How Is Croy Treated Unfairly
Tony Serra believed Croy was treated unfairly because of his Native American culture. He believed
that the unfair treatment could have been traced back to how Natives were treated in the past. His
defense is explained in, "So the heart of Serra's case was what he called a 'cultural defense', a parade
of Indian scholars, activists and residents of Siskyou County who testified that pioneer brutality did
not die out in Northern California with the last Indian campaign, the bloody Modoc war of the
1870's (which ended with the tribe's near–obliteration and the execution of its leaders, whose heads
were then shipped to the Smithsonian for 'scientific investigation')" (Tabolt 32). Serra chose to
defend Croy in a way that highlighted the real reasons

Loss of a Predator: the Gray Wolf Vs. California Essay...
California's last solitary wolf was reportedly killed in 1924 in Lassen County. Once a widely
distributed species throughout the Pacific Northwest, the settlement of European Americans brought
the eradication of the Gray wolf from California.
Bounties on wolves had been established in Europe dating back to ancient Greece, so consequently
European settlers came to America with this plan in mind. An early Plymouth Colony established a
fine from "whoever shall shoot off a gun on an unnecessary occasion, or at any game except at an
Indian or a wolf" (Hampton 63). Settlers believed that wolves were the embodiment of evil –
endangering human life and well being, killing livestock, and depleting game animals. The
government placed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Large carcasses provided food for many animals from eagles and bears to beetles and microscopic
organisms that break meat down, eventually creating fertilizer for plants.
The absence of wolves has allowed for smaller predators to increase in population and range, such
as coyotes and raccoons. These species in turn cause greater exploitation of their specific food
sources. Coyotes have now assumed the position of top predator in California, making populations
of foxes dwindle as they compete for the similar food sources.
The chain of events is continuous once a high order predator is eliminated. Reintroducing wolves
into California may help restore the balance and diversity of plants and animals in our ecosystem.
However, the return of wolves would not be without problems. California is very different now from
the environment it once was when wolves lived here. They would have to contend with the growing
human population, development, and livestock industries. Politics and public opinion might also be
against them.
Even though the wolf does not play a big part in California's mainstream society today, it was once
an important animal to many Native American groups. The fact that the natives had words for wolf
shows how widespread California wolves were historically. Almost all of the 80 different languages
spoken in California at the time of European arrival had different words for wolf, coyote, fox, and
dog. The Wiyot in Humboldt Bay had

Essay On Native American Tribal Music
Music is one of the most influential parts of cultures all over the world, but to the Native Americans
it is pivotal. Native American tribal music is a very important part of most Native Americans'
history, culture, and societies.
Music is an extremely important role of Native American culture and history. Generally, it was one
of the only methods that they had as a way to pass down traditions and their history from generation
to generation. There wasn't very much documentation of their history until validation from English
settlers, other than some archeological evidence of musical instruments and depictions of music that
have been dated as far back as the 7th Century. There were typically two types of songs that the
tribes would pass down, and they would be either public songs or private songs. Public songs were
often historical, and could be retold into many different versions which often gave the songs
different meanings. But the private songs were unchanged through the history and kept those tribes'
history/culture intact forever. There were primarily six different areas of music in the United States
where different tribes resided. The main characteristics of all of these diverse areas were that they
were based on singing and percussion. The vocalization of these tribes range from solos, chorales,
unison, and multipart singing. Percussion was also very common, and the use of drums and rattles
were used to keep a steady beat for singers. Flutes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In their societies, music is used for worship, work, entertainment, expressing grief, or gaining
strength. Many of their ceremonies and stories verbally allowed for ancient customs to be passed
down to later generations. The Native Americans believed that their ceremonial music was
originated from spirits or very respected individuals. They often performed rituals which was a
major part in their culture and their beliefs through singing, dancing, and

Captain Jack Persuasive Speech
Greetings Captain Jack and my fellow Modocs, today I would like to speak to you on behalf of the
government's proposal. As you probably know, the government has given us the choice to
voluntarily move to the reservation or go to war over our land. If we choose to fight, we will most
likely be slaughtered. Even if we somehow manage to survive, trading with white settlers will come
to a halt, and they will most likely attack us again. On the other hand, if we choose to move to the
reservation, we will face our old age rivals, the Klamaths, who with no doubt, will attempt to attack
us. Some of our men's lives will most likely be taken with these attacks. With our movement would
also be a loss of land. Land that our ancestors have lived on for hundreds of years, but this isn't

The Nez Perce, on the other hand, tried to seek Sitting Bull's advice when they were told they would
be relocated to Wallowa Valley. On their journey they were overcome by U.S. forces, who sent them
to a malaria infected camp in Kansas. Nearly ⅓ of the tribe died there and the rest were sent to
Wallowa Valley, where they would have ended up if they chose not to fight, with only a fraction of a
once–strong tribe.

was not signed by their Chief or the majority, but was still ratified by the U.S. senate. This "treaty"

the reserve, 4,000 of their people lay dead. We must be cautious we are not the next victims of the

Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee Summary
Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee describes the challenges and trials the Native Americans faced
against the United States government. Brown describes the brutal murders between the United
States government and the Native Americans. The attempts at peace were overpowered by the lies
and betrayal. The United States government wanted to place the Native Americans in a desolate
location of their choosing. These locations were called "reservations." The Indians were not happy
about being exiled to a certain location. The Indians wanted freedom to roam the land as they
please. The Delshay of the Tonto Apaches made a grave statement about having freedom of the land,
"God made the white man and God made the Apache, and the Apache has just as much right to the
country as the white man. I want to make a treaty that will last, so that both can travel over the
country and have no trouble." (213) Just like the Tonto Apaches, Cochise wanted peace with the US

This group was a friendly, sturdy tribe. Just like the other Indian tribes, the Poncas wanted peace
with the whites. When the government officials were setting up boundaries for the different tribes,
the Poncas generously gave the government a portion of their land in exchange for protection of
their persons, property, and permanent home. After ten years the treaty makers began making a
treaty with the Sioux. The treaty was a territory reassignment in which the Poncas land was
included. The Poncas relentlessly protested to Washington. Despite their treaty with the government,
the Sioux began attacking the Poncas land and threatening the Poncas. After seven years of the
Poncas being forced to work in gardens and cornfields, the government finally acknowledged their
treaty with the Poncas. The governemtn was expected to restore the land to the Poncas, but instead
the Poncas were given a small amount of money to make up for their losses.

Comparing Earth On The Turtle's Back And When Grizzlies...
The origin myths The Earth on the Turtle's Back and When Grizzlies Walked Upright have story
details that are similar, yet also very different. The Onondaga and Modoc cultures both respect the
Sky Spirit, and believe that the Sky Spirit controlled everything on Earth. A recurring moral in both
myths is that everything happens for a reason. In The Earth on the Turtle's Back, if the Ancient
Chief's wife had never had a dream about the tree being uprooted, Earth would have never been
discovered. In When Grizzlies Walked Upright, if the daughter never poked her head out over the
top of the mountain, grizzly bears would be able to talk and walk on two legs. While both myths
have a few similar morals, the two stories also have very different morals

Graduation Speech Essay
WOW! So much has happened since June. The SV FFA and ag department had a rough start to our
year losing three of our students who were on the FFA officer team to other schools. Even with this
bump in the road, the four officers that remained visited Mt. Shasta City and had a blast bonding
and learning more about each other at their officer retreat in August. Once school started we found
three new officers and attended COLC (Chapter Officer Leadership Conference) where the entire
team learned about their diverse leadership styles and were able to bond together as the official

The Last Report On The Miracles By Louise Erdrich Summary
Louise Erdrich Louise Erdrich was born on June 7, 1954 in Little Falls, Minnesota. She grew up in
Wahpeton North Dakota near Turtle Mountain reservation, where her grandfather Pat Tourneau was
a Tribal chairman. Erdrich uses characters not only to demonstrate the experiences of Native
Americans, but also the heartache and pain she has gone through in her life. Erdrich's family was far
from normal, they faced many obstacles, but unfortunately they were not able to overcome them.
"In 1981 she married Michael Dorris, a professor of anthropology and head of the Native American
studies program at Dartmouth" (Andrews, McCarthy). Louise met Michael upon her return to

Miracles at Little No Horse Erdrich introduces the readers to one of many examples of alcoholism.
"Then six grasshopper years occurred during which even the handles on the hoes and rakes were

(Erdrich). Erdrich uses a character in her book that seems to be in pain due to her circumstances. "It
was as though her soul were neatly removed by a drinking straw and siphoned into the green pool of
quiet that lay beneath the rippling cascade of notes" (Erdrich). This character also seems resolute to
use music as a way to cope with her emotions, just as Louise uses writing as a way to share her
stories and escape the reality of life sometimes. "At the piano keyboard, absorbed into the notes that
rose beneath her hands, she existed in her essence" (Erdrich). The character felt as though she meant

Analysis Of The Earth On Turtle's Back: A Creation Myth
"The Earth on Turtle's Back" is a creation myth retold by Micheal Caduto and Joseph Bruchac. The
myth suggests that a muskrat 'created' the Earth by pulling it up out of the depths of the waters.
Similarly, "When the Grizzlies Walked Upright" is also a creation myth retold by Richard Erodes
and Alfonso Ortiz. This myth explains that the first Indians were created from a union between the
grizzly bear and Sky Spirit. Although the myths reveal that the Onondaga and the Modoc both
believe that there is a higher power, each tribe has different views on how their Sky Chief is.
Both the Onondaga and the Modoc believe that there is a higher power, otherwise known as the Sky
Chief. For example, in "The Earth on Turtle's Back", as we are learning about the Skyland and how
things looked the narrator states, "There was an ancient Chief in Skyland." (page 22) This quote

As page 22 states, "I am sad that you had this dream. It is clearly a dream of great power... we must

selfless. He wants to make sure his wife's dream comes true no matter what the cost. In contrast, the
Modoc believe that their Sky Chief is unforgiving and selfish. As page 24 states, "A new race had
been created that was not of his making... frowned on the old grandmother...he cursed all the
grizzlies...You have wronged me, and from this moment all of you will walk on four feet and never
talk again." This shows how the Sky Chief got so angry that a new race was created that was not his
own, which showed that he was selfish because he wanted everything to be created by him. He is
shown as unforgiving because he made it to where the grizzlies will never be able to talk or walk on

Indians By The Golden Gate Analysis
Ricon Annex: Indians by the Golden Gate Anton Refregier was well known for his artistry due to
the simple fact that all his work represented "meaningful, significant, powerful plastic statement
based on the history and lives of the people." This simple concept is why his beautiful and powerful
murals have influenced artists for generations. The murals within the Ricon Annex illustrated how
Anton was able to atest to his principles and showcase the history of California as well as the
struggles that accomponied the devlopment of this amazing state. The murals, some noted as
controversioal, also displayed the negative moments throughout the history of the state. Specifically,
the mural Indians by the Gate acts as a reminder of all the natives who los their lives due to

The effort put in the creation of the mural can be immeditley be conveyed by the precise details of
all three natives on the boat. Furthermore, Anton's style of simplicity by primarly painting in a one–
dmesional plane, and using shadows and volumes with colors such as yellow, brown, gray, white,
and red to evoke emotions is very apparent in this mural. Rather than focusing on the mural itself,
the viewer is forced to anaylze the subject matter. In this mural the matter revolves around the death
of almost 250,000 natives due to "general mistreatment, massacere, disiese, disposesssion, and other
indigitinieites." The mistreatment of natives throughout American history has always been
problemtic. This mural once again remids indivudals how the land we are standing on was once

Haunted America by Patricia Nelson
Why acknowledge history? The solution is because we essentially must to achieve access to the
laboratory of human involvement. In the essay "Haunted America", Patricia Nelson takes a truly
various and remarkably gallant stance on United States history. Through the recounting of the
White/Modoc war in "Haunted America," she brings to light the complexity and confusion of the
White/Indian conflicts that is often missing in much of the history we read. Her account of the war,
with the faults of both Whites and Indians revealed, is an unusual alternative to the stereotypical
"Whites were good; Indians were bad" or the reverse stand point that "Indians were good; Whites
were bad" conclusions that many historians reach. Limerick argues that a very brutal and bloody era
has been simplified and romanticized, reducing the lives and deaths of hundreds to the telling of an
uncomplicated story of "Good Guys" and "Bad Guys". Additionally, Limerick lays forth a challenge
to the "cheerful remarks about how the understanding of history will help us to understand ourselves
and to cope with the dilemmas we have inherited from the past" (412); this challenge is to find out
what. By remembering these stories in their full intensity and completeness, what do we gain
besides a revival and restoration of the misery? The following paragraphs will clarify what is
missing in much of our history and why it is a problem; they will also address the challenge put
forth of what we can possibly learn

Heart at Wounded Knee is written by Dee Brown and depicts the life of many American Indians in
the late 1800s. There is very little recognition of the real impact of Native Americans hardships that
happened because of government policies being implemented upon them and the feeling of WASP
(White Anglo–Saxton Protestant) superiority. The two different ways of life were causing many
battles, massacres, and injuries from people on both sides of the fight for land. The Indians were
being kicked off of their land, that had been inhabited by the ancestors of their tribes for hundreds of
years, and being forced onto reservations that lacked the things they were ... Show more content on

This allows the Indians power with numbers at a big win against General Custer at Little Bighorn.
(299) Afterwards, the government justifies the deaths in that battle as the reason why the land will
be given to the government and the Native Americans are given no choice, but to surrender,
excluding Sitting Bull, pack leader, and a small portion of his people who escape to Canada. (310)
They are able to now feel like even if they win a battle and get enough people to join their army the
will never be truly allowed to win the land. The Nez Percés people are then told to give up their land
and settle in a reservation after loosing battles to the Bluecoats. (312) The surrounding policy
changes in the times are part of the reason as to why this major civil war was being overshadowed
in 1877. (315) The white settlers are able to act with very little notice being given due to the amount
of "larger" conflicts that were developing in the start of the nation. The Poncas are the next tribe that
is played out, and they are considered to be peaceful. However, they are sent to Indian territories
with groups that are considered hostile and that result in the demise and deaths. A member states, "It
makes my heart feel sad as I do not know this land."

Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee Essay
The book Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee was written by Dee Brown. Dee Brown wrote a handful
of books and the central theme around those books were tales of Native Americans and civil war
stories. He spent a long time studying different tribes all around the United States. He has brought
out the voice of the Native Americans which was muffled and silenced by the army and government.
This book brought much awareness to a cause many had forgotten about, and to the shock of many
when they realized he was not a Native American. Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee tells the stories
of many Native American tribes and their hardships when facing the government, army, and settlers.
While reading this book, I came to quite a shock. I learned the point of view that was hidden in
history books, the loss instead of the win, and the sadness felt throughout the book that made it
unpleasant to read. I believe this book has brought to light the mistreatment of Native Americans in
the past, the main hardships including countless false treaties, harsh treatments from the settlers, and
the unjust massacres. I found this book to be quite a difficult read but incredibly worth it. It is
written in such a manner that you feel immersed, you feel the all the emotions and imagine how
everything came to be. It is figurative, but also incredibly factual. In the beginning of almost every
chapter, before the actual start, there is small paragraph with the year and the events in that

A Yellow Raft in Blue Water by Michael Dorris
While growing up Michael Dorris never encountered a Native American literary character that he
could relate too, and being of Modoc Tribe of California descent, this was something that was very
important to him. After graduating from Georgetown University, and earning a Master's Degree at
Yale, Dorris began to create these characters and ideas that he had longed for himself during
childhood. He married his literary partner, Louise Erdrich, who was also of Native American
descent. They had three children together, plus the three that Dorris had adopted, all of which were
born on Native American reservations. All three of his adopted children suffered from fetal alcohol
syndrome. During a twenty year period before Dorris' death, he published fourteen books and over
one hundred articles. In 1987 he published his first novel "A Yellow Raft in Blue Water." "A Yellow
Raft in Blue Water" is divided into three sections narrated by three different Native American
women: Rayona, Christine and Ida. All three of these women are all related. Rayona is the daughter
of Christine, and Christine believes she is the daughter of Ida, but Ida is actually her half–sister and
cousin. All three sections were a part of a larger story; they all helped support or complete each
other. The structure of this novel forces us as readers to be more active. It causes us to look more
closely, and fit together the stories of the three women. When the ladies' are explaining the same

The American Dream By James Madison
Parth Patel Honors English III 2nd Hour 4/27/16 James Madison stated "That part of America which
had encouraged them most had advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the art." This
means that if our American goal is to do something, we will not only do that task, we will be the
best in the world at it. Also we went out west because we were encouraged to go west, not that we
had to.This represents the path we took to settle the west. We went out west first to get the gold and
then we would build railroad and then cities would emerge. The American dream is always
changing for different people in different times. The American dream during this time period was to
get control of all the land out west and unite it. We would be settling the west for many years but it
shows our American Dream in settling the west was to make the west advanced as the east. People
who moved and settled western lands were motivated to do so for the many reasons. Many people
believed that you go west to get a new and better life. The west was filled with opportunities like the
abundance of land. This land was sold cheap to farmers who would take care for it and a positive
was that no one farmed and used up all the nutrients in the soil. There was also opportunities to hunt
for buffalo and make money by selling the hide and meat. With the demand on meat in the growing
eastern cities, people also moved west to raise cattle. With the declining rates of the buffalo it would

What Does The Earth On Turtle's Back Mean
Themes That Are Used in "Earth on Turtle's Back" and "When Grizzlies Walked Upright"
In "The Earth on Turtle's Back", written by Onondaga, and "When Grizzlies Walked Upright",
written by Modoc, both of the stories use imagery and personification to show the theme of creation.
In Modoc's and Onondaga's stories, they both involve people with great power from the sky. Also,
they involve animals helping the woman, who get into trouble by being too curious. And that leads
to something being created. In "The Earth on Turtle's Back", the Earth was created, because the
woman couldn't live in the water. And in "When Grizzlies Walked Upright", a new species was
created, the Indians.
There is also the theme of sacrifice in "The Earth on Turtle's Back",

California Gold Rush Research Paper
The California gold rush is often chronicled as a period in American history revolving around
wealth and riches. However, the Gold Rush was a major cause for both domestic and international
conflict during the 1840's and 1850's. The awe for gold in America began in January 1848, when
James Marshall found what is known as the first nugget of gold in California at Sutter's Mill
(McGill). Although the exciting news did not get to the rest of the country immediately, many still
knew about the gold sighting. Sam Brannan, a local businessman, told people in neighboring towns
of what Marshall had seen, and people began to flock to the land surrounding Sutter's Mill (McGill)
Although this did seem joyous in the beginning, the Gold Rush changed the ... Show more content

Native Americans, who were known to have previous issues with American settlers in the West,
were greatly affected by the growing numbers of people beginning to invade their land. Once white
settlers started moving into California during the Gold Rush, Indians were treated as animals or
slaves, with many new laws depriving them of their previous rights. They were given 7.5 million
acres in exchange for the rest of California. It also became legal for Americans to capture Native
American children as laborers. ("California Indians: The Gold Rush and White Settlers."). The U.S.
government had only reserved 2,000 Indians at the time, meaning that a majority of them would
have to survive amongst the aggressive settlers without any aid from the government. On top of this,
"Casual murder of individuals, vigilante raids, and even occasional army massacres took place"
("California Indians: The Gold Rush and White Settlers."). Different groups reacted in a number of
ways, some resisting and some not. One group, The Modoc Indians, had started a war with the
Americans. Under their leader, Captain Jack, they resisted an army of roughly 3,000 for a year.
Unfortunately, Jack and three other Indians were hanged. Although other groups did fight back and
try to preserve their tribes amidst the growing number of threats in front of them, they often times
could not defend themselves against the Americans. Another group that was damaged by the Gold
Rush was the Mexicans in California. Even though they had had control of the territory prior to the
Gold Rush, Americans still mistreated and disrespected them. Mexicans had worked as gold miners
along with the Americans, but during the late 1840's and early 1850's, they had gained many
disadvantages to the white settlers. In California at the time, " laws were rapidly passed which

Literature has influenced society since its creation but history has also influenced literature since its
creation. In America, literature started with the Native Indians with their oral stories passed down
one generation at a time. The colonization of America from Europeans brought writing and new
styles of literature. But as literature evolved the purpose for it never changed. People wrote
literature in response to history to remember what they experienced and pass on how they grew
from it.
During the early American time period, native Indians would create literature to record their new

Samuel Clemens or Mark Twain was a famous realism writer. Clemens grew up in Missouri along
the Mississippi River. At the time, Missouri was a slave state and his uncle, who he spent most of
his summers with, owned many slaves. It was during this time Clemens was able to speak and gain
an understanding of what slaves went through. His feelings for slaves were made stronger when he
moved to New York for schooling, an abolitionist state ("A Life Lived in a Rapidly Changing
World"). He applied his experience into his writing, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The book
describes in detail the life and personality of a slave. He expresses his views he gained on his uncle's
farm about slaves through Huck Finn and how he "[believed Jim] cared just as much for his people
as white folks does for their'n" because of how Huck had been able to observe Jim up close just as
Clemens was able to (Twain 117). The book takes place near his childhood home on the Mississippi
river and he used his personal experiences to provide a vivid recreation of the events and scenery he
experienced. By writing about the life he lived, he is able to offer a realistic look at what he
experienced during his life. The realism era brought a more real approach to literature and had a

After reading The Earth on the Turtle's Back and When Grizzlies Walked Upright, many key details
are displayed about the Onondaga and Modoc cultures, these tribes vary in their beliefs but the
morals that are conveyed through their folklore are very similar. In the story, The Earth on the
Turtle's Back, there is a group of mythical people that live in the Skyland. After the chief's wife
dreams about the Great Tree being uprooted, the young chief pulled the tree from the soil, exposing
a large hole in the ground, his wife leans to look into the hole and falls through to a sea of water,
where the animals that inhabit it created Earth on the Turtle's back for her to live on. In When

After finding out about his daughter, the Chief Sky Spirit punishes the grizzlies by taking their
voices and making them walk on four feet. Both of the stories convey two very similar morals; the
believes that every event happens for a reason and that you should not let your curiosity get the
better of you. In The Earth on the Turtle's Back, Earth was created because the chief lost his wife,
and the chief lost his wife because he uprooted the tree, while in When Grizzlies Walked Upright,
the human race was created because the Chief Sky Spirit lost his daughter, and the Chief Sky Spirit
lost his daughter because her curiosity got the best of her. In both stories curiosity causes a character
to be lost and be responsible for the creation of something large, for example, in The Earth on the

she leaned out further to look and, as she leaned she lost balance and fell into the hole"

Haunted America By Patricia Nelson Limerick
Reading Assignment #2
The topic of this excerpt, Haunted America, by Patricia Nelson Limerick, is about how brutal the
Indian–White war was and the various patterns that she found that started this prolonged war.
Limerick conveys the chain of events that led to the Indian–White war to let the readers be more
knowledgeable about this cruel war that occurred to create the United States of America. The author
uses the story of the Modocs that corresponds to the patterns that she writes about. For example she
writes, "The Modoc's War's most distressing examples of the breakdown of white solidarity came in
a few episodes in which uninjured soldiers refused to help the wounded during retreats" (P.49). With
examples straight from the past she is able to get the readers to think deeply about all the terrible
things that happened. She also quotes books written by other authors about the Indian wars; they
made the wars sound like the Natives were all killed. One wrote, "'Native Americans were
exterminated" (P.69). In response to what this author wrote, Limerick said that they are "showing
great sympathy for Indians. They are also, of course, killing them off with a thoroughness that the
United States Army did not, thank heavens, match" (P.69). Some other authors wrote everything
about that time except the war such as, "'People coming by wagon trains, ... Show more content on

closing of Modoc School, Huntsville, and Losantville consequently make up the Union School
Corporation district. The building was finished accordingly in 1957 allowing it to open and start
enrolling. Union Has been running strong until a few years ago when one of the previous
superintendents made some very bad choices leading the school into money deficits. Since then the
community has been trying to up the student population to just keep the school running from hosting
foreign exchange students in taking a trip to China to recruit more students that way.
Everyone knows what it is like to be a student with 12 years of high school and or some college

Modoc is a story about a little boy named Bram who was born on a farm in Germany. His dad Josef
is a third generation elephant trainer. Bram's family trains the circus elephants in a very unique way.
Unlike most pet trainers who threat and intimidate their pets instead they treat the elephant and any
other animal with love and respect. Just like everyone else should treat his or her pet. Josef's love
for elephant's was unconditional and nothing could compare. He wanted a son and a daughter who

The Creation Stories And Cultural Characteristics Of The...
There are many different types of stories, some fairy tales and some are origin myths. Within each
story there are different things not seen by just reading the story and not thinking about the deeper
meaning behind it. Such as in origin myths there are cultural characteristics. Cultural characteristics
are the beliefs of a culture in which its society is based off of. These cultural characteristics can be
seen as a blend of beliefs that tie the people to the land around them. This is very evident when
looking at the creation stories of ingenious people. Each culture has different characteristics. For
example the indigenous creation stories called "The Earth on Turtle's Back", "When Grizzlies
Walked Upright", and the Navajo origin legend; all have characteristics of the Native American
culture. Such as the Native American cultural characteristics that you should respect animals, nature,
and elders. Those cultural characteristics are very evident throughout the first two stories. The third
creation story has different cultural characteristics. The story "The Earth on The Turtle's back" has
many cultural characteristics throughout the story. They are there, but they are hidden within story
throughout the text. For example in the text the chief tells his wife that her dreams have power. After
that the chief digs up the tree, and for the Onondaga, they believe that powerful dreams should come
true. Another example of cultural characteristics throughout the text is the

they have a close relation to bears. It all started with the chief of the sky spirits, the story claims that
the chief of the sky spirits was not comfortable, living up in the sky. Do to that fact the chief decided

Analysis Of ' Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee ' Essay
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is a non–fiction book written by Dee Brown on the removal and
extinction of the native peoples that called America their home. The title was created by utilizing a
line from Stephen Vincent Benét's poem "American Names". Furthermore, the book demonstrates
the deteriorating relations between the natives and whites over time through the descriptions of
atrocities imposed upon each Native American tribe by the white settlers. The number of these
atrocities greatly outnumbers the few attempts at peace made by the aforementioned settlers. Brown
opens his book by presenting attitudes of the previous European settlers towards the people of the
New World. It is apparent from these early encounters and their outcomes that white settlers
primarily desired to exterminate Native Americans and claim their land. The proceeding chapters
describe the experiences of the Western Indians by tribe, event, and leader. Beginning with the
Navajos of the Southwest, led by Manuelito, Brown describes how Manuelito, like the many later
chiefs, attempted to accept the presence of the white settler's on their native land. When terms
between the Navajos and Americans were violated however, the Navajos retaliated, resulting in a
war in 1861 that caused acts of cruelty on both sides. Next, Brown looked to the Santee Sioux led
by chief Little Crow. While attempting to adopt the white man's lifestyle, Little crow became
aggravated and soon acted on this aggravation, which

It was a war between the Native American and the white settlers. The war took place near Klamath

Iroquoans In American Literature
Native Americans played an important role in American Literature. American writing's foundation is
due to the oral traditions of the Native Americans. Stories were told to youth about cultural beliefs
through various tribes. In the story "the Earth on a Turtle's Back", the Onondaga show great respect
for the natural world. "Form the Navajo Origin Legend" shows how the Navajo worshipped the
supernatural. In "The Iroquois Constitution", demonstrates how the Iroquois practiced customs. This
paper will explore how the Native American oral traditions are expressed by natural landmarks and
its significance, spiritual beliefs, and examples of ceremonial rites.
Native Americans have a deep respect for nature. The Onondaga tribe learned ways to work together
by observing the animals. In the story "The earth on a Turtle's Back", the animals sacrificed their
lives in effort to save the Ancient Chief of the Skyland's wife. To do so, they retrieved soil by
swimming deep down in the water. When the soil was finally retrieved, the animals placed the tiny
bit of soil on the turtle's back, where the earth could grow for the woman to live on. In "When the
Grizzlies Walked Upright", The Modoc revealed Mt. Shesta, the first volcano, it replicated their
home. By having a place to live, nature is providing shelter and safety. The Iroquois "From the
Iroquois constitution", planted a tree called the Tree of the Great Long Leaves. Where the five
nations would gather. The roots stretched to the

How Is Croy Treated Unfairly

  • 1. How Is Croy Treated Unfairly Tony Serra believed Croy was treated unfairly because of his Native American culture. He believed that the unfair treatment could have been traced back to how Natives were treated in the past. His defense is explained in, "So the heart of Serra's case was what he called a 'cultural defense', a parade of Indian scholars, activists and residents of Siskyou County who testified that pioneer brutality did not die out in Northern California with the last Indian campaign, the bloody Modoc war of the 1870's (which ended with the tribe's near–obliteration and the execution of its leaders, whose heads were then shipped to the Smithsonian for 'scientific investigation')" (Tabolt 32). Serra chose to defend Croy in a way that highlighted the real reasons ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Loss of a Predator: the Gray Wolf Vs. California Essay... California's last solitary wolf was reportedly killed in 1924 in Lassen County. Once a widely distributed species throughout the Pacific Northwest, the settlement of European Americans brought the eradication of the Gray wolf from California. Bounties on wolves had been established in Europe dating back to ancient Greece, so consequently European settlers came to America with this plan in mind. An early Plymouth Colony established a fine from "whoever shall shoot off a gun on an unnecessary occasion, or at any game except at an Indian or a wolf" (Hampton 63). Settlers believed that wolves were the embodiment of evil – endangering human life and well being, killing livestock, and depleting game animals. The government placed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Large carcasses provided food for many animals from eagles and bears to beetles and microscopic organisms that break meat down, eventually creating fertilizer for plants. The absence of wolves has allowed for smaller predators to increase in population and range, such as coyotes and raccoons. These species in turn cause greater exploitation of their specific food sources. Coyotes have now assumed the position of top predator in California, making populations of foxes dwindle as they compete for the similar food sources. The chain of events is continuous once a high order predator is eliminated. Reintroducing wolves into California may help restore the balance and diversity of plants and animals in our ecosystem. However, the return of wolves would not be without problems. California is very different now from the environment it once was when wolves lived here. They would have to contend with the growing human population, development, and livestock industries. Politics and public opinion might also be against them. Even though the wolf does not play a big part in California's mainstream society today, it was once an important animal to many Native American groups. The fact that the natives had words for wolf shows how widespread California wolves were historically. Almost all of the 80 different languages spoken in California at the time of European arrival had different words for wolf, coyote, fox, and dog. The Wiyot in Humboldt Bay had ... • 3. Essay On Native American Tribal Music Music is one of the most influential parts of cultures all over the world, but to the Native Americans it is pivotal. Native American tribal music is a very important part of most Native Americans' history, culture, and societies. Music is an extremely important role of Native American culture and history. Generally, it was one of the only methods that they had as a way to pass down traditions and their history from generation to generation. There wasn't very much documentation of their history until validation from English settlers, other than some archeological evidence of musical instruments and depictions of music that have been dated as far back as the 7th Century. There were typically two types of songs that the tribes would pass down, and they would be either public songs or private songs. Public songs were often historical, and could be retold into many different versions which often gave the songs different meanings. But the private songs were unchanged through the history and kept those tribes' history/culture intact forever. There were primarily six different areas of music in the United States where different tribes resided. The main characteristics of all of these diverse areas were that they were based on singing and percussion. The vocalization of these tribes range from solos, chorales, unison, and multipart singing. Percussion was also very common, and the use of drums and rattles were used to keep a steady beat for singers. Flutes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In their societies, music is used for worship, work, entertainment, expressing grief, or gaining strength. Many of their ceremonies and stories verbally allowed for ancient customs to be passed down to later generations. • 4. Captain Jack Persuasive Speech Greetings Captain Jack and my fellow Modocs, today I would like to speak to you on behalf of the government's proposal. As you probably know, the government has given us the choice to voluntarily move to the reservation or go to war over our land. If we choose to fight, we will most likely be slaughtered. Even if we somehow manage to survive, trading with white settlers will come to a halt, and they will most likely attack us again. On the other hand, if we choose to move to the reservation, we will face our old age rivals, the Klamaths, who with no doubt, will attempt to attack us. Some of our men's lives will most likely be taken with these attacks. With our movement would also be a loss of land. Land that our ancestors have lived on for hundreds of years, but this isn't about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They received financial compensation for their land, an option which was not presented to us, and now live successfully in Indian Territory. They have built schools, banks, and created businesses, showing that working with the settlers can be auspicious. The Nez Perce, on the other hand, tried to seek Sitting Bull's advice when they were told they would be relocated to Wallowa Valley. On their journey they were overcome by U.S. forces, who sent them to a malaria infected camp in Kansas. Nearly ⅓ of the tribe died there and the rest were sent to Wallowa Valley, where they would have ended up if they chose not to fight, with only a fraction of a once–strong tribe. FInally the Cherokee, a once strong nation now in ruins. The U.S. proposed a treaty to them, which was not signed by their Chief or the majority, but was still ratified by the U.S. senate. This "treaty" gave them the power to legally relocate the Cherokee people. By the end of their pitiful journey to the reserve, 4,000 of their people lay dead. • 5. Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee Summary Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee describes the challenges and trials the Native Americans faced against the United States government. Brown describes the brutal murders between the United States government and the Native Americans. The attempts at peace were overpowered by the lies and betrayal. The United States government wanted to place the Native Americans in a desolate location of their choosing. These locations were called "reservations." The Indians were not happy about being exiled to a certain location. The Indians wanted freedom to roam the land as they please. The Delshay of the Tonto Apaches made a grave statement about having freedom of the land, "God made the white man and God made the Apache, and the Apache has just as much right to the country as the white man. I want to make a treaty that will last, so that both can travel over the country and have no trouble." (213) Just like the Tonto Apaches, Cochise wanted peace with the US ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This group was a friendly, sturdy tribe. Just like the other Indian tribes, the Poncas wanted peace with the whites. When the government officials were setting up boundaries for the different tribes, the Poncas generously gave the government a portion of their land in exchange for protection of their persons, property, and permanent home. After ten years the treaty makers began making a treaty with the Sioux. The treaty was a territory reassignment in which the Poncas land was included. The Poncas relentlessly protested to Washington. Despite their treaty with the government, the Sioux began attacking the Poncas land and threatening the Poncas. After seven years of the Poncas being forced to work in gardens and cornfields, the government finally acknowledged their treaty with the Poncas. The governemtn was expected to restore the land to the Poncas, but instead the Poncas were given a small amount of money to make up for their losses. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Comparing Earth On The Turtle's Back And When Grizzlies... The origin myths The Earth on the Turtle's Back and When Grizzlies Walked Upright have story details that are similar, yet also very different. The Onondaga and Modoc cultures both respect the Sky Spirit, and believe that the Sky Spirit controlled everything on Earth. A recurring moral in both myths is that everything happens for a reason. In The Earth on the Turtle's Back, if the Ancient Chief's wife had never had a dream about the tree being uprooted, Earth would have never been discovered. In When Grizzlies Walked Upright, if the daughter never poked her head out over the top of the mountain, grizzly bears would be able to talk and walk on two legs. • 7. Graduation Speech Essay WOW! So much has happened since June. The SV FFA and ag department had a rough start to our year losing three of our students who were on the FFA officer team to other schools. Even with this bump in the road, the four officers that remained visited Mt. Shasta City and had a blast bonding and learning more about each other at their officer retreat in August. Once school started we found three new officers and attended COLC (Chapter Officer Leadership Conference) where the entire team learned about their diverse leadership styles and were able to bond together as the official Surprise Valley FFA Chapter Officer Team for the 2017–2018 school year. They have also learned basic CNC design skills that will be strengthened during their time at SVHS. They were put into groups and created CNC designs that were then cut–out and put into the silent auction at the Pig, Swig and Jig. Ag Earth science is beginning their unit on soil and from there, will learn about Earth's atmosphere. Ag leadership has been working their way through different "habitudes." These are leadership practices that everyone should practice and apply in their daily lives. Ag Bio has been trucking through the new sustainable agriculture biology curriculum. They have studied sustainability and how it can be applied in agriculture and tested using the scientific method. We will soon be diving into photosynthesis and composting. As October winds down, Miss M reflects on the activities of the month. What is most exciting is that ALL of the freshman attended the Greenhand Leadership Conference! • 8. The Last Report On The Miracles By Louise Erdrich Summary Louise Erdrich Louise Erdrich was born on June 7, 1954 in Little Falls, Minnesota. She grew up in Wahpeton North Dakota near Turtle Mountain reservation, where her grandfather Pat Tourneau was a Tribal chairman. Erdrich uses characters not only to demonstrate the experiences of Native Americans, but also the heartache and pain she has gone through in her life. Erdrich's family was far from normal, they faced many obstacles, but unfortunately they were not able to overcome them. "In 1981 she married Michael Dorris, a professor of anthropology and head of the Native American studies program at Dartmouth" (Andrews, McCarthy). "Hauled halfway across Minnesota from Little Rock brickwoods pious drivers, they still held the peculiar sulfurous moth gold of the clay outside the town" (Erdrich). "Then six grasshopper years occurred during which even the handles on the hoes and rakes were eaten and a U.S. cavalry soldier, too , partially devoured while he lay drunk in the insects' path" (Erdrich). Erdrich uses a character in her book that seems to be in pain due to her circumstances. "It was as though her soul were neatly removed by a drinking straw and siphoned into the green pool of quiet that lay beneath the rippling cascade of notes" (Erdrich). This character also seems resolute to use music as a way to cope with her emotions, just as Louise uses writing as a way to share her stories and escape the reality of life sometimes. "At the piano keyboard, absorbed into the notes that rose beneath her hands, she existed in her essence" (Erdrich). The character felt as though she meant something while playing the piano. • 11. Analysis Of The Earth On Turtle's Back: A Creation Myth "The Earth on Turtle's Back" is a creation myth retold by Micheal Caduto and Joseph Bruchac. The myth suggests that a muskrat 'created' the Earth by pulling it up out of the depths of the waters. Similarly, "When the Grizzlies Walked Upright" is also a creation myth retold by Richard Erodes and Alfonso Ortiz. This myth explains that the first Indians were created from a union between the grizzly bear and Sky Spirit. Although the myths reveal that the Onondaga and the Modoc both believe that there is a higher power, each tribe has different views on how their Sky Chief is. Both the Onondaga and the Modoc believe that there is a higher power, otherwise known as the Sky Chief. For example, in "The Earth on Turtle's Back", as we are learning about the Skyland and how things looked the narrator states, "There was an ancient Chief in Skyland." As page 22 states, "I am sad that you had this dream. It is clearly a dream of great power... we must do all we can to make it true." This quote shows how the Sky Chief of the Onondaga is caring and selfless. He wants to make sure his wife's dream comes true no matter what the cost. In contrast, the Modoc believe that their Sky Chief is unforgiving and selfish. As page 24 states, "A new race had been created that was not of his making... frowned on the old grandmother...he cursed all the grizzlies...You have wronged me, and from this moment all of you will walk on four feet and never talk again." This shows how the Sky Chief got so angry that a new race was created that was not his own, which showed that he was selfish because he wanted everything to be created by him. • 13. Haunted America by Patricia Nelson Why acknowledge history? The solution is because we essentially must to achieve access to the laboratory of human involvement. In the essay "Haunted America", Patricia Nelson takes a truly various and remarkably gallant stance on United States history. Through the recounting of the White/Modoc war in "Haunted America," she brings to light the complexity and confusion of the White/Indian conflicts that is often missing in much of the history we read. Her account of the war, with the faults of both Whites and Indians revealed, is an unusual alternative to the stereotypical "Whites were good; Indians were bad" or the reverse stand point that "Indians were good; Whites were bad" conclusions that many historians reach. Limerick argues that a very brutal and bloody era has been simplified and romanticized, reducing the lives and deaths of hundreds to the telling of an uncomplicated story of "Good Guys" and "Bad Guys". Additionally, Limerick lays forth a challenge to the "cheerful remarks about how the understanding of history will help us to understand ourselves and to cope with the dilemmas we have inherited from the past" (412); this challenge is to find out what. By remembering these stories in their full intensity and completeness, what do we gain besides a revival and restoration of the misery? The following paragraphs will clarify what is missing in much of our history and why it is a problem; they will also address the challenge put forth of what we can possibly learn ... Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee Summary Kelsey Hernandez Dr. Matthew Bailey HIS 106 Section 16 02/16/2015 WASP Stings Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is written by Dee Brown and depicts the life of many American Indians in the late 1800s. There is very little recognition of the real impact of Native Americans hardships that happened because of government policies being implemented upon them and the feeling of WASP (White Anglo–Saxton Protestant) superiority. The two different ways of life were causing many battles, massacres, and injuries from people on both sides of the fight for land. (310) They are able to now feel like even if they win a battle and get enough people to join their army the will never be truly allowed to win the land. The Nez Percés people are then told to give up their land and settle in a reservation after loosing battles to the Bluecoats. (312) The surrounding policy changes in the times are part of the reason as to why this major civil war was being overshadowed in 1877. (315) The white settlers are able to act with very little notice being given due to the amount of "larger" conflicts that were developing in the start of the nation. The Poncas are the next tribe that is played out, and they are considered to be peaceful. However, they are sent to Indian territories with groups that are considered hostile and that result in the demise and deaths. • 17. Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee Essay The book Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee was written by Dee Brown. Dee Brown wrote a handful of books and the central theme around those books were tales of Native Americans and civil war stories. He spent a long time studying different tribes all around the United States. He has brought out the voice of the Native Americans which was muffled and silenced by the army and government. This book brought much awareness to a cause many had forgotten about, and to the shock of many when they realized he was not a Native American. Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee tells the stories of many Native American tribes and their hardships when facing the government, army, and settlers. While reading this book, I came to quite a shock. I learned the point of view that was hidden in history books, the loss instead of the win, and the sadness felt throughout the book that made it unpleasant to read. I believe this book has brought to light the mistreatment of Native Americans in the past, the main hardships including countless false treaties, harsh treatments from the settlers, and the unjust massacres. I found this book to be quite a difficult read but incredibly worth it. It is written in such a manner that you feel immersed, you feel the all the emotions and imagine how everything came to be. It is figurative, but also incredibly factual. After graduating from Georgetown University, and earning a Master's Degree at Yale, Dorris began to create these characters and ideas that he had longed for himself during childhood. He married his literary partner, Louise Erdrich, who was also of Native American descent. They had three children together, plus the three that Dorris had adopted, all of which were born on Native American reservations. All three of his adopted children suffered from fetal alcohol syndrome. During a twenty year period before Dorris' death, he published fourteen books and over one hundred articles. In 1987 he published his first novel "A Yellow Raft in Blue Water." "A Yellow Raft in Blue Water" is divided into three sections narrated by three different Native American women: Rayona, Christine and Ida. All three of these women are all related. Rayona is the daughter of Christine, and Christine believes she is the daughter of Ida, but Ida is actually her half–sister and cousin. All three sections were a part of a larger story; they all helped support or complete each other. The structure of this novel forces us as readers to be more active. The American Dream By James Madison Parth Patel Honors English III 2nd Hour 4/27/16 James Madison stated "That part of America which had encouraged them most had advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the art." This means that if our American goal is to do something, we will not only do that task, we will be the best in the world at it. Also we went out west because we were encouraged to go west, not that we had to.This represents the path we took to settle the west. We went out west first to get the gold and then we would build railroad and then cities would emerge. The American dream is always changing for different people in different times. The American dream during this time period was to get control of all the land out west and unite it. We would be settling the west for many years but it shows our American Dream in settling the west was to make the west advanced as the east. People who moved and settled western lands were motivated to do so for the many reasons. Many people believed that you go west to get a new and better life. The west was filled with opportunities like the abundance of land. This land was sold cheap to farmers who would take care for it and a positive was that no one farmed and used up all the nutrients in the soil. There was also opportunities to hunt for buffalo and make money by selling the hide and meat. With the demand on meat in the growing eastern cities, people also moved west to raise cattle. The awe for gold in America began in January 1848, when James Marshall found what is known as the first nugget of gold in California at Sutter's Mill (McGill). Although the exciting news did not get to the rest of the country immediately, many still knew about the gold sighting. Native Americans, who were known to have previous issues with American settlers in the West, were greatly affected by the growing numbers of people beginning to invade their land. Once white settlers started moving into California during the Gold Rush, Indians were treated as animals or slaves, with many new laws depriving them of their previous rights. They were given 7.5 million acres in exchange for the rest of California. It also became legal for Americans to capture Native American children as laborers. ("California Indians: The Gold Rush and White Settlers."). The U.S. government had only reserved 2,000 Indians at the time, meaning that a majority of them would have to survive amongst the aggressive settlers without any aid from the government. On top of this, "Casual murder of individuals, vigilante raids, and even occasional army massacres took place" ("California Indians: The Gold Rush and White Settlers."). Different groups reacted in a number of ways, some resisting and some not. One group, The Modoc Indians, had started a war with the Americans. Under their leader, Captain Jack, they resisted an army of roughly 3,000 for a year. Unfortunately, Jack and three other Indians were hanged. Although other groups did fight back and try to preserve their tribes amidst the growing number of threats in front of them, they often times could not defend themselves against the Americans. Another group that was damaged by the Gold Rush was the Mexicans in California. Even though they had had control of the territory prior to the Gold Rush, Americans still mistreated and disrespected them. • 28. Haunted America By Patricia Nelson Limerick Reading Assignment #2 The topic of this excerpt, Haunted America, by Patricia Nelson Limerick, is about how brutal the Indian–White war was and the various patterns that she found that started this prolonged war. Limerick conveys the chain of events that led to the Indian–White war to let the readers be more knowledgeable about this cruel war that occurred to create the United States of America. The author uses the story of the Modocs that corresponds to the patterns that she writes about. For example she writes, "The Modoc's War's most distressing examples of the breakdown of white solidarity came in a few episodes in which uninjured soldiers refused to help the wounded during retreats" (P.49). With examples straight from the past she is able to get the readers to think deeply about all the terrible things that happened. She also quotes books written by other authors about the Indian wars; they made the wars sound like the Natives were all killed. One wrote, "'Native Americans were exterminated" (P.69). In response to what this author wrote, Limerick said that they are "showing great sympathy for Indians. They are also, of course, killing them off with a thoroughness that the United States Army did not, thank heavens, match" (P.69). • 34. Analysis Of ' Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee ' Essay Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is a non–fiction book written by Dee Brown on the removal and extinction of the native peoples that called America their home. The title was created by utilizing a line from Stephen Vincent Benét's poem "American Names". Furthermore, the book demonstrates the deteriorating relations between the natives and whites over time through the descriptions of atrocities imposed upon each Native American tribe by the white settlers. The number of these atrocities greatly outnumbers the few attempts at peace made by the aforementioned settlers. Brown opens his book by presenting attitudes of the previous European settlers towards the people of the New World. It is apparent from these early encounters and their outcomes that white settlers primarily desired to exterminate Native Americans and claim their land. The proceeding chapters describe the experiences of the Western Indians by tribe, event, and leader. Beginning with the Navajos of the Southwest, led by Manuelito, Brown describes how Manuelito, like the many later chiefs, attempted to accept the presence of the white settler's on their native land. When terms between the Navajos and Americans were violated however, the Navajos retaliated, resulting in a war in 1861 that caused acts of cruelty on both sides. Next, Brown looked to the Santee Sioux led by chief Little Crow. While attempting to adopt the white man's lifestyle, Little crow became aggravated and soon acted on this aggravation, which ... To do so, they retrieved soil by swimming deep down in the water. When the soil was finally retrieved, the animals placed the tiny bit of soil on the turtle's back, where the earth could grow for the woman to live on.
