HISTORY
A BRIEF
Indian architecture is as old as the history of the
civilization. The earliest remains of recognizable building
activity in the India dates back to the Indus Valley cities.
Among India's ancient architectural remains, the most
characteristic are the temples, Chaityas, Viharas, Stupas
and other religious structures.

ANCIENT RUINS
ORIGINS AND VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE
With the Indus Valley civilization and several subsequent empires and
kingdoms, India is one of the World’s archaeological gems. Be it ancient
forts or some of the world’s oldest universities, India has more than a
thousand archaeological sites – many of which are accessible to travellers
and tourists. Since ancient times the region has seen several cultures
flourish due to the endless conquest of the region between various
empires and kingdoms. These cultures have all brought different
technological and architectural advances to the region.

ARCHITECTURE
THE ISLAMIC INFLUENCE
The development of Muslim Style of Architecture of this
period can be called the Indo-Islamic Architecture or the
Indian Architecture influenced by Islamic Art. The Indo-
Islamic style was neither strictly Islamic nor strictly
Hindu. The architecture of the medieval period can be
divided into two main categories. They are the Delhi or
the Imperial Style and the Mughal Architecture. The
Imperial Style developed under the patronage of the
Sultans of Delhi. The Mughal Architecture was a blend of
the Islamic Architecture of Central Asia and the Hindu
Architecture of India.

ARCHITECTURE
THE INDIAN TEMPLE
A number of architectural texts known as the
Shilpashastras were written in early medieval times.
These refer to three major styles of temple
architecture, Nagara, Dravida, and Vesara.
1.The
Nagara style is associated with the land between the
Himalayas and Vindhyas.
2. Dravida style with the land between the Krishna
and Kaveri rivers,
3. Vesara style is sometimes associated with the
area between the Vindhyas and the Krishna river.

THE HISTORIC
DURABILITY
A building should stand up
robustly and remain in good
condition.
BEAUTY
It should be aesthetically
pleasing.
UTILITY
It should be suitable for the
purposes for which it is used.
Of course I believe imaginative
architecture can make a difference
to people's lives, but I wish it was
possible to divert some of the effort
we put into ambitious museums and
galleries into the basic architectural
building blocks of society.

ORIGINS AND VERNACULAR
The mother art is architecture. Without an
architecture of our own we have no soul of our
own civilization.

MODERNISM
ORIGINS AND VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE
Seventeen years after the construction of St Martin's Garrison Church,
India became independent from the British Empire in 1947, and Indian
architecture immediately parted from European classical styles and
rushed into modernism. The leading light who determined its direction
was the French architect Le Corbusier (1887-1965), who planned the new
capital city of Punjab state, Chandigarh, and designed its capital complex
and principal facilities.
