Disadvantages of Teaching Foreign Language At High School
In this modern world for achieving maximum things with easy pathway is more convenient.
Some schools have made foreign language as compulsory course for students. Also, they have
criteria for passing the course along with foreign languages like English, Spanish, French
German and many more. However, these compulsive programs bring some advantages along
with some disadvantages. Many schools are now not offering creative or art course to students
and bilingual education is questionable.
Firstly, to grasp the vocabulary and pronunciation of any new language at adolescents is much
harder than to young children. Their brains are programmed with their mother tongue which is
also a fact of non-frequent adaption of foreign language. This makes high school students
overloaded and distracted from the actual technical subject which may in return cause negative
feeling towards learning. That is because there are difficult concepts are been taught in other
courses at same time. They should be allowed to focus on basic subjects which demands plenty
of effort and time. If a student is struggling with division and is also struggling with foreign
language grammatical concepts; it could be an adverse effect on their education. The faculty
of high school may not be trained at basic level of teaching for foreign language. If any
language specialist is called for taking special sessions then it would be difficult, as the
flexibility of sessions will be diminished.
On other hand, the cost of learning foreign language can be expensive. Students may have to
pay extra amount to each subject of foreign languages which increases overall fees of study.
At the time, if the student is weak at that foreign language subject then, they will approach
private tutoring which are more expensive. Local and single program is easier and cheaper to

operate. For bilingual education to be effective, it must continue throughout the career of the
students who choose to participate in it.
To some students learning a new language is not useful as they are not interested in visiting
other countries, or they can not afford travelling to other countries, they neither plan to settle
or work in other countries. The investment in learning foreign language requires significant
contribution of time, effort and money. Students can do better things such as spending time
with family or friends, improve math skills, increase reading speed or improve writing/listening
skills, plant a garden, exercise or lean a non-expensive hobby.
In addition to this, at much extend this bilingual education creates isolation. Many students
found themselves making friends in that class only. This may expose the student to new
cultures, but it also gives a culture gap at local level. The bilingual education creates cultural
differences between two language extremes.
In nutshell, I strongly believe that children should learn a foreign language at primary levels
rather than in high school as drawbacks outweigh the benefits culturally and economically.
Young children’s grasping power can make benefits more achievable.
