A Happy New Year!
*** New Year’s Greetings ***
Bishop Gensho Hara
A Happy New Year! I pray for a fruitful year for all of you guided by the wisdom and compas-
sion of Amida Buddha. As you know, this year 2011 marks the 800th Grand Memorial of our Jodo
Shu founder, Honen Shonin, who taught us the way of O-Nembutsu—calling Amida Buddha’s Holy
Name. Jodo Shu temples in Japan and around the world will hold special commemorative services,
observances, and projects in honor of our founder.
Here, in Hawaii, each temple will hold a Memorial Service for Honen Shonin (Gyoki-e) in Janu-
ary. We will also hold a Kyoku-sponsored Hawaii State Grand Memorial Service at the Honolulu
Betsuin on Sunday, September 18. Other planned commemorative projects include a Japan tour with
attendance to the Grand Memorial observance at the Grand Head Temple Chionin in April and a re-
vised publication of the Otsutome book.
We hope to observe these and the other functions throughout the year with the utmost gratitude
and appreciation for our master Honen Shonin and his teachings. We also congratulate Koloa Jodo
Mission for their centennial celebration on February 19.

2. New Year’s Greetings
Cont’dGreetings from Bishop Hara:
On this most auspicious New Year, let us recall Honen Shonin’s parting message, Ichimai
Kishomon (One-sheet Document): “devote yourself simply to the recitation of Nembutsu.” With
this in mind and in our hearts, I wish you a most happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year! Namu
Amida Butsu.
With Gassho,
Bishop Gensho Hara
Message from Kyodan Board President
In 100 years, I wonder what life will be like, and what challenges will face the President and
congregation of Jodo Mission of Hawaii in the year 2111? Maybe, they will wonder what our life
was like and what were our biggest challenges and concerns in the year 2011. I have a funny feel-
ing that the challenges they will face in 2111, will be similar to our present day concerns in 2011,
which was probably similar to the concerns in the year 1911. And those concerns are the continua-
tion, sustainability, and prosperity of Jodo Shu in Hawaii. These are concepts that are never com-
plete, just in a state of change. I would share with future generations that the “way” is in a process
- a process (1) to redefine a greater relevancy for Jodo Shu while maintaining it’s mission, (2) to
find people who have a passion to implement this new mission, and (3) lastly to have the courage
and vision to be open - to new opportunities, new people, and a new way.
On Sunday, January 23, at 10:00 a.m., please join us for the 800th Memorial Service for Ho-
nen Shonin, founder of Jodo Shu (Gyoki-e). We will also have a General Membership Meeting
and installation of our new Kyodan Board followed by a New Year’s Party and fellowship.
Thank you again for your continued support. Best wishes for a prosperous and healthy 2011.

4. Bits of Knowledge about Buddhism
Vol.02 “Who Is the Master of St. Honen?”
St. Honen (1133-1212), the founder of Jodo Shu, was the teacher of St. Shinran (1173-1262),
the founder of Hongwanji. Then, who was the teacher of St. Honen? He was taught by high priests
on Mt. Hiei, but the teacher on whom he relied the most was St. Shan-tao (613-681), the Chinese
Pure Land Buddhism master. After St. Honen thoroughly studied the Sutras and the priests’ com-
ments, he finally came across a passage in “Commentary on the Meditation Sutra” written by St.
Shan-tao. In that commentary, St. Shan-tao mentioned that he had found the ultimate path to the
Pure Land supported by the Original Vow of Amida Buddha, which is to recite the Nembutsu. That
was the very moment St. Honen decided to start Jodo Shu in the spring of 1175.
It is true that St. Shan-tao didn’t teach St. Honen in person, but
St. Honen did have a clear dream about his true master. In his
dream, the lower half of St. Shan-tao’s figure was shining golden.
Because gold is the symbol of Amida Buddha, St. Honen firmly be-
lieved that St. Shan-tao was a manifestation of Amida Buddha.
In the main altar of Jodo Mission, we have the statues of St.
Honen on the left of Amida Buddha, St. Shan-tao on the right. The
statue of St. Shan-tao is golden from the waist down according to
Honen’s dream.

Hon Nen Mo Yoroshiku Onegai Moshi Agemasu!
Please accept our best wishes for the New Year and we gratefully appreciate your support and
cooperation during the past years. As we begin the New Year of 2011, we humbly ask for your kokua
and continuous support and cooperation to sustain the temple in the face of inflating operational
costs.
Your membership dues allow Jodo Mission to exist and remain a positive influence in the com-
munity. Our Board of Directors works totally on a volunteer basis. Our ministers are working hard to
provide spiritual leadership through services, personal counseling, and other activities including deliv-
ering sermons, conducting weddings and memorial services, various blessings (baby, home, car,
boat, office, get well, birthday), visiting care homes and hospitals, and giving religious instructions.
They are on call 24 hours a day. Your dues pay for our mailings, the costs of our functions, build-
ing maintenance and operations. By maintaining a strong membership, Jodo Mission is able to con-
tinue to provide peace of mind to our members and respond to the needs of the community.
We are continually active in propagating the Pure Land Buddhism and public services in the
community. The Board of Directors wishes to hear your questions and concerns and urges you to
join or renew your membership so that we may remain a viable and positive force in the community.

letter, would you kindly send your membership dues made payable to Jodo Mission of Hawaii, and
