  12. 12. A first highlight of cleantech in Flanders is the capturing ofpotential from the North Sea: off-shore wind and wave energy Energy Production at Sea Flansea  By 2020, an additional 42GW of off-shore wind capacity will be installed in the North Sea Oostende  The port of Oostende has been restructured to accomodate this industry: adapted port infrastructure, dedicated industry terrains, R&D center and incubator  Research project Flansea will build a wave energy convertor based on the point absorber technology  These wave energy convertors can be placed in between the offshore windfarms, between the turbines Sources: Port of Oostende; Powerlink Confidential – © 2009, VITO NV – All rights reserved
  13. 13. At the port of Ghent, the Ghent Bio Energy Valley is located Bio Base Europe A cross border initiative  Bio Base Europe, Europe’s first open innovation Gent and education center for the biobased economy.  Flanders and The Netherlands have joined forces to build state-of-the-art research and training facilities  The pilot plant in Ghent provides a one-stop shop for the full production process..Biorefinery cluster in port of Ghent Largest European integrated production facility for biofuels  ..and will allow the development and optimisation of biobased processes, upscaling up to 10M3/ton and pilotproduction of new bioproducts to test market and application potential  The training center in Terneuzen (NL) will provide demonstration- and educational equipment for production of biodiesel, bio- ethanol (1st & 2nd generation), biogas, heat pumps, solar cells & wind turbines Sources: Ghent Bio energy Valley Confidential – © 2009, VITO NV – All rights reserved
  14. 14. Our 3rd highlight is sustainable chemistry at the port of Antwerp (4th largest port of the world) Flanders Initiative for Sustainable Chemistry GentSources: VITO; BASF; FERI; NIS Confidential – © 2009, VITO NV – All rights reserved
  15. 15. At the same location, we have an important landfill, projects arebeing set-up for valorisation of solid waste and waste gasses Hooghe Maey Gent Remo Algae project at Hooghe Maey Enhanced Landfill Mining at Remo Sources: VAP; ELFM; OVAM Confidential – © 2009, VITO NV – All rights reserved
  16. 16. Where previously coal mines were located, we now haveEnergyville & the EIT KIC on energy efficient buildings & cities EIT & Energyville “The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) launched its first 3 Knowledge and Innovation Communities Gent (KICs)”:  Climate change mitigation and adaptiation: Climate KIC  Sustainable Energy: KIC InnoEnergy  Future Information and communication society: ICT labs EIT KIC Energy & InnoEnergy “Energyville” will host:  Knowledge Center Smart and Efficient cities  R&D center on balancing energy S&D; Local renewable production; End-use flexibility; Storage  Pilot Project Linear (smart grid, 1000 buildings, hybrid cars, renewable energy, etc.) Sources: VITO; Energyville Confidential – © 2009, VITO NV – All rights reserved
  17. 17. The latest highlight is Flanders’ transformation into a “living lab” on sustainable mobility Living Lab Sustainable Mobility Gent  A total 8 research institutes and 51 companies are involved, including multinationals  Organised into 5 cooperative platforms, to test technologies, services and concepts  More than 600 EV’s and chargings tations will be installed throughout the region  Concepts like networked mobility, advanced battery technology, integrated infrastructure (microgrids, VPP, EV’s), user adoptability, new businessmodels, services (payment clearing, leasing,..) are to be tested  These 5 platforms welcome innovative ideas, enterpreneurs wanting to test their business models with partners in projectsSources: VITO; Proeftuin EV Confidential – © 2009, VITO NV – All rights reserved
  18. 18. The latest government initiative is the creation of i-CTV: i-Cleantech Flanders Gent Confidential – © 2009, VITO NV – All rights reserved
  19. 19. A new government initiative regards sustainable materials management Sustainable materials management Gent Goals : •The use of primary resources in the production and consumption must decrease •Maximal decrease of total resource waste •Maximal decrease of material per unit of production and/or unit of consumption •Maximal reduction of the total environmental impact when using material resources. 9 lines of actions with total of 45 projects All parties involved : government, industrie, knowledge institutes Wants to be a motivator in Europe and lighting example.Sources: VITO; Proeftuin EV Confidential – © 2009, VITO NV – All rights reserved
  20. 20. An upcoming highlight are the first deep geothermalpowerplants in Flanders Organic Rankine/screw expander 80/55°C Gent Swimming pool Industry 125°C Geothermal water Deep Geothermal Powerplants  3 to 5 power plants : 5 to 6 MWe – 35 to 40 MWth – investment cost : 30 Meuro per plant Offices/DH  Deep saline acquifers  bidding procedure for drilling is now open  Innovative drilling concepts are being studied Confidential – © 2009, VITO NV – All rights reserved
