Common Problems
Here’s a list of some common paper-related printing problems such as:
• Dusting,
• Mottle,
• Delimitation,
• Picking,
• Blanket Smashes,
• Wrinkling, Static Electricity.

Dusting and mottle Causes
Insufficient bonding between base sheet and coating:
• Uneven ink absorption
• Poor sheet formation
• Plate being run too dry

Challenge and Solutions
• Increase dampening
• Try different ink or print on reverse side
• Add more packing
• If there is a spare unit on the press, use it to print blind without water

Delimitation and Picking Causes
• If the internal bond of the paper cannot withstand the tack of the ink, the sheet will
delaminate.
• Ink too tacky

• Reduce ink tack
• Replace paper
• Change to less tacky blanket
• Reduce press speed

Blanket Smashes Causes
• Scuffs—a roll up on paper, usually originating at the edge of the sheet
• Folded edges
• Splices in cartons or skids

• When loading the press, examine sides of lifts

Causes
• Paper has wavy or tight edges
