health'. He also talks about meat causes cancer. He interviewed three people who were sick with
cancer and they all went to many doctors to get better but they just receive pills to take and hope for
their best. The guy in the video tells them to stop taking the pills, stop eating process meat, try to
exercise and he'll come back in two weeks to see how they are. When that day came those three
people he interviewed looked so much healthier and had so much energy. Not eating meat may
cause a different in us and a longer life because we are hurting animals by killing them but really
they are killing us. When it comes to shopping, I am a very picky person. It can be with makeup,
shoes, clothes and furniture. One main problem when it comes to being picky is that I make sure it's
not made by animal's fur. That animal fur somebody may be wearing on their body once loved
nature and they had no idea there life was going too soon. I know many girls don't care when it
comes to makeup because makeup is also a girl's best friend but what gets me uncomfortable is the

Feral hogs can get many different infectious and parasitic diseases. As you know feral hogs are
omnivores and rooting and wallowing is they're number one way to destroy crops .This usually
happens when it's planting time or when the plants are nearly finished growing. Hogs mostly prey
on young livestock such as calves, lambs, fawns, and ground nesting birds and sometimes even kids
when the hog has an opportunity. Feral hogs have been known to carry diseases to humans and
livestock. Swine brucellosis can cause loss of production and profit of domestic swine operations.
And is also transmitted to other hogs .Feral hogs hide several parasites that might affect humans or
other animal such as Fleas, hog lice and ticks are the most common. Hogs also have internal
parasites which can be adapted in feral hogs and may include round worms that are why it's very
important to wash your hands, cook the meat thoroughly, and wear gloves before and after handling
the meat. A law was made stating within 15days of bringing feral hogs over in Oklahoma animals
that tested positive were sent to the slaughter house no exceptions. Because it was so easy the hogs

Coyote Omnivore
The Coyote, part of the biological family of canidae, look appears in between a wolf and fox, and is
an opportunistic omnivore predator and scavenger that it's native in North America. Coyote are
highly adaptable species, even when it moves into human occupied territory. They adjust their
hunting techniques to whatever prey they laid its eye onto. For hunting smaller prey alone, they
usually stalk behind the prey and pounce onto them; for bigger prey such as deer, they hunt in small
packs and take down the prey as one. Because of their ability of adapting most habitats, like deserts,
plains, and grasslands, they can spread their habitat range all across the continent, even in large
cities in urban area (Baker & Bonine 2015). Originating in the west of North America, the coyote
spread eastward into Ontario, and continue move forwards to Quebec and other eastern provinces
(Dumancic & Caverley, 2014). In recent decades, coyote had expanded its range and habitat though

The Effects Of Coral Reef Ecosystem On Coral Reefs...
The present study consistent with previous finding by Casey et al. (2016) and Jennings et al. (1995)
regarding bottom up processes in coral reef ecosystem. Also show a profound contrast to widely
accepted top–down processes in coral reef ecosystem, indicated by weak relationship on prey–
predator interaction and strong positive relationship between hard coral cover and fish biomass.
Despite there are more studies confirm cascading effect in coral reefs such as indirect effect on
mesopredator and herbivore density( (Friedlandler and DeMartini 2002; Ruppert et al. 2013; Ritchie
and Johnson 2009), algal cover sponge cover (Rasher et al 2013; Loh et al. 2015) resulting decline
in coral cover and juvenile coral (Rasher et al 2013; Casey et al 2015). However, most of those
research were conducted in region where confounding factors persists such as fishing pressure
across many trophic levels (predator, herbivore, planktivore), pollution, and terrestrial run–off.
Eventhough some research were conducted in the nearly pristine area, such as Dulvy (2004) in Lau
Island Fiji with human population densities ranging between two and 42 people km–2. However,
this area may not be pristine in a historical context and non exclusive predator fishing still occurs.
Hence, recent unambiguous empirical evidence of trophical cascade in coral reef ecosystem with the
absent of confounding factors was scarce (Ferretti et al 2010).

The Common Raccoon ( P. Lotor
The common raccoon (P. lotor) has been said to be one of the most widespread urban mammalian
carnivores. Characterised by its fox–like face, bushy striped tail, and unmistakable "mask" of dark
patches around their eyes, the growing population of urban raccoons has become somewhat of an
epidemic. These small creatures are known for their relatively high intellect, enabling them to access
human resources. Raccoons are omnivores, and have been consistently observed to eat virtually
anything. Additionally, even though raccoons are technically both primary consumers and secondary
consumers, they are best described as being scavengers. Raccoons have very little social structure
relatively; they are known as solitary animals, most likely stemming from their nocturnal behaviors.
Quite often, they will be found traveling as either a family (until the young reach adolescence, at
which time they leave), or an individual. They are notorious carriers of disease, can outcompete
native species, and can be quite aggressive when confronted by humans. For these reasons and
more, the urban raccoon is considered a pest, and in many areas there have been countless efforts to
control their populations (Gehrt, S. D., et. al., 2010, Pg. 35–47). This paper will propose actions that
would need to be taken in order to deter raccoons from pursuing human waste as a food source in
the effort of controlling their population.
Due to the raccoon's opportunistic nature, overtime the species have found

Animal Cruelty In Factory Farming
The American diet boils down to three distinct options, each differentiated by the type of meat they
eat, omnivores, selective omnivores, and vegetarians or vegans. Omnivores are people who eat
whatever they so choose, the big distinction between omnivores and the other two dietary options is
the fact that regular omnivores will eat factory farmed meat. Vegetarians or vegans and selective
omnivores choose to either not eat meat, or to eat humanely grown meat. A major reason why these
groups make that choice is because they know what factory farming is, and they know what happens
within these farms. Animal cruelty in factory farming is probably the largest reason why these
groups make that choice. And while making any dietary choice other than being a normal omnivore
and eating factory farmed animals is a wise choice, being a vegetarian or vegan is simply not
realistic in some cases, it is too extreme. The perfect middle ground for the American diet between
the two extremes, eating factory farmed meat and not eating meat at all is to become a selective
omnivore and eat only humanely grown meat. Animal cruelty within factory farms is a very real
thing. The concept of animal cruelty is one that has many different interpretations. People have an
array of perceptions from simply treating animals poorly to animal abuse in general. In reality
animal cruelty is every possible malpractice in taking care of animals such as living conditions, the
way animals are treated, and the food

Eating Meat: Biological Necessity, or Choice? The first article I chose to use for my research paper,
is from the scientific journal American Scientist, called "Meat–Eating Among the Earliest Humans,"
written by Briana Pobiner who is a paleoanthropologist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of
Natural History. In this article, Pobiner discusses the biological evolution of humans, how human
meat consumption evolved over time to facilitate the growth of human brain size to become the
intelligent and sentient beings we are today, and whether or not we still need to eat meat as our
ancestors did. Pobiner references many other scientists' observations and discoveries. For example,
she uses the observations of a Mister Sherwood Washburn from the University of California at
Berkeley to expound upon how early findings of human meat consumptions may have been wrong.

Analysis of "A Savage Life" Essay
Through the use of anecdotes in the article "A Savage Life", Suzanne Winckler effectively points
out that it is important to understand where your food comes from. Winckler helps convey to readers
that while butchering animals is no fun, it is necessary for the survival of omnivores. She argues that
meat–eaters are out of touch with reality; instead of recognizing that an animal must be sacrificed
for their meal, most consumers mindlessly devour the food on their plates – without a thought of
where their food came from. Winckler states "I am too far gone in my rational Western head to
appropriate the ritual of cultures for whom the bloody business of hunting was a matter of survival"
(634); in this statement she adequately appeals to logos ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through this proclamation, Winckler successfully appeals to pathos because she makes it simple for
the audience to see the connection between a newborn and a chicken about to lose its life. Both
chickens and newborns are ignorant to the world and rather helpless – comparing a human to the
food that one eats helps to put the killing of a chicken into perspective. Winckler then gruesomely
explains what it is like to behead a chicken; appealing to both pathos and ethos: "Headless chickens
don't run around. They thrash with such force and seeming coordination that they sometimes turn
back flips" (633). By using imagery to describe this horrific requirement for killing a chicken,
Winckler is seen as a credible and factual source. After slaying her first chicken, Winckler "realized
why cultures, ancient and contemporary, develop elaborate rituals for coping with the grisly
experience of killing any sentient creature" (633). She appeals to logos in this quote by informing
readers of the epiphany she came to – taking them through her mind's thought process; this makes
her come across as a logical being, not a demented human. By appealing to logos in this quote,
Winckler invokes thought in readers' minds; she productively addresses that killing animals is
disturbing and off–putting but necessary for survival, since most nations perform rituals

Vegetarianism and Meat Eating in Food Culture Essay
Christopher McCandless, a young American who was found dead in summer of 1992 in wild land in
Alaska, wrote in his diary about his moral struggle regarding killing a moose for survival. According
to Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild, Chris had to abandon most of the meat since he lacked the
knowledge of how to dismantle and preserve it (166–168). Not only did he have a moral dilemma to
kill a moose, but also had a deep regret that a life he had taken was wasted because of his own fault.
He then started recognizing what he ate as a precious gift from the nature and called it "Holy Food"
(Krakauer 168). Exploring relationships between human beings and other animals arouses many
difficult questions: Which animals are humans allowed to eat and ... Show more content on

For human, to master agriculture and trade about 10,000 years ago widely expanded their food
options that enable modern human to become a vegetarian (Corliss). A vegetarian does not eat meat
not only because it tastes bad, but also it means something to him or her. The more one has faith in
vegetarianism, the more one restricts one's food choice in reality. Henry David Thoreau, who is
known as one of the first environmental writers of the 20th century in the U.S. and had lived in
woods alone, writes in his essay Walden that hunting and eating animals had bothered him because
it seemed as it degraded himself to a beast. For him, eating animals is "not agreeable to [his]
imagination" (Thoreau 169) as Thoreau strongly believed that "to leave off eating animals" is "a part
of the destiny of the human race" (Thoreau 170). While his belief and the reality he faced had
conflicted each other, he tried his best to find a way to live without relying much on meat. Even in a
wild, what drove Thoreau was anthropocentric thinking that human can control nature. This
dilemma in food choice that bothered Thoreau is what Michael Pollan calls the omnivore's dilemma.
He puts it in his same–titled book in this way: "When you can eat just about anything nature has to

The cows would roam freely on the hillside and chickens look for food around the red, wooden
barn. If you step back into the present you may realize that most farms today are very different than
that of the past or what we would see in a painting. According to the EPA (Environmental Protection
Agency) there are more than 20,000 factory farms nationwide. This is a 30 percent increase from
2003. These farms are industrial–scale facilities where animals are treated as a product rather than a
living creature. Thousands of animals are kept in these factories resulting in disease and
contamination. In the widely acclaimed documentary Food Inc., directed by Robert Kenner, Carole
Morison declared that "This isn't farming. This is just mass production like an assembly line in a
factory." In fact there are so many animals that workers cannot even process the 1.3 billion tons of
waste that is produced annually. To solve this problem, waste is piled into large open pools and
sprayed onto the land resulting in health problems for not only the workers but the people who live
nearby. Rivers, streams and groundwater may also get polluted from this process.

The Omnivore's Dilemma By Michael Pollan
In the introduction of Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals,
he reveals that his goal is to expose both scientific and person aspects surrounding the question that
has come to plague America: "what should we have for dinner?"(1) This dilemma ,in addition to
industrialism, has caused a national eating disorder in America. Through the exploration of the
industrial, organic, and hunter–gatherer chains, Pollan's desire is that his readers gain a deeper
understanding behind the reason for America's national eating disorder and our uncanny relationship
with food. In expressing his goal in writing, Pollan greatly relies on ethos in the introduction to

He writes, "What I try to do in this book is approach the dinner question as a naturalist might, using
the long lenses of ecology and anthropology, as well as the shorter, more intimate lens of personal

that he is trying to do this rather than condescendingly insisting that he is "right". He also shows that
he considers different angles when looking at this issue. By doing this, Pollan offers technical and
factual explanations for the national eating disorder. He presents the argument that as omnivores, we
logically are given the challenge of many choices are to what to eat. But, he does not stop at just the
scientific example. He offers his own experiences in order to approach the situation from another
direction. This shows the he is directly involved with the dilemma. He writes, "I hoped to shed fresh
light on the way we eat now by immersing myself in the way we ate then" (8). He is taking personal

Persuasive Essay : Should Humans Kill And Eating Animals?
To kill or not to kill ,that's the question. Are we, humans, justified in killing and eating animals?
Natural born carnivores such as lions and tigers don't have the choice of whether or not they want to
eat meat or plants as we do. So why is it that we eat meat? The controversy on eating meat has been
around for almost as long as humans have been. While some may argue that it is unethical to eat
meat, it has been proven to have a better impact on the environment compared to plant based diets.
There are disadvantages and advantages of eating meat and of eating plant. Although meat is good
for the body, it affects the environment both positively and negatively, the same goes for eating non–
meat products. Many people believe that humans feel satisfied when eating meat, while animals eat
meat for survival. However, researchers have proven that meat contains the necessary nutrients and
proteins that are hard to find anywhere else.
Many animals kill and eat each other, so why is it unfair for humans to eat meat? One of the
differences between us and those animals is the fact that they were born carnivores. Lions and tigers
on a daily basis hunt down other animals for survival. The article "Animals Eat Other Animals, So
Why Shouldn't We?" by Free From Harm Staff Writers, states that we, humans, kill animals for
pleasure, and not for survival. Meat, however contains vitamins, protein, nutrients, and all the
essential amino acids for humans. Meat helps strengthens bones, and has

The Ethics Of Eating Meat Essay
The Ethics of Eating Meat We are a nation of meat eaters. We are socialized from a young age to
consume high levels of animal products. This deeply ingrained meat–eating tradition is a big part of
the American standard diet. A visit to the local grocery store shows that there is no shortage of
animal products. Isle by isle you see a plethora of meats, neatly packed and ready to be cooked,
dairy products neatly shelved, and even candies that contain animal by–products. This is an
omnivore's utopia, allowing for a lifestyle that involves the overconsumption of meats and animal
by–products. The rampant meat industry has managed to condition people to disassociate the meats
in our grocery markets and the animals from which they came. Most people have become unaware
omnivores, consuming whatever meats are available to them. This shift of moral degradation is
evident in how we process and consume our meats. We have become a selfish society that values our
own convenience and affordability of meat rather than the consideration of the animal. This begs the
question, is eating meat inherently wrong and should we forbid meat consumption under any and all
circumstances? To fully address this issue, we must first define the moral status of animals. So, are
animals equal to humans in worth and value and should they receive similar treatment? In our
country, the scarcity of food is not an issue of underdeveloped methods of agriculture, it is an issue
of poverty. We have an abundance of

Vegetarian Pros And Cons

Today, there are a numerous number of adults who are finding a dramatic increase in their health
problems. Over half of world population is carnivorous, that's almost 4 billion humans eating meat
on a daily base. Even though cruelty to an animal is live on air. People still seem heartless and does
not care about millions of livestock being slaughtered daily. There is a tremendous amount of
benefits and advantages of becoming vegetarian such as reduce the risk of cancer, heart decreases,
and low cholesterol level. Over the time scientist has scientifically proven that Eating meat is not a
healthy option because it increases the risk of various cancers, high blood pressure and can lead to
increase in heart attacks. Many people want to be vegetarian because, they want to stay healthy,
does not want to see cruelty to animals and because of their religion. Due to overconsumption of
meat in the United States, millions of innocent animals spend their lives being bred to either get fat
and be killed for human benefits. Furthermore, since their birth, innocent livestock are forced to
spend their entire life in a stall to produce milk and chickens in cages with hundreds of other poultry
to lay eggs their whole life in a confined cage. Not only that commercial farmers also use various
kinds of viruses to feed their animals to meet their customer demand. One might argue that if we
stop consuming meat product, there would be millions of people

The Omnivore's Dilemma By Michael Pollan
What does the title, The Omnivore's Dilemma exactly mean? Human beings are omnivores.
Omnivore comes from the Latin words omne meaning all or everything and vorare meaning to eat or
devour. The author Michael Pollan wrote this book to inform the readers that the food choice they
make have major consequences. There are two main reasons why the food in the United States is
unhealthy.
An unhealthy decision in our modern diet is that human beings are eating too many corn products.
Farmers started feeding animals corn and it has a negative impact in todays society. Animals such as
cows and goats can make a meal out of grass and that allows the animal, especially the cows, to get
protein and carbohydrate but unfortunately, cows are being forced

Omnivore Cycle
The food chain is what animals eat and the cycle of what eats what. And the food cycle is in the
carnivore starts at the toad eats the beetles and worms. Then the bobcat eats the elk, roe, deer. Then
the short–eared owl eats rodents. But the wolf comes in and eats the przewalski's, horses, elk, moose.
Then to the lynx which also eats roe, deer, rodents, and birds. Next is the omnivore cycle it starts at
the stag beetles and they eat leaves, fruit, flower, and smaller bugs, and dying wood. After 30 years
animals are slowly returning to the Chernobyl site, to their original habitats. There are numbers of
moose, roe, deer, red–tailed, deer, and wild boar living in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. There are

Who's To Blame For Omnivore?
As the planet grows so does our appetite, feeding this massive planet we live on requires more than
millions but 50 billion farm animals to be slaughtered every year. Although, there is this
phenomenon where our society may love animals yet participate in a diet that demands them to also
be killed. Our dietary choices can also be viewed as a characteristic. Vegetarians avoid the entire
conflict by not consuming animal products entirely. On the other hand, many researchers have found
that the omnivore category of the world view themselves as being more dominate and masculine due
to their choice of cuisine. Another category is by culture or community, some populations
unconsciously make their decisions by following the lead of the rest of

How do Raccoons Adapt?
The ecosystem consists of communities with different populations of species. Each diverse animal
in the ecosystem has a unique way of surviving the abiotic and biotic factors in the environment
through its traits; behavioral traits, morphological traits and physiological traits. Some of its traits
prevent these organisms from predation, and others allows organism to survive when temperature
are too high or too low. The strategy to survival depends on the animal. Let's talk about the Procyon
lotor also known by the name raccoon (Source 2). Raccoon are nocturnal; which means they sleep in
the day and are awake at night. They are also omnivore, which means plants and animals. Some
plants they consume are berries, leaves and fruits, and they prey on insects, frogs and crayfish.
Raccoons are found in forests, mashes prairies and in cities. These masked bandits are live many
place; in a hole in a tree, in a log, and in a house attic. Their predators are cougars, bobcats and
coyotes ( Source 2). These characteristics of the raccoons and some of these basic necessities decide
whether an animal survives or not. The environment the raccoon is present decides its adaptation.
When the weather changes, an animal has to adapt to its environment. When autumn is about to end,
raccoons eat most of their food in the spring so that they have enough fat and body heat to stay
warm for the winter. In the winter, raccoons also hibernate so they do not use up all their energy and

What Is The False Sense Of Pigs In The Pigs?
On a beautiful Saturday morning on a Kansas farm, which smelled strongly of manure and hay there
was a massive commotion. What was the cause of the commotion you may ask, it was feeding time,
the day where all the farm animals got fed corn and vegetables and occasionally decent people food
such as pudding and Peter the pig's favorite bread.Peter was a pig, he was a very bright pig too,all
the farm animals thought pigs were greedy, foul smelling and easily manipulated, but of course it was
not true.Even though pigs are not as horrendous as the farm animals suspect, the farm animals still
think pigs are inferior, for the fact that long ago pigs were the most unfavorable farm animal they did
horrendous things, for example, stealing, going to the bathroom on the floor not in buckets and
being inconsiderate to the other animals needs and feelings.Due to their misjudgment of pigs
thinking they have not changed, pigs are oppressed by the other farm animals due to the farm
animal's false sense of superiority.
Peter the pig was devouring his food and then all of a sudden he needed to go to the bathroom. When
Peter came back he discovered that someone or something had stolen a fragment of his meal and the
only clue was white feathers."Outrageous!"hollered Peter, "Who would do such a thing?" and at that
moment Drumstick who was a chicken jumped out of a tree "I can't help to overhear but it seems

Omnivore's Dilemma Research Paper
But the real question is, now that we've read it, will we make better, healthier, food choices? The
Omnivore's Dilemma is a very interesting, informative book. In the following paragraphs I will
explain how pure evidence alone won't make much of a difference for most people. I will write
about how family and media can influence your food choices, our society today and how people
might think I'm wrong.
The people we spend time around have a big impact on what we eat. Take family, for example, your
parents usually decide what to eat. If your parents read something about what's healthy, then you
might be eating that for dinner next week. "I didn't write The Omnivore's Dilemma to convince you
to eat one kind of food or another." Michael Pollan says in The Omnivore's Dilemma. Most food
literature persuades a person to eat a certain way; whether it's vegetarian or omnivore, whether a diet
of mostly grains is good of if starch is bad. My mom read Dr. David Ludwig's book Always
Hungry? and was influenced that fats aren't what makes people fat. His thesis is that it's not about
how much you eat, it's about what you eat, and Americans need to eat more fat and less sugar. My
mom has been persuaded by this book and we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

a bad diet.", yet Americans keep eating outrageous amounts of salty and sugary food. If proof was

Vegetarian Vs Omnivore
Whether it be because of religion, culture, or personal choice, millions of people worldwide do not
eat meat, and the majority of the population, the omnivores, often ridicule these people, the
vegetarians, for their choices. This has sadly created a divide between thousands of people, however
the cause of this separation is simple. One side, whether it be the omnivores or the vegetarians, feels
the need to impose its choices onto the other side. Both sides are at fault here, as the omnivores tell
the vegetarians that they cannot get proper nutrients from a plant–based diet, and the vegetarians try
to tell the omnivores that they are torturing animals by killing them for food. The omnivores are
wrong because, while it does require careful planning, vegetarians can easily get the nutrients they
need, and the vegetarians are hypocritical because, as the article will show, farming kills thousands
of creatures. The author of Even Small–Scale Vegetable Farming Requires Hunting Animals, Tovar
Cerulli, is a vegan writer and speaker. He begins the article by telling a story about how he found
cucumber beetles on his squash plants, and rather than using a pesticide on the plants, he went into
his garden before work and squished the bugs he could find. He also talks about the effects of

supported with personal experience, and those that aren't are supported can be easily verified or are

Paganism Vs Vegetarianism
Imagine if the apocalypse happened and the only viable food was the family dog, would it be
immoral to eat the dog to survive? What if instead of a dog, it was the family's pig? The majority of
American people would believe it's more morally justified to eat the pig than the dog which reduces
the pig to a mere piece of bacon. The United States is a profit–driven country which is reflected by
their mistreatment of farm animals and can be seen by its' peoples anthropocentric and hypocritical
views.
The Animal Welfare Act is the only Federal law that manages animal treatment in the means of
transport, research, and by dealers (USDA). Although this law conveys the impression that all
animals will have a basic standard of treatment, this isn't the ... Show more content on

This comes to show that the support for veganism and vegetarianism is an ecological, ethical, or
health concern issue, "Nearly all plant eaters have fermenting vats (enlarged chambers where foods
sits and microbes attack it). Ruminants like cattle and deer have forward sacs derived from
remodeled esophagus and stomach. Horses, rhinos, and colobine monkeys have posterior, hindgut
sacs. Humans have no such specializations.. The short canines in humans are a functional
consequence of the enlarged cranium and associated reduction of the size of the jaws. In
archeological sites, broken human molars are most often confused with broken premolars and
molars of pigs, a classic omnivore" (VRG). Although there is evidence to back up humans being
omnivores, is it morally justified for humans to eat meat when survival is not a threat? If one's
morals say no, there's many diets that exist that don't include animals. A vegan diet consists of not
consuming any animal products. Humans choose this diet for many reasons, but one of the main
reasons is to cut down on animal cruelty. Jonathan Safran Foer talks about the morality of harming
animals for food in his book Eating Animals, "What our babysitter said made sense to me, not only
because it seemed true, but because it was the extension to food of everything my parents had taught
me. We don't hurt family members. We don't hurt friends or strangers. We don't even hurt
upholstered furniture. My not having thought to include animals in that list didn't make them the
exceptions to it. It just made me a child, ignorant of the world's workings" (Foer). This portrays how
humans have a hierarchy of what is acceptable and what is not. One's treatment of animals comes
from this cultural hierarchy. In different cultures, the hierarchy will shift, for example, within parts
of the Jewish religion and culture

A Brief Look at Zebras
Herbivores
My example–Zebra
Food eaten
Zebras eat mainly grass but also shrubs, twigs, bark and leaves.
Dental formula and total dentition Their dental formula is: Incisors 3/3, Canines 1/1, Premolars 3–
4/3, Molars 3/3. Zebras have around 36–42 teeth but can have a maximum of 44 teeth.
Teeth shape and size
Their teeth are high–crowned and have complicated, smooth grinding surfaces. Canines are usually
only found in males and if found they are small and spade–shaped. They have sharp front teeth to
bite tough ends of grasses and have flat molars to grind their food.
Length and complexity of digestive system
Zebras have a very strong but simple digestive system. It takes a while for zebras to absorb nutrients
so that is why they eat for most of the day. It takes up to 12 hours for full digestion to take place in a
zebra. Their digestive systems also contain a lot of microbes so that they are able to break down
their food as it is all plant matter and the microbes help to break down cell walls. Their digestive
systems are made to digest food that is rich in cellulose. pH of stomach
Zebras have a pH of 6–7 but their stomachs are very acidic with a pH of 1–2. Their stomachs are
more acidic because they have to break down the food a lot and need higher levels of acidity to do
so.
Feeding habits
A zebra eats constantly throughout the day and can eat an average of 9 kg of food a day. They eat for
roughly 22–24 hours a day. They eat for most of the day so that it helps maintain

Omnivores Research Paper
Humans are omnivores, meaning we eat a variety of foods, including meat and plant matter. A quick
glance at your own teeth will give you a sense of the variety of shapes and sizes of teeth an
omnivore can have. Human teeth are not indicative of exactly what you will see in the mouth of all
omnivores. Each omnivore will have teeth that are specifically adapted to the diet these animals
consume. Animals with teeth like humans that use their molars for grinding and their incisors and
canines for ripping or tearing are said to have heterodont dentition. Each tooth is designed for a
specific role in processing the food eaten. Homodont dentition, found in most omnivorous reptiles,
occurs when the teeth are all relatively the same size and shape.

Justifying Murder
Justifying Murder I see the others at the table. Their pupils growing as they see the server bring the
food toward the table; hungry for the pleasure that they lust for. Tapping feet. Watering mouths. The
plates slam down on the table, the grease splatters near me giving off the scent of burnt iron. The
texture is dark. The blood drips from the knife, used to butcher. The others dig in, sloppily getting
the juices on their faces, the sheen of sauce on their lips shining in the reflection of my eyes. I hear
the slurping coming from the others mouths, it makes me cringe. Chomping, munching, chewing.
The grinding of teeth. The gulps. The satisfied burps. This bloody object, worshipped almost like a
God. Repulsive. That was an animal once; now it is simply nothing more than a product, something
put on the shelves of the super market. The consumption of meat. My distaste of meat started when I
was in middle school, the time in which I was realizing the reality of things around me. This lead to
the discovery of where meat actually comes from. Children don't necessarily question the food they
are eating, or where it derives from– they just happily devour anything placed in front of them,
oblivious of its source. But when one starts to mature and understand how and why things happen,
those children will start to see the world from a more realistic point of view. As I went through this
process, I discovered a few realities along the way; one of which was that meat comes from

Animal Ethics And Animal Farming
Not only does killing and torturing animals for the consumption of their meat and products harm the
animal but it harms humans and our planet as well. It is common to find people who are omnivores
in our country and rare to find a vegan. The vegan lifestyle is the only way that we can save this
planet. Usually, if you are eating dinner and someone mentions the animal that you are eating, when
it was living, another person at the table freaks out because they do not want to think of that. We
disassociate ourselves with the actual living animal that has suffered huge amounts on our plates
because we see ourselves as animal lovers who are against inhumane torture and killing of animals.
You can not classify yourself as an animal lover if you consume an animal or their product because
you are still supporting their demise. Why? Because the taste pleases us. That is all. We are
disgusted by people who torture and hurt animals for pleasure. For example, people disassociate
themselves from the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team due to the actions of the player Michael Vick.
Vick ran a dog fighting ring and bet on dogs to kill one another. Why? For no other reason than the
fact that it pleased him. We say that we are animal lovers and agree that animals have at least some
moral value but how does this make killing and torturing animals for our consumption okay?
Animal agriculture and factory farming are huge industries that are sort of swept under the rug by
omnivores. These

Omnivore Vs Vegetarianism
Intro:
According to Albert Einstein, "It is my view that the vegetarian manner of living... would most
beneficially influence the lot of mankind." The debate over whether or not it is healthier to be a
vegetarian or an omnivore has been a controversy for decades. Omnivores argue that vegetarians
don't consume enough protein and need meat to maintain a healthy regimen. Vegetarians disagree
and call attention to the risk of diseases while consuming meat in addition to the harmful effects of
what eating animals do to our planet. Einstein's quote perfectly expresses the concept that being
vegetarian is more beneficial to mankind. A vegetarian lifestyle is not only constructively for the
human body, but it is what will protect and preserve our fascinating planet.

express the positive and negative effects of each lifestyle. This is an informative article based on
true facts that display both sides of the vegetarian vs. omnivore debate. Humans will argue that
maintaining an omnivore diet is healthier for mankind. In this article the authors say, "a vegetarian
diet is shown to have a lesser risk of certain diseases." This quote proves that by statistics a
vegetarian diet is better for your health and will decrease the chances of obtaining certain diseases.
Omnivore diets lead to heart disease, lower blood cholesterol levels... as well as lower overall
cancer rates. I disagree with the statement that an omnivore diet is healthier than a vegetarian diet
because, as recent research has shown, one not consuming animal products has a greater possibility
of living longer

Omnivore's Dilemma Essay

Book Review In Michael Pollan's book "The Omnivore's Dilemma" he examines the main question
"What should we have for dinner?" (Page 1) He also examines the true meaning of food in today's
society. When we have just about any type of food available at our fingertips, it tends to cause a
dilemma, an omnivore's dilemma. We tend to make poor decisions due to the fact that we have so
many choices. To answer the question "What should we have for dinner?" Pollan decides that he
needs to know where food comes from. Through his journey Pollan discovers many problems with
how food is produced such as, food preservation techniques, and sanitary transportation. In the

He likes to eat junk food and McDonald's just as much as the rest of us. He is telling the story of the
Omnivore's Dilemma from his own point of view because, just like the rest of us, he is an omnivore.
He is explaining our epic food dilemma so the readers can understand and relate to his predicament.
He does a good job of using real world examples, like a meal from McDonald's, to help the readers
see the problem, which is that we have absolutely no clue where our food comes from, let alone
what products make up our food.
Michael Pollan argument in the Omnivore's Dilemma is very convincing because he has volunteered
countless hours of his own time to find out where food comes from, and what exactly the food is
made from. He visits many different farms, and actually learns how food begins its journey to his
dinner plate by being "curious to learn whom, and what [he'd] find at the far end of the food chain
that keeps [him] alive." (Page 33) By meeting with and talking to the owner of one of Iowa's most
productive farms, Pollan learns all of the ins and outs of farming, consequently learning the
beginnings of his dinner. He even purchased his own cow, steer 534, to track exactly where his food
was going and how it was being processed. "[He] wanted to follow one of [the] steers through the
life cycle." (Page 72) By purchasing his own steer, we see how committed Pollan is to this project,
and finding out exactly where our dinner

"Vegans Report Less Stress and Anxiety than Omnivores." The authors report a study carried out to
investigate the mood and factors that influence mood of Vegans, Vegetarians, and Omnivores. A
total of 620 adults' mood, diet, and lifestyle factors were surveyed in an online sample. The number
of Vegans were 283, vegetarians were 109, omnivores were 228 and 78.5 percent of the volunteers
were women. The authors record that vegetarian males and vegan males were found to have lower
anxiety scores than omnivore males. Lower anxiety and lower stress were found to be related to a
vegan diet and lower intake of sweets. The authors assert that a strict plant based diet may not have
a negative impact on mood, rather reducing animal based diets may promote mood improvement.
They conclude by saying that eating more of plant based diets with lower intake of animal products
might be associated with better mental health. According to this research, it is obvious that

The Omnivore's Dilemma By Michael Pollan Food Culture
In 2009 food detective Michael Pollan published an eye–opening book called The Omnivore's
Dilemma. According to Pollan, we don't know what to eat because unlike other cultures around the
world, Americans lack a stable food culture. Food cultures are traditions that are passed down from
generation to generation to teach us how to cook and eat food. These cultures can help you stay
healthy and more importantly, enjoy your food.
In chapter 8 of the Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan explains how other cultures like the French
have traditions that have been passed down for generations. For instance, in chapter 8 Michael
Pollan says that " You'll never see a French person eating while driving or walking down the street.
They seldom eat alone. Instead, they eat with family or friends, and their meals are long leisurely
affairs. In other words, the French culture of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

about how food companies and the industrial food industry tend to modify their products to seem

also modify the food so that it says reduced fat, or gluten–free. But in reality, they are taking out
vital nutrients and other things that we depend on to survive. Pollan tells us at the beginning of
chapter 8 that " Today the modern omnivore has almost no culture to fall back on. Standing in our

Veganism And Omnivore

  • 1. Veganism And Omnivore Lifestyles: Vegan and Omnivore As different crazes and fads are appearing each day, we have come to expect them to simply fade away as the hype passes. However, veganism has stood the test of time in our fad society and is still increasing in popularity. Originally only thought to be a religious lifestyle, many people from different walks of life are becoming vegans. However, this poses many questions and sparks heated debates, mainly from omnivorous people who believe that veganism is against life's natural order. Vegans, then, argue against an omnivorous lifestyle by bringing up facts about humans' biological makeup and how humans are, contrary to popular belief, herbivorous by nature, not omnivorous. While both sides present good arguments to some, the veganism lifestyle contains more benefits and less harmful cons than an omnivorous lifestyle. The first argument that is brought up about the two opposing lifestyles is the food that one is able to consume and the health benefits that come from eating said lifestyles. In terms of an omnivore, one is able to eat any and everything without restrictions; This includes meat, seafood, starchy and non– starchy vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, and nuts. However, on average, omnivores do not consume enough healthy fruits and vegetables, tending to consume mainly meats, dairy, and grains. Meat, especially beef, is high in harmful cholesterol and fat, which is not good for the body. In addition, this also means that, on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Animals Save The Environment Animals play key roles in the environment. They help keep natural process running smoothly. Insects help in pollinating diverse plants around the world. Scavengers clean up the carcasses of dead animals everywhere. There are also many different animals that help the environment by recycling various human and animal products. Carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores also keep each other with in the proper population limit. Many of these animals are part of each other's food supplies as well. Since all of these animals help one another and us, why would we not want to protect them? Some people might say that protecting animals waste money. The government spends thousands of dollars on preserving habitats for animals all across our nation. They would say this money could be better put to use. The schools need better equipment, roads are in awful conditions, and our government is already in enough debt that they should not be spending any more than necessary. The animal's welfare should be one of the last concerns the government has. They argue that the animals only take up space in the world. With the human population always increasing, this is space we could use to house people. The bigger cities are over filled as they are. If we could have some people move out of those cities and build new ones. They could move to the places where the national habitats are and create new, cleaner cities there. There are many more arguments that people may make to stop the animal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Omnivore's Dilemma Sparknotes In chapter eight of The Omnivore's Dilemma Michael Pollan has one main thesis. The omnivore's dilemma is that we don't know what to eat because we can eat anything. The omnivore's dilemma for young readers was published in 2015. And it was set to inform young readers about, well, food. It talks about food rules and how foods are made and where they come from. But it also tells you about the history of human omnivores. As my thesis states we don't know what to eat because we can eat everything. That is a problem because as he states on page 103 " Today the modern omnivore has almost no culture to fall back on" Culture is important because it tells us what to eat. And it tells us what our ancestors ate.For lot of other people like mexicans, they have always ate rice and beans. "For some animals there is no dilemma at dinner"(101). For years the fisher cat has just ate meat and the crow has just eaten and seeds and mice. Because that is all they need. But we have too many options to choose from, and we don't need all of them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This means we can eat about everything (except for poison). That also means we can eat things that are said to be free range but are really not. Take Rosie for example " Rosie lives in a shed with twenty thousand other Roises"(p148). Rosie is a chicken that is said to be free range but she lives in a shed because the chicken farmers don't want them to get sick. But we will are also able to eat others foods that look good like perfectly frosted cupcakes. "Or it might be like that food is fun to eat"(p80) We should not be eating food just because it looks good or because it is fun to eat. We should only be eating the foods that we were made to eat or the foods that are good for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Ethics Of Eating Meat Since the time of caveman to the modern day society, humans have always eaten meat as a part of daily life, "As far back as it can be traced...Our ancestry is among the hunter/gatherers from the beginning. Once domestication of food sources began, it included both animals and plants" (McArdle). Although these modern times that we live in have created new substances and ways to replace the natural way to eat meat, people will always have reason to go back to the original way to get the basic nutrition of meat. Human beings should support the basic idea that eating meat is ethical because human bodies were created to be omnivore, people have evolved to manipulate animals in an intelligent manner, and there are several alternative and ethical ways of eating meat. The traits that the human body consist of are meant for more natural foods to be ingested, which are both both meats and vegetables, making humans omnivores. The teeth and digestive tract that individuals were provided with are meant to break down animal and plant based foods to provide nutrients to the rest of the body to keep it running (McArdle). People were meant to eat meat in the first place, it cannot be considered "unethical," because it is a part of the natural way of life. For example, when a lion hunts its prey to provide dinner for its cub and mate, it is not considered unethical, it is a part of the lion's daily life. The lion going after the prey as a source of food is its way of survival, and is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Omnivore 's Dilemm A Natural History Of Four Meals Jo–Anney Yandall Food & Societies Dr. Kathryn Besio The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals Michael Pollan. New York: Penguin Group, 2006. 1–411 pp., (ISBN 978–0–14–303858–0). As omnivorous beings, it seems that is both a blessing and a curse to have such a vast amount of meal choices to choose from. In The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan explores the majority of these options and offers a sort of guide on how to make a choice. The UC Berkeley Graduate School journalism professor takes us on an eye–opening ride with this book where we find out horrifying truths on the ingredients of the foods we eat every day and whether our choices benefit our bank accounts more than they do our health and the earth. The book is divided into three sections with each section focused on the major players in our diet in terms of where they come from. The first section (consisting of the first seven chapters) would, of course, focus the industrial food chain. The second emphasizes alternative foods, mainly organic foods and the last section is based on hunter–gatherer foods. Each section ends with a meal that he consumes and gives us his thoughts on such. Pollan begins his journey of exploring the industrial food chain by taking a trip to the supermarket. Reason being, most Americans, buy their food from such stores. During this trip, he finds what seems to be a wide variety of choices. However, majority of these choices have one thing in common: they have corn in them or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Persuasive Speech About Animal Cruelty You want to know something horrify and heartbreaking? People say they love animals but that's false. Something that animal lovers don't know is that 56 billion farmed animals are killed every year by humans and 200 million animals are reported killed by hunters in the United States every year. Treating animals for their fur and bones is not good for them and us. There meat can cause cancer, using their belongings is depressing and there should be more compassionate for them. I see animals as humans because they can feel happiness, sadness, anger and lastly pain. Animals can't fight for their body but in this generation many vegetarians and vegans are against animal cruelty. In this life babies are born to feed at first when they come ... Coyote are highly adaptable species, even when it moves into human occupied territory. They adjust their hunting techniques to whatever prey they laid its eye onto. For hunting smaller prey alone, they usually stalk behind the prey and pounce onto them; for bigger prey such as deer, they hunt in small packs and take down the prey as one. Because of their ability of adapting most habitats, like deserts, plains, and grasslands, they can spread their habitat range all across the continent, even in large cities in urban area (Baker & Bonine 2015). Originating in the west of North America, the coyote spread eastward into Ontario, and continue move forwards to Quebec and other eastern provinces (Dumancic & Caverley, 2014). (1995) regarding bottom up processes in coral reef ecosystem. Also show a profound contrast to widely accepted top–down processes in coral reef ecosystem, indicated by weak relationship on prey– predator interaction and strong positive relationship between hard coral cover and fish biomass. Despite there are more studies confirm cascading effect in coral reefs such as indirect effect on mesopredator and herbivore density( (Friedlandler and DeMartini 2002; Ruppert et al. 2013; Ritchie and Johnson 2009), algal cover sponge cover (Rasher et al 2013; Loh et al. 2015) resulting decline in coral cover and juvenile coral (Rasher et al 2013; Casey et al 2015). However, most of those research were conducted in region where confounding factors persists such as fishing pressure across many trophic levels (predator, herbivore, planktivore), pollution, and terrestrial run–off. Eventhough some research were conducted in the nearly pristine area, such as Dulvy (2004) in Lau Island Fiji with human population densities ranging between two and 42 people km–2. However, this area may not be pristine in a historical context and non exclusive predator fishing still occurs. Hence, recent unambiguous empirical evidence of trophical cascade in coral reef ecosystem with the absent of confounding factors was scarce (Ferretti et al 2010). • 45. The Common Raccoon ( P. Lotor The common raccoon (P. lotor) has been said to be one of the most widespread urban mammalian carnivores. Characterised by its fox–like face, bushy striped tail, and unmistakable "mask" of dark patches around their eyes, the growing population of urban raccoons has become somewhat of an epidemic. These small creatures are known for their relatively high intellect, enabling them to access human resources. Raccoons are omnivores, and have been consistently observed to eat virtually anything. Additionally, even though raccoons are technically both primary consumers and secondary consumers, they are best described as being scavengers. Raccoons have very little social structure relatively; they are known as solitary animals, most likely stemming from their nocturnal behaviors. Quite often, they will be found traveling as either a family (until the young reach adolescence, at which time they leave), or an individual. They are notorious carriers of disease, can outcompete native species, and can be quite aggressive when confronted by humans. For these reasons and more, the urban raccoon is considered a pest, and in many areas there have been countless efforts to control their populations (Gehrt, S. D., et. al., 2010, Pg. 35–47). This paper will propose actions that would need to be taken in order to deter raccoons from pursuing human waste as a food source in the effort of controlling their population. Due to the raccoon's opportunistic nature, overtime the species have found ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Animal Cruelty In Factory Farming The American diet boils down to three distinct options, each differentiated by the type of meat they eat, omnivores, selective omnivores, and vegetarians or vegans. Omnivores are people who eat whatever they so choose, the big distinction between omnivores and the other two dietary options is the fact that regular omnivores will eat factory farmed meat. Vegetarians or vegans and selective omnivores choose to either not eat meat, or to eat humanely grown meat. A major reason why these groups make that choice is because they know what factory farming is, and they know what happens within these farms. Animal cruelty in factory farming is probably the largest reason why these groups make that choice. And while making any dietary choice other than being a normal omnivore and eating factory farmed animals is a wise choice, being a vegetarian or vegan is simply not realistic in some cases, it is too extreme. The perfect middle ground for the American diet between the two extremes, eating factory farmed meat and not eating meat at all is to become a selective omnivore and eat only humanely grown meat. Animal cruelty within factory farms is a very real thing. The concept of animal cruelty is one that has many different interpretations. People have an array of perceptions from simply treating animals poorly to animal abuse in general. In reality animal cruelty is every possible malpractice in taking care of animals such as living conditions, the way animals are treated, and the food ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first article I chose to use for my research paper, is from the scientific journal American Scientist, called "Meat–Eating Among the Earliest Humans," written by Briana Pobiner who is a paleoanthropologist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. In this article, Pobiner discusses the biological evolution of humans, how human meat consumption evolved over time to facilitate the growth of human brain size to become the intelligent and sentient beings we are today, and whether or not we still need to eat meat as our ancestors did. Pobiner references many other scientists' observations and discoveries. For example, she uses the observations of a Mister Sherwood Washburn from the University of California at Berkeley to expound upon how early findings of human meat consumptions may have been wrong. • 57. Analysis of "A Savage Life" Essay Through the use of anecdotes in the article "A Savage Life", Suzanne Winckler effectively points out that it is important to understand where your food comes from. Winckler helps convey to readers that while butchering animals is no fun, it is necessary for the survival of omnivores. She argues that meat–eaters are out of touch with reality; instead of recognizing that an animal must be sacrificed for their meal, most consumers mindlessly devour the food on their plates – without a thought of where their food came from. Winckler states "I am too far gone in my rational Western head to appropriate the ritual of cultures for whom the bloody business of hunting was a matter of survival" (634); in this statement she adequately appeals to logos ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through this proclamation, Winckler successfully appeals to pathos because she makes it simple for the audience to see the connection between a newborn and a chicken about to lose its life. Both chickens and newborns are ignorant to the world and rather helpless – comparing a human to the food that one eats helps to put the killing of a chicken into perspective. Winckler then gruesomely explains what it is like to behead a chicken; appealing to both pathos and ethos: "Headless chickens don't run around. They thrash with such force and seeming coordination that they sometimes turn back flips" (633). By using imagery to describe this horrific requirement for killing a chicken, Winckler is seen as a credible and factual source. After slaying her first chicken, Winckler "realized why cultures, ancient and contemporary, develop elaborate rituals for coping with the grisly experience of killing any sentient creature" (633). She appeals to logos in this quote by informing readers of the epiphany she came to – taking them through her mind's thought process; this makes her come across as a logical being, not a demented human. By appealing to logos in this quote, Winckler invokes thought in readers' minds; she productively addresses that killing animals is disturbing and off–putting but necessary for survival, since most nations perform rituals ... • 61. Vegetarianism and Meat Eating in Food Culture Essay Christopher McCandless, a young American who was found dead in summer of 1992 in wild land in Alaska, wrote in his diary about his moral struggle regarding killing a moose for survival. According to Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild, Chris had to abandon most of the meat since he lacked the knowledge of how to dismantle and preserve it (166–168). Not only did he have a moral dilemma to kill a moose, but also had a deep regret that a life he had taken was wasted because of his own fault. He then started recognizing what he ate as a precious gift from the nature and called it "Holy Food" (Krakauer 168). Exploring relationships between human beings and other animals arouses many difficult questions: Which animals are humans allowed to eat and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For human, to master agriculture and trade about 10,000 years ago widely expanded their food options that enable modern human to become a vegetarian (Corliss). A vegetarian does not eat meat not only because it tastes bad, but also it means something to him or her. The more one has faith in vegetarianism, the more one restricts one's food choice in reality. Henry David Thoreau, who is known as one of the first environmental writers of the 20th century in the U.S. and had lived in woods alone, writes in his essay Walden that hunting and eating animals had bothered him because it seemed as it degraded himself to a beast. For him, eating animals is "not agreeable to [his] imagination" (Thoreau 169) as Thoreau strongly believed that "to leave off eating animals" is "a part of the destiny of the human race" (Thoreau 170). While his belief and the reality he faced had conflicted each other, he tried his best to find a way to live without relying much on meat. Even in a wild, what drove Thoreau was anthropocentric thinking that human can control nature. This dilemma in food choice that bothered Thoreau is what Michael Pollan calls the omnivore's dilemma. He puts it in his same–titled book in this way: "When you can eat just about anything nature has to offer, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If you step back into the present you may realize that most farms today are very different than that of the past or what we would see in a painting. According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) there are more than 20,000 factory farms nationwide. This is a 30 percent increase from 2003. These farms are industrial–scale facilities where animals are treated as a product rather than a living creature. Thousands of animals are kept in these factories resulting in disease and contamination. In the widely acclaimed documentary Food Inc., directed by Robert Kenner, Carole Morison declared that "This isn't farming. This is just mass production like an assembly line in a factory." In fact there are so many animals that workers cannot even process the 1.3 billion tons of waste that is produced annually. To solve this problem, waste is piled into large open pools and sprayed onto the land resulting in health problems for not only the workers but the people who live nearby. Rivers, streams and groundwater may also get polluted from this process. • 73. Persuasive Essay : Should Humans Kill And Eating Animals? To kill or not to kill ,that's the question. Are we, humans, justified in killing and eating animals? Natural born carnivores such as lions and tigers don't have the choice of whether or not they want to eat meat or plants as we do. So why is it that we eat meat? The controversy on eating meat has been around for almost as long as humans have been. While some may argue that it is unethical to eat meat, it has been proven to have a better impact on the environment compared to plant based diets. There are disadvantages and advantages of eating meat and of eating plant. Although meat is good for the body, it affects the environment both positively and negatively, the same goes for eating non– meat products. Many people believe that humans feel satisfied when eating meat, while animals eat meat for survival. However, researchers have proven that meat contains the necessary nutrients and proteins that are hard to find anywhere else. Many animals kill and eat each other, so why is it unfair for humans to eat meat? One of the differences between us and those animals is the fact that they were born carnivores. Lions and tigers on a daily basis hunt down other animals for survival. The article "Animals Eat Other Animals, So Why Shouldn't We?" by Free From Harm Staff Writers, states that we, humans, kill animals for pleasure, and not for survival. • 77. The Ethics Of Eating Meat Essay The Ethics of Eating Meat We are a nation of meat eaters. We are socialized from a young age to consume high levels of animal products. This deeply ingrained meat–eating tradition is a big part of the American standard diet. A visit to the local grocery store shows that there is no shortage of animal products. Isle by isle you see a plethora of meats, neatly packed and ready to be cooked, dairy products neatly shelved, and even candies that contain animal by–products. This is an omnivore's utopia, allowing for a lifestyle that involves the overconsumption of meats and animal by–products. The rampant meat industry has managed to condition people to disassociate the meats in our grocery markets and the animals from which they came. Most people have become unaware omnivores, consuming whatever meats are available to them. This shift of moral degradation is evident in how we process and consume our meats. We have become a selfish society that values our own convenience and affordability of meat rather than the consideration of the animal. This begs the question, is eating meat inherently wrong and should we forbid meat consumption under any and all circumstances? To fully address this issue, we must first define the moral status of animals. So, are animals equal to humans in worth and value and should they receive similar treatment? In our country, the scarcity of food is not an issue of underdeveloped methods of agriculture, it is an issue of poverty. We have an abundance of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Over half of world population is carnivorous, that's almost 4 billion humans eating meat on a daily base. Even though cruelty to an animal is live on air. People still seem heartless and does not care about millions of livestock being slaughtered daily. Omnivore comes from the Latin words omne meaning all or everything and vorare meaning to eat or devour. The author Michael Pollan wrote this book to inform the readers that the food choice they make have major consequences. There are two main reasons why the food in the United States is unhealthy. An unhealthy decision in our modern diet is that human beings are eating too many corn products. Farmers started feeding animals corn and it has a negative impact in todays society. • 97. How do Raccoons Adapt? The ecosystem consists of communities with different populations of species. Each diverse animal in the ecosystem has a unique way of surviving the abiotic and biotic factors in the environment through its traits; behavioral traits, morphological traits and physiological traits. Some of its traits prevent these organisms from predation, and others allows organism to survive when temperature are too high or too low. The strategy to survival depends on the animal. Let's talk about the Procyon lotor also known by the name raccoon (Source 2). Raccoon are nocturnal; which means they sleep in the day and are awake at night. They are also omnivore, which means plants and animals. Some plants they consume are berries, leaves and fruits, and they prey on insects, frogs and crayfish. Raccoons are found in forests, mashes prairies and in cities. These masked bandits are live many place; in a hole in a tree, in a log, and in a house attic. Their predators are cougars, bobcats and coyotes ( Source 2). These characteristics of the raccoons and some of these basic necessities decide whether an animal survives or not. The environment the raccoon is present decides its adaptation. When the weather changes, an animal has to adapt to its environment. When autumn is about to end, raccoons eat most of their food in the spring so that they have enough fat and body heat to stay warm for the winter. The Omnivore's Dilemma is a very interesting, informative book. In the following paragraphs I will explain how pure evidence alone won't make much of a difference for most people. I will write about how family and media can influence your food choices, our society today and how people might think I'm wrong. The people we spend time around have a big impact on what we eat. Take family, for example, your parents usually decide what to eat. If your parents read something about what's healthy, then you might be eating that for dinner next week. "I didn't write The Omnivore's Dilemma to convince you to eat one kind of food or another." Michael Pollan says in The Omnivore's Dilemma. Most food literature persuades a person to eat a certain way; whether it's vegetarian or omnivore, whether a diet of mostly grains is good of if starch is bad. My mom read Dr. David Ludwig's book Always Hungry? and was influenced that fats aren't what makes people fat. Vegetarian Vs Omnivore Whether it be because of religion, culture, or personal choice, millions of people worldwide do not eat meat, and the majority of the population, the omnivores, often ridicule these people, the vegetarians, for their choices. This has sadly created a divide between thousands of people, however the cause of this separation is simple. One side, whether it be the omnivores or the vegetarians, feels the need to impose its choices onto the other side. Both sides are at fault here, as the omnivores tell the vegetarians that they cannot get proper nutrients from a plant–based diet, and the vegetarians try to tell the omnivores that they are torturing animals by killing them for food. The omnivores are wrong because, while it does require careful planning, vegetarians can easily get the nutrients they need, and the vegetarians are hypocritical because, as the article will show, farming kills thousands of creatures. The author of Even Small–Scale Vegetable Farming Requires Hunting Animals, Tovar Cerulli, is a vegan writer and speaker. This comes to show that the support for veganism and vegetarianism is an ecological, ethical, or health concern issue, "Nearly all plant eaters have fermenting vats (enlarged chambers where foods sits and microbes attack it). Ruminants like cattle and deer have forward sacs derived from remodeled esophagus and stomach. Horses, rhinos, and colobine monkeys have posterior, hindgut sacs. Humans have no such specializations.. The short canines in humans are a functional consequence of the enlarged cranium and associated reduction of the size of the jaws. In archeological sites, broken human molars are most often confused with broken premolars and molars of pigs, a classic omnivore" (VRG). Although there is evidence to back up humans being omnivores, is it morally justified for humans to eat meat when survival is not a threat? If one's morals say no, there's many diets that exist that don't include animals. A vegan diet consists of not consuming any animal products. Humans choose this diet for many reasons, but one of the main reasons is to cut down on animal cruelty. Jonathan Safran Foer talks about the morality of harming animals for food in his book Eating Animals, "What our babysitter said made sense to me, not only because it seemed true, but because it was the extension to food of everything my parents had taught me. We don't hurt family members. We don't hurt friends or strangers. We don't even hurt upholstered furniture. My not having thought to include animals in that list didn't make them the exceptions to it. It just made me a child, ignorant of the world's workings" (Foer). It takes a while for zebras to absorb nutrients so that is why they eat for most of the day. It takes up to 12 hours for full digestion to take place in a zebra. Their digestive systems also contain a lot of microbes so that they are able to break down their food as it is all plant matter and the microbes help to break down cell walls. Their digestive systems are made to digest food that is rich in cellulose. pH of stomach Zebras have a pH of 6–7 but their stomachs are very acidic with a pH of 1–2. Their stomachs are more acidic because they have to break down the food a lot and need higher levels of acidity to do so. Feeding habits A zebra eats constantly throughout the day and can eat an average of 9 kg of food a day. They eat for roughly 22–24 hours a day. They eat for most of the day so that it helps maintain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 121. Omnivores Research Paper Humans are omnivores, meaning we eat a variety of foods, including meat and plant matter. A quick glance at your own teeth will give you a sense of the variety of shapes and sizes of teeth an omnivore can have. Human teeth are not indicative of exactly what you will see in the mouth of all omnivores. Each omnivore will have teeth that are specifically adapted to the diet these animals consume. Animals with teeth like humans that use their molars for grinding and their incisors and canines for ripping or tearing are said to have heterodont dentition. Each tooth is designed for a specific role in processing the food eaten. Homodont dentition, found in most omnivorous reptiles, occurs when the teeth are all relatively the same size and shape. ... • 125. Justifying Murder Justifying Murder I see the others at the table. Their pupils growing as they see the server bring the food toward the table; hungry for the pleasure that they lust for. Tapping feet. Watering mouths. The plates slam down on the table, the grease splatters near me giving off the scent of burnt iron. The texture is dark. The blood drips from the knife, used to butcher. The others dig in, sloppily getting the juices on their faces, the sheen of sauce on their lips shining in the reflection of my eyes. I hear the slurping coming from the others mouths, it makes me cringe. Chomping, munching, chewing. The grinding of teeth. The gulps. The satisfied burps. This bloody object, worshipped almost like a God. Repulsive. That was an animal once; now it is simply nothing more than a product, something put on the shelves of the super market. The consumption of meat. My distaste of meat started when I was in middle school, the time in which I was realizing the reality of things around me. This lead to the discovery of where meat actually comes from. Children don't necessarily question the food they are eating, or where it derives from– they just happily devour anything placed in front of them, oblivious of its source. But when one starts to mature and understand how and why things happen, those children will start to see the world from a more realistic point of view. As I went through this process, I discovered a few realities along the way; one of which was that meat comes from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 129. Animal Ethics And Animal Farming Not only does killing and torturing animals for the consumption of their meat and products harm the animal but it harms humans and our planet as well. It is common to find people who are omnivores in our country and rare to find a vegan. The vegan lifestyle is the only way that we can save this planet. Usually, if you are eating dinner and someone mentions the animal that you are eating, when it was living, another person at the table freaks out because they do not want to think of that. We disassociate ourselves with the actual living animal that has suffered huge amounts on our plates because we see ourselves as animal lovers who are against inhumane torture and killing of animals. You can not classify yourself as an animal lover if you consume an animal or their product because you are still supporting their demise. Why? Because the taste pleases us. That is all. We are disgusted by people who torture and hurt animals for pleasure. For example, people disassociate themselves from the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team due to the actions of the player Michael Vick. Vick ran a dog fighting ring and bet on dogs to kill one another. Why? For no other reason than the fact that it pleased him. We say that we are animal lovers and agree that animals have at least some moral value but how does this make killing and torturing animals for our consumption okay? Animal agriculture and factory farming are huge industries that are sort of swept under the rug by omnivores. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 137. Omnivore Vs Vegetarianism Intro: According to Albert Einstein, "It is my view that the vegetarian manner of living... would most beneficially influence the lot of mankind." The debate over whether or not it is healthier to be a vegetarian or an omnivore has been a controversy for decades. Omnivores argue that vegetarians don't consume enough protein and need meat to maintain a healthy regimen. Vegetarians disagree and call attention to the risk of diseases while consuming meat in addition to the harmful effects of what eating animals do to our planet. Einstein's quote perfectly expresses the concept that being vegetarian is more beneficial to mankind. A vegetarian lifestyle is not only constructively for the human body, but it is what will protect and preserve our fascinating planet. Response: ... • 141. Omnivore's Dilemma By Michael Pollan Alyx Gordy Omnivore's Dilemma Essay Mr. Webb 5th period 8/27/14 Book Review In Michael Pollan's book "The Omnivore's Dilemma" he examines the main question "What should we have for dinner?" (Page 1) He also examines the true meaning of food in today's society. When we have just about any type of food available at our fingertips, it tends to cause a dilemma, an omnivore's dilemma. We tend to make poor decisions due to the fact that we have so many choices. To answer the question "What should we have for dinner?" Pollan decides that he needs to know where food comes from. Through his journey Pollan discovers many problems with how food is produced such as, food preservation techniques, and sanitary transportation. In the Omnivore's Dilemma, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He likes to eat junk food and McDonald's just as much as the rest of us. He is telling the story of the Omnivore's Dilemma from his own point of view because, just like the rest of us, he is an omnivore. He is explaining our epic food dilemma so the readers can understand and relate to his predicament. He does a good job of using real world examples, like a meal from McDonald's, to help the readers see the problem, which is that we have absolutely no clue where our food comes from, let alone what products make up our food. Michael Pollan argument in the Omnivore's Dilemma is very convincing because he has volunteered countless hours of his own time to find out where food comes from, and what exactly the food is made from. He visits many different farms, and actually learns how food begins its journey to his dinner plate by being "curious to learn whom, and what [he'd] find at the far end of the food chain that keeps [him] alive." (Page 33) By meeting with and talking to the owner of one of Iowa's most productive farms, Pollan learns all of the ins and outs of farming, consequently learning the beginnings of his dinner. He even purchased his own cow, steer 534, to track exactly where his food was going and how it was being processed. "[He] wanted to follow one of [the] steers through the life cycle." (Page 72) By purchasing his own steer, we see how committed Pollan is to this project, and finding out exactly where our dinner ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to scientists, animals can either be herbivores (plant eaters), carnivores (flesh eaters), or omnivores (both plant and animal origin eaters). For the body to be healthy, people need to consume foods with high nutrient density. Beezhold, Bonnie, Cynthia Radnitz, Amy Rinne, and Julie DiMatteo confirm that plant based diets have an impact on adult's moods and lower anxiety in their report written in the article "Vegans Report Less Stress and Anxiety than Omnivores." The authors report a study carried out to investigate the mood and factors that influence mood of Vegans, Vegetarians, and Omnivores. A total of 620 adults' mood, diet, and lifestyle factors were surveyed in an online sample. The number of Vegans were 283, vegetarians were 109, omnivores were 228 and 78.5 percent of the volunteers were women. The authors record that vegetarian males and vegan males were found to have lower anxiety scores than omnivore males. Lower anxiety and lower stress were found to be related to a vegan diet and lower intake of sweets. The authors assert that a strict plant based diet may not have a negative impact on mood, rather reducing animal based diets may promote mood improvement. They conclude by saying that eating more of plant based diets with lower intake of animal products might be associated with better mental health. According to this research, it is obvious that vegetarianism is associated with lower anxiety and mood ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 153. The Omnivore's Dilemma By Michael Pollan Food Culture In 2009 food detective Michael Pollan published an eye–opening book called The Omnivore's Dilemma. According to Pollan, we don't know what to eat because unlike other cultures around the world, Americans lack a stable food culture. Food cultures are traditions that are passed down from generation to generation to teach us how to cook and eat food. These cultures can help you stay healthy and more importantly, enjoy your food. In chapter 8 of the Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan explains how other cultures like the French have traditions that have been passed down for generations. For instance, in chapter 8 Michael Pollan says that " You'll never see a French person eating while driving or walking down the street. They seldom eat alone. Instead, they eat with family or friends, and their meals are long leisurely affairs. In other words, the French culture of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pollan explains all throughout the book about how food companies and the industrial food industry tend to modify their products to seem more appealing to the modern omnivore. They slap on labels that say organic, or cage–free. They also modify the food so that it says reduced fat, or gluten–free. But in reality, they are taking out vital nutrients and other things that we depend on to survive. Pollan tells us at the beginning of chapter 8 that " Today the modern omnivore has almost no culture to fall back on.
