The Vanishing Hitchhiker Essay
The Tale of the Vanishing Hitchhiker The legend of the Vanishing Hitchhiker has been evolving over many years as every town has a slightly different
tale to tell, but the gist of these tales have remained the same."A man picks up a young woman hitchhiking and when he turns to bid his unusual
hitchhiker goodbye he discovers that she has mysteriously disappeared from the car. He later learns that his mysterious passenger had died several
years earlier"("The Vanishing Hitchhiker"). Even though some believe that they have witnessed a being from the beyond communicating with them,
folklorist David Mikkelson proved them wrong once he came to realize. This backcountry lore of a young ladies vanishing without a trace from
vehicles started to spread like wildfire through many social media sites and local newspapers because the lore is just a hoax that has ... Show more

All they have to study is the accounts of others. "The appeal of vanishing hitchhiker lies in the nature of the encounter an interaction with a ghost that
occurs not because the main character went looking for the supernatural, but because it came to him. Such tales underscore the belief that
representatives from the spirit world can be encountered at any time and by anyone. Adding to the horror factor is the specter's passing for a living
person. That the driver does not recognize it as a ghost during their time together makes it all that more easy to believe we won't recognize a ghost
when we meet one, either."("The Vanishing Hitchhiker"). The many recorded vanishing hitchhiker sightings all have one thing in common, the fact
that it always seen by one who is not searching for the lore. With countless folklorists going out in search of these beings and them all coming up
empty, has convinced many of them that the lore is false, only to have been cultivated and nurtured by newspapers and social

it isn't even running down his face, he isn't wiping it away. He keeps staring at Brenda for a couple more minutes. He then stops and looks at the

Essay on Gone Baby Gone
Gone Baby Gone
Dennis Lehane writes satisfyingly complex and disturbingly violent crime fiction that often crosses into thriller territory. These are not, however, cheap
thrills. Even in their goriest moments, his books are grounded in rich, real–life detail. Lehane knows Boston and its denizens, and he captures the city's
subcultures beautifully –– from the hushed refinement of the old–money suburbs to the grittiness of tacky motels and bail–bond agencies. He has a
unique way of presenting his mysteries with an edge–of–the–seat feeling, yet his descriptive methods brings one into his neighborhoods and gives one
the feeling that they lived there their entire life.

back to a man in prison, Cheese Olamon. Cheese is a drug–dealer that Helene had done some work for in the past. Seems $200,000 is missing from one
of Helene's buys she went on for Cheese.
200 grand missing would make you mad, right? Would it make Cheese mad enough to take Amanda rather than take it out on Helene? The title of the
book comes from a warning Cheese gives Patrick, "Without me, that girl will be gone. Gone–gone. You understand? Gone, baby, gone." (p. 239)
Reading it, it makes you think Cheese has Amanda and is toying with our protagonists. But as Cheese says himself a little later, "Whatever you think
happened, you're not even in the ballpark. You guys are so offtrack, you might as well be in mother*censored*ing Greenland. Okay?" (p. 241) And
Cheese is right; all leads are drawing a dead–end. A year passes and Amanda stays gone, vanished, like she never existed.
Another child is reported missing. Angie stayed obsessed with Amanda's disappearance even though no new leads were given. She pored over their
case files; desperately searching for something they missed. This new disappearance restores Angie and Patrick's vigor for finding Amanda. But are
they any closer than they were a year ago?

Princess Blobfish Short Story
In the middle of Nowhere (Nowhere is the neighboring town to Shroom Land,) Lightning struck Nowhere town and sent it into burning hot flames.
All but one fled town and he placed a chest on a pedestal in the middle of the flames and he was engulfed in flames, and all thought he was dead. No
one dared to head back to the town.
On a sunny but cold day, Princess Blobfish marked another day off the golden calendar. She was a kind, sweet girl who knew when not to argue.
"Two more days 'til my B–day."she squealed excitedly. Clop clop clop. The princess looked out of her window and saw a whitehorse running wild, and
watched the skinny villager riding it tug at the horse's reins. Yet another day in her kingdom. She began to make her way to the dining hall when a
familiar voice beckoned "Princess, your father needs you."The butler said. "Again?" the princess questioned and started to walk to the king's chair.
"Yes father?" A loud voice boomed and she flinched "Stay in your room until the sun goes down."The king called. The princess knew not to argue and
went to her room where she spent most of her time.
A minute later, the king left his chair and hopped on a horse in the courtyard. He was feisty and demanding, fat, and VERY curious. "Let's be off."
the king said. He left the large kingdom headed to all the shops to find a present for his daughter, but no shops had any goods. He was angry and told

Our Treatment Of Nature By Daniel Quinn
In regards to our treatment of nature, you write, "Today, however, the population has grown to the point that nature itself is threatened but we have no
ethical tools with which to protect and defend nature." This problem has existed for quite some time, but has just not began to go widely noticed. A
philosopher in his own right, Daniel Quinn, speaks of similar topics using his character, Ishmael, to do so. To best describe this scenario, Ishmael had
a poster which read, "With man gone, will there be hope for gorilla?" this quote in itself hold little meaning until you take the deeper meaning by
using gorilla as nature; Quinn speaks throughout the book of how earth was not created for man, man is just one more short portion of earth's history
and will be seen as such when times change. The meaning of this quote then becomes, will earth have any hope if man dies? This interpretation
requires the assumption that man controls nature, he takes care of it, rather than being a part of it and respecting it. At the conclusion of the book,
Quinn shows the other side of the poster which held the quote and it reads, "with gorilla gone, will there be hope for man?" Again, once realizing
gorilla is a euphemism for nature, we realize nature what Quinn has been preaching the entire book, man does not control nature, nature was not
created for man, but man is slowly killing it. On your statement, saying the population is too great for nature to sustain everyone, I completely agree.

Symbolism And Hidden Meaning In Cormac Mccarthy's The Road
In Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" there are many different ideas or hints of symbolism and hidden meanings within the text. People have come up
with these theories involving the road that they spent so long walking alone, the woman, boy and man in the novel, and the whole idea of the world
ending. The setting takes place in an apocalyptic future where a road is no longer a means to get from one place to another, but is a remembrance of
the past. The roads are one of the few things that couldn't be destroyed by whatever disaster destroyed the earth, and the father and son spent most of
their time on a road leading to the coast. As a place for travel, the road is a place of both peace and danger. In the novel it comes to symbolize the drive

Analysis Of The Journey Along The Road By Cormac Mccarthy
The sun no longer shines as bright, the planet is getting colder by day, food stopped growing, ashes falling from the sky, a father and son are on a
mission to survive. During the journey along The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, the symbol of light and warmth contrasts this dark and scary place;
however the boy and the man are shown in the light and represent the good still on the world; humanity looks for the good in the world of bad
because it 's the key to their survival. Early in The Road light or goodness play a very minor role in the man and his son lives, the darkness that
surrounds them is much more evident especially in the beginning. However as the story plot evolves the light elements start to overpower the dark and

As they search the house they man finds a locked door, once they open the door and head down the stairs a horrible sight was before them." On the
mattress lay a man with his legs gone to the hip and the stumps of them blackened and burnt. The smell was hideous" (McCarthy 110–111). The
blackened and burnt man shows the darkness that these fellow survivors have come to; this is yet another place where evil is shown in its worse
form. The people living in the house were abducting other survivors and taking to this dark and dirty cellar to be used as a food. They were raising
these people for slaughter, the people in this house in the face of a crisis turned to cannibalism for food rather than going hungry. These people were
some of the worst of the worst. Moreover the boy and the man escaped the people–eating house a glimmer of hope fell upon them in the form of
apples. "He went row by row till he'd trod a puzzle in the grass. He'd more apples than he could carry" (McCarthy 121)."He lay in the floor on his
stomach and reached down. He could just touch the water... They spent the afternoon sitting wrapped in the blankets and eating apples. Sipping water
from jars" (McCarthy 122– 124). In the afternoon when the light of the sun reaches all corners of the land, the good in the world is shown. Yes the
boy and the man had been in some very hard situations over the last couple of years, but they always remain positive and every now and then

Some Too Fagile For Winter Wind Analysis
Essay #2 Throughout Some, too Fragile for Winter Winds written by Emily Dickinson the poem discusses nature that has alternative meanings. This is
also shown throughout The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. Both texts use nature to discuss how we face the harsh times in our life. Each of the texts
shows a way that a person copes with the harsh times in their life while using nature. Throughout Some, too Fragile for Winter Winds by Emily
Dickinson a mother is shown coping with the harsh times in her life after her children have died. While in The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe we see
someone coping with harsh times by looking for answers. Throughout both texts the speaker is coping with the harsh times that they have encountered
by describing nature.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The children are unnoticed by others and the mother is the only one that is protecting them. This poem shows the hard times that the mother must
face because her children have died. However the mother is coping with them while still protecting her children after they have died, This is the
mother's way of coping because she is not yet ready to let go of her children and still wants to care for them. This poem shows this through nature
by portraying the mother as a bird who is protecting her nest. Also the poem uses nature by describing the harsh times as a winter wind that has
caused harm to the mother and her children. The poem The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe shows a man coping with harsh times with the help of the
raven. The poem begins with the man alone where he hears something tapping on his door. He continues to hear the tapping until he sees the raven
and lets him into his chamber. The speaker begins to talk to the raven and realizes that the bird can only say the word "Nevermore". In the
beginning of the poem the man sees the bird as a burden and wants him gone. However, as the poem goes on the speaker wants the bird there and
begins to alter his questions so that the correct answer will be "Nevermore". As the poem goes on the speaker sees the bird as more of a friend than a
burden and does not want him to leave. For example, it states "But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only That one word, as if his soul

Summary Of Fahrenheit 451
It was a red–stained brick house. An old house with steps in the front, a door on the side, and a rather large white window in the front of the house.
Some days, you can hear pieces of Bach, Chopin, Mozart, and Beethoven playing softly.
Inside the house, it was quite empty. Pure white walls, dark–stained wood flooring, and black furniture. The staircases were wooden and well worn,
complementing the intricacies of the shade around the house. Two men walk into the house.
One of the men was Guy Montag, who nearly a year ago was a fugitive. He had the ironic occupation of being a fireman that led to his demise. A

"Come on, little girl." She looks at him with a smirk, running towards him. Montag gives her a surprised look, just a minute ago she was all hesitant.
"I'm not a little girl Montag, I'm 18," she says seriously.
Montag casts her a small smile, looking towards Faber, and begins to walk faster. Soon, they arrive at the infirmary, only to see Granger. Granger
gives the two newcomers a strange look.
"Who are they?"
"This is Clarisse and Faber, I knew them before the bombing."
L l l l Montag lays Faber down on a makeshift hospital bed and starts tending to his wounds. Clarisse sat down on a chair next to the bed, peering over
at Montag, Faber, and Granger, occasionally. Eventually, Montag finished patching Faber up. He looked like a half

trail up his fragile, old arms and his torso. Faber slowly falls asleep on the bed, a small book falling out of his jacket pocket, the Holy Bible. "Same
Faber as always," muttered Montag, glancing towards Clarisse, who sat there staring into space. "You're still here?" Montag looks at her.
"Yeah." She sits there, fiddling with the corners of her white dress.

TheDevilinDisguise"Even before he reached me, I recognized the aroma baking up from the skin under the suit––the smell of burned matches. The
smell of sulfur. The man in the black suit was the Devil." (King) A common theme among depictions of The Devil is that of unusual physical attributes.
The Devil is depicted in three different stories (Joyce Carol Oates' 'Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?',Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'Young
Goodman Brown', and Steven King's 'The Man In The Black Suit') in three different ways, yet each description bares remarkable similarities in some
aspects to the next. Themes common to the devil are that of his physical appearance or how he presents himself, his apparent supernatural ... Show more

I know your name and all about you, lots of things," Arnold Friend said. He had not moved yet but stood still leaning back against the side of his

know where and how long they're going to be gone, and I know who you were with last night, and your best girl friend's name is Betty. Right?'"
(Oates) This quote shows that he knows everything about Connie. In 'The Man in the Black Suit' The Devil knows all about Gary and his family. He
knows how Gary's brother died. He knows why he died.
Another thing that is universal in these depictions is the Devil's victimology. In each story, his victim is young, naГЇve, and inexperienced. Gary is
only nine years old. A nine–year–old is very gullible and easy to take advantage of. Young Goodman Brown is also naГЇve at least in his belief that all
men and women are what they appear to be. Connie is a young, inexperienced, teenage girl.
The devil can appear in any shape or form. He has been personified throughout history in literary works such as in Joyce Carol Oates' 'Where Are You

What Does The Door Symbolize In The Raven
In a poem titled "The Raven" by the famous Edgar Allan Poe, he tells about a grieving man left alone by his lover named Lenore. The man is in his
quarters reading a book by the fire at midnight trying to escape his reality of living without Lenore. He is beginning to fall asleep when he hears a
"...tapping at [his] chamber door..." (Poe 5). When he hears this tapping, at first he doesn't move. He listens more. Questioning the tapping at such a
late hour, he finally goes to the door and opens it. Peering into the darkness, he closes the door as nothing appeared to be there. Wondering what else
it could be, he walks over to his window. Not sure what else to think, the man believes that it must have been gust of wind from a storm. As soon as he

The grieving man is puzzled by this... he begins asking the raven questions. To every question the same reply comes from the raven, "nevermore" it

that he wanted from the raven, and the same reply every time did not help. Angrily the man continues to ask questions, hoping for an answer of new
meaning. The poem ends with two lines that make us wonder if the reader died. With an ending like this, it leaves the reader with a big question:
what does the raven represent? There is much controversy as to what the raven in the story symbolizes. There are also many opinions on this question
as Poe doesn't give a clear meaning to what the raven is supposed to represent. Some people believe that the bird represents death, some people say that

Anne Frank: The Play, The Franks And The Van Daan
In the events leading up to the rise of the Nazis and the genocide of approximately six million Jews, two Jewish families and an elderly dentist go into
hiding to try to survive persecution. In Anne Frank: The Play, the Franks and the Van Daan's, along with Mr. Dussel, hide for two years in the Secret

intelligent, humble, and sanguine man. He was determined and hopeful to keep his family and friends alive. As the play progresses, Mr. Frank changes
from an optimistic man to a forlorn, pessimistic person. Understandably, under severe circumstances, even the most resilient person can change.
In the play, Mr. Frank is shown to be a person who can be relied on to give a great deal of support and comfort for the group throughout the two

Psalm 34:21 "Affliction will slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned." This bible verse talks about how man has a natural
evil tendency and people who dwell on the will eventually be condemned. All throughout the history of mankind, man has been acting on its evil side.
Man, although naturally evil, has the ability to reason past this and also be good. This is the difference between man and animal. However, in the novel

The book of Job in the Hebrew Bible contains both poetry and prose features in one whole personal account that proposes a universal problem: Why
does God allow the good to suffer? Secondary to this universal problem, the underlying question, implicitly stated by Job in a fit of agony, "You will
seek me, and I shall be gone." (Job, p.200, line 47). More explicitly put, there is an unbridled, significant and dependent relationship between God and
the mankind he created to roam the earth. The book of Job illustrates this necessary relationship between God and man through metaphor and
imagery as a comparison to a hired worker, comparing God to a watcher of man, and repetition of certain phrases. Immediately in chapter 7's
opening, a worn and defeated Job protests his human worth to God in the beginning of a standoff between man and creator. Job is a holy and just
man who might be considered a trophy to God, who describes him to the Accuser as being "like no other on Earth" due to his righteousness. The
display of this "trophy" is a signal that God uses man as a representation of his "best" work and that his work is a reflection of him (which is the case
in other passages in the Bible). This also signifies that there is a sense of trust between mankind and higher powers. The belief between the higher
powers (God and the Accuser) is that it is easier to be righteous in the "right" conditions. The trust that God has with his righteous servant Job (which
represents mankind) is the

The play suggests that the Younger family are very poor African Americans living in Chicago in 1958 , and do not get as much equality as Whites
did during this time. In the beginning of the play, Walter Lee is a selfish man and a large dreamer, although he feels he has no way to achieve his
goal of a high class, luxury life because of how the country is divided up based on race during this time period. Walter is very frustrated and is
talking with Beneatha about the family's problems and questions, "Who the hell told you you had to be a doctor? If you so crazy 'bout messin 'round
with sick people – then go be a nurse like other women – or just get married and be quiet . . .'' (Hansberry 38).Walter's word choice reveals that he is
stereotypical about women. Walter Lee is very selfish, he does not want Benny to have more success than him – he belittles his younger sister.

Who Is Responsible For Othello's Downfall
Othello was once a proud warrior with the love of his life besides him and the trust of his men behind him. All can go so quickly as the man we come
to discover more about transforms from this brave strong man and is reduced to a murderous, jealous, doofus. Othello's tale is that of extradentary
circumstances. Othello striking his wife is the first sign that he has lost sight of the truth and reality as he knew it. The slow spiral down despair.
Everyone could see what just occurred and that did not sway his actions. This is something he would not do under normal circumstances, he strikes her
and storms off very barbarically. This action of his is a complete contradiction to his actions in the second act, in scene 3, where, he was able to subdue
his army mindset and defuse the situation including the duke and Desdemona's father in the meeting. Othello calmly led his wife back to bed, now
things are a bit different and he has become more of a savage in he does not lean on his caring side, he only sees rage now. He barks orders at his wife
and demands things from her. Iago has played the biggest role in his demise by feeding him lies and false evidence of fair play. He has warped the mind

Sociological Perspective Of The Road, By Cormac Mccarthy's...
The Road is a book written by Cormac McCarthy and tells a tale of a father and son who are trying to navigate through a post apocalyptic world
filled with thieves, rapists and cannibals while trying to survive the frigid temperatures and unrelenting climate. I have chosen to analysis The
Road with the sociological critical approach due to the fact that there is an abundance of textual evidence available on the living conditions and
the people in the world. This allows me to break down the book in the most effect way opposed to the other critical approaches. I will start by
looking at the living conditions and the effects it has on The Man and the Boy. Then I will talk about how the state of the world has affected other
members left in the world and lastly I will look at how the people left in this society have played a role on The Man and the Boy.
The first piece I am going to look at for the sociological approach is:
"Maybe he understood for the first time that to the boy he was himself an alien. A being from a planet that no longer existed. The tales of which were
suspect." ()
This quote is spoken by The Man as he tries to tell his son a story of before the apocalypse however it does more to upset the boy and cause a divide
between the Boy and The Man then it does comfort the Boy. This is completely opposite to the society we live in now where stories are used to make
children happy and calm everyday. The divide is noticed by The Man and he comes to the conclusion that

Kaze No Denwa Short Story
Kaze No Denwa
It is April 11, 2011, and one month has passed since the great Japanese tsunami splintered the island. In a small coastal village, a man parks his car
at a distance and walks towards the only object in a large field: Kaze No Denwa, the "Phone of the Wind." Tears begin to well in his eyes as he feels
the gentle breeze wash over him. His shoes crunch the loose gravel underfoot. On this day, there is no–one else around.
In the middle of the field stands a white phone booth. It glows boldly in the bright afternoon sunlight. The man walks along a winding path through
low–cut, manicured underbrush. He reaches the phone booth, slides open the door, and enters. He takes his time, looks around, and finally picks up
the receiver from atop an old–fashioned black rotary phone. He places a finger into a small circle at his desired number, gently spins clockwise,
releases, and repeats nine times. The phone in Kaze No Denwa is connected to nothing; there is no electricity here, no dial tone even, but the man is not
surprised.
"If you can hear me," he says, "please listen carefully."
He stops, looks around the tiny phone box, and sobs, wiping the tears from his eyes with a sleeve.
"Please, let me hear your voice say 'Daddy' again." He covers his eyes with the sleeve and gently whispers, "I'm so sorry I couldn't save you. I will
forever be sorry and shamed." His head falls, his eyes close.
His name is Satsuko. He has travelled far to visit Kaze No Denwa. The great tsunami has brought havoc and, with it, many lives have gone to that
place where spirits reside. Sadness has punctuated the land, and Satsuko is in its midst. His face and demeanour are altered. Kaze No Denwa, the
Phone of the Wind is becoming well–known. Its back–story and sentiment have resonated with the people.
He read about it in a magazine published the year prior; the story of an old man's burning wish, long before the tsunami, to communicate with his
deceased relative. A phone booth was set in the middle of a field tilled by hand and hoe for generations, a place for the old man to air his grief, where
his breath could catch the wind and set out across the field, down the cliff face, and across the vast blue Pacific.
Satsuko moves slowly.

Apocalypse Now Essay
Apocalypse Now is a film produced by Francis Coppola in 1979 about the Vietnam war. The film was based off of the novel, "Heart of Darkness",
and is the story of an Army Captain, Captain Willard, and his mission to hunt down and terminate Colonel Walter Kurtz. The reasoning for sending
Willard to kill one of his fellow Americans is due to the fact that Kurtz has become unstable and has been operating against his orders with the
Montagnard army and committing murder. Kurtz has gone insane during the war and his methods are thought of as unsound and he needs to be taken

command of Kurtz and the sight of dead bodies everywhere and heads of dead men is what the crew sees when pulling up. Before Willard gets off
the boat he orders Chef, one of his crew members, to call in an airstrike on the position if he doesn't come back in time. The natives that are under
command of Kurtz grab Willard and drag him through the mud and throw him in a cage. While Willard is in the cage Kurtz throws Chef's head into
the cage and this shows how the war has turned Kurtz into a monster and is no longer sane. After being around Kurtz for a few days Willard learns
that the war has really affected Kurtz horribly. Kurtz is no longer the man he used to be and has gone completely insane and mad. Eventually, Willard

The Importance Of Happiness In My Life
I believe anyone has the ability to change anyones mood. I believe one person can make me feel awful about myself. I believe one person has the
power to fill me with joy, and laughter. I believe one person can ruin my day with just a couple awful words. I believe one person impacts another.
At a young age I realized how much happiness one person brought me. When I was nine years old I then realized one person can also fill you with
sadness. As I grew up, I was incredibly close to my grandfather, Martin. He took me anywhere I asked him to take me. Our favorite place was a park
near his old house. We'd go to the park to play soccer, and later on at nights we'd lay on the grass looking up at the stars. He filled me with
happiness. I was always laughing when I was around him. When I was nine years old, he passed away. My best friend is gone for good. After
many years, there's still nights where I cry at the thought of never seeing him again. He is a puzzle piece taken from my puzzle. I used to be so
happy around him. Now, that he's gone forever I feel incomplete. I believe one person impacts another. When my mom gets out of work all she
wants is to get home to a clean, floral smelling house. The days she gets home and the house is not clean, she instantly gets angry. There are days
when my brothers, and I get home from school ready to nap. When someone is asleep an hour and a half goes by in a flash. Before we know it, we
hear my mom yelling "WHY ISN'T THE HOUSE CLEAN YET?"

Transformational And Authoritarian Leadership Style
Transformational or Authoritarian Leadership Style
Pamela Walsh
Leadership
Dr. Maureen Nixon
March 9, 2015
Transformational or Authoritarian Leadership Style Over the course of several decades, the depiction of leadership has changed. What was thought to
be innovative and participative or transformational tactic to leadership has replaced the classical and autocratic or authoritarian approach. The step
forward that not everything old is bad and not everything new is good was made somewhere along the way. It was determined that different leadership
styles suited different situations, and it is the responsibility of each leader to figure out when to make use of an individual leadership approach or style.
The two leaders selected for this assignment are Martha Stewart representing an authoritarian leadership style and William Shatner's television
character, James Tiberius Kirk from the starship Enterprise representing a transformational leadership style. Despite some minor similarities, the
differences between Martha Stewart's authoritarian leadership style and William Shatner's transformational leadership style used in the portrayal of
James T. Kirk are strikingly pronounced.
Martha Stewart's Authoritarian Leadership Style
Many have debated that authoritarian leadership is a pessimistic, negative, and discouraging view of others, however Martha Stewart's use of this style
enabled her to flourish in a competitive cutthroat environment.

Compare And Contrast A Good Man Is Hard To Find And Young...
Both "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" and "Young Goodman Brown" contain the themes of the nature of sin and redemption. Each author's religious
background is reflected in their works. In "A Good Man Is Hard to Find", O'Connor tells a story in which the main character, Grandmother, is overly
concerned with how people with perceive her. Hawthorne's writing voices the story of a man, Goodman Brown, who is conflicted with his religion
after seeing everyone around him turn to evil. In both of these stories, we see man struggle with religion, the sin of man, and how decisions can change
our lives forever.
Both authors come from religious backgrounds. Flannery O'Connor, living in the South for most of her life was a devout Catholic. She worked
religion into many if not all of her writing. Even through her challenging battles with lupus, O'Connor still made it to mass on a regular basis. Nathaniel
Hawthorne, who grew up in Salem, Massachusetts, was raised by a strict Puritan family. Hawthorne's original name was "Hathorne", but he added the
"w" to his name to distance himself from family members who were involved in the Salem Witch Trials. Mutually, these authors both incorporated
religion into their works to convey messages to the reader. However, it is believed that Hawthorne was not a practicing Puritan, whereas O'Connor was
firm in her religion.

A Long Way Gone Language Analysis
Approximately 300,000 child soldiers are actively serving in military forces, terrorist organizations, and gangs. In 1993 and at the age of 13, Ishmael
Beah was forced into the same horrendous situation. Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone depicts his own journey of loss, military recruitment, and
rehabilitation. Ishmael Beah uses figurative language to support the theme that the capacity for true evil is present in everyone if they are given apt
incentive.
Ishmael Beah uses metaphors in A Long Way Gone to reinstate the overarching theme that everyone has the capacity for true evil. This is shown in the
story when Ishmael Beah tells the reader about the wild boar story that he was told by his grandmother before the war: "My grandmother once told ...

One quote that describes the villainous nature of men given incentive to execute hideous crimes was "'Do you have any last words to say?' The
old man at this point was unable to speak. His lips trembled, but he couldn't get a word out. The rebel pulled the trigger, and like lightning, I saw
the spark of fire that came from the muzzle" (Beah 33). This simile is used to improve the sentence and show how the people are truly inhumane
in their ways. However, previously in the page, they were described as teenagers around the age of Ishmael, his brother, and their friends. The
Rebel United Front child soldiers were torturous to the old man before they killed him. They were cold and showed no emotion, informing the
reader that they had done this many, many times before. This would never had happen previous to the war in Sierra Leone. This is shown by the
quote, "Before the war a young man wouldn't have dared to talk to anyone older in such a rude manner. We grew up in a culture that demanded
good behaviour from everyone, and especially from the young. Young people were required to respect their elders and everyone in the community"
(Beah 33). This shows how previous to the war children were respectful to all and because of the war, they are able to commit the worst crimes.
Therefore, the young age of these boys and their terrifying savagery shows how anyone is capable of evil. "On other paths of the village were the
half–burnt remains of those who had fought fiercely to free themselves, only to die outside. They lay on the ground in different postures of pain, some
reaching for their heads, the white bones in their jaws visible, others curled up like a child in a womb, frozen" (Beah 94–95). This quote shows the
atrocities that the young children are able to commit because of their horrible circumstances. This is reinforced later

Creative Writing On The Sidewalk
Strolling across a quiet park I find myself stumbling and spilling across the bricks that form the sidewalk. My toe stubbed and throbbing I sit down
at the nearest park bench and look across the green grass, shaded branches of a nearby cedar, or is it a cypress? My gaze returns to the source of my
discomfort. The sidewalk, roughly dollar–bill sized bricks fill an excavated hole so that people won't trip, such bitter irony. Some of the bricks are
split and others are gone, dirt filled most of the gaps, but left a small area to stumble. Despite the minor pain I'm in I am smiling, the sidewalk is

Goodman Brown Allegory
The Allegory and Symbolism of "Young Goodman Brown" "Young Goodman Brown" written in 1835, is a religious allegory written by Nathaniel
Hawthorne. The story takes place around the 17th century in Salem village and sets in the forest. Hawthorne uses symbolism and allegory to make a
point about Puritans. Goodman Brown is a Puritan with strong faith, but the devil overpowers him by showing him the people he trusted have fallen
into evil including his wife. Hawthorne uses allegory and symbolism throughout the story conveying a message behind the evilness in puritanism,
showing that Goodman Brown himself, having a strong faith in God, falls into evil.
Hawthorne begins the story speaking of Goodman Brown leaving Faith, his wife, to a journey setting into the forest at dark. Hawthorne says "And
Faith as the wife was aptly named..." (p.102). Faith is an allegory that Hawthorne uses throughout the story, referring to his wife, Faith, and his own
faith. Faith tries her best to persuade Goodman Brown to stay. Goodman Brown continues on to his journey into the forest, which symbolizes the
path of evil. "He had taken a dreary, darkened road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path
creep though, and closed immediately behind it."(p.103). The words "dark" and "creep" are words that Hawthorn uses to give the readers clues of the
forest representing a path of evil.
As Goodman Brown walks through the dark forest, Hawthorn gives readers another clue of symbolism before a man, the devil, appears beside
him. "What if the devil himself should appear at my very elbow."(p.104). The moment Goodman brown says it, a man approaches him and walks
along side him. Hawthorne shows us the allegory used here, he is not only a man, but also a devil along side Goodman Brown. The man, tells
Goodman Brown he is late. Brown answered "Faith kept me back awhile,"(104). Hawthorne is referring to his own faith. Goodman brown's strong
faith was pulling Goodman Brown from following the path of evil. Following the devil, Goodman does not want to go any further claiming his father
and grandfather never have done so. " I have been well acquainted with you family as with ever a one among the

Apollo Motivation
In researching the space explorations Apollo missions, I found it very interesting and fun to learn about what the motivation was at the time to drive
them to put a man on the moon. During the 1950's and 1960's "scientific research was becoming a big business."(1) This meant that there was some
tension between scientist and those that would be working with NASA and the exploration of the moon.
The main motivation was driven from the President John F. Kennedy. During this time there was a struggle for power in the world. Russia was a

Treatment Of Women In The Odyssey

supernatural beings, and the mistreatment of women. Many believe that women have been overlooked and disrespected in this world for years. The
irrelevance of these women was a part of the Greek life. In the epic poem, "The Odyssey" by Homer, Penelope becomes a different person when she is
brought into a time where women are taken control of more than anyone else in the Greek world. During this epic story, Penelope becomes a person

egocentric she doesn't care about anything nor anybody else than herself. All that ambition and arrogance, leads her to marry men that she has no
feelings for (Gone with the Wind). One of those men, Frank Kennedy, was the lover of her sister. Scarlett married Frank Kennedy because she needed
to save her land and because of the promise she made herself after the war ended which was that she will... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scarlett goes through many things to get what she wants. She has no care in the world for other but herself, and therefore in the end after realizing that
what she felt for Ashley wasn't true, she loses the man she truly loved. Gone with the Wind, also displays the life of the South during the American
Civil War, but more importantly it gives the viewer the opportunity to relate to Scarlett. That is because Fleming displays situations that can happen
like making drastic decisions to obtain what one wants, and that one sometimes realizes the true value of what one has after it is all

The Return by Ngugi Wa Thiong’o
The Return Ngugi Wa Thiong'o The Return is story about Kamau, a man returning home after spending many years away in prison. Kamau has
both survived the Mau Mau and being put in prison. The Mau Mau had cost many Black Nationalist's lives, and had seen many more put away in
jails. The story begins as Kamau is released from jail. Several indicators are given about Kamau's health, which begins with the description of his
back as "slightly drooping" in paragraph two. The reader understands that time away in prison wasn't easy for Kamau. The reader also is shown that
Kamau's features are hardened by the years spend away. He makes it to the river and meets a woman whose deaf son had been killed, but is not
greeted in the manner to what he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These were contemplations that Kamau never perhaps thought of in the confinement of prison. The people he knew before the arrest were
grown, gone or dead. Kamau sees his father but is once again refused the proper greeting. His father at first does not answer Kamau when he
arrives. After moments Kamau finally is given the embracement of his family. He understood only after he had been told that it was assumed that
he had been dead all these years. When Kamau asks about Muthoni, he perhaps wished he was. Karanja had not only told his family that he was
dead, he had also stolen the love of Kamau away. I believe that at this point of the story the reader is shown this sin by Karanja to show that
enemies reside on both side of the war line. Karanja would prove a much more torturous blow to Kamau than any Wazungu could ever deal.
Finally we see a pinnacle of the heartache that Kamau had been successful at keeping away for the past five years in prison. He had manage to
keep a flickering light of hope alive in the darkest of places. The emotion and pain had caught up to him. The regret of what he had done had finally
come knocking. Kamau is overcome and runs to the river. At the river Kamau sees his little belongings floating away. He understands that this is an
exact symbol of what his day had been. He had watched all he knew and cherished float away moment by moment. Thoughts of suicide are gone.
Kamau is the picture of war. No matter what the

The Complex Crime Fiction of Dennis Lehane

  • 1. The Vanishing Hitchhiker Essay The Tale of the Vanishing Hitchhiker The legend of the Vanishing Hitchhiker has been evolving over many years as every town has a slightly different tale to tell, but the gist of these tales have remained the same."A man picks up a young woman hitchhiking and when he turns to bid his unusual hitchhiker goodbye he discovers that she has mysteriously disappeared from the car. He later learns that his mysterious passenger had died several years earlier"("The Vanishing Hitchhiker"). Even though some believe that they have witnessed a being from the beyond communicating with them, folklorist David Mikkelson proved them wrong once he came to realize. This backcountry lore of a young ladies vanishing without a trace from vehicles started to spread like wildfire through many social media sites and local newspapers because the lore is just a hoax that has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All they have to study is the accounts of others. "The appeal of vanishing hitchhiker lies in the nature of the encounter an interaction with a ghost that occurs not because the main character went looking for the supernatural, but because it came to him. Such tales underscore the belief that representatives from the spirit world can be encountered at any time and by anyone. Adding to the horror factor is the specter's passing for a living person. That the driver does not recognize it as a ghost during their time together makes it all that more easy to believe we won't recognize a ghost when we meet one, either."("The Vanishing Hitchhiker"). The many recorded vanishing hitchhiker sightings all have one thing in common, the fact that it always seen by one who is not searching for the lore. With countless folklorists going out in search of these beings and them all coming up empty, has convinced many of them that the lore is false, only to have been cultivated and nurtured by newspapers and social ... Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been By Joyce Carol Oates "I took a special interest in you, such a pretty girl, and found out all about you, like I know your parents and sister are gone somewhere and I know where and how long they are going to be gone, and I know who you were with last night, and your best girlfriend's name is Betty. • 5. Essay on Gone Baby Gone Gone Baby Gone Dennis Lehane writes satisfyingly complex and disturbingly violent crime fiction that often crosses into thriller territory. These are not, however, cheap thrills. Even in their goriest moments, his books are grounded in rich, real–life detail. Lehane knows Boston and its denizens, and he captures the city's subcultures beautifully –– from the hushed refinement of the old–money suburbs to the grittiness of tacky motels and bail–bond agencies. He has a unique way of presenting his mysteries with an edge–of–the–seat feeling, yet his descriptive methods brings one into his neighborhoods and gives one the feeling that they lived there their entire life. Would it make Cheese mad enough to take Amanda rather than take it out on Helene? The title of the book comes from a warning Cheese gives Patrick, "Without me, that girl will be gone. Gone–gone. You understand? Gone, baby, gone." (p. 239) Reading it, it makes you think Cheese has Amanda and is toying with our protagonists. But as Cheese says himself a little later, "Whatever you think happened, you're not even in the ballpark. You guys are so offtrack, you might as well be in mother*censored*ing Greenland. Okay?" (p. 241) And Cheese is right; all leads are drawing a dead–end. A year passes and Amanda stays gone, vanished, like she never existed. Another child is reported missing. Angie stayed obsessed with Amanda's disappearance even though no new leads were given. She pored over their case files; desperately searching for something they missed. • 8. Our Treatment Of Nature By Daniel Quinn In regards to our treatment of nature, you write, "Today, however, the population has grown to the point that nature itself is threatened but we have no ethical tools with which to protect and defend nature." This problem has existed for quite some time, but has just not began to go widely noticed. A philosopher in his own right, Daniel Quinn, speaks of similar topics using his character, Ishmael, to do so. To best describe this scenario, Ishmael had a poster which read, "With man gone, will there be hope for gorilla?" this quote in itself hold little meaning until you take the deeper meaning by using gorilla as nature; Quinn speaks throughout the book of how earth was not created for man, man is just one more short portion of earth's history and will be seen as such when times change. The meaning of this quote then becomes, will earth have any hope if man dies? This interpretation requires the assumption that man controls nature, he takes care of it, rather than being a part of it and respecting it. At the conclusion of the book, Quinn shows the other side of the poster which held the quote and it reads, "with gorilla gone, will there be hope for man?" Again, once realizing gorilla is a euphemism for nature, we realize nature what Quinn has been preaching the entire book, man does not control nature, nature was not created for man, but man is slowly killing it. On your statement, saying the population is too great for nature to sustain everyone, I completely agree. Too ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People have come up with these theories involving the road that they spent so long walking alone, the woman, boy and man in the novel, and the whole idea of the world ending. The setting takes place in an apocalyptic future where a road is no longer a means to get from one place to another, but is a remembrance of the past. The roads are one of the few things that couldn't be destroyed by whatever disaster destroyed the earth, and the father and son spent most of their time on a road leading to the coast. Analysis Of The Journey Along The Road By Cormac Mccarthy The sun no longer shines as bright, the planet is getting colder by day, food stopped growing, ashes falling from the sky, a father and son are on a mission to survive. During the journey along The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, the symbol of light and warmth contrasts this dark and scary place; however the boy and the man are shown in the light and represent the good still on the world; humanity looks for the good in the world of bad because it 's the key to their survival. This is also shown throughout The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. Both texts use nature to discuss how we face the harsh times in our life. Each of the texts shows a way that a person copes with the harsh times in their life while using nature. However the mother is coping with them while still protecting her children after they have died, This is the mother's way of coping because she is not yet ready to let go of her children and still wants to care for them. This poem shows this through nature by portraying the mother as a bird who is protecting her nest. Also the poem uses nature by describing the harsh times as a winter wind that has caused harm to the mother and her children. The poem The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe shows a man coping with harsh times with the help of the raven. The poem begins with the man alone where he hears something tapping on his door. He continues to hear the tapping until he sees the raven and lets him into his chamber. The speaker begins to talk to the raven and realizes that the bird can only say the word "Nevermore". In the beginning of the poem the man sees the bird as a burden and wants him gone. However, as the poem goes on the speaker wants the bird there and begins to alter his questions so that the correct answer will be "Nevermore". As the poem goes on the speaker sees the bird as more of a friend than a burden and does not want him to leave. • 19. Analysis Of The Book ' Job Of The Hebrew Bible ' Essay The book of Job in the Hebrew Bible contains both poetry and prose features in one whole personal account that proposes a universal problem: Why does God allow the good to suffer? Secondary to this universal problem, the underlying question, implicitly stated by Job in a fit of agony, "You will seek me, and I shall be gone." (Job, p.200, line 47). More explicitly put, there is an unbridled, significant and dependent relationship between God and the mankind he created to roam the earth. The book of Job illustrates this necessary relationship between God and man through metaphor and imagery as a comparison to a hired worker, comparing God to a watcher of man, and repetition of certain phrases. Immediately in chapter 7's opening, a worn and defeated Job protests his human worth to God in the beginning of a standoff between man and creator. Job is a holy and just man who might be considered a trophy to God, who describes him to the Accuser as being "like no other on Earth" due to his righteousness. The display of this "trophy" is a signal that God uses man as a representation of his "best" work and that his work is a reflection of him (which is the case in other passages in the Bible). This also signifies that there is a sense of trust between mankind and higher powers. The belief between the higher powers (God and the Accuser) is that it is easier to be righteous in the "right" conditions. The trust that God has with his righteous servant Job (which represents mankind) is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have chosen to analysis The Road with the sociological critical approach due to the fact that there is an abundance of textual evidence available on the living conditions and the people in the world. This allows me to break down the book in the most effect way opposed to the other critical approaches. I will start by looking at the living conditions and the effects it has on The Man and the Boy. Then I will talk about how the state of the world has affected other members left in the world and lastly I will look at how the people left in this society have played a role on The Man and the Boy. The first piece I am going to look at for the sociological approach is: "Maybe he understood for the first time that to the boy he was himself an alien. A being from a planet that no longer existed. The tales of which were suspect." () This quote is spoken by The Man as he tries to tell his son a story of before the apocalypse however it does more to upset the boy and cause a divide between the Boy and The Man then it does comfort the Boy. In a small coastal village, a man parks his car at a distance and walks towards the only object in a large field: Kaze No Denwa, the "Phone of the Wind." Tears begin to well in his eyes as he feels the gentle breeze wash over him. His shoes crunch the loose gravel underfoot. On this day, there is no–one else around. In the middle of the field stands a white phone booth. It glows boldly in the bright afternoon sunlight. The man walks along a winding path through low–cut, manicured underbrush. He reaches the phone booth, slides open the door, and enters. He takes his time, looks around, and finally picks up the receiver from atop an old–fashioned black rotary phone. He places a finger into a small circle at his desired number, gently spins clockwise, releases, and repeats nine times. The phone in Kaze No Denwa is connected to nothing; there is no electricity here, no dial tone even, but the man is not surprised. "If you can hear me," he says, "please listen carefully." He stops, looks around the tiny phone box, and sobs, wiping the tears from his eyes with a sleeve. "Please, let me hear your voice say 'Daddy' again." He covers his eyes with the sleeve and gently whispers, "I'm so sorry I couldn't save you. I will forever be sorry and shamed." His head falls, his eyes close. His name is Satsuko. Flannery O'Connor, living in the South for most of her life was a devout Catholic. She worked religion into many if not all of her writing. Even through her challenging battles with lupus, O'Connor still made it to mass on a regular basis. Nathaniel Hawthorne, who grew up in Salem, Massachusetts, was raised by a strict Puritan family. Hawthorne's original name was "Hathorne", but he added the "w" to his name to distance himself from family members who were involved in the Salem Witch Trials. Mutually, these authors both incorporated religion into their works to convey messages to the reader. However, it is believed that Hawthorne was not a practicing Puritan, whereas O'Connor was firm in her religion. • 29. A Long Way Gone Language Analysis Approximately 300,000 child soldiers are actively serving in military forces, terrorist organizations, and gangs. In 1993 and at the age of 13, Ishmael Beah was forced into the same horrendous situation. Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone depicts his own journey of loss, military recruitment, and rehabilitation. Ishmael Beah uses figurative language to support the theme that the capacity for true evil is present in everyone if they are given apt incentive. Ishmael Beah uses metaphors in A Long Way Gone to reinstate the overarching theme that everyone has the capacity for true evil. This is shown in the story when Ishmael Beah tells the reader about the wild boar story that he was told by his grandmother before the war: "My grandmother once told ... The old man at this point was unable to speak. His lips trembled, but he couldn't get a word out. This simile is used to improve the sentence and show how the people are truly inhumane in their ways. However, previously in the page, they were described as teenagers around the age of Ishmael, his brother, and their friends. The Rebel United Front child soldiers were torturous to the old man before they killed him. They were cold and showed no emotion, informing the reader that they had done this many, many times before. This would never had happen previous to the war in Sierra Leone. This is shown by the quote, "Before the war a young man wouldn't have dared to talk to anyone older in such a rude manner. We grew up in a culture that demanded good behaviour from everyone, and especially from the young. Young people were required to respect their elders and everyone in the community" (Beah 33). This shows how previous to the war children were respectful to all and because of the war, they are able to commit the worst crimes. Therefore, the young age of these boys and their terrifying savagery shows how anyone is capable of evil. "On other paths of the village were the half–burnt remains of those who had fought fiercely to free themselves, only to die outside. They lay on the ground in different postures of pain, some reaching for their heads, the white bones in their jaws visible, others curled up like a child in a womb, frozen" (Beah 94–95). This quote shows the atrocities that the young children are able to commit because of their horrible circumstances. This is reinforced later ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My toe stubbed and throbbing I sit down at the nearest park bench and look across the green grass, shaded branches of a nearby cedar, or is it a cypress? My gaze returns to the source of my discomfort. The sidewalk, roughly dollar–bill sized bricks fill an excavated hole so that people won't trip, such bitter irony. Some of the bricks are split and others are gone, dirt filled most of the gaps, but left a small area to stumble. Despite the minor pain I'm in I am smiling, the sidewalk is so...FAMILIAR. • 32. Goodman Brown Allegory The Allegory and Symbolism of "Young Goodman Brown" "Young Goodman Brown" written in 1835, is a religious allegory written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The story takes place around the 17th century in Salem village and sets in the forest. Hawthorne uses symbolism and allegory to make a point about Puritans. Goodman Brown is a Puritan with strong faith, but the devil overpowers him by showing him the people he trusted have fallen into evil including his wife. Hawthorne uses allegory and symbolism throughout the story conveying a message behind the evilness in puritanism, showing that Goodman Brown himself, having a strong faith in God, falls into evil. Hawthorne begins the story speaking of Goodman Brown leaving Faith, his wife, to a journey setting into the forest at dark. Hawthorne says "And Faith as the wife was aptly named..." (p.102). Faith is an allegory that Hawthorne uses throughout the story, referring to his wife, Faith, and his own faith. Faith tries her best to persuade Goodman Brown to stay. Goodman Brown continues on to his journey into the forest, which symbolizes the path of evil. "He had taken a dreary, darkened road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep though, and closed immediately behind it."(p.103). The words "dark" and "creep" are words that Hawthorn uses to give the readers clues of the forest representing a path of evil. As Goodman Brown walks through the dark forest, Hawthorn gives readers another clue of symbolism before a man, the devil, appears beside him. "What if the devil himself should appear at my very elbow."(p.104). The moment Goodman brown says it, a man approaches him and walks along side him. Hawthorne shows us the allegory used here, he is not only a man, but also a devil along side Goodman Brown. The man, tells Goodman Brown he is late. Brown answered "Faith kept me back awhile,"(104). Hawthorne is referring to his own faith. Goodman brown's strong faith was pulling Goodman Brown from following the path of evil. Following the devil, Goodman does not want to go any further claiming his father and grandfather never have done so. " I have been well acquainted with you family as with ever a one among the ... The main motivation was driven from the President John F. Kennedy. During this time there was a struggle for power in the world. One of the best films created and the winner of many academy awards is known as Gone with the Wind directed by, Victor Fleming. Fleming's, Gone with the Wind tells the romantic yet tragic story of Scarlett O'Hara, the protagonist, and Rhett Butler, while at the same time giving a depiction of the life in the South, before, during, and after the American Civil War. The film, moreover, shows how much someone is willing to do in order to obtain what she wants, and how sometimes it's too late to realize what one has. The film, Gone with the Wind presents a character that can be seen in many people, Scarlett O'Hara. Scarlett is an ambitious young lady that does anything to be successful and be as wealthy as she can be. Scarlett, moreover, is very egocentric she doesn't care about anything nor anybody else than herself. All that ambition and arrogance, leads her to marry men that she has no feelings for (Gone with the Wind). One of those men, Frank Kennedy, was the lover of her sister.
