The Starry Night and The Scream Vincent Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands on March 30,
1853. He pursued many other things in his life before deciding to become an artist. He was brought
up in a religious atmosphere, being the son of a preacher. He was a preacher himself for a while in
Borinage, a mining district in Belgium. At one point he wanted to dedicate his life to reaching out to
those in poverty. At other points in his life he worked as an art salesman and a bookstore clerk. After
being dismissed from preaching in Belgium, he remained there and began to study art. This period,
his early Dutch period, was characterized by somber tones and sharp lighting. The most famous

specifically intrigued you and why are they important to tourism? How does a book like this prepare
a tourist for their visit? Introduction Paris is a tantalizing place and Downie made it seem all the
more so with his unique approach to describing it. It was quite difficult to select one specific place
to explore since all seemed so tantalizing, but I eventually settled on the Île de Saint Louis as being
the most attractive location. Many of the subjects and locations covered by Downie tantalized me.
These were not only the more famous locations and topics such as the Seine, the Place des Vosges,
Coco Chanel, and Vincent van Gogh, but even more insignificant locations. Tantalizing too was
what Downie called the Paris underneath Paris (I..e all of the tunnels, nooks, crannies, and
catacombs which lie under the city proper),. Loving the sea and water in general, I was attracted to

under that movement were not very popular since the style was very different. The product of

Auvers by Vincent van Gogh, Goldfish by Henri Matisse, and Mont Sainte Victoire by Paul

The work of art Houses at Auvers by Vincent van Gogh was made after he left the
asylum at Saint Rémy de Provence. He admitted himself there because he was very sad and
before he arrived he cut off his ear and gave it to a prostitute as a gift. He only resided there for a
short amount of time (the end of 1888–1890) because he became bored. As a result, he moved to
Auvers–sur–Oise, northwest of Paris. There, he painted Houses at Auvers in June of 1890 which
was one of several works of art made before his suicide in the same year.
Houses at Auvers depicts a landscape of early summer in Auvers–sur–Oise. It's medium,
like most paintings in this era, is oil on canvas. In this work of art, viewers can see that the

giving up on the career of art dealing. Though unsure of where he wished to pursue himself, van

for France in 1886 that he decided to focus more on himself, thus transforming his style into what
we recognize more easily today. There seems to be a misconception that he had always painted with
vibrant colors and little thick strokes; but he only painted using vibrant and highly saturated colors

Frida Kahlo is a celebrated Mexican artist that came from a multi–racial background. Her heritage

The lines that are used do not outline individual objects in the painting but define the shapes of each.
They show the direction that the artist took when painting this particular art piece. They are delicate
and sensitive lines in the sense that they are not always visible but they still define the object.
The painting has been painted to a deep 2D form. This form creates an illusion of a large amount of
space. As if to create the illusion that you were looking out past the village towards the horizon. This

a misconception that his darker and less saturated paintings come from a short time in his life when
he experimented with dark colors; the reality is that his more saturated paintings were not developed
until the last four years of his life and his less saturated pieces come from a longer period in his life.

Much if not all of his work before 1886 was very similar; very little use of vibrant color, subject
matter was that of dark landscapes/scenes, still–lifes, and portraits of others (like The Potato Peeler).
It was not until he left for France that he decided to focus more on himself, thus transforming his
style into what we recognize more easily today. There seems to be a misconception that he had
always painted with vibrant colors and little thick strokes; but he only painted this way for a brief
time in his life. Van Gogh was influenced by Jean–François Millet to paint rural scenes and life
style; it is said that in the winter from 1884 to 1885, Van Gogh painted more that 40 portrait studies
of peasants, including The Potato Peeler (Department of European Paintings). These studies would

Look at the color red, a color known for its beauty and while it may not be in everybody's catalogue
of beauty, it cannot be denied of its intensity. If one is showed a stunning painting of a red rose, one
of the descriptions that could apply to that paining is beauty: seeing such an elegant spectacle of
nature being emulated on paper can be quite stimulating. Another description that could be
associated with a red rose is passion, as such a color may leave one energized and spontaneous;
however how would one respond if they were told that the painting of the rose was painted with
blood. Now a painting that once may have suggested the aspects of beauty and passion, may stir
descriptions such as fear, aggression, danger and yet passion as well; therefore, bringing one to the
understanding that "Every image embodies a way of seeing" (Berger, 142). This is why paintings

Berger in his book Ways of seeing in which he argues how through reproduction the modern context

was twelve drawings of the city view. In 1884 he rented a large space in Nuenen which was home to
many farmers, rural laborers and weavers and that's who he painted and sketched. He gave Theo

Beyond the Beauty
When having to choose two works of art to compare and analyze, it had occurred to me that one of
my all time favorite artist has always been Vincent Van Gogh. After searching through countless of
Van Gogh's magnificent works of art, I knew I wanted to analyze 'Houses in Auvers'. Once I chose
my first painting, the second piece fell right into place. Since Van Gogh was a painter in the post
impressionist movement, deciding to choose another painter from that movement worked out well. I
chose, 'Auvers, Panoramic View', painted by Paul Cezanne. A majority of people admiring these

the town had been painted. Having chosen to paint only a few houses from the town, this gives the
viewers a feel of homeliness. With this being said, the use of color in Van Gogh's is much more, and

Museum Trip From my Museum visit Research Paper I went to the Art Institute of Chicago. When I

This combination of personal shortcomings led to van Gogh's stints with being an assistant teacher
and a bookseller. He failed miserably in both cases. His parents, frustrated with supporting their
"failure" of a son, begged him to become a minister. He entered into Theology, but soon

I found it highly enjoyable to explore the unique artwork that the RISD Museum put on display.
Many art museums I have visited in the past, only sees to show drawings, paintings, or maybe
photographs. I thought it was neat that this museum expanded their artwork to kitchenware,
furniture, and architectural pieces as well. Although there were so many art pieces I appreciated, I
especially took interest in the Auvers–Sur–Oise by Vincent van Gogh. Vincent van Gogh is widely

I am no expert on Vincent van Gogh, but from what I know about him, his life was very intriguing
to me. Due to the fact that I found Gogh to be such a fascinating man, his art was even more
interesting to examine. As a psychology major maybe it's in my nature to analysis certain things
more intricately than others. Except, I find more meaning behind Gogh's paintings than just a
marvelous piece of artwork. In this case, Vincent van Gogh was able to illustrate something as
simple as a river, church, and the surrounding landscape, and I was still able to extract intense
emotion from his picture. The different textural patterns he uses represents a different emotion for
me. For instance, the yellow landscape is more of a cheerful feeling while the green tree's feel more

were his little brothers and sisters like a stranger to him, but he was a stranger to himself as well.
