their ideas, the way they use particular building
blocks”strategies. or moves to express ideas.
The image at right right captures common
structures: description (definition, too),
sequence (AKA “process analysis;
compare/contrast; cause and effect’ and
problem/solution. Missing from this list is
“categorization”, dividing by type.
Rather than thinking about a “compare and
contrast” essay or a “cause and effect” essay,
we need to consider how we choose multiple
text structures for our projects, how we
combine, mix, and remix these structures for
our own purposes and our particular audiences.
