In 1911 General Electric absorbed the National Electric Lamp Association
(NELA) into its lighting business. GE established its lighting division headquarters at Nela Park in
East Cleveland, Ohio. Nela Park is still the headquarters for GE's lighting business.

The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) was founded by GE in 1919 to further international radio.
GE used RCA as its retail arm for radio sales from
1919, when GE began production, until separation in 1930.[13] RCA would quickly grow into an
industrial giant of its own.
2.4 Power generation
GE's long history of working with turbines in the power–generation field gave them the engineering
know–how to move into the new field of aircraft turbosuperchargers. Led by Sanford Alexander
Moss, GE introduced the first superchargers during World War I, and continued to develop them
during the Interwar period. Superchargers became indispensable in the years immediately prior to
World War II, and GE was the world leader in exhaust–driven supercharging when the war started.
This experience, in turn, made GE a natural selection to develop the Whittle W.1 jet engine that was
demonstrated in the

in the world. GE is also one of the top five oldest industries in the United States, at a 130 years. This
great American company has been stayed in business because of the many great leaders who have
led the success for GE. Leader 's such as, Jack Welch and Jeff Immelt, have brought many changes
at GE bringing the company into the 20th century. Jack Welch and Jeff Immelt have been very
successful at changing GE and making it a more highly profitable company, due to their leadership

The Jack Welch Era at General Electric
In the case, "The Jack Welch Era at General Electric", indicate that during the period of Jack Welch
was a CEO at General Electric from 1981 to 2001, the company became remarkable profit. Earnings
per share rose from $.46 in 1981 to $1.07 in 2001. GE is a company which has a very long history,
and Jack Welch was the first working–class person that finally became the famous manager in GE
history. He changed and built lots of rules to fulfill his ambition to make the company more wealthy
such as eliminated workers, changed GE's culture by promoting the notion of a "boundary less"
organization, used identical 20–70–20 percent curve to manage managers, and reshaped GE stocks.

Such curve is really helpful in the beginning. Before Welch control the GE, there existed two
bureaucracy problems. One was too many vice presidents and too many staffs with authority to
review and approve decisions. Other was that headquarters staff practiced a "superficial
congeniality". After starting the 20–70–10 curve, on the one hand it helped to cut the inefficiency
manage layer staffs off, and also increase the enthusiasm of the staffs. Besides, his generously
rewarded managers who achieved performance goals that turned everyone in GE work harder and
with high energy level. On the other hand, this method succeeds in stopping the generation of
bureaucracy. Employees in GE can confront their bosses to express frustration with bureaucratic
practices and suggest more efficient alternatives freely. Thousands of such sessions were held to
drive out the bureaucratic mentality. However, some found this system is heartless, because no one
wants to be the bottom 10%. It also caused the high unemployment and no diversity at the top.
Welch disagreed with those who found the system heartless; he called it's a "false kindness" to feel
heartless. Thus, during his tenure, profits with the mental stress of staffs growth together. Since the
process was repeated annually, and each times the bottom 10 percent had to go, unemployment rate

Some of their big competitors are Hitachi Ltd., Siemens AG, and Honeywell International. Also,
some of their other big competitors are Mitsubishi Corporation, Textron Inc., United Technologies
Corporation, and 3M. The company is all about Research and Development when it comes to target
market and product mix. A general motor innovates on a large scale. More than half the planes in the
world have GE engines. Jet engines are a technical and manufacturing masterpiece. They have
invested more than $10 million in R&D over the past decade to serve the military and
commercial aviation customers. The new engines are substantially more fuel–efficient than the ones
that they are replacing. They track thousands of engine performance parameters while they are in
service, and they use that information to improve performance standards. Their ability to execute

General Electric General Electric (GE abbreviated) was started with Thomas Edison's invention of
the light bulb. Both Thomas Edison and JP Morgan started the Edison Lamp Company, which later
became known as General Electric. The people at GE are committed to making a world that works
better. General Electric does not have a standard mission statement, but they explain their objectives
by the simple equation seen below. General Electric, as seen in the equation above, looks at what the
world needs, finds a better way to produce that need and does all of this with a relentless drive to
invent and build things that matter. And this equation equals a world that will work better. GE takes

energy, and this is being done for the services of the energy industry. Another project being worked
on is the Gevo 12–cylinder diesel engine products the same 4,400 horsepower as its 16– cylinder

locomotive.

As a result of massive changes in operations of GE, the personnel have experienced a substantial

This case study follows General Electric, and the transformation that company made over two
decades of business. General Electric was founded in 1878 by Thomas Edison, and according to the
case study, "[GE] grew from its early focus on the generation, distribution, and use of electric power
to become, a hundred years later, one of the world's leading diversified industrial companies"
(Wozny, 2005, p.1). General Electric grew its name in business through their work in power

In 1892 it merged with Thomson–Houston Electric Company to create General Electric as we know

General Electric's next strength as a company is the amount of cash and liquid funds it currently has.
According to the YCharts site, "General Electric currently has 137 billion in liquid funds" (YCharts,
2014). This is one of GE's strengths as they are able to recruit and buy other companies with that
money which also would be an opportunity for them. The cash on hand helps them out if there is
another recession as General Electric would have that money to help counter any loss of profits and
be able to inject that money into the company.
One weaknesses of General Electric is the size of the company. It is a challenging task to manage a
conglomerate. General Electric's main business units are GE Aviation, GE Capital, GE Corporate,
GE Energy Management, GE Appliances and Lighting, GE Healthcare, GE Power & Water, GE Oil
& Gas, and Transportation. As you can see that is a wide variety of businesses. They all have their
individual strengths and weaknesses also, but Jeff Immelt the CEO has to manage it as one giant
company as General Electric.
An action that General Electric can do to lower the risk of this weaknesses is getting rid of a
business sections that hurt the company overall. These business units could still be very profitable,
but if it hurts the overall vision of the company then action has to be taken. They can do this by

General Electric (GE) is a huge multinational corporation. The company started out as the Edison
Electric Light Company in 1878. In 1892 the company was incorporated as General Electric thru a
merger with the Thomson–Houston Electric Company. The company's products and services include
such items as aircraft engines, oil and gas production equipment, medical imaging, financing
,appliances, and industrial products . GE's diversified businesses reduce its financial risk. GE
currently company operates 206 manufacturing facilities in the US and Puerto Rico, and over 295
manufacturing plants located in 39 other countries around the world. GE offers products and
services across the United States, Mexico, Europe, Asia, Middle East and many other countries.
GE's headquarters are located in Fairfield, Connecticut. In 2015, the company announced the GE
Capital Exit Plan, where they plan to reduce the size of their financial service business. They will be
selling off secondary business interests and some investments but still retaining particular assets to
fuel their growth for years to come.

Edison Electric Light Company. Edison created his first publically available electric lamp, and
changed the industry forever. By 1890, another company, the Thomson–Houston Company, had
started, and created competition with Edison's company. Being the only two large companies

support the company from the inside out. Currently, GE has it's headquarters in Fairfield,
Connecticut. Jeff Immelt is the current CEO, and has held that position since 2001. Immelt has been
involved in the company much longer than that, though. He's held positions in GE's Plastics,
Appliances,and Healthcare divisions since 1982. However, his power has a negative side to go along

Executive Summary
This paper would take leadership into account by comparing and contrasting two well–known
leaders in General Electric (GE). The paper first introduces two leaders with some brief biographies,
characteristics and their contribution to the GE. It then looks at who would be the more effective
leader by providing with some aspects of leadership. It then comes up with some skills these people
employed in their leadership to help GE growth rapidly during 1990s till now. The next part will put
a conclusion and some recommendations about leadership for potential leaders in the future.

Welch was a very good hunter for opportunities and also a good manager of risks and threats while
Immelt improved what Welch had. As a successful story in business management, application of Six
Sigma program in GE was spread over the world as one of the most valuable lessons among
businesses in the world relating to quality control. (see Appendix B, Story 1)
Above all, Welch was a ruthless taskmaster at GE. Immelt works with long term perspective rather
with a short term one. Immelt proved that he is a very effective leader by helping GE overcome the
hardship in 2001 when terrorist attacks on September 11 were a harbinger of bad times to come for
GE. (see Appendix B, Story 2)
It's really difficult to say this leader is better than another one. To compare and contrast them, in the
range of this paper, in terms of leadership, we would just use leadership styles, traits of emotional
intelligence that helped them become top leaders in the world.
2.1. Leadership styles
In the reign of Jack Welch during his 20–year at GE, a new leadership style was introduced and
spread companywide. Welch developed a ranking system that put employees in one of the three
categories. The top 20 percent were "stars", the middle 70 percent were the crucial majority and the
