The Lovely Bones Trailer Analysis
1.
2. The Lovely Bones Trailer
• Camerawork – at the beginning there are lots
of close up shots (emphasise the child's
happiness, making the audience suspect this
may change)
• Normal conventions of a teenage girl (teen
crush, fashion, vogue etc.)
3. • Montage of events in her life at beginning,
showing happy teen (suspect may change)
• Setting – colours at beginning bright, show
happiness of 1970s-80s and fashion of period.
• Sound – quiet music at the beginning in
background (non diegetic), allows character
speech. Allows audience to see girls
interaction and life better at beginning of
trailer.
4. • Narrative – uses montage of girl (Susie) happy
at the beginning of trailer to shock viewers of
her sad end of her life to come.
• Iconography – camera, pictures of her life (last
shot girl takes on camera is when she says her
life has ended) symbolises the end to her
happiness and joy.
5. • Colour - after the non diegetic voiceover says
she was murdered the setting and colour
changes to dull showing the atmosphere of
the film is now sad/serious.
• Montage sequence throughout of Susie in the
afterlife and family dealing with her
death/finding out who killed her.
• Quick shot durations
6. • Young girl shows the audience her afterlife
then non diegetic voiceover saying her
murderer haunts her which then turns the
film to more realistic matters. The phone rings
and her dad wants the truth into who killed
his daughter.
• As this happens the music intensifies, shots
quicker (show the audience the seriousness of
the situation)
7. • Bright colours of girl in the afterlife
(imagination) shows there is still slight
happiness for her; but not much as she is
trapped in her former life.
• Chase at end of trailer, quick transitions.
Music gets louder (intensifies), shots quicker.
• Credits – white writing, black background.
• White connotations of innocence, black
connotations of dark, death.
8. • From trailer film seems to be a hybrid of
genres such as Thriller, Murder, Crime,
Romance etc. This is something me and my
group are interested in doing meaning
watching and analysing this trailer has been
very helpful for us.
9. BricBkr Ticrkailer
• Colour – neutral, shows darkness/intensity of
trailer/film.
• Music as soon as trailer starts (repetitive beat)
and non diegetic voiceovers of a conversation.
Audience can realise something is going to
happen. Cuts to character in phone booth in
conversation (iconography)
10. • Then close up of newspaper (missing article,
shows audience that will be the basis of the film)
Tells the audience this quickly so they know the
plot quick.
• This is iconography as the audience will
automatically link the phone call to the the
newspaper article.
• Credits – important messages characters say are
projected on the screen in a blue font
(connotations of coldness)
11. • Camerawork – close up shots used (high
angle, low angle of a conversation) one with
high angle could show he is active in the case
and a more important character, trying to find
out where she is. Low angle boy could show
he is inactive in the case(may not care)
• ‘brick’ repeated reminded back to title of film;
shows has a deeper meaning.
12. • Editing – montage sequence , shows better
the male characters fight to find where the girl
is/what happened to her. (different events)
• Setting – School mainly (show teen, coming of
age crime mystery drama/thriller.
• Costume – normal clothes. In certain shots
there are women dressed differently in red
shows the boy is out of his comfort zone to
find out more about the case.
• Gun – connotations of death/murder.
13. Brick is a hybrid of genres such as thriller,
murder, romance, crime etc. This is like what us
as a group would like our final outcome to be
like. This trailer/film also has a similar story line
as for our film our story is about a girls
boyfriend who has been murdered and she
wants to find out who killed him. This shows this
film is going to be very helpful to us as a group
to show us the type of thing we need to achieve
and to give us ideas for our teaser trailer.
